Born in Ixtapan del la Sal, Mexico. Juan immigrated to the United States at the age of 10 with his mother and younger sister.

WASHINGTON, DC - Heading into the 2012 legislative session, lawmakers are proposing to raise taxes on hardworking, low-income Latino families to pay for an extension of the payroll tax cut.

Rather than asking the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share in taxes, legislators are proposing cutting off access to the Child Tax Credit for taxpayers who use Individual Taxpayer Identifi cation Numbers (ITIN).

WASHINGTON, 25 de enero de 2012 - Como parte de los esfuerzos continuos

para cerrar el capítulo sobre alegaciones de discriminación ocurrida en décadas pasadas en el USDA, el Secretario de Agricultura Tom Vilsack anunció hoy mejoras a un proceso anunciado el pasado febrero para resolver los reclamos de agricultores y ganaderos hispanos y de mujeres agricultoras y ganaderas que afirman que fueron discriminados cuando solicitaron préstamos agrícolas del Departamento de Agricultura de Estados

Unidos (“U.S. Department of Agriculture” o USDA, por sus siglas en inglés).

“La Administración de Obama ha dado prioridad a resolver todas las reclamaciones de discriminación pasada en el USDA y estamos comprometidos a cerrar este triste capítulo en la historia del USDA”, dijo Vilsack. “Se les insta a los agricultores y ganaderos hispanos y mujeres agricultoras o ganaderas que consideren fueron víctimas de discriminación pasada que participen en este proceso optimizado de reclamaciones el cual les ofrece la oportunidad de recuperar hasta $250,000 en compensación por daños”.

El actualizado proceso de reclamaciones que se da a

conocer hoy aumenta la cantidad máxima de compensación monetaria a $250,000, en lugar de $50,000.

El proceso le ofrece una alternativa simplificada y agilizada al litigio a cada agricultor o ganadero hispano y mujer agricultora o ganadera que pueda demostrar que el USDA le negó un préstamo o el servicio de préstamo por motivos discriminatorios durante ciertos períodos de tiempo entre 1981 y 2000. Según como se anunció en febrero de 2011, el proceso voluntario de reclamaciones pondrá a disposición al menos $1.33 mil millones de dólares para compensación, más un máximo de $160 millones en condonación de deudas

WASHINGTON, DC - As part of continued efforts to close the chapter on allegations that discrimination occurred at USDA in past decades, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced improvements to a process announced last February to resolve the claims of Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who assert that they were discriminated against when seeking USDA farm loans.

“The Obama Administration has made it a priority to resolve all claims of past discrimination at USDA, and we are committed to closing this sad chapter in USDA’s history,” said Vilsack. “Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who allege past discrimination are encouraged

to participate in an improved claims process in which they have the opportunity to recover up to $250,000 in damages.”

The updated claims process being announced today increases the maximum cash recovery to $250,000, instead of $50,000. The process offers a streamlined alternative to litigation for each Hispanic or woman farmer and rancher who can prove that USDA denied their loan or loan servicing

for discriminatory reasons for certain time periods between 1981 and 2000. As announced in February 2011, the voluntary claims process will make available at least $1.33 billion for cash awards and tax relief payments, plus up to $160 million in farm debt relief, to eligible Hispanic and women

farmers and ranchers. There are no fi ling fees or other costs to claimants to participate in

the program. Participation is voluntary, and the program does not preclude individuals who opt

not to participate from pursuing their cases in court.

This updated process comes

as part of USDA’s efforts to ensure that all its customers have equal access to its programs, and follows the Obama Administration’s settlement of longstanding litigation brought by African American farmers and Native American farmers. Over the past months, USDA has worked to reach out to potential Hispanic and female claimants through a call center for farmers and ranchers, a website, public service

announcements, and in-person meetings around the country. Individuals interested in participating in the claims process may register to receive a claims package, or may obtain more information, by visiting www.farmerclaims.gov . Individuals can also register to receive a claims package by calling the Farmer and Rancher Call Center at 1-888-508-4429.

De Leon, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan, is collecting what has

become the largest assemblage of migrant artifacts in the country. De Leon’s Undocumented Migration Project (UMP) is uncovering the stories behind the thousands of shoes, backpacks, and other

materials discarded in the Sonora dessert and recovered by his team since 2008.

“This is not garbage” he said. “The goal of the project is to rigorously and systematically

collect data on the social phenomenon of border crossing using the lens of anthropology to provide insight into the realities of this process.”

Among the compelling

items in De León’s archive are deteriorated shoes in all sizes, cheap dirty back packs, distended water bottles, and artifacts modified and adapted for hiding and surviving in the dessert. Similar to

typical museum collections, these artifacts are organized in boxes and meticulously numbered. Some of the boxes include the most personal possessions, such as family photos, letters, and prayer cards.

is a fellow second year player with the same blood running through his veins. Aaron Hernandez, 22, tight end for the New England Patriots, is also of Puerto Rican decent (paternal grandparents).

This week at the Patriots’ Super Bowl Media Day session, Hernandez was asked about representing Puerto Rico, along with Cruz, in the NFL.

“I think it’s great for obviously the Puerto Rican community,” Hernandez said. “Obviously there aren’t many

Puerto Ricans in the NFL, but having some in the Super Bowl is also a great deal.”

Hernandez, born in Bristol, Conn., attended Bristol Central High School. Considered the top tight end recruit out of high school by Scout.com, Hernandez enrolled at the University of

Florida where he, along with Tim Tebow, led the Gators to a 2009 BCS Championship. While at UF, Hernandez was nicknamed “Chico” by his college teammates because he was the only Puerto Rican on the team, something he came to embrace.

Sus padres fueron Terri y Dennis Hernández, Aarón perdió a su padre a los 16 años. El brazo de Hernández, desde los hombros hasta los nudillos, cuenta su historia en dibujos y versos puros.

Citas tales como, “Si se trata de ser, depende de mí” y “La diferencia entre lo imposible y lo posible radica en las determinaciones de una persona”, adornan los brazos de Hernández y fueron alguna vez citas favoritas de su padre. Tatuajes dibujados en su brazo derecho, como un sol, representan los días buenos que tuvo con su padre y los ángeles cerca de su muñeca le recuerdan a Hernández que todo termina en el cielo.

Después de un camino espinoso, que incluyó no pasar una prueba de drogas mientras estaba en la UF,

Hernández acudió a sus raíces puertorriqueñas con la esperanza de ser capaz de retribuir a la comunidad latina. Antes de esta temporada, ya que la NFL estaba en el cierre, Hernández encontró el Programa de Formación de Salud Mental Lucero que le calzaba a la perfección.

“Pensé que el participar sería una obra de caridad perfecta para mí”, dijo Hernández en una entrevista con el Boston Herald en abril. “Está orientado a la formación con especialistas en salud mental con la población hispana. Sé que he entrenado con psicólogos profesionales en la universidad cuando yo estaba pasando por tiempos difíciles”, dijo.

El principal objetivo de

Hernández es poder decirles a los niños latinos que está bien cometer errores y aprender de ellos.

“Yo, obviamente, tomé muchas decisiones equivocadas. Pero, he aprendido de ellas”, dijo Hernández. “Es sólo una

cuestión de cómo te recuperas de esos errores”.

Actualmente, Hernández se encuentra a un juego de ganar un Super Bowl. En sólo su segundo año en la NFL y después de haber sido el jugador más joven en cualquier lista de jugadores activos en el 2010, está listo para experimentar todo lo que viene implícito con el Super

Bowl. “Obviamente es un honor. Sueñas con cosas como esta desde que eres un niño”, dijo Hernández. “En realidad nunca te ves a ti mismo en esta posición porque, obviamente, siempre es un sueño, pero estar aquí parece surrealista”.

Born to parents Terri and Dennis Hernandez, Aaron lost his father at the age of 16. Hernandez’s arm, from his shoulders to his knuckles, tell his story in pure drawings and verses.

Quotes such as, “If it is to be, it is up to me” and “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies on a person’s determinations,” decorate Hernandez’s arms and were once favorite quotes of his father. Tattoos pictured on his right arm such as a sun, represent the good days he had with his father and the angels toward his wrist remind Hernandez that it all ends in heaven.

After a rocky path, that included a failed drug test while at UF, Hernandez dug into his Puerto Rican roots in hopes of being able to give back to the Latino community. Prior to this season, as the NFL was on lockout, Hernandez found the Lucero Mental Health Training Program as his perfect fit.

“I thought it would be a perfect charity for me to get

involved with,” said Hernandez in an interview with the Boston Herald back in April. “It’s geared toward training with mental health specialists with the Hispanic population. I know I trained with professional psychologists in college when I was going through hard times,” he said.

Hernandez’s main goal is to be able to tell Latino kids that it’s alright to make a mistake and learn from it. “I obviously made a lot of wrong decisions. But, I learned from them,” Hernandez said. “It’s just a matter of how you bounce back from them.”

Today, Hernandez stands one game away from winning a Super Bowl. In only his second year in the NFL and after being the youngest player on any active roster back in 2010, he is ready to experience all that comes with the Super Bowl. “It’s obviously an honor. You dream of stuff like this since you’re a little kid,” Hernandez said. “You never really actually see yourself in this position because obviously it’s always a dream, but to be here seems surreal.”

W i t h p r o j e c t i o n s of Hispanic p o p u l a t i o n tripling by 2050, it will only be natural to see an increase in Latino players entering the league. On the state of New Jersey’s website, an article that can be read here speaks of the growth of Hispanic players in the NFL.

“There’s a natural draw to

the NFL,” said Peter O’Reilly, NFL’s vice president of fan strategy and marketing. “It’s a bridge to American culture for many Hispanics.” Today’s NFL includes Hispanics from players all the way up to coaches and see’s the league taking initiatives to reach out to Hispanics.

For now, Hernandez and Cruz, along with players such as Mark Sanchez and Tony Gonzalez will continue to pave the road for future Latino players. At least one fact is for certain, Puerto Ricans will be able to celebrate their champion come Sunday, whether it is Aaron Hernandez and his New England Patriots or Victor Cruz and his New York Giants.

With Super Bowl XLV being the most-watched television program ever among Hispanics, an average of 10 million, who has any doubt that this matchup will do the same?

El Congreso debería aprobar un paquete fi scal justo que incluya el acceso al crédito tributario por hijos para las familias vulnerables”.

El ITIN lo utilizan comúnmente los inmigrantes que no tienen un número de Seguridad Social para poder pagar la porción de impuestos correspondiente a su ingreso, Seguro Social

y Medicare. En el 2010, los contribuyentes que utilizaron el ITIN pagaron más de $9 billones en impuestos sobre la nómina en su contribución al Seguro Social y el Medicare.

El día de hoy en una llamada se unieron a Murguía el arzobispo Thomas Wenski de Miami, así como representantes del Centro Nacional de Leyes de Inmigración (NILC), First Focus, y CASA de Maryland, quienes secundaron la oposición a las restricciones al crédito tributario por hijos.

NCLR (National Council of La Raza) estimates that more than four million Latino children and their families could lose out on this valuable tax credit if current proposals pass, pushing them further into poverty.

“We are outraged that this proposal is even on the table,” said Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO. “Latino voters are paying close attention to how policymakers treat our community. Given that one out of every four Latino children would face greater hunger and poverty as a result of this proposal, it is hard to see it as anything less than an attack on our children. Congress should pass a fair tax package that maintains access to the Child Tax Credit for vulnerable families.”

ITINs are commonly used by immigrants who lack a Social Security number so that they can pay their share of income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes. In 2012, ITIN tax fi lers paid more than $9 billion in payroll taxes to support Social Security and Medicare.

Murguía was joined on a call earlier today by Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, as well as representatives from National Immigration Law Center (NILC), First Focus, and CASA de Maryland, who echoed opposition to restrictions to the Child Tax Credit.

“The House proposal is a direct attack on our nation’s children,” said Wendy Cervantes, Vice President of Immigration and Child Rights at First Focus. “Any restriction on the Child Tax Credit would make it more diffi cult for hardworking parents

to provide for their children’s basic needs and threaten to drive child poverty even higher.”

Families affected by this policy change typically earn an average of $21,000 per year. If the law changes, those families would experience an 8 percent increase in taxes, amounting to a loss in income of about $1,800.

At a time of economic uncertainty for working families, the president and Congress have an opportunity to prove that they are committed to fairness and equity by rejecting proposals limiting low-income immigrant taxpayers’ eligibility for the Child Tax Credit,” added Marielena Hincapié, Executive Director of NILC.

Looking at the effects that changing the law could have on the 2012 election, Clarissa Martínez-de-Castro, Director of Immigration

and National Campaigns at NCLR, also pointed out that these proposals have received an overwhelmingly negative response from Latino voters.

“During an election year, when the Latino voting bloc is being courted by both parties, hitting Latinos where it hurts the most—their wallets—doesn’t appear to be a particularly sound strategy for winning over this community,” said Martínez-de-Castro.

In fact, Archbishop Wenski doubted whether any American would back these changes knowing who would be affected.

“Most Americans would not support a tax break knowing it is at the expense of poor children,” said the Archbishop. “Our federal officials should look at other ways to extend this provision.”

As the old saying goes, “You never get a second chance to make a fi rst impression.” For job seekers, truer words were never spoke. Particularly today, when job openings attract applicants like honey does bees, setting yourself apart from the legions of others applying for the same position can prove quite diffi cult.

A greater number of graduates paired with an oversaturated market of individuals looking for new work has only increased the competition. More than ever before, job seekers are fighting

an uphill battle to get themselves noticed, a battle that seemingly grows more demanding with each passing day.

Such a reality only heightens the importance of making a strong fi rst impression, one that will make you stick out in the interviewer’s mind, hopefully earning you a second interview along the way. While nearly everyone is aware that appearance and education go a long way toward making a positive impression, there are several other areas job seekers can address to make themselves stand out from the rest.

PREPARATIONIn addition to knowing all

about yourself, you should know about the job you’re applying for as well. Candidates who enter interviews with little or no knowledge of the open position rarely, if ever, get a second interview, much less a job offer. Don’t be afraid to write down questions that might arise during that research and refer to them throughout the interview. Doing so will show the interviewer you’re genuinely interested in the position and the company, setting you apart from applicants just looking for a job.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

A side effect of the boom in job seekers is that recruiters are expanding their horizons to better whittle the applicant pool. Therefore, preparing for such questions can be a great way to set yourself apart. Think about the job before your interview and what situations might arise that the interviewer could present hypothetically. Strong responses to such questions will certainly make you stand out.

YOUR MANNERISMSThough most job seekers

are smart enough to look the part with a nice suit and haircut, many don’t realize their behavior during the actual interview. Regardless

of how nice your suit is or how good your hair looks, fi dgeting, failing to make eye contact and even taking too many notes while the interviewer is speaking can distract the inter-viewer from you and what you have to say. Even if your insides are racing, appear as

calm and collected as possible on the outside.

When responding to questions, be mindful of how long you’ve been speaking. While you’ll want to avoid “yes” or “no” answers, rambling on will only make you appear nervous and ill-prepared.

“La línea de ayuda de HAF ha sido inundada con llamadas de hispanos con preguntas, confusión y preocupación sobre sus impuestos”, dijo Maite Arce, directora ejecutiva de HAF. “En el pasado, llamadas han incluido temores sobre el estado de inmigración, las situaciones de fraude o situaciones en las cuales la gente ha confiado en preparadores no calificados en preparar impuestos. WASHINGTON, DC - When it comes to taxes, many Hispanics face an uphill battle wrought with barriers such as language, fraud and misinformation. To help address Spanish-speaking

taxpayers’ needs for trustful and credible help, the Hispanic Access Foundation has launched an eight-city outreach and educational campaign in partnership with H&R Block, the world’s largest tax services provider.

The campaign “Preparate Para Un Futuro Mejor” (Prepare Yourself for a Better Future) is designed to emphasize the importance of building an accurate tax history and to give Hispanics tools to protect against fraud and misinformation in the

tax preparation process.“HAF’s helpline has

been flooded with calls from Hispanics with questions, confusion, and concerns about their taxes,” said Maite Arce, executive director of HAF. “Past calls included fears about

immigration status, situations of fraud or that they’ve trusted unskilled tax preparers. It’s evident that there is a critical need for tax preparation education.”

The importance of this education is underscored by the fact that Hispanic buying power is expected to reach $1.5 trillion in 2015, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth, and that several million Hispanics are estimated to have never filed a tax return.

“Hispanics need access to quality information in their language and to bilingual tax experts to build their understanding about taxes,” said Arce. “With over 2,100 bilingual offices nationwide, H&R Block is an ideal partner to help this population.”

Throughout the campaign, HAF and H&R Block will work

with faith-based and community leaders in select communities to discuss tax topics, participate in community events and promote informational tax seminars called “Tax Talks.”

¿Qué es el Domingo de Metas Universitarias (College Goal Sunday)?El Domingo de Metas Universitarias es un evento de un día dedicado a ayudar a los estudiantes y sus familias a completar la Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes, con el objetivo de ayudar a todo aquel que desea obtener una educación más allá de la secundaria. La Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes es también conocida como FAFSA.

¿Por qué debes asistir?Si estas pensando en la posibilidad de obtener una educación universitaria, probablemente necesitarás ayuda financiera. El Domingo de Metas Universitarias es el evento perfecto para recibir asistencia acerca de como llenar la solicitud FAFSA.
