It is clear that what we might call enlightened self-interest plays its part in our voting intentions. Special focus is placed on our economic well-being. The ideology of the Political Parties plays its part in our decision-making and of course the personalities of the leaders and their teams. The cult of personality plays its part here as in other life endeavours. After this, other social issues come into focus and some of these have been receiving attention during the current campaign and some of them not. I’ll highlight one of them here for your reflection. THE ENVIRONMENT A UN report released this week notes that: One in four species at risk of extinction On at-risk fauna and flora, the study asserts that human activities “threaten more species now than ever before” – a finding based on the fact that around 25 per cent of species in plant and animal groups are vulnerable. This suggests that around one million species “already face extinction, many within decades, unless action is taken to reduce the intensity of drivers of biodiversity loss”. Without such measures there will be a “further acceleration” in the global rate of species extinction, which is already “at least tens to hundreds of times higher, than it has averaged over the past 10 million years”, the report states. It notes that despite many local efforts, including by indigenous peoples and local communities, by 2016, 559 of the 6,190 domesticated breeds of mammals used for food and agriculture were extinct – around nine per cent of the total - and at least 1,000 more are threatened. Crop security threatened long-term In addition, many crop wild relatives that are needed for long-term food security “lack effective protection”, the report insists, while the status of wild relatives of domesticated mammals and birds “is worsening”. At the same time, reductions in the diversity of cultivated crops, crop wild relatives and domesticated breeds mean that farming will likely be less resilient against future climate change, pests and pathogens. “While more food, energy and materials than ever before are now being supplied to people in most places, this is increasingly at the expense of nature’s ability to provide such contributions in the future,” the report states, before adding that “the biosphere, upon which humanity as a whole depends…is declining faster than at any time in human history”. Pope Francis begins his Encyclical Letter “Laudate Si” as follows: “Laudato si’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. “Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sus- tains and governs us, and who produces vari-ous fruit with coloured flowers and herbs”.1 This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irre-sponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and mas- ters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she “groans in travail” (Rom 8:22). We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we re-ceive life and refreshment from her waters. It might be worth while having these words in focus as we approach the voting booth. Father Kevin

Prince Harry’s words of awe and wonder at the birth of his and Megan’s son this week, echo those of Mary so long ago when she rejoiced in the miracle of life she was carrying.

May we be blessed with gratitude over this weekend as we reflect on the life we received from our own mothers and as we delight in the new life constantly arriving among us through the mothers of today.
