Strand Ward Altona North Newport Spotswood South Kingsville WilliamstownOld Woollen Mills siteThe recent decision by VCAT to approve a 34 metre, 10 storey apartment development on the Former Port Phillip Woollen Mills site was a great let-down for the community. The Council is currently considering VCATs decision. While we support redevelopment of the site, Councils position for many years has been to protect the mainly low-rise heritage and coastal character of Williamstown. Concern was also flagged regarding the traffic, car parking and social impacts of the development, as well as its close proximity to major hazard facilities. More information is available on Councils website.

Vision NewportThis is your chance to help plan for a better future for Newport by telling us what you like or dont like about living, working and playing in the area. Were currently at the scoping stage: collecting together information, suggestions and ideas which will be used to guide future planning. More information can be found on Councils website by going to the Have a say section.

Floodlighting for sports clubsFor our sport clubs in 2015, the message is clear: let there be light. Preliminary investigation and design is underway for floodlights at Lynch Reserve with two new floodlights

scheduled to go up in 2015. Around the same time, two new towers will go up at the south-western end of Fearon Reserve. Plus, $200,000 is in the budget for an oval upgrade at JT Gray Reserve.

Arts and cultureTwo very special cultural events are coming to Hobsons Bay in August. A Capital Collection at Williamstown Library and presented in partnership with the National Capital Authority, showcases fashion, photos and memorabilia to mark the history of our nations capital. Its free and it runs until 4 September. Plus, the much anticipated Substation Contemporary Arts Prize takes place at the Substation in Newport on 15 August at 6pm and exhibits until 22 October.

Cherry Lake Ward Altona Altona Meadows Altona North Brooklyn SeaholmeBudget 2014-15A great deal happened in July including the adoption of Councils 2014-15 budget. As well as delivering our largest program of capital works in some time, the budget focuses on important long-term strategies. $30.6 million will be spread across the municipality with renewal of roads, new footpaths and drains, cycling paths, car parks and upgrades to sporting and recreation facilities. Good news includes JK Grant Reserve in Altona benefitting from $200,000 to develop a concept design which will allow us to put a funding application to the state government in 2015 for the 2015-16 financial year.

This year, we will begin work on our Integrated Transport Strategy connecting our road, rail, footpaths and bike paths and making them more accessible. Resources have also been allocated to our new Economic Development Unit to increase engagement with local businesses.

Altona North Childcare Centre Open House Melbourne may have been and gone, but on Saturday 16 August Altona North Childrens Centre will be opening its doors to the community, families, friends and professionals. This is a great opportunity for you to come and explore the centres unique environments and meet the educators implementing the Reggio Emilia approach.

Brooklyn dog off-leash areaThe six month dog off leash trial at Lynch Road Reserve, Brooklyn finished at the end of June and were currently considering the submissions. We recognise that in residential areas, open spaces to walk with your dog off-leash are extremely important. It helps dogs relieve boredom and reduce unwanted behaviour such as excessive barking. We will be holding a meeting with Brooklyn residents to discuss the trial and other local issues on 20 August at 5pm at Brooklyn Community Hall, Cypress Avenue. All residents are welcome.

Wetlands Ward Altona Meadows Laverton Seabrook Epsom Street school siteWe have purchased a key piece of land in Laverton (the former Epsom Street school site). The community has long rallied for local amenity to be restored following demolition of the school. A portion of the site is intended for much needed public open space, and through a community consultation process, planning for the public open space and potential uses of the remainder of the site will be considered.

Tree plantingYou may have noticed some recent media about the important relationship between trees and a communitys health. With that in mind, thank you to everyone who turned out for National Tree Day at

Altona Coastal Park, Kororoit Creek and Skeleton Creek. All up, over 4,000 trees, shrubs and grasses were planted.

Bruce Comben ReserveThe car park upgrade is now complete and theres also $200,000 in the 2014-15 budget for the design of an extension to the pavilion. Preliminary design should commence September with construction to begin around April 2015, all things going to plan.

Footpaths$1.25 million is in the 2014-15 budget for road rehabilitation and over $100,000 for footpaths, making pedestrian access easier. New footpaths along sections of Ailsa Street South, Ascot Street, Ascot

Street South, Balmoral Street, Carinza Avenue, Fitzpatrick Drive, and Lunn Court. Additionally, $80,000 has been set aside for a footpath to be constructed at Pipeline Reserve in Seabrook between Shane Avenue and Point Cook Road. If all goes to plan this will make a nice local Christmas present for 2014.

Seabrook tree pruningPruning of street trees is set to commence in the Seabrook area on 20 August so you may notice workers tidying up the callistemon and spotted gums. The pruning serves a couple of functions: it provides power line clearance for some trees and branches, but it also gives us a chance to check the trees and ensure theyre both safe and healthy.

    Where learning and friendship bloom

    By Cameron Tait

Every morning, a western suburbs man puts on a collar and tie and heads off to work. At least, thats what he tells his wife.

But he doesnt have a job he lost it several months before.

Its just one of the heart-wrenching stories told by those helped by Willing Older Workers (WOW), a West Footscray-based organisation that helps unemployed mature-aged people, senior citizens and their families.

Run entirely by volunteers, WOW was established by Howard and Marilyn King after they identified a desperate need to support mature-aged people who fell through the cracks of the welfare system.

These people often have assets, such as a home or a car, and dont qualify for benefits such as health care or pension cards, while the mortgage, rates, insurance and utility bills continue to stack up.

This is where WOW comes in. With the assistance of organisations including Foodbank, SecondBite, Corporate Events and Cupcake Central, WOW assembles weekly food packages that are distributed to those in need by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Mrs King said WOW was formed after her husband, who was 62 at the time, was retrenched and unable to get another job, despite 40 years in his trade.

I was studying documentary making at the time and after seeing him put in job application after job application, I decided to make a documentary on the subject, she said.

I did a survey of mature-aged unemployed people and was inundated with stories of mental health problems and suicide attempts.

I read out some of these stories to my husband and we knew we had to help.

They formed a support group and hosted a morning tea at West Footscray library, where they heard startling stories about the financial pressures faced by mature-aged jobseekers.

We asked how many people had stopped taking their medication and hands went up, she said.

We asked people what they missed most about not having a job and one woman said fresh fruit, because she couldnt afford it.

An out-of-work teacher with a young daughter came to us begging for Christmas lunch and two weeks later she was in emergency suffering from malnutrition. She had a block of land which she couldnt sell, and for eight months, all she was eating was a bowl of porridge a day.

It brings tears to your eyes.Mrs King said unemployed mature-aged

people were the hidden face of poverty in Australia and called on state and federal governments to provide more incentives for businesses to hire older workers.

With WOWs weekly deliveries still being shoehorned into Mr Kings trailer and the cars of volunteers, the group is looking to raise $53,000 to purchase a new van.

For more details, or to donate, phone 0477 479 191 or visit www.wow-willingolderworkers.com.au.

If you or anyone you know needs help, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14.

100% of your fi re levy goes to our fi re servicesLast year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfi res Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victorias fi re services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession.

100 per cent of the fi re levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes fi refi ghters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fi re stations and 2,300 trucks.

Each year, Victorias fi refi ghters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fi res, fi res in the home, and workplace incidents. Its a fairer fi re levy.

When Jenny Sadler first donned a McDonalds uniform aged 15, she never imagined it was the beginning of a long and prosperous career.

After starting out as a crew member, the Williamstown resident is one of McDonalds Australias most successful franchisees, with 10 restaurants under her belt.

The responsibility of running a business is more than opening the doors, the mother of three says.

Theres a whole lot of things behind the scenes.

Ms Sadler started with McDonalds 30 years ago at Emerton, New South Wales, and deferred an accounting course at university to break into McDonalds management.

She worked her way up the ranks, becoming a store manager, supervisor and franchise business consultant before taking up a senior management position making her responsible for half the stores in Victoria all by the time she turned 26.

Ms Sadler took care of the franchise side of the business for a year, before moving to Adelaide in 2001 and running the entire South Australian market for Maccas.

After a year, she was promoted to director of operations for the southern region of Australia.

The post of assistant vice-president quickly followed.

In 2007, Ms Sadler jumped at the chance to become a franchisee, taking over stores at St Albans and Taylors Lakes.

The St Albans store was one of the first to introduce halal certification after surveys revealed a high number of Muslim customers.

Ms Sadler has since taken on stores at Avondale Heights, Deer Park, Laverton North,

Working her way up food chainDerrimut, Braybrook, Burnside and, most recently, Sunshine and Sunshine Marketplace.

She now oversees more than 900 employees, and its them she credits for making her stores a success.

I have a great team around me, Ms Sadler says.

Every member has their own responsibility and understanding of their role.

We work hard on development, especially the managers.

I look at my experience at McDonalds and I think its my responsibility to provide these experiences to my people.

Ms Sadler, who is married to Peter Sadler of Peter Sadler Transport, has also led the charge to raise money for a new childrens ward at Sunshine Hospital.

She helped collect more than $118,000 through a recent charity dinner at Moonee Valley Racing Club.

Ronald McDonald House has committed another $200,000 to fully fund a home away from home for the families of sick kids.

Ms Sadler says she strongly believes its important to support the area you live and work in.

Im really proud to be working and living in the west.

She says that with so many challenges to face every day, going to work is never a chore.

I never expected to have this as my career, but I love it.

Its my responsibility to provide these experiences to my people - Jenny Sadler

Open your heart to wests kidsBy Charlene Macaulay

Wanted: people with a spare bedroom and an open heart.

The Salvation Armys Westcare Childrens Services is on the lookout for anyone interested in helping some of the western suburbs most vulnerable children.

Recruitment officer Monika Vukovic said the organisation, which has offices across the west, has to turn away most requests for foster care because there simply isnt enough carers on the books.

Westcare provided 187 children and teenagers with support through its 58 carers in 2013. Ms Vukovic estimates Westcare needs at least another 50 carers to make its caseload manageable.

With kids, its not a one size fits all approach, Ms Vukovic said.

If theyre not supported now to have their basic needs met and meet their full potential, what will happen in 10, 15 years time when theyre adults?

Ms Vukovic said foster care provided parents with time to sort out what needs to be sorted.

Part of our role is to make that transition as smooth as possible.

Ms Vukovic said most foster children ended up going back to their parents. Those who dont typically find a new family of their own with their foster parents.

Ms Vukovic said anyone could become a foster carer, including married couples, singles, gay and lesbian couples and full and part-time workers. Theres no perfect time to be a foster carer, she said. You just need to be willing.

For more details about becoming a foster carer, phone 9312 3544.

Its years since an all-male council sat in gawdy armchairs under the striking modernist dome of Altonas civic chamber.

Now the community is being invited to sit down to Devonshire tea and view an exhibition celebrating the former Altona City Council, which existed from 1968-94.

    The Country Womens Association will

provide tea and scones at Altona Homestead on September 6 and on the first Sunday of every month, from 11am-4pm.

Altona Laverton Historical Society president Peter Weaver curated the exhibition which features his late father and former mayor, Harry Weaver. The exhibition is a celebration of the Altona City Council with

a display of artefacts from the period: badges, cuff links, mayoral invitations, plaques, memorabilia and photos, he said.

The display can also be viewed at the homestead, in Logan Reserve, for the next four Tuesdays from 11am-2pm.

Work and financial obligations are the biggest causes of stress for Australian men and women, according to a new poll.

Lifelines seventh annual Stress Poll, released last week, showed that 77 per cent of Australians blame work for their feelings of stress.

This was followed by 72 per cent who blamed managing their finances.

Older respondents stress more about their health, a finding of particular concern for the telephone crisis service.

Lifeline is concerned about the high levels of stress in our community and it increases every year, chairman John Brogden said.

If stress lasts a long time or overwhelms our ability to cope, it can have a detrimental effect on our health, well-being and general enjoyment of life.

Calls to the crisis line surged to 77,107 in June, compared to 75,209 in May.

A Lifeline spokeswoman said suicide was specifically mentioned in 21,847 of the calls made in June, compared to 21,058 in May.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics releases its annual data on suicide deaths every March.

An analysis of the most recent figures, those for 2011, show there were 158 suicides in the Medicare Local Area of Macedon Ranges and north-west Melbourne, which includes Brimbank. The figure was above the state average.

If you thought the ship had sailed on all the good properties in this great precinct, youll be thrilled to see this one is still in port.

The stunning waterfront townhouse promises a luxury lifestyle by harnessing the beautifully serene harbour and the city skyline as a backdrop.

One of two townhouses on each side of a retro-fitted Victorian period house, its set on a large block with manicured gardens.

The townhouses were added in 2007 and each has a modern, open layout spread over a 24-square footprint.

Entry into a small foyer leads immediately into a large family-meals area with polished

floorboards which flow throughout. The heart of the house, the kitchen has stone benchtops, a large island bench, timber cabinetry and stainless-steel splashback to match the appliances which include a dishwasher, wall oven, gas cooktop and rangehood.

Moving towards the rear, another family area opens through a large slider to a courtyard surrounded by low-maintenance, well-kept gardens and turf. Theres plenty of space in the courtyard for entertainment and dining in the warmer months.

A powder room and spacious laundry round off the ground level.

Upstairs are three good-sized bedrooms, two with built-in wardrobes, and the main with a walk-through wardrobe and sleek en suite with twin basins and large frameless shower. The main bedroom also has an expansive private balcony with sea and city views which would make a morning coffee a truly joyful experience and warm evenings would be magical looking out to Melbournes twinkling skyline.

Modern conveniences include a split-system, remote-controlled security front gate and secure underground parking.
