NATHAN MILES WITH OTTO AND LUCY

    By Goya Dmytryshchak

Two dumped kittens whose ears had to be surgically removed to save their lives are in need of a forever home together.

e pair of white kittens, named Otto and Lucy, were among a litter of four dumped in the Brooklyn industrial precinct.

Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue (WSCKR) last week responded to a call from a factory worker who found the kittens when he arrived at work.

them, they basically le these kittens out in the sun white cats are very prone to sun damage, Mr Miles said.

e shocking thing is, I mean theyre only kittens but yet they must have been le in the sun pretty much continuously because their ears have had to come o.

e ears looked terrible. ey were all bald and full of scabs according to the vet, there was cellular damage to the ear cells, which is the beginning signs of cancer so the decision was that they had to be removed for the

WSCKR founder and Melton resident Nathan Miles said the kittens, aged between 12 and 16 weeks, were very aectionate and obviously domesticated.

When rescuers collected them, thetwo white ones were in urgent need ofmedical attention on their bloodied and infected ears.

Vets at the Lost Dogs Home determined both cats would need their ears removed to save their lives.

Whoever owned them before they dumped

long-term welfare of the cat. Mr Miles said good homes were sought for all four kittens, but he wanted Otto and Lucy to be adopted as a pair.

Because of everything theyve been through they have to go to an indoor-only home and it would make sense for the two of them to go together, he said..

ese poor kittens were neglectfully cared for and then cruelly disposed of like rubbish.

For more information, call Mr Miles on 0400 988 931.

Rampant drug use within the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre (MIDC) is under scrutiny in the wake of raids on the centre by customs and immigration ocials.

About 50 Immigration, Customs, AFP and Victoria Police ocers launched a dawn swoop on the centre last Wednesday, uncovering drugs and drug paraphernalia, including pipes and syringes.

Snier dogs searched throughout the centre in a seven-hour operation which followed last months discovery by sta of a suspected ice laboratory operating on the site.

A similar raid on Sydneys Villawood detention centre last Monday also uncovered

contraband items including drugs, pipes and syringes. Ocials are concerned drug use has become rife at immigration detention centres across the country.

Department of Immigration and Border Security deputy secretary Cindy Briscoe said the Operation Safe Centres raid at Maribyrnong was based on intelligence gathered by the Department, Customs and centre operators Serco Australia.

We have a zero tolerance to any violent or illegal behaviour in our centres and detainees and visitors should be put on notice: any contraband hidden inside a detention centre will be found, she said.

Operation Safe Centres is about ensuring all those people who reside at, visit or work in

immigration detention centres can feel safe in those facilities without the threat of any sort of contraband.

Contraband items conscated in the Maribyrnong raid were referred to police and future charges may be laid.

e raids coincide with a review of MIDC security following the escape of at least ve detainees in the past four months, including the freeing of one man by an outlaw bikie gang.

e Department of Immigration is also investigating allegations that MIDC security guards may be using excessive force against detainees. Centre insiders have claimed a rise in physical assaults, and two sta have been dismissed following dozens of complaints about harassment and bullying.

More than ve family violence incidents a day were reported on average in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay last year.

Reports in Hobsons Bay have more than doubled in the past ve years, jumping to 1034 last year compared with 890 the previous year and 503 in 2010. e total included 578 assaults, 79 justice procedures oences (for example, intervention order breaches) and 176 sexual oences.

Hobsons Bay police inspector Richard Paterson said there had been a large increase in breaches of intervention orders, parole and bail.

With the establishment of the family violence teams, our police members are proactively targeting family violence and recidivism in family violence.

Inspector Paterson said greater reporting of family violence accounted for an increase of more than 10 per cent in the past year.

Over a third of family violence incidents reported resulted in charges being laid, he said.

We are using all our available options and holding oenders to account, laying charges against them, bringing them before the courts and sending a clear message that family violence wont be tolerated.

Reported incidents in Maribyrnong have skyrocketed from 328 in 2010 to 848 in 2014.

Maribyrnong polices Inspector Michelle Young said the increase was due to more victims speaking out. Its becoming recognised and accepted that its not tolerated and in the

past 12 months in particular there has been an increased public campaign and legislative change.

Inspector Young said family violence was very much a priority for Victoria Police, as shown by Acting Chief Commissioner Tim Cartwrights announcement last Tuesday of Australias rst Family Violence Command, dedicated to family violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

Police referred 820 women in January and 760 women in February to Footscray-based Womens Health West (WHW). Its chief executive Robyn Gregory expects this gure to rise as more women gain condence in the system. Weve got a government thats taking family violence seriously, politicians who are taking it seriously; there are services available and Australian of the year, Rosie Batty, has put family violence more front and centre on the agenda, Dr Gregory said.

Police Minister and Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said police attended a family violence incident every eight minutes in 2014. We welcome the fact that more people are coming forward and reporting family violence to police, but this is revealing the true scale of the family violence emergency that our community faces.

Yarraville West Primary School pupils are making moves to stamp out bullying once and for all.

e pupils launched their own Bulldoze Bullying brochure last Friday as part of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence.

Teacher Fiona Short said a group of pupils spent the day visiting classrooms to distribute the brochure, exchange wristbands with ant-bullying messages, and explain to other students how to deal with bullying.

Last year, we surveyed the students and identied what issues were happening for the kids, she said.

Over 85 per cent of our issues were happening in the yard.

Ms Short said it was possible to nd a lot

of information and material about bullying, but having the students involved in creating their own brochure was a way to give them ownership of the problem and help the message sink in.

We think having this made by the kids, and for kids, is much more powerful, she said

Yarraville Wests actions to tackle bullying have secured the school status as an eSmart School.

An initiative of e Alannah and Madeline Foundation, the program helps schools improve cybersafety and reduce cyberbullying and bullying in general.

A son of a slain Melbourne crime gure has been charged aer shooting himself in the groin.

Police are not investigating if the injuries to Omar Chaouk, of Brooklyn, were caused by anyone else.

Chaouks wounds prevented him from appearing in a Melbourne court on ursday aer his arrest on Tuesday at Sunshine Hospital by members of the Santiago taskforce.

His lawyer Melinda Walker told Melbourne Magistrates Court her client had chosen not to appear from the Custody Centre because hes got some injuries which make it dicult for him to come up.

Chaouk, 23, was treated under guard at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and later charged with oences that include being a prohibited person in possession of a rearm, having used a rearm and with robbing a man of $10,000 while armed with a .22 handgun.

e young man is the son of murdered crime patriarch Macchour Chaouk and the brother of Mohamed Ali Chaouk, who was shot dead during a police raid in 2005.

Prosecutor Michael Roper said Chaouk was charged on March 18 and asked magistrate Franz Holzert to remand him to June 25.

Young African men in Melbournes west are turning to social media to help cut heavy drinking in their community.

Peer mentors are working with lmmaker Ez Eldin Deng to create a series of short videos as part of the cohealth arts generator be a brother project.

Lead peer mentor Augustino Daw said it is time to open the lid on the complex issue of young men in the African community drinking heavily, oen to erase memories of a war-torn past or to deal with the diculties of nding stable work and housing.

Its a fact that many young African men are drinking heavily but the community isnt talking about it, he said.

What we want to do is to make some short and compelling videos that will grab the attention of young Africans about the dangers of heavy drinking.

Mr Daw, originally from Sudan, said you never saw or heard from African-Australians in existing health messages, making it dicult for them to connect with the community.

Health messages will be made by young Africans for young Africans, he said.

We need to see our faces, hear our languages, and see our situations so we recognise our real experiences of being part of African and white Australian communities.

Mr Daw wants the VicHealth-funded video messages to prompt young Africans to think about and support each other to feel less alone and to be less likely to drink to cope with problems.

We will include young Africans talking about what alcohol has done to their life and other young Africans who can show a dierent way of life, he said.

We want to encourage people to become brothers and sisters, provide support and oer alternatives to getting drunk.

Cohealth chief executive Lyn Morgain said the project builds on the successful story of arts

improving the health of hard to reach people. We need to try harder to reach out and

connect with people who do not see themselves represented in mainstream media, health messaging or health promotion.

A Williamstown-based boat with two men on board caught re in Port Phillip Bay on Saturday, prompting a reminder for boaters to re-proof their vessels.

Fireghters were called to the burning boat o Station Pier in Port Melbourne shortly aer 12.30pm.

e MFBs Commander Steve Watts said the re was caused by the engine on the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club vessel overheating.

e engine overheated and smoke and steam started coming out of the engine bay

compartment, Commander Watts said. e two people on board actually tried to extinguish the re, and they did a reasonably good job but then it was so hot that they werent then game to keep the engine covers open. So they shut them down and radioed for assistance through the coast guard.

Twelve reghters and members of the water police responded to the call from the Volunteer Coast Guard.

MFB spokesman Ross Duncan said the re was contained to electrical wiring in the engine compartment. A Volunteer Coast Guard vessel assisted with towing the vessel to Ann Street

Ambulance response times for life-threatening emergencies in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay are worse than ve years ago, a report released last week shows.

e Working with Paramedics to End the Ambulance Crisis interim report by a parliamentary committee compared average ambulance response times in 2013-14 with those of 2008-09.

In Hobsons Bay, paramedics achieved the 15-minute target for code 1 incidents 79 per

If theyre picking up someone locally, theyre most likely taken close by and crews can be ramped for hours at a time.

Sometimes theres 10 ambulances there, and theyre eectively treated in hospital corridors using ambulance crews and equipment.

e Victorian Auditor-Generals report into emergency services response times, tabled in Parliament last week, found the average time taken for paramedics to respond to 90 per cent of code 1 cases had blown out from 19 minutes in 2009 to 22.4 minutes by 2014.

cent of the time in 2013-14. is was down from 87 per cent of the time in 2008-09.

In Maribyrnong, the code 1 target was met 87 per cent of the time last nancial year, down from 93 per cent ve years ago. Average response times for code 2 incidents increased from 20.19 minutes to 30.11 minutes.

Ambulance Employees Australia assistant secretary Danny Hill said ramping at hospitals was a huge issue as was a awed dispatch system.

Its still happening very frequently in Sunshine and Footscray, Mr Hill said.

But Auditor-General John Doyle noted response times were not the only measure of emergency service performance.

Other measures such as health outcomes for ambulance patients and community satisfaction are necessary to build a holistic view of eectiveness.

Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the government was working with paramedics to improve response times and had ended the Liberals war on paramedics.

e fruits of a $150,000 Asylum Seeker Resource Centre crowdfunding campaign have hit the road.

Exactly 12 months aer reaching a fund- raising target, the Food Justice Truck has made its rst foray into Footscray.

e locally-custom-built truck is oering its nutritious wares at Footscray Primary School from 3-7pm each Friday, and resource centre manager Russell Shields plans to roll out a weekly roster of locations.

He says the truck crew is selling fruit, vegetables, whole foods and other healthy items to the public at market rates while oering a 75 per cent discount to asylum seekers.

is was about improving food security for asylum seekers but also to build community connections, he said. Its a win-win parents

can pick their kids up and shop at the same time, but its also a great cause.

All fresh produce is purchased from Spade & Barrow, a wholesale business that buys whole crops from Australian farmers.

Mr Shields says the project is a unique way of bringing people together to talk about issues such as Australias treatment of refugees and asylum seekers while ensuring access to good-quality fresh food for those most in need.

e operation relies on a team of volunteers and ongoing support from the wider community making purchases to help subsidise the food bought by asylum seekers.

Born in the Mae La refugee camp in ailand, Karen refugee Paw Paw San Ba is revealing what lies Behind is Smile as part of a community art project.

Developed as part of the federal Labor government-launched Racism: it stops with me campaign, the project features stories from 12 local residents and their images printed on ags, at libraries and the Laverton Community Hub. e campaign also aims to promote cultural diversity and challenge stereotypes.

I am Karen, not ai nor Burmese, Ms San Ba said. I didnt choose to be a refugee. Believe it or not, I always thought I had everything in this life and I felt like a princess even though I was born unlawfully in a country that didnt recognise me as their citizen.

I now live in a society where there are so

many ways to reach my goals and have the opportunity to get access to education, unlike when I was a child.

Overall, I am blessed and Im so lucky compared to some of the other children around the world.

e message she hopes to convey through the project is that nobody is born to be a victim of racism. We may be dierent from each other in appearance, skin colour and race, but inside we are all the same.

e council is seeking feedback on the project. For more information and to read participants stories, visit http://www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/Community/Multicultural/Behind_This_Smile.

Students at one of Melbournes oldest established girls schools returned from their summer break to discover a new series of contemporary learning spaces and a visual communications centre, all supported by the latest education technologies.

St Aloysius in Curran Street, North Melbourne, led by principal Mary Farah, embarked on an ambitious redevelopment project during the holidays that included 11 classrooms and the new visual communications centre as well as the construction of a new school entrance on Brougham Street.

e college was founded in 1887 by the Sisters of Mercy to educate young women to go out into the world as condent initiators of change and improvement. Its 500-plus student campus includes a range of 19th and 20th century buildings which, under Farahs direction, are gradually undergoing their own changes and improvement. e building improvements are part of a comprehensive, staged school transformation driving a broad spectrum of innovation including the introduction of iPads for all teachers and students, a digital diary system and new school uniform.

Last year the school opened a year seven learning centre within an existing building and this July the school aims to open a new STEM Centre for its integrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics program. Farah says revitalising the colleges buildings is critical to the further development of its culture of learning.

We understand the new generation of students needs a new way of learning and teaching, and developing contemporary learning spaces is an important part of this. As teachers and school administrators we need to run and catch up with our students in the digital world theyre well ahead of us.

We have to make sure we are always at the forefront of learning so that we are never behind. Our approach is about improving all the time and doing everything better. We must and will continue developing our sta skills

St Aloysius engaged specialist education architects at Clarke Hopkins Clarke to help the school transform a series of these classrooms into fresh, open and modern learning spaces. Clarke Hopkins Clarke project architect Ezio Costa says learning project architect Ezio Costa says learning outcomes are always better when students feel outcomes are always better when students feel comfortable in theirenvironment.

Its not only about improving the physical environment. When students are given high-class facilities they have a greater sense of value in themselves and their work.

Over the summer, large expanses of acoustic and thermal glass were installed, opening the rooms to corridors and connecting to their external environment.

A new three-metre high, full-width window in the classroom blocks north-facing stairwell wall provides an outlook into a garden courtyard and allows natural light to penetrate deep into the previously dim block.

Mobile walls can open between several of the classrooms to allow team teaching of larger groups when required. Farah says every one of the schools 72 year 12 students in 2014 received a round-one oer for the tertiary course of their choice and she attributes this to being part of a smaller school where sta know students well and can facilitate personalised learning.

EGGS-ACT SCIENCEWhat is it about the thought of poaching eggs that sends people into a tailspin? Turning out a perfectly poached egg - one that holds its shape during the cooking process and has a lovely oozy, gooey golden centre - can be a challenge, yes. But Im here to tell you its really not that difcult!

Ive heard of countless different poaching methods from cooking the egg in cling lm to adding vinegar to the water and stirring up whopping great whirlpools in the pan. But the best and simplest one Ive come across and use all the time - is the one I call the Margaret Fulton method: Bring a pan of water to the boil, carefully method: Bring a pan of water to the boil, carefully break in the eggs then turn off the heat, put the lid on the pan and let the eggs sit there like that for three minutes before removing with a slotted spoon.

Another method Id like to try is the Heston Blumenthal approach: Put a sieve over a bowl and Blumenthal approach: Put a sieve over a bowl and break the egg onto the sieve. The runny part of the egg white will drain into the bowl, leaving the rest of the egg on the sieve. Lower the sieve into a pan of boiling water and let it cook for about 2 minutes. This way you have total control over the process.

The key to success is that the eggs MUST be as fresh as possible. Otherwise theyll just disintegrate, no matter what method you try.

Do you have another foolproof method for poached eggs? Id love to hear about it.Email me at [email protected]

A venue can make or break a special occasion, which is why its important to choose a place with excellent customer service and diverse bistro and function menus. A place such as Altona RSL.

Our function room caters to a wide range of people, from intimate gatherings to parties of 200 people, bistro manager Wendy Selvidge says. Were more than happy to customise our function room to suit each individuals needs.

Altona RSL caters to everything from engagements, weddings and milestone birthdays to school graduations, work conferences and sport presentations.

Theres an extensive range of dining options for functions, including a buffet, nger food and set menus, along with a private bar for the room.

And theres a dance oor and projector to keep guests happy.

Its not just the function room that draws crowds to Altona RSL, as Gunners Bar & Bistro is also a hit with couples and families.

The bistro menu has everything from steaks, pasta and risotto dishes to seafood and oriental meals with a twist.

We have weekly specials which incorporate fresh produce that changes depending on the season, but theres sure to be something for everyone, including gluten-free and vegetarian options head chef Chris Cox says.

And our ever-changing mouth-watering desserts are worth leaving room for.

Popular entrees include the Greek lamb salad, paprika-spiced and served on a fresh salad with toasted Turkish bread and tzatziki; and hand-made Chinese-spiced pork spring rolls with plum and ginger dipping sauces.

For main, its hard to beat the Asian-style pork rib-eye on a noodle and bok choy stir-fry with honey-plum glaze; or the veal scaloppini in a creamy garlic and mushroom sauce with mash potato, wilted spinach and seasonal vegetables.

House-made desserts, including bread and butter or sticky-date puddings, are the ideal way to top off a hearty meal.

We welcome new customers to dine in our bistro or enjoy their next function with us and look forward to seeing our regulars at the RSL, Wendy says.

More police will be out on the roads this Easter, ensuring everyone gets home safely to their families after the holiday.

The Easter campaign will be conducted from April 2-6 to reduce road trauma over what is traditionally a high-risk period.

Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said Victoria Police would use a strategic and focused approach to target speed, alcohol and drug use, driver distraction, fatigue and seatbelts.

Police intelligence over the past three months shows speed and careless driving are among the leading causes of road trauma in Victoria.

RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings said it had been demonstrated time after time that speed was a contributing factor in most road crashes.

Stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you are facing, he said. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.

Police in marked and unmarked vehicles will target our major arterial roads, freeways and highways throughout the state during the Easter holiday break.

Mr Giddings said the entire community had a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.

Road trauma isnt just about the people who die its about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones, he said.

The community can report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers on1800 333 000.

Dont be a roadstat, says cop

Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge of Melton Highway Patrol. (Wayne Hawkins)

Drive in the hours you are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Adapt to the conditions of the road, taking into account weather and the quality of the road. If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive. Check your vehicles tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights before you leave.

The stars have aligned and this rare opportunity has arisen to snatch up two houses at a gorgeous Altona beachside location in one go.

Both houses, on a single title, were lovingly owner-built and have been immaculately kept over many years. Each was designed to meet the changing needs of an ever-expanding family and to provide the best in modern living.

Whether a modern refurbishment to the existing homes is on the cards or splitting the property for multiple dwellings, both are superbly positioned on an enormous 1084-square metre block separated by

a solar-heated saltwater pool. To the left of entry (main house) is the step-down family room with plush carpet underfoot and natural light streaming through the large window which captures the last of the afternoon warmth each day.

A dining area adjoins this room, separated by a graduated dividing feature wall which can be closed off by a sliding door for a more formal dinner setting.

Its straight into the living hub next which is centred on the modern timber kitchen with granite benchtops and stainless-steel wall oven, gas cooktop and rangehood. The family-meals area sprawls into clearly

dened areas: the tiled meals zone with a oor-to-ceiling north-facing bay window ooding the space with natural light; and the family area towards the rear with an impressive timber-lined vaulted ceiling.

Three bedrooms are down the right-hand side, starting with the main which has a walk-through wardrobe and fully-tiled en suite with a corner spa and separate shower.

The other good-sized bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom has a bath and separate shower.

Off the living hub, a stunning pergola area with clear cafe blinds enables

year-round outdoor dining and summertime entertainment by the pool.

A laundry and remote-controlled double garage round out this house.

The second residence includes two spacious bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, open and light-lled living areas, a modern kitchen and a large bathroom.

Altona Beach, Pier Street shops, restaurants and cafe culture are within easy reach, along with Harrington Square shopping centre, train station and parklands.
