La sequedad del verano es un buen momento

para escribir sobre la oración. Recientemente,

una madre me contó la siguiente historia

sobre cómo Dios escuchó sus oraciones. Ella estaba pasando

por momentos muy di ciles con su hija de 16 años. La chica

era belicosa, no hablaba, y se había fugado varias veces. La

madre estaba fuera de sí. No sabía qué hacer. Se desahogó

con Dios pidiéndole que de alguna manera tuvieran empo

para resolver sus diferencias y encontrar una relación de

madre e hija que sanara su corazón destrozado.

Dos días después, la hija sufrió ruptura de la apéndice y fue

llevada de urgencia al hospital. La chica estuvo en el hospital

por tres días y luego estuvo en recuperación por una semana

en casa. La madre estuvo siempre a su lado, cuidando de ella

hasta que recuperara su salud. En el proceso de recuperación,

tuvieron empo suficiente para hablar y resolver sus diferen-

cias. Hoy la relación progresa favorablemente. Como dijo la

madre, "Dios escuchó mis oraciones, pero ciertamente no

de la manera que yo esperaba". En esta historia, vemos en

acción cuatro fundamentos de la oración.

1) A menudo la oración surge en momentos de desespera-

ción, después que todo lo demás ha fracasado. Sólo en

estos momentos, algunos de nosotros ponemos nuestras

vidas en las manos de dios.

2) La oración necesita ser honesta. No podemos engañar a

Dios de ninguna manera, él ya lo sabe. La madre le habló

al Señor con toda sinceridad. Le habló de la situación, su

dolor, su ira, su sen miento de fracaso, y su desespera-

ción. Al orar, necesitamos confiar que Dios conoce nues-

tra pena y ve nuestras vidas completamente. La oración

es cues ón de abrirle nuestros corazones a Dios para que

pueda llenarnos del Espíritu Santo. Si sen mos algo, digá-

mosle a Dios; si queremos o necesitamos algo, pidámoslo.

3) La oración no es para hacer que Dios cambie de opinión.

El propósito de la oración no es convencer a Dios para

que haga las cosas a nuestra manera. Demasiadas veces

nos dirigimos a Dios como si Dios hubiese come do un

error terrible y necesita corregirlo. Lo que es peor, actua-

mos como si hubiera una fórmula secreta de oración que

podemos seguir y que obligará a Dios a hacer lo que

nosotros queremos. No, Dios quiere nuestro bien y nos

ama incondicionalmente. Sólo necesitamos pedir que se

haga su voluntad.

4) La oración es un diálogo, hablar y escuchar. Después que

hemos compar do con Dios todo lo que somos, necesita-

mos escuchar. La respuesta de Dios podría no ser exacta-

mente lo que esperamos. Dios escucha nuestras oraciones

pero Dios es a menudo el Dios de las sorpresas. Con nues-

tro corazón oyente podemos reconocer la acción de Dios

cuando ésta ocurre.

Si sientes que tu vida de oración está seca o empolvada, trata

de decírselo a Dios. ¡Chispas! Eso es una oración, ¿o no?  

¡Vayan y glorifiquen al Señor con sus vidas!

  The dryness of summer is a good time to write

about prayer. One mother recently told me

the following story on how God answered her

prayers. She was having a very difficult time

with her 16-year-old daughter. The girl was

belligerent, wouldn’t talk and had run away several mes.

The mother was beside herself. She didn’t know what to do.

She poured out her heart to God, asking that somehow they

have me together to work out their differences and find a

mother-daughter rela onship that would mend her broken

heart.

Two days later, the daughter had a ruptured appendix and

was rushed to the hospital. The girl spent the next 3 days in

the hospital and then a week in recovery at home. The

mother was ever at her side, nursing her to health. In the

process of recovery they had ample me to talk and work

out their differences. Today the rela onship is progressing

well. As the mother said, “God answered my prayers but

certainly not in a way that I would have expected.” In this

story we see in ac on four fundamentals of prayer.

1. Prayer o en arises in mes of despera on, a er all else

has failed. Only in these moments, can some of us put

our lives in the hands of God.

2. Prayer needs to be honest. We can’t fool God anyway,

He already knows. The mother spoke to the Lord in all

sincerity. She told God about the situa on, her pain, her

anger, her sense of failure and her despera on. When

we pray, we need to trust that God knows our plight

and sees our lives completely. Prayer is a ma er of

opening our hearts to God so that God might fill us with

the Holy Spirit. If we feel something, express it to God;

if we want or need something, ask.

3. Prayer is not about changing God’s mind. Its purpose is

not to convince God to do things our way. Too many

mes we approach God as though God has made a

terrible mistake and needs to be corrected. Worse yet,

we act as though there is some secret prayer formula

we can follow that will force God to do what we want.

No, God wants our good and loves us uncondi onally.

We need only to ask that His will be done.

4. Prayer is a dialogue, a talking and a listening. A er we

have shared all that we are with God, we need to listen.

God’s response may not be exactly what we are

expec ng. God answers our prayers but God is o en

the God of surprises. With our listening heart we can

recognize God’s ac on when it occurs.

If you feel that your prayer life is dried up or dusty, try telling

God about it. Oops! That’s a prayer, isn’t it?

A man was tailgated in heavy traffic. Suddenly, the light

turned yellow and he stopped. Who knows what was

going on with the tailgater, but she hit the ceiling and

the horn, screaming and gesturing in frustra on. A police

officer suddenly appeared at her window, ordered her into

his patrol car, and drove to the sta on, where she was

processed and placed in a holding cell.

A er a couple of hours, she was escorted to the booking

desk, where the arres ng officer was wai ng. He said, “I'm

very sorry, ma’am. This is a big mistake. I pulled up behind

you while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy

in front of you, and cursing a blue streak. I no ced the

‘Choose  Life’  license plate, the ‘Follow  me  to  Saint 

Dominic’s’ bumper s cker, and the rosary on the rear-view

Saint Paul tells us in today’s second reading,  

  “Watch carefully how you live” (Ephesians 5:15).

En una calle de mucho tráfico un carro seguía muy de cerca

al otro. Súbitamente la luz del semáforo se puso amarilla y

el chofer del carro delante paró. Quién sabe en qué estaba

pensando la mujer que conducía el carro de atrás, pero se

puso muy enfadada y tocó la bocina mientras gritaba y

hacía gestos de frustración. De repente ella vio un oficial

de policía que tocaba en su ventanilla ordenándola a entrar

en el carro patrulla. Se la llevó a la estación y allí fue

procesada y puesta en una celda.

Después de un par de horas la escoltaron hacia el buró de

arrestos donde estaba el policía que la había detenido,

quien le dijo: “Por favor, acepte nuestras disculpas, señora.

Todo esto ha sido una gran equivocación. Es que cuando la

vi tocando desaforadamente su bocina, poniendo el grito

en el cielo, maldiciendo e insultando al hombre del carro

delante, me fijé que usted tenía en la matrícula de su carro

un letrero de ‘Opte por la vida’, tenía también una calcoma-

nía en la defensa que dice ‘¿Qué haría Jesús?’ y otra que

dice, ‘Sígueme  hasta  la  parroquia  de  santo  Domingo’, y

además tenía un rosario colgando del espejo retrovisor.

On April 28 & 29, 2018, the Pastoral Council surveyed all

parishioners as part of their 3-year planning process.

Thank you for sharing your passion for our parish! Each

week, we will address survey concerns for our parish com-

munity here.

Reverence/Dress Code – Silence before and a er Mass;

a stricter dress code.

A Church is both a place of prayer and a place of gathering.

Both are important. Certainly reverence is important, but

so is hospitality. We try to balance these virtues. Please be

mindful of others; please move about and speak more

quietly, especially when others are in prayer.

We do encourage all parishioners to dress reverently; but,

we do not wish to become a parish that chas ses and

shames people about clothing. Please dress modestly to

greet the Lord and one another – without distrac ng

others from prayer.

This study of New Testament women

engages with women across a variety

of connec ons to Jesus and the apos-

responding to Jesus. We’ll Learn, Discuss, and Pray about:        

expectant faith, what it means to be touched by Jesus,

and the meaning of discipleship through the lives of the

women who lived in the first genera on of Chris anity.

The study features: DVD, book and commentary, Women 

in the New Testament, by Mary Ann Ge y-Sullivan, S.T.D. Ms. Ge y‐Sullivan received her Sacred Theology degree from the 

Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. She taught New Testament 

courses in colleges and seminaries for over thirty years; now re red, 

she devotes  me to wri ng and lecturing.
