The Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community, one
Church of many peoples, exists to praise and honor
God, to embrace the dignity of every person, to grow
together spiritually, and to witness to the Good
News of Jesus Christ in Redlands, California. We chal-
lenge ourselves to deepen our unity as we move
forward toward the vision of a new place of worship.

One of today’s themes is about seeking God's
way, God's will, God's commands. The apostles
have been unsuccessful in fishing "their way."
Jesus offers them another way: throw your net
off to the starboard side; and they find a huge
catch of fish. We are to pursue God's will, God's command,
God's way. We are to pursue the way of Jesus in all aspects of
our lives. We need to discern what Jesus would think, feel, and
do about all aspects of our lives.
At first, standing on the shore, Jesus is not recognized. But as
they neared the shore, the beloved disciple shouts, "It is the
Lord." They then share a meal with Him of the caught fish and
bread. Again, the resurrected Jesus had a glorified, spiritualized
body, not subject to the laws of time and space, and we are
promised the same at the end of time.
We are told by Scripture experts that part of the drama toward
the end of the Gospel is Peter struggling with the word "love."
The first two times that Jesus asked Peter if he loves him, Peter,
in the Greek language, can only respond with the word “like”:
"Yes, you know that I like you." It is only the third time that
Jesus asks him about whether he loves him that Peter is able to
say, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
We are taught a couple of things here - that the love of Jesus
manifests itself in service to others. The followers of Jesus
sense the presence of the spirit of the Risen One alive in the
needs of people around us. We love Jesus by feeding others.
I do not think Jesus chose Peter to be this central figure in His
movement because of his great power. I think Peter was chosen
because of his ordinariness. He claimed to not know Jesus. He
often was filled with bravado, but lacking in substance. Peter
was the man to lead people even with a shadowy side and sinful
dimensions of his life. That is the kind of rock he was: a person
who could understand human nature and would strive to feed
or strengthen human beings, and direct them toward life in
God's reign. We need to work as a Church, so that the role of
Peter in our own day is not, in any way, preserving the status
quo of the Church, rather than discerning God's will for the
Church.
Journeying with you,
Deacon Steve
Amamos a
Afirmó no conocer
a Jesús.

When we encounter others, we are to be God’s presence for them. This is what it means to be Christ’s person. “All will know you for my disciples in your love for one another” (John 13:35).
In today’s world, it is not easy to BE God’s presence for others and often we find ourselves feeling unequipped to do so; yet, Christ calls each of us to this important mission.
We are offering an experience to help you to renew your spirit, your hope, and your Catholic faith. This experience is the Parish Renewal Weekend Retreat. During this weekend, we explore the founda on of our beliefs and what it means to be a Catholic Chris an. You will receive knowledge about the faith while connec ng with other Cath-olics in our parish. Here are a few par cipants’ comments:
“The talks have reinforced my faith and hope in the Church.”
“This was a transforma ve weekend that all Catholics need.”
“Hands down, this was the best spiritual experience I have ever had.”
Over 300 parishioners have par cipated thus far, and they were deeply renewed. Today, they are more alive in the Spirit, more con-nected in community, and better able to be God’s presence for others ... to be living reminders of God’s love. Now, they can bear good fruit!
The media news outlets consistently share that our world is broken. God needs us to be His presence for the world. The early Christians were known for how they loved one another. In our own me, we too are called to bear in our lives the love and kindness of God. When we encounter others, we are to be God’s presence for them. This is part of the fruit that we bear as Catholic Chris ans!
This is our mission… Come and be renewed!
Blessings, Deacon Steve

4 Notre Dame’s Legacy and Ours Tears sprang to my eyes at the sight of Notre Dame Cathedral burning. The image of the flames glowing
through the rose window was haun ng. Then, I remembered that it was Holy Week with the dawn of
Resurrec on on the horizon.
I watched with joy while hundreds of Parisians knelt in the streets in prayer; and I celebrated the many
immediate and public commitments to donate billions of euros to restore this 856 year old “House of
God and abode of men”. But I really wondered what compelled people to pray and give. Here’s why:
Church a endance in France is among the lowest in the world, with surveys showing that only about 5%
of the total popula on, i.e. less than 10% of those who are nominally Catholics, now a end weekly mass. Pew Research 2017
So... why pledge billions? Why kneel in prayer? We can point to the deep roots of faith that the cathedral represents.
Notre Dame Cathedral took 182 years to build, from 1163 to 1345. Back then, a person’s average life expectancy was
about 31 years. This means 5 to 6 generations of family members invested and worked to build the majestic “House of
God and abode of men” dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. And, they KNEW that they would die before seeing the
cathedral completed.
THIS is selfless and visionary faith… faith that sees with God’s eyes. Faith that does not count the cost or worry about
getting something for oneself. Can you imagine the amount of trust and tenacity it required to build over 182 years?
Why did they kneel in the streets of Paris, praying to Our Blessed Mother? No lives were lost; this was not a hurricane,
earthquake or flood. Yet, this destruc on cut to the heart of Parisians’ true iden ty - an iden ty stripped away by the
false messages of secularism and rela vism. Could it be that the flames ignited the profound realiza on that this
architectural masterpiece represented someone greater… the unseen but ever living God?
Notre Dame Cathedral is a symbol that the Trinitarian God - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - is REAL and ALIVE.
This profound Truth is the real legacy. It is the legacy that we build day by day.
In 1893, the Catholic Community in Redlands numbered 300 parish families. Today, our Catholic Community numbers
3,433 parish families; and we con nue to grow because we seriously embrace our mission to share the profound Truth
of Jesus Christ and the Catholic faith - to draw all peoples to Christ.
By the me children born today graduate from high school, it is an cipated that our Catholic Community will number
approximately 5,235 parish families… about 15,000 souls. But, our church campuses were not built to serve the needs of
tomorrow’s families. It is me to look to the future and build.
Next year, we plan to put a spade in the ground.
We are seeking donors of selfless and visionary faith
who have the capacity to make a significant gi
so we can complete our building project in 2-3 years—
not in 182 years. Is this you?
Please call me to talk about how we can make this happen together.

Laudato Si’! In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis warns us against materialism and a “throw away” culture, which combine to damage our natural world, and our relationships with each other. An example of this is the disposable plastics we use, which break down into tiny particles and can enter our streams, lakes and oceans. There, they damage fish and other wildlife, as well as the people who rely on the water systems. One idea…this week keep a record of all the disposable plastics (and Styrofoam) products you use at home, school and at work. Can you find ways to replace these items with re-usable materials instead? Can you do without?
