FAYETTEVILLE, AR – Sigma Iota Alpha, formally known as Hermandad De Sigma Iota Alpha Incorparda, is the first Latina sorority recognized by the offi ce of Greek Life at the University of Arkansas. The first seven members were initiated in December.

“We started researching our options and discovered Sigma Iota Alpha,” said president

Jessica Galan of Salvadorian descent and a fi rst generation

college student. “As Latinas, we wanted to be a formal part of Greek Life and work closer with the Latino community through volunteering. We also wanted to promote advancement

in education for the Latino community, and

we were fortunate to fi nd a sorority with similar national goals.”

Act. Discussion themes addressed

at the Summit an analysis of the DREAM movement in Arkansas, prospects for the introduction of

state DREAM Act in 2013, and opportunities for regional and state awareness-building. A full agenda entailed strategic planning sessions, regional action plan

development for 2012 and 2013, visibility events in Little Rock tied to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, and Hispanics and Latino voter engagement training.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - LANTERNS!, Arkansas’ only deep-winter outdoor festival, is returning to Little Rock for a fourth year of family fun and illuminating entertainment. From the China to the Moon, LANTERNS!, is a magical evening designed to delight children and adults alike.

This year the festival will be held Thursday through Saturday, February 2 - 4, 2012, from 6 pm to 10 pm, at Wildwood Park for the Arts, 20919 Denny Road, in west Little Rock. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 – 12 and free for children ages 5 & younger. New this year is a free shuttle from the parking lot at Kroger, located at Chenal Parkway and its eastern Kanis intersection.

A wide selection of international foods and beverages are available for purchase, with prices from $2 - $8. Patrons can exchange cash or credit card for Wild Bucks, the Park’s currency utilized for food and luminary purchases.

At Wildwood, visitors will take a mystical stroll along paved pathways lit by fire pits and luminaries into the park’s winter woodlands to enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor entertainment at lighted vistas representing eight cultural vistas around the globe: China, Paris, India, Shakespeare’s England, Venice, India, Americana with a baseball theme, and Shakespeare’s England.

LANTERNS! celebrates the first full moon of the lunar year. Honoring the Chinese Year of the Dragon. China offers vegetarian fare, hot tea and sake.

Inside Wildwood’s 625-seat performing arts complex, the lobbies and stage will be transformed into a Parisian street market filled with the aromas of crepes, as well as antiques vendors, a French fortune teller, and nightly performances by Ballet Arkansas and The Muses. Wildwood’s lakeside performance pad will transport festival-goers to the carnival atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro, guests will have the opportunity to purchase foods and beverages

created by Little Rock’s Café Bossa Nova and Rosalia’s Family Bakery, including caldo de feijao (traditional bean soup) with yucca root puffs, and caipirinhas, a popular Brazilian drink, and plan to dance the night away to the rhythmic Brazilian sounds of a five-piece bossa nova band led by Susana Menda.

Further east in Wildwood’s Butler Arboretum, the young and young-at-heart can pitch baseballs for prizes. Little Rock’s famous Hot Dog Mike will create selections reminiscent of America’s favorite past-time.

DES MOINES, IO - The consolidation between Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma is complete, creating a regional affi liate across four states. The combined organizations are now operating under the name

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

“Working together as one affi liate, we can increase access to quality reproductive health care services across the four-state region,” said Planned Parenthood of the Heartland President and CEO Jill June.

The consolidation will provide expanded services for all states, including pediatric care, male cancer screenings, HPV vaccinations, prenatal care, age-appropriate education programming and more.

“We can provide more services to the women, men and families who rely on us for care, at a cost everyone can afford,” June added.

June will continue in her role as president and CEO for the consolidated Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

The organization will operate a total of 34 health centers and three Education Resource Centers throughout Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma.

Heartland has served women and men of all ages in the Heartland since the 1930s. Today the agency offers a full range of quality reproductive health care services to residents in Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma and Arkansas through 34 health centers and three Education and Resource Centers.

Un programa completo lleno de sesiones de planificación estratégica, un plan de acción de desarrollo

para el 2012 y 2013, y varios actos en Little Rock ligadaos a la celebracion del Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. y entrenamientos en la formación de los votantes latinos.

Mireya Reith, Directora Ejecutiva de Arkansas United Community Coalition y organizadora del evento saludó al grupo diciendo: “Gracias por unirse a nosotros en la primera

cumber del DREAM Act del estado de Arkansas y la por su decisión de celebrar el Día del Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., en demostración de su compromiso con la educación

At lunch, attendees participated on a State leaders panel discussion titled “Where Are We Going?” Panelist included State Senator Joyce Elliott, State Representative Greg Leding, Dr. Joel Anderson, Chancellor, University of Arkansas Little Rock and Reverend Stephen Copley, Arkansas Interfaith

Alliance. The Panelist braze the crowd with statements of the importance to elevate all Arkansas to college education status.

The Arkansas DREAM Act State Summit Organizing Partners included, Arkansas Coalition for the DREAM (AC4D), Arkansas United Community Coalition

(AUCC), Arkansas Public Policy Panel (APPP), Arkansas Interfaith Alliance, Arkansas Natural DREAMers, the Office of the Chancellor, University of

Arkansas and Just Communities of Arkansas.

At least 65,000 undocumented immigrant youth graduate from high schools every year, and many of them struggle to attend institutes of higher education and volunteer to the military.

The DREAM Act will grant youth who traveled to the United States before the age of 16 a path to citizenship contingent on continuous presence in the country, good behavior, and the attainment of at least a two-year university degree or a two-

year commitment to the armed forces.

Most of the students have lived in the United States from a young age and consider themselves Americans. They are attending “classes” at what organizers have dubbed the “Dream University,” meeting with legislators, and, in a notable

shift from previous years, giving out their full names and personal histories.

The DREAM Act is the critical first increment in a longer process of immigration reform. According to recent surveys by First Focus, 70% of the American public supports the DREAM Act.

Consejo Nacional Panhelénica incluye ocho hermandades, y el Consejo Nacional Pan-Helénico cuenta con nueve fraternidades y hermandades afroamericanas históricas.

Several students first approached the director of Greek Life, Parice Bowser, in 2010, and by summer of 2011, the process was moving along. Representatives from the national organization visited campus in September 2011. The new member program took place during the fall semester, culminating with the Dec. 4 initiation.

“I am excited that Sigma Iota Alpha accepted our invitation to establish a colony at Arkansas, and I look forward to beginning the work of creating a successful chapter,” said Bowser.

Sigma Iota Alpha joins a Greek system rich in service and success at the University of Arkansas. During the 2010-11 academic year, Greek

organizations donated more than $530,000 to charities and performed more than 22,000 hours of community service. The current Greek community makes up 22 percent of the total student body.

“I feel like our group brings more diversity opportunities to students on campus,” said Galan. “There are clubs and other groups students can join, but the sorority is going to focus more on the cultural side and try to go beyond getting students to attend our programs. We want all students, not just Latinos, to approach us and ask us questions.”

Sigma Iota Alpha joins Phi Iota Alpha, the only Latino fraternity on campus, on the Multicultural Greek Council. The Interfraternity Council includes 12 fraternities; the National Panhellenic Council

includes eight sororities; and the National Pan-hellenic Council includes nine historically black fraternities and sororities.

Arkansas ranked sixth last year and 10th the previous two years in Education Week’s annual calculations. The analysis ranks states on six education policy and performance categories.

“We’re very pleased about the latest sign of Arkansas’s advancement in education,” said Arkansas Education

Commissioner Dr. Tom Kimbrell. “To be ranked fifth in the nation indicates that good things are happening in Arkansas schools. Educators and policy makers across the country are taking notice. These are our kids. We take very seriously our responsibility to serve each and every child in Arkansas.”

Overall, Arkansas scored 81.6, which placed it behind only Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia.

Of particular note, Arkansas tied for first with Maryland in the “Transitions and Alignment” category.

Arkansas placed second in the “Teaching Profession” category. It placed sixth in the “Standards, Assessment and Accountability” category. Other categories scored were “School Finance,” “K-12 Achievement,” and “Chance for Success.”

The analysis was compiled by the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center. It surveyed the country’s chief state school officers on a wide range of programs and policy and then independently evaluated the responses.

Volunteer certified tax assistance experts from the IRS VITA/TCE will help people complete and file tax returns at no cost to taxpayers. Taxpayers wishing to participate will need to bring a photo ID; Social Security cards for self, spouse, and dependents; copies of all W2s, 1099s, etc; a copy of a check for direct deposit; and spouse

(if filing a joint return.) Spanish language interpreters will be on hand.

In addition, a tailgate party will be set up featuring additional free services and information on Individual Development Accounts, bank and credit union accounts, homebuyer programs, Medicaid, food stamps, and others.

Crédito Tributario Por Ingreso del Trabajo (EITC) para empleados c a l i f i c a d o s y todos los individuos y familias de t r a b a j a d o r e s elegibles el Sábado, 4 de febrero 2012 de

9a.m. a 3p.m. en el Centro de Workforce en Little

Rock situado en la 5401 South University Ave.

El Crédito Tributario Por Ingreso del Trabajo es un impulso financiero. Millones

de trabajadores podrían calificar por primera vez este año, debido a los cambios en su estado civil, de paternidad y financiero.

El IRS exhorta a todas las personas que ganan $49,000 o menos en salarios, trabajo por cuenta propia o de la agricultura en el 2011 para ver si califican.

Se estima devolver un total de $40 millones a los contribuyentes de Little Rock, con todo y esto, un cuarto de esos elegibles no se aprovechan. Los trabajadores de bajos ingresos de renta pueden reclamar créditos sobre sus impuestos sobre la renta
