Strand Ward Altona North Newport Spotswood South Kingsville WilliamstownFlora ID walk at Greenwich BayDid you know its the 25th anniversary of Australias largest volunteer movement Landcare? To celebrate, environment group Friends of Greenwich Bay will be leading a flora ID walk between 10am and midday on 14 September. Anyone wishing to learn more about local flora needs to meet at The Gatehouse near the athletics track at the far end of The Strand (originally the gatehouse of the old SEC Power Station).

Spring into lifeSpring is on its way and well be springing into life and springing into the west. You may know Spring into life from previous years: it encourages people of all ages to get out and say goodbye to winter. Newport Community Education

Centre, 43 Mason Street will be hosting the Bush Orchestra on 15 September, a musical ensemble with a passion for grass roots music. There will also be calligraphy and mosaics workshops on 18 September, and Williamstown Seniors, 109 Ferguson Street will host line dancing on 16 and 23 September. The full program is available on Councils website (www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au).

From your street to the shopsDrop in to Williamstown Town Hall Chamber on 3 September between 4pm and 7pm to have your say on the Neighbourhood Character Study and Activity Centre Strategy. Other drop-in sessions are available including one at South Kingsville Community Centre on 22 September. From your street to the shops is asking you to take

a big picture perspective and think about neighbourhood character and activity centres in your area. Weve also launched a new, easy way for you to participate online called Participate Hobsons Bay at http://participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/home.

Out on the weekendSeaworks, one of our hidden gems, will this year be hosting a new event: Out on the Weekend. Leading the festival bill will be US muso Justin Townes Earle, as well as charismatic local Henry Wagons, country and folk blender Robert Ellis, as well as Ryan Bingham and Lindi Ortega. The Big Shed at Seaworks is a popular event venue, hosting the recent Eid-al-fitr celebrations as well as car shows, boat shows, markets, performing arts, and the annual Lego expo.

Cherry Lake Ward Altona Altona Meadows Altona North Brooklyn SeaholmeDoug Grant ReserveWell soon be welcoming back our yearly visitors to Hobsons Bay. To coincide with the arrival of our migratory birds, returning from their breeding grounds in the tundra of the northern hemisphere, youll find a new sign at Doug Grant Reserve. The sign, as well as displaying the migratory and resident birds that at various times frequent our wetland areas, will also help build awareness towards the importance of maintaining the birds delicate habitats.

Cherry LakeYou may have seen a helicopter over Cherry Lake last Wednesday. Melbourne Water removed a number of weedy exotic tree species fand placed them in

strategic locations throughout the lake itself so as to improve the habitat for birds. This idea came from numerous customer requests from local park users over the past few years asking for safer nesting sites for birds after repeated dog and fox attacks. There was no cost involved for the Council.

Altona beach marketOn Tuesday 23 September Altona beach market will be celebrating 10 years with activities and a day of celebration. The market, run by the Altona Village Traders Association, is a bit of an institution. On 21 September 2004 the first market was officially opened by the Mayor at the time, Bill Baarini, together with the Ward Councillor Leigh Hardinge. The first

market had 67 stalls, three of which are still running. The idea for the market came as a way to attract more visitors during the typical mid-week lull.

Seaholme foreshoreCouncil has made a submission to the Victorian Governments Coastal Environments Program for a grant to support works along the Seaholme foreshore. The works, taking place from opposite Queen Street to the Cresser Reserve jetty, include construction of a 150 metre revetment wall, a beach access ramp, and realignment and replacement of 70 metres of Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail damaged by the storm event at the end of June.

Wetlands Ward Altona Meadows Laverton Seabrook Public Transport Victoria (PTV)As part of PTVs review, a number of changes have been proposed to services in Seabrook, Altona Meadows and parts of Laverton as well as reinstating bus access to Aviation Road shops and Aircraft station. At our request PTV will hold an additional consultation session in Hobsons Bay on 11 September at the Laverton Hub. This will be a good chance to learn more about the proposed changes to bus services, ask questions and provide feedback so we encourage local commuters to attend this session. You can drop in at any time between 4pm and 7pm. Alternatively, you can fill out an online survey at the PTVs website (ptv.vic.gov.au/wyndham2015).

Laverton Community Hub cafeThe tender has now been awarded for the hubs cafe. The lease, two years with a two year extension option, has been awarded to Wyndham Community Education Centre (WCEC). As part of their proposal, WCEC, one of Victorias largest adult and community education providers, will target training and employment opportunities for local people including the unemployed, those with disability, or people from new and emerging communities. Saffron Kitchen will serve a range of options specialising in vegetarian fare. The hub has had a busy couple of months including hosting the annual battle of the bands competition on 30 August.

Congratulations to the acoustic duo Blue Couch for winning this years competition with a mixture of originals and covers.

McCormack ParkIf youre wondering when youll be able to play on the climbing net and spinner at McCormack Park, it should be completed by the end of the month. The playspace in Laverton is now taking shape with only the final touches remaining, including landscaping and the creation of a sensory garden. As well as the climbing net and spinner, theres a sandpit and digger, rock and boulder seating, timber chimes and tom toms, and a gigantic snake which you may already have noticed from the street.

Parking push about money [Re: Trader anger over paid parking intensifies, Star Weekly, August 27]: Also note that Maribyrnong council recently changed the amount of free residential parking permits it allows and is now charging for a second permit.

Add this idea to the proposed parking meters and I cant see how its going to help create more parking spots out of thin air. But it definitely improves the councils finances.

Worse still, those who live in two-building residential dwellings are only allowed one parking permit each. Those moving in to multi-dwelling setups are now disallowed from even applying for a single permit.

Penguin deaths: Sick of spin I fail to see how the commercial fisherman could be devastated when a member of the public phoned it in [Altona beach penguins death: Fishing net the culprit, Star Weekly online, September 1].

If the fisherman was so devastated, why didnt he report the accident, as he called it? What are the authorities doing? I suppose we will be fed more spin. mel, via web

Probe into freeway fatalityPolice are appealing for witnesses after a Richmond man was struck and killed on the Westgate Freeway near Millers Road, Altona, on Monday morning. Investigators have been told the man, 67, was seen standing next to a dark green MX5 coupe at the time of the collision about 7am. He died at the scene. A truck driver is helping police with their inquiries. Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Opposition to car park planMore than 670 protesters have signed an online petition calling for Maribyrnong council to halt the proposed introduction of paid parking in Yarraville and Seddon. The Yarraville Village says no to paid parking Facebook page has also attracted 800 likes in less than a fortnight. A feedback session was held at Yarravilles Sun Theatre last night, with another session due at Footscray Town Hall from 4.30-7.30 tonight.

Circumstances of death uncertainThe state coroner has handed down an open finding into the death of a young Ethiopian-Australian man whose body was found in the Maribyrnong River in 2011. Michael Atakelt, 22, was last seen alive on CCTV footage at Newmarket train station about 7pm on June 26, 2011. A fisherman found his body in the Maribyrnong River on July 7 that year. Mr Atakelts father, Getachew Seyoum, has maintained his son was murdered. But state coroner Ian Gray said there wasnt sufficient evidence to suggest that was the case.

Teen faces traffic chargesA Lalor teenager has been arrested after a high-speed police pursuit from Altona North to Lara. Police allege the 17-year-old boy, a Werribee girl, 13, a Truganina girl, 15, a Craigieburn girl, 15, and a Reservoir boy, 13, were spotted in a stolen red Nissan Pulsar on Blackshaws Road, Altona North, about 9.25pm on August 28. Officers chased the car through the western suburbs to Lara. The pursuit came to an end when the cars occupants attempted to flee on foot. They were eventually arrested with the help of a police helicopter. The Lalor teen was charged with a string of driving and theft offences and remanded to face a childrens court at a later date. The cars passengers were released pending further inquiries.

    12 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 3, 2014

    By Ben Thomas

I always take notice when overseas winemakers come over and talk up Australian wines. Its fascinating to hear their views on who is doing well and what regions and wine styles theyre excited about.

When Michel Chapoutier (Rhne Valley and Victorias Pyrenees) talks, you listen; likewise Jacques Lurton (Bordeaux and Kangaroo Island). Napa Valley winemaker Chris Carpenter was recently spruiking Australian cabernet sauvignon.

Carpenter specialises in the Bordeaux varieties of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc and makes wine at a series of vineyards in the mountains of Californias Napa Valley.

A couple of years ago, Carpenters employers, Americas Jackson Family Wines, bought McLaren Vales Clarendon vineyard. The name may not mean much to many of us but the vineyard has been a constant supplier to Penfolds and Hardys top wines for years. It could easily be considered one of Australias best vineyards.

The Jacksons installed a local winemaker Charlie Seppelt and Carpenter as consulting winemaker to oversee their new wines, labelled Hickinbotham after the man who planted the vineyard in the 1970s. Carpenter is here to concentrate on cabernet sauvignon.

When he arrived, Carpenter says he knew little about Australian cabernet sauvignon and its regional styles so he set out to learn as much as he could about them. He was pretty excited by what he found.

It was a great pleasure for me to come out and learn about cabernet in Australia. In my first month here in Australia I probably tasted 100 Aussie cabs, Carpenter says, adding

that more interesting, better wines are now appearing on American shelves.

A friend of mine collected Aussie wines in the 90s when people collected Aussie wines. But the US got pounded with a lot of plonk, which is a shame, and the understanding of Australian wines faded in the States.

It was so nice to understand that theres incredible wines being made here in Australia.

Carpenters vineyardAfter making wine in Tuscany and the Napa Valley, Chris Carpenter jumped at the chance to make wine in Australia. That vineyard, and the history of that vineyard and the brands it has contributed to, and its unique place in a nether region between McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills was something I wanted to explore and understand and see what I could do with the cabernet there.Theres really, really old vine cabernet in that vineyard that we dont see in the Napa Valley because phylloxera just wiped us out 30 years ago. Theres 80-year-old vines that are gnarly and deep-rooted.Theres a unique part of that vineyard that shows the same characteristics as the mountains do in the Napa. It helps grape concentration in a unique way and thats something I have great familiarity with.

The amount of talent and incredible winegrowing areas is unsurpassed.

One of the things Ive learned throughout that process or at least have tried to learn is what is the understanding of cabernet in Australia.

When I approached the cabernet at Hickinbotham a lot of that tasting was in my mind. That black olive note, the little

    A cab savvy American

bit of a green note you get in cabernet in Australia. I wanted to maintain that, add a little Bordeaux and Napa into it and get some of those fruit characters it has to offer. That was my goal.

Carpenters first Australian cabernet, the 2012 Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard Trueman Cabernet Sauvignon, was released recently.

The addition of a second storey and a bang-up-to-date makeover integrate beautifully with the retained features of this classic mid-20th century brick veneer to deliver a design style in high demand in the housing market. Stepped cornices, picture rails, ornate window pelmets and a wonderful fireplace surround reminiscent of the Art Deco era add considerable charm, while the smart updates have been sympathetically executed to meet todays demand for quality and modernity.

Polished floorboards begin in the entry hall and flow throughout the ground level, including the lounge room on the right where all the period features are on display. The next-door main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and a glam en suite with charcoal

marble-look floor and splashback tiles, a big semi-frameless shower with rainhead, and an on-trend vanity unit. Three other good-sized bedrooms (with robes) are upstairs, off a landing, as is the main bathroom.

Back downstairs, the big family-meals area is a great space, filled with natural light courtesy of a bank of windows framing backyard views, and the kitchen is a modern cracker. Stone benchtops, mosaic-tiled splashback, dual-drawer dishwasher and a 900mm cooker under a canopy rangehood provide all the must-haves for the family chef.

A laundry and powder room complete the snazzy ground level.

If theres anything missing at this

property, its an outdoor entertainment space but the backyard is so big, with so much potential to let imagination take flight, that this can be a plan for the future. Right now, theres a lemon tree (and who doesnt love that?), boxed vegie/herb gardens and swathes of grass for kids to kick around a footy.

A long concrete driveway leads to a double garage where two cars can park nose to tail or one can be garaged while the back section becomes a workshop area.

This must-see property has ducted heating and cooling and solar panels which will help keep dreaded energy bills down. Its in a serene locale, just a chip shot from Medway golf course and within a stones throw of all services.

Melbourne builders Fairhaven Homes know how important it is to get value for money and believe their new house design Newport 361 delivers that.

Part of the Bridgewater Range, the 36-square design is ideal for a large family with its five bedrooms (main with walk-in wardrobe) or the option of four bedrooms each with walk-in robes; a study; zoned lounge and family rooms; a home theatre; upstairs rumpus room; spacious kitchen with optional walk-in pantry; an undercover entertainment area; and double garage.

With a choice of five facades,

Newport 361 includes floor tiles, carpet, tiled shower bases, stone benchtops, stainless-steel cooker/rangehood and a Colorbond roof.

The house is suitable for a 14x28-metre block which nevertheless retains a spacious feel.Contact Fairhaven Homes for their nearest display centre.
