    Hobsons VoiceEvery voice in celebration and a family hand in hand. So sang Nikki Webster at the Olympics and so too will students from Hobsons Bay next weekend at Williamstown Town Hall. Hobsons Voice, the much loved primary school concert, returns to Williamstown Town Hall for its ninth annual performance and this years theme is Lets Celebrate!, marking 20 years of the City of Hobsons Bay.

    The event is a tradition for local schools, with nine primary schools taking to the stage at 2pm on Saturday 10 August, performing songs like Under Southern Skies, Mamma Mia by Abba, a Beatles medley, and Birdys People Help the People.

    The following school choirs are participating: Altona North Primary School, Seaholme Primary School, Altona Primary School, Queen of Peace Primary School, Newport Gardens Primary School, Newport Lakes Primary School, St Marys Primary School Altona, Williamstown North Primary School, and Williamstown Primary School.

    Victorias paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times.

    Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012.

    To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

    This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes:

    a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) this is twice as much as the previous offer

    an immediate 6% wage increase

    an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 a 12% increase in total.

    Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commissions arbitration of their work value claim.

    Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive:

    10 weeks paid leave annually

    10 weeks paid parental leave

    6 months long service leave after 15 years service

    tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year.

    Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service.

    These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment.

    The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers.

    This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives.

    TAC releases fatality statsTwo road deaths were recorded in Hobsons Bay last year, according to figures released by the Transport Accident Commission. One person died in a road incident in Maribyrnong. Ten people in each city were hospitalised for more than two weeks for road trauma last year. One road death was recorded in Hobsons Bay in 2012; there were five in Maribyrnong.

    Shes made this years shortlist, but Maree Clarke already knows what it takes to win the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards.

    A former awards judge, the Yarraville artist has taken her place among the 35 shortlisted artists vying for a share of $50,000 in prizes, including the $30,000 Deadly Art Award.

    The finalists hail from across the state and practise a range of art, from traditional basket weaving and multimedia to sculpture and photography.

    A former senior curator of the Koorie

    Heritage Trust, Clarke said her selected work, Born of the Land, was designed to represent her relationship with the land.

    We are all born of the land and we will go back to the land, she said. This work is also about mourning and loss.

    The winners of the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards will be announced on August 23, with an exhibition of shortlisted works at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from August 23 to October 5. Clarkes work will be part of the North South East West exhibition at fortyfive downstairs, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, from August 5-16.

    From comedian to singer, author to screenwriter, radio host to teacher, practical joker to political candidate, Tim Ferguson has always been a cheeky monkey.

    He shot to fame in the late 1980s as a member of comedy outfit the Doug Anthony All Stars, a group of former buskers from Canberra.

    Alongside fellow All Stars Paul McDermott and Richard Fidler, he regularly appeared on the ABCs The Big Gig and quickly gained a cult following. Now, 20 years after they split, DAAS are back and will perform their only Victorian shows at the Yarraville Club next month.

    While original member Richard Fidler is unable to join the reunion, Ferguson said he was looking forward to once again sharing a unique brand of improvisation and topical, sometimes controversial musical comedy.

    Performing with the All Stars has always been great fun, he said. Generally, we head out on to stage and start talking and we take it from there.

    Maribyrnong deputy mayor Nam Quach has launched a passionate plea that federal Attorney General George Brandis withdraw proposed amendments to the Racial Discrimination Act, claiming he continues to receive racial abuse about his Asian heritage.

    Cr Quach spoke out as Maribyrnong joined more than 67 councils from around Australia in adopting a motion on July 22 against the changes.

    The governments planned amendments to the act would remove provisions making it an offence to offend, insult and humiliate on the grounds of race, while introducing vilification as an offence.

    The motion, put forward by Cr Sarah Carter, supports the fundamental importance of Section 18C of the act, recognising it provides protection to individuals from offensive behavior because of race, colour, national or ethnic origin.

    According to Local Government Victoria, Maribyrnong has the second most ethnically diverse population among Victorian regions, with 40 per cent of residents born outside Australia.

    Cr Quach said he continued to encounter racial abuse.

    This is an issue dear to my heart, he said. Ive suffered racial abuse since I was a kid only three days ago [July 19] I was in the city with friends and a car pulled up and [the occupants] started hurling racial obscenities out the window.

    Cr Carter said the changes to the act would tear at the fabric of Australias multiculturalism.

    As one of the most culturally diverse cities in the state, any changes to the Racial Discrimination Act will significantly diminish the rights of the people we represent, she said.

    Cr Martin Zakharov said the proposed amendments were a backward step and an embarrassment to all of us.
