(UCA) campus is set to host the first ever Latino Soccer Championship, Saturday, October 8th and Sunday October 9th at 10

a.m. The tournament will be held at the UCA soccer fi eld located at the corner of Donaghey Ave. and Dave Ward Dr. in Conway,

El torneo se llevará a cabo en el campo de futbol de la UCA ubicado en la esquina de Donaghey Ave. Dave Ward Dr. en Conway, Arkansas.

Equipos masculinos y femeninos de fútbol de todo el estado estarán representados en el torneo. Equipos de Hot Springs, Russellville, Springdale, Rogers, Benton, Conway y Little Rock, se han inscrito para ostentar el derecho de jactarse de ser el mejor equipo de fútbol latino en el estado, así como obtener los $1,000 del primer premio.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – La decisión de la jueza Sharon Lovelace Blackburn de denegar el bloqueo temporal de la ley HB56 de Alabama mientras se dilucidan las apelaciones del Departamento de Justicia y de

grupos de derechos civiles es para las familias inmigrantes de este estado como llover sobre mojado.

Padres indocumentados con sus niños a cuestas abarrotaron anoche un salón de la Escuela Primaria Tarrant para orientarse sobre sus derechos y qué hacer en caso de ser detenidos por las autoridades. “¿Me sirve de algo traer mi pasaporte?”, preguntó un padre de familia. “¿Debo tener la carta de poder notarial conmigo si me detienen?”, preguntó otra señora a la

encargada de ofrecer el taller de orientación, el primero que condujeron en esta escuela. “¿Qué pasará con mis hijos si me detienen?”, preguntó otra madre.

La angustia era evidente entre padres y maestros, estos últimos indignados de “que se persigan seres humanos que sólo están buscando una vida mejor para sus hijos”.

Un joven matrimonio de Ensenada, Baja California, escuchó atento la orientación. Llevan siete años en Alabama.

Tienen tres hijos, pero sólo el menor es ciudadano estadounidense. El mayor, de 12 años, siempre ha estado en el cuadro de honor de la escuela, pero ahora los sueños de que sus hijos puedan educarse y convertirse en profesionales están en la cuerda floja. Los padres ni siquiera permitieron que su hijo mayor fuera a una gira al museo del Espacio en Huntsville que se ganó por sus buenas califi caciones por miedo a que fuera detenido.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - For Alabama’s immigrant families, yesterday’s refusal by federal judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn to issue a temporary stay to state law HB 56 is like salt in the wound.

Last night, undocumented

parents, carrying their children, packed a Tarrant Elementary classroom for a “Know Your Rights” workshop on what to do if detained by the authorities, the fi rst of its kind at this school. “Will it help if I carry my passport?” one father asked. “Should I have my notarized letter on me if they detain me?” a mother asked the workshop leader.

The anguish was evident among not only parents but teachers, who were indignant about “the persecution of these human beings who are just looking for a better life for their kids.”

One young couple from Ensenada, Baja California, listened attentively to the workshop. They’ve lived in Alabama for seven years. They have three children, but only the youngest is a native-born U.S. citizen. The oldest, 12 years old, has always made the honor roll at school, but now the family’s dream—that their children will receive an education and become professionals—is hanging by a thread. The parents didn’t even let their oldest son go on a fi eld trip to the Space Museum in Huntsville—a trip he earned thanks to his good academic record—out of fear that he would be detained.

“We were confi dent that the

judge would react less severely, that she would temporarily stay the law while they hear the appeal, but they broke the news to us that she didn’t,” the young father said with tears in his eyes. “We don’t have much time to think it over…maybe we can get our affairs in order here in two or three weeks and see what our options are, maybe moving to another state or straight to Mexico,” he added.

He’s taking precautionary measures: “I go alone to work and my wife stays at home, in case something comes up,” he said, referring to the possibility of being detained and deported.

Another young mother from Michoacán has a daughter who was born here, who was supposed to start school next year. She’s afraid that when the family goes to enroll her, school offi cials will identify her and her husband as undocumented.

“I’m terrifi ed…if they were to detain me, I don’t know how long they’d be able to keep me in detention here, I don’t know if they’d take my children from me…we’re not all bad people, we’re not all criminals,” she said.

The godmother of her child, also from Michoacán, has lived in Alabama for four years. Her two daughters were born here.

“Teníamos fe en alguna reacción menos severa de la jueza que parara temporalmente la ley mientras se arregla la apelación, pero nos dieron la noticia de que no”, indicó el joven padre con lágrimas en los ojos. “No hay que pensar mucho...Tal vez solucionar lo que tenemos aquí en dos o tres

semanas y ver qué posibilidades tenemos de tal vez (mudarnos) a otro estado o directamente a México”, agregó.

Está tomando algunas medidas precautorias: “Sólo yo estoy yendo a trabajar y mi esposa se queda en casa por cualquier problema que haya”, dice refiriéndose a la posibilidad de ser detenido y deportado.

Otra joven madre de Michoacán tiene una niña nacida aquí que ingresaría a la escuela el año entrante y teme que al matricularla suponga que la identifi quen a ella y a su esposo como indocumentados.

“Estoy asustada. Si me detuvieran, no sé cuánto tiempo me pueden tener aquí detenida, no sé si me pueden quitar a mis hijos....No todos somos malos,

no todos somos criminales”, indicó.

Su comadre, también de Michoacán, tiene cuatro años viviendo en Alabama. Tiene dos niñas nacidas aquí.

“Nos ha pasado por la mente cambiarnos de estado, pero va a ser lo mismo que aquí porque si aquí lo permitieron, en otros estados lo van a permitir”, indicó.

Pero volver a México, dijo, no es alternativa “porque la delincuencia nos da mucho miedo”.

Seguirán, por el momento en Alabama. “Con miedo salimos de la casa, nos persignamos y a ver si regresamos juntos otra vez”, señaló.

“Es muy difícil. Queríamos hacer otra vida pero no nos

dejan. Si no se puede parar (la ley) tendremos que irnos, pero qué feo porque por los latinos, por los hispanos, Estados Unidos también es algo. Esperemos que se toquen el corazón y nos dejen estar aquí más que nada por nuestros hijos, que son de aquí. Queremos otro futuro para nuestros hijos y no la delincuencia de México”, concluyó.

But returning to Mexico, she continued, isn’t an alternative, “because the crime scares us too

much.”For the moment, they’ll stay

in Alabama. “Every time we leave the house in fear, we cross ourselves, and we see if we come

back home again,” she said.“It’s very hard. We wanted to

make another life for ourselves, but we’re not allowed. If they can’t stop it (the law) we’ll

have to leave, but how horrible would that be? Because Latinos, Hispanics, we’ve also contributed to this country. We hope that their hearts will be turned and they’ll

let us stay here, at very least for our children, who were born here. We want a better future for our children, not a life of crime in Mexico,” she concluded.

again the setting for the final event of the Little Rock Regional Chamber’s 29th Annual Minority Enterprise Development Week, as

the college presented and hosted the Little Rock Regional Minority Business Awards Luncheon.

The event was held on

Monday, September 19th. Chamber Board Member Myron Jackson, whose company The Design Group again presented

MED Week, served as master of ceremonies for the lunch and presented awards to the following:

have registered to claim bragging rights as the best Latino soccer team in the state, as well

to claim the $1,000 fi rst place prize money.

This statewide event was created to bring the Hispanic community to the UCA campus

so that attending the 100-year-old university becomes a viable option for Hispanic youth. More than 11,000 students from 66 different countries and 39 states

are currently represented in UCA’s student body. Mexico, Honduras, San Salvador, Costa Rica, and Columbia, all have compatriots attending UCA.

“Family life is very important to Hispanics, but so is higher education,” said Jose “Don Pepe” Vicente, president of the Mex-Ark soccer league. “UCA is uniquely situated in the middle of the state so that anyone living in Arkansas can go home on any given weekend.”

Other family activities are planned for the festivities including a bouncy house, face painting and children’s games.

UCA’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), in partnership with the National Guard, will provide a rock climbing wall for older children.

Authentic, Hispanic food like traditional tacos de chicharon, lengua, and carne asada, will be sold at the event, along with aqua fresca and tropical fruit cups.

The UCA Office of Admissions will also be conducting tours of the campus for those interested in applying for university admission.

“This tournament is great for

our community because UCA is showing that it cares about the future of Latinos by providing an opportunity for a college education,” said Cesar Aguilar, director of the Northwest Arkansas soccer league.

“Tu hijo pertenece aqui,” the new UCA campaign says it all. Latinos are welcome at the University of Central Arkansas.

This is a soccer tournament and fi esta rolled into one. Come out for a day of exciting soccer play and a day of family fun.

Auténtica comida hispana como los tradicionales tacos de chicharon, lengua, y carne asada, se venderán en el evento, junto con agua fresca y bebidas de frutas tropicales.

La Ofi cina de Admisiones de la UCA también realizará visitas guiadas al campus para todos aquellos interesados en postular a la universidad.

“Este torneo es muy bueno

para nuestra comunidad, porque la UCA está demostrando que se preocupa por el futuro de los latinos al brindarles una oportunidad para una educación universitaria”, dijo César Aguilar, director de la liga de fútbol del Noroeste de Arkansas.

“Tu hijo pertenece aquí”, la nueva campaña de la UCA lo dice todo. Los latinos son bienvenidos en la Universidad Central de Arkansas.
