THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR A TAKING TIME FOR PATIENCE 26 APRIL 2020 HOLY NAME OF MARY PARISH HUNTERS HILL ST PETER CHANEL WOOLWICH We acknowledge the Walumatagal people — the first custodians of this place Calendar MARCH Due to the leadership of Federal and State Governments and their advisors, and the excellent cooperation from the population at large, we see Australia in a very promising position as the incidence of new Covid-19 cases continues to dwindle. This brings with it talk of relaxation of the rules around isolation and social dis- tancing. A couple of beaches are now open for exercise and momentum is growing for a resumption of the Rugby League competition before the end of May. Understandably our feet get itchy and we long to be able to return to life as we knew it. We also know now how deadly, clever and fast-moving the coronavirus is and the precautions in place will need to remain for some time yet. We could easily end up back at square one if we don’t continue on the watchful path we’ve been taking so far. Expert medical opinion tells us that the virus itself will always be with us and until we find the vaccine needed to protect us, “normal” life will have to remain on hold to some extent. As we go a bit stir-crazy in our splendid isolation, getting on each other’s nerves having to be in close proximi- ty to each other in our families, longing for a way out of the present situation, we are all in need of great pa- tience. We need to be patient with ourselves as we keep adjusting to the present situation. Our experiences of frustration, perhaps loneliness and the lack of normal social inter-action can have its effect on our mental and emotional health. We certainly need patience with each other in our families along with finding creative ways to continue together while factoring in some legitimate escape mechanisms! Our patience is for our own sakes and is a contribution we make to the whole community. It is a confronting reminder that our lives are inter-connected and that we as individuals and families are not the centre of every- thing. Thankfully in Australia our culture is open to engaging with this and we see the results in the daily de- cline of new Covid-19 cases each day. This can lift our spirits and make us realise the importance of the con- tribution that each of us is able to make. In the US for instance people are not so lucky. The cult of the individual and individual rights is somewhat more entrenched in the social fabric which means that any sacrifice on behalf of the community becomes more difficult to achieve. Fed by right wing ideologues and their shock-jock mouth-pieces we see some States chafing at the bit to be released from pandemic restrictions because they “violate my rights!” The accompany- ing death toll there speaks for itself. Apart from our absurd plundering of toilet paper supplies a few weeks’ ago and some medications, we have generally avoided such self-centred responses and for this we can be very thankful. All growth, healing and peace require a measure of patience. Sometime and often, this entails a degree of suffering. The mystery of the Cross and Resurrection is never far from our door, especially in times such as these. We recall Jesus’ long-suffering patience as he suffered his way to Calvary. The gift of this patient suf- fering serves as nourishment and inspiration for us all right down to our own day. Who knows what a gift to our children and their children we are making as we bravely endure this time of deprivation together? Who knows what growth we ourselves will experience through our readiness to put the common good ahead of our own personal needs? Let’s pray in thanks for each other and for countries around our world as they seek to reclaim good health and safety for their people. May Jesus risen from the dead become a daily focus for us as we draw on our re- serves of long-suffering patience. MARCH

Due to the leadership of Federal and State Governments and their advisors, and the excellent cooperation

from the population at large, we see Australia in a very promising position as the incidence of new Covid-19

cases continues to dwindle. This brings with it talk of relaxation of the rules around isolation and social dis-

tancing. A couple of beaches are now open for exercise and momentum is growing for a resumption of the

Rugby League competition before the end of May. Understandably our feet get itchy and we long to be able to

return to life as we knew it.

We also know now how deadly, clever and fast-moving the coronavirus is and the precautions in place will

need to remain for some time yet. We could easily end up back at square one if we don’t continue on the

watchful path we’ve been taking so far.

Expert medical opinion tells us that the virus itself will always be with us and until we find the vaccine needed

to protect us, “normal” life will have to remain on hold to some extent.

As we go a bit stir-crazy in our splendid isolation, getting on each other’s nerves having to be in close proximi-

ty to each other in our families, longing for a way out of the present situation, we are all in need of great pa-

tience. We need to be patient with ourselves as we keep adjusting to the present situation. Our experiences of

frustration, perhaps loneliness and the lack of normal social inter-action can have its effect on our mental and

emotional health. We certainly need patience with each other in our families along with finding creative ways

to continue together while factoring in some legitimate escape mechanisms!

Our patience is for our own sakes and is a contribution we make to the whole community. It is a confronting

reminder that our lives are inter-connected and that we as individuals and families are not the centre of every-

thing. Thankfully in Australia our culture is open to engaging with this and we see the results in the daily de-

cline of new Covid-19 cases each day. This can lift our spirits and make us realise the importance of the con-

tribution that each of us is able to make.

In the US for instance people are not so lucky. The cult of the individual and individual rights is somewhat

more entrenched in the social fabric which means that any sacrifice on behalf of the community becomes

more difficult to achieve. Fed by right wing ideologues and their shock-jock mouth-pieces we see some States

chafing at the bit to be released from pandemic restrictions because they “violate my rights!” The accompany-

ing death toll there speaks for itself.

Apart from our absurd plundering of toilet paper supplies a few weeks’ ago and some medications, we have

generally avoided such self-centred responses and for this we can be very thankful.

All growth, healing and peace require a measure of patience. Sometime and often, this entails a degree of

suffering. The mystery of the Cross and Resurrection is never far from our door, especially in times such as

these. We recall Jesus’ long-suffering patience as he suffered his way to Calvary. The gift of this patient suf-

fering serves as nourishment and inspiration for us all right down to our own day.

Who knows what a gift to our children and their children we are making as we bravely endure this time of

deprivation together? Who knows what growth we ourselves will experience through our readiness to put the

common good ahead of our own personal needs?

Let’s pray in thanks for each other and for countries around our world as they seek to reclaim good health and

safety for their people. May Jesus risen from the dead become a daily focus for us as we draw on our re-

serves of long-suffering patience. Father Kevin

For many people seeking asylum, JRS is the only safety net they have. Many thanks to all for your

continued generosity.

OUR PARISH PRAYER Loving God,

you are the home for our hearts’ deepest longings. We find our way as families and as individuals only in you, through our brother Jesus,

encouraged by the breath of your Spirit. We thank you for all the blessings we enjoy in our parish family.

May we continue to share our gifts of life and love with glad and generous hearts. May our world be somehow more alive because we have passed this way.

May Mary our parish patron continue to inspire us as we give new birth to your Word in our turn. We make our prayer in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
