TEPEAPULCO, MEXI-CO - Es un domingo tí-pico en el municipio de Tepeapulco, en el altiplano central de México. Las fa-milias se reúnen, cocinan y se ponen al día.

Y esa es la escena en la casa de Santiago Do-mínguez. A los 82 años de edad, es el patriarca de la familia. Lleva pantalones planchados, con su pelo oscuro alisado. A la hora del almuerzo, está rodeado por familiares.

Pero una persona siem-pre falta: su hija, Rosa. En la sala, hay una foto de ella como una mujer joven.

“Pensé que sólo estaría fuera tres o cuatro años, y luego volvería”, dijo Do-mínguez.

Pero han pasado 18 años desde que Rosa se fue a Arizona con sus dos hijos pequeños. Fueron ile-galmente a reunirse con el padre de los niños allí. Ella ahora tiene 43 años y nunca ha regresado a México. Sin papeles, es demasiado arriesgado.

“Llegó un punto en que le dije, ‘Sabes, no es-toy seguro si volveremos a vernos’”, dijo Domínguez.

Pero ahora puede que sí.

Un proyecto de ley propuesto del Senado per-mitiría que millones de inmigrantes que entraron ilegalmente a los EE.UU. soliciten la condición pro-visional y la oportunidad de trabajar legalmente y viajar al extranjero.

TEPEAPULCO, MEXICO - It’s a typical Sunday in the town of Tepeapulco, in Mexico’s central highlands. Families gather, cook and catch up.

And that’s the scene at

Santiago Domínguez’s home. At 82-years-old, he’s the fam-ily patriarch. He’s wearing pressed slacks, his dark hair smoothed back. By lunchtime, he’s surrounded by relatives.

But one person’s always missing: Rosa, Domínguez’s daughter. In the living room, there’s a picture of her as a

young woman.“I thought she’d only be

gone three or four years, and then come back,” Domínguez said in Spanish.

But it’s been 18 years since Rosa left for Arizona with her two young sons. They went illegally to join the boys’ father there. She’s now

43 and has never returned to Mexico. Without papers, it’s just too risky.

“It got to the point that I told her, ‘You know, I’m not sure if we’ll see each other again,’” Domínguez said.

But now they might.A proposed Senate bill

would allow millions of im-

migrants who entered the US illegally to apply for provi-sional status and the chance to work legally and travel internationally.

“There’s hope like never before,” Domínguez said.

And it’s a feeling felt throughout Mexico.

WASHINGTON, DC - President Barak Obama and the Vice President Joe Biden met in the Oval Office with young immigrants who re-ceived deferred action and with the siblings and spouses of undocumented immigrants. This meeting was an impor-tant opportunity for the Presi-dent and the Vice President to meet with families who are directly affected by our nation’s broken immigration system.

The Dreamers shared how their lives have been

positively affected by the deferred action process and emphasized that they and their families need a perma-nent solution that will allow them to fully contribute to the country they call home.

At the meeting, Presi-dent Obama reiterated his commitment to passing a bipartisan, commonsense immigration reform bill this year. He made clear that while the current bill is not perfect, it does represent an important step towards the broad principles that need to be part of any immigration reform package.

The President under-scored that their stories are a good reminder that immigra-tion isn’t just a policy issue, but it’s about our families, our communities and it’s about our common future. The President and the Vice President thanked partici-pants for their leadership, courage and on-going efforts to move immigration reform legislation forward. The President also encouraged them to continue to share their stories with the Ameri-can public to move the hearts and minds of individual lead-ers and to propel the immi-

gration debate forward. Participants are visiting

Washington to speak to their elected representatives as the Senate considers immigration reform legislation.

Kevin Lee is a South Ko-rean immigrant who received deferred action. He currently resides in Los Angeles, Cali-fornia. Both of his parents are

undocumented.Mehdi Mahraoui came to

the United States from Mo-rocco when he was 7 years old. He is a legal permanent resident and lives in New York, New York. His parents and his older sister remain undocumented.

Melissa McGuire-Ma-niau’s husband is an undocu-mented immigrant from Mex-ico. Melissa is a U.S. veteran; she and her husband reside in Winter Park, Florida.

Justino Mora received deferred action; he currently resides in Los Angeles, Cali-fornia.

ARKADELPHIA, AR - ARMOM is an annual two-day free dental clinic sponsored by the Arkansas State Dental Association for underserved Arkansans. ARMOM provides free dental care for the relief of pain to underserved Arkan-sans, many of whom are from working families who do not have access or cannot afford dental insurance.

Since ARMOM was start-ed in 2007, over 8,084 patients have been seen in only ten total clinic days. The number of procedures performed has been phenomenal: 15,967 extractions of bad teeth, and 7,738 fillings and other res-torations. These donated pro-cedures were worth and es-timated $4 million. Many of these patients might otherwise have no hope of receiving care.

The next ARMOM will

be held on May 31 and June 1, 2013 at Henderson State University, Wells Center, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Doors open at 6:00a.m.

This is completely free dental clinic thanks to the generosity of volunteers and sponsors. No eligibility or income requirements. No appointments – First come, first served. Services includes: cleaning, filings and extrac-tions. Open to children and adults.

Is there anything that would disqualify me from treatment? Each patient will undergo a simple medi-cal exam at the start of your ArMOM experience. Some things that could prevent you from being treated include: having a fever at the time of treatment, uncontrollable,

abnormally high blood pres-sure, or excessive bleeding in the past.

If I am under 18, do I need a parent or guardian present? Yes. All children must be accompanied by a le-gal guardian until all treatment is complete. If guardian needs treatment for themselves, there must be an additional adult present with his/her children while the guardian is being treated. The guardian cannot

be treated for same day as their children unless there is another adult to watch the children.

My entire family needs to be seen. Is that possible? Yes, however, a guardian must be with children under the age of 18 at all times.

Will there be transla-tors? Spanish translator will be available.

What should I bring to ArMOM? You should bring a list of your current medi-cations, baby supplies for a full day and possibly book/magazines for while you are waiting. Bring these items with you in line; do not leave them in your car. If you are inside the building and choose to go back outside for any reason, you forfeit your turn in line! Be prepared.

El 14 de junio se celebra el 236o aniversario de la bandera de los EE.UU. En 1777, el Congreso Continental adoptó el modelo de las Estrellas y las rayas como la bandera nacional, casi un año después de la Declaración de la Independencia fue firmada. Aunque el cuatro de julio se celebra tradicionalmente como el nacimiento de América, a partir de la década de 1880, muchas escuelas y grupos de ciudadanos abogaron por la adopción de una fiesta nacional para conmemorar la bandera de los EE.UU. Inspirado por más de treinta años de celebraciones locales y estatales, el presidente Woodrow Wilson estableció oficialmente el Día de la Bandera en 1916. No fue sino hasta 1949, sin embargo, que el presidente Harry Truman firmó una ley del Congreso con la designación del 14 de junio como el Día de la Bandera Nacional. A limited number of advance tickets for Riverfest

2013 are now on sale on a first-come, first-serve basis at Walgreens stores through-out Arkansas. Discounted tickets are $17.50 for three days’ admission half the cost of the $35 gate admission – while supplies last. Wal-greens charges a processing fee on all tickets sold at their locations. The half-price ticket will be exchanged at any gateway for an IBERIA-BANK wristband that can be used for admission into all three days of the festival. The wristband must be worn for the entire three days of the event for re-admittance. Chil-dren 6 and younger are free.

Quantities are limited for advance tickets, so the public is encouraged to act fast. Three-day passes sold at the gate will be $35. Tickets are now on sale online at www.riverfestarkansas.com for $30.

Shuttle service to Riv-erfest from both Little Rock and North Little Rock loca-tions will again be available this year. A $3 round-trip shuttle ride (or $2 with a non-perishable food item) will take festivalgoers to Riverfest from the east side of War Memorial Stadium at Markham and Van Buren streets and the north parking lot of North Little Rock High’s West Campus at 22nd and Main streets. The Riverfest shuttles drop riders within feet of the main gates and run continuously through-out the festival and for at least an hour after the festival closes. This is the safest and most convenient way to travel to the festival.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Riverfest Recycles

program will encourage fes-tivalgoers to keep recyclable plastic bottles and aluminum cans out of landfills by col-lecting them from the festival grounds.

The Arkansas Demo-crat-Gazette Family Zone offers free entertainment on the grounds of the Clinton Presidential Center and Heifer International. Activities and entertainment in the Family Zone include the Family Stage with Jesse White Tumblers and Kenya Safari Acrobats, the Super Retriever Crown Championship Series, the Weenie Dog Derby, the K-9 Friz-B-Crew, the International Village craft area and other interactive activities.

Representatives will be available from the vineyards and breweries to discuss and educate attendees on their products. La hermana de Cervera salió de México con sus hijos jóvenes hace unos 10 años. Cruzaron a Arizona ilegalmente, trabajaron en los campos, y ahora viven cerca de Phoenix.

“Se han llevado la puerta, las ventanas”, dijo Cervera mientras se para-ba frente a la casa de su

hermana.Desde que su hermana

A few towns over, Cata-lina Cervera knocks on a neighbor’s gate to visit the house next door—the one her younger sister, Sandra, abandoned.

Cervera’s sister left Mex-ico with her young children about 10 years ago. They crossed into Arizona illegally, picked produce, and now live near Phoenix.

“They’ve taken the door, the windows,” Cervera said in

Spanish as she stood in front of her sister’s house.

Since her sister’s been gone, thieves have stripped her house clean, even the roof. It’s a cinder block skel-eton.

Cervera said she and her sister feel impotencia, pow-erlessness—they want to see each other, but can’t.

Her sister couldn’t visit when their mother was dying. And a few years ago, Cervera couldn’t get a tourist visa to see her sister in Arizona.

Cervera said she lacked what’s needed for a US visa: things like a bank account, a business, or a credit card. But now she can envision her sister—and her sister’s kids—visiting Mexico again.

“They are motivated with the dream that this immi-gration reform is going to happen,” Cervera said of her relatives in Arizona.

But as Congress debates the legislation, the wait con-tinues.

Back in Tepeapulco,

Domínguez’s tradition is to sing to his daughter a famous ballad over the phone. It’s called “Sin Ti” or Without You.

“What else matters if being far from you makes me cry,” he sang.

Over a 1,000 miles away, in Arizona, his daughter Rosa has become an activist for immigration reform. She asks to only use her first name because of her unauthorized status.

“I want this to happen

now, because our parents’ lives won’t wait,” Rosa said in Spanish.

And if reform does happen and she can travel to Mexico freely one day?

She said she’ll surprise her dad with a mariachi band. And they’ll play that ballad he’s sung to her for the last 18 years.

A través del servicio text4baby, ADH trata de abordar este tema en colaboración con las Her-manas Unidas, un programa de trabajo para reducir la mortalidad infantil en el estado. series of health-care bills will bring health insurance to 250,000 working

Arkansans while reforming our current Medicaid sys-tem. While this legislative effort was historic, it was not unprecedented.

In 1997, another bi-partisan effort created the ARKids First program. The program was designed for families with household in-comes too high to qualify for existing Medicaid programs, but too low to afford private insurance coverage.

Recently, we learned that Arkansas now ranks fourth nationally in provid-ing coverage to children.

Today, 94 percent of Ar-kansas children have health insurance.

Insurance coverage makes a huge difference in the health of a child. When kids get the care they need when they need it, their health is more likely to

stabilize and to improve. Children who avoid poor health at a young age stand a better chance of maintain-ing a lifetime of mental and physical well-being.

ARKids Fi rs t ben-efits all Arkansans, even those who aren’t parents or children who use it. The program helps slow the growth of health-care costs, costs that all Arkansans pay. When children have no in-surance, their parents often cannot afford to take them to the doctor until their health deteriorates. As an illness worsens, care becomes more expensive, and costs spiral higher. Often, those costs are passed along to other Arkansans who do carry insurance when parents are unable to pay for that care out-of-pocket.

These are many of the

same arguments made in recent months for the Arkan-sas Private Option, and we hope to see similar improve-ments in health outcomes for working adults.

Nearly 93 percent of children eligible for ARKids are now enrolled, but there are still 46,000 kids in our State who are uninsured. Estimates show that an-other 10,000 can be newly covered through the private option.

Or if you are planning a trip this summer, let your teen set a budget, calculate fuel needs or figure the distance between destinations.

30 minutes a daySet aside 30 minutes a day for reading, math worksheets, crossword puzzles or brain teasers. Doing these activities as a family makes learning fun.
