Los profetas no adivinan el futuro. No son adivi-

nos. Sin embargo, lo que hacen es profetizar el

futuro. En otras palabras, comunican el mensaje

que Dios les dio, esencialmente: "Mira, si sigues

por este camino, puedo decirte lo que es proba-

ble que suceda... y no te va a gustar, no podrás

enmendarlo". Los profetas interpretan las señales de los tiempos

y le dieron a la gente el punto de vista de Dios, alentándolos a

cambiar su curso, al arrepen miento y la conversión, a la visión,

a buscar la vida en abundancia que Él quiere que tengamos.

En el Rito del Bau smo leemos y escuchamos

estas palabras durante la unción con el Santo Crisma:

"para que,  incorporado a su pueblo,  seas para siempre 

miembro  de  Cristo  Sacerdote,  de  Cristo  Profeta  y  de 

Cristo Rey”. En nuestro Bau smo, hemos sido dotados

con una porción de la iden dad de Jesús como sacer-

dote, profeta y rey. Somos un pueblo profé co.

Con discernimiento, fe, sabiduría y ciencia, estamos

llamados a escucharnos unos a otros y expresar

nuestras preocupaciones y nuestra visión.

Como Iglesia, como parroquia, como cris anos

individuales, estamos llamados a ser profetas el uno

para el otro. En los úl mos dos años he llegado a creer que de-

bemos ser profetas el uno para el otro. Necesitamos alentarnos

unos a otros para tener esperanza, para creer en una visión de

un futuro brillante para esta parroquia, para ser luz para las

generaciones futuras. Somos una parroquia dividida, limitada

por instalaciones inadecuadas que no sa sfacen las necesidades

de nuestra creciente y cada día más vibrante parroquia. Necesi-

tamos una nueva iglesia, un nuevo salón, una nueva escuela.

El hecho que tengamos algunos asientos vacíos en las Misas

de fin de semana no es un gran criterio para tomar una decisión

sobre este tema. Quienes no estamos a favor, debemos tratar

de procurar una perspec va de las necesidades de esta comuni-

dad hoy y mañana. Olive y Columbia ya no sa sfacen nuestras

necesidades. Pasen una semana en cada localidad este otoño

cuando la Academia y la mayoría de las clases de Formación de

Fe estén en sesión. Verán cómo usamos cada pulgada de espacio

para reuniones en ambas localidades y no tenemos espacio para

todos. Necesitamos más de 20 salones disponibles regularmente

para juntas, reuniones y clases para adultos y jóvenes.

Nuestras viejas instalaciones están desgastadas y es muy

costoso darles mantenimiento– y, este es dinero que preferiríamos

usar para el ministerio y la evangelización. Nuestras instalaciones

enen serios problemas eléctricos, estructurales y de manteni-

miento.

Eso es hoy. Hablemos ahora de mañana. Redlands y las áreas

circundantes están creciendo en población. Se están construyendo

nuevos conjuntos habitacionales en Highland y en el Pass Area, y

muchos feligreses ya viven en estas áreas. Para cuando los niños 

nacidos  hoy  se  gradúen  de High  School,  nuestra  familia  parro-

quial tendrá más de 5,200 familias. ¿Dónde los vamos a poner? 

¿Qué  po  de  parroquia  estamos  creando  para  ellos?  Tenemos

que pensar en preparar un lugar para nuestros futuros católicos

como lo hicieron los que vinieron antes que nosotros. Ahora es

nuestro turno de construir sobre el cimiento que hemos recibido;

y, al hacerlo, les hacemos honor y compar mos el Evangelio. Y

como está el mundo, las futuras generaciones NOS NECESITARÁN.

Estamos enfrentando una creciente escasez en el número de

sacerdotes disponibles. Por ahora tenemos la bendición de tener

tres sacerdotes, pero eso no va a durar. La realidad es que, dentro

de 10 años, tendremos por lo menos 800 familias más y ya

no podremos ofrecer 9 misas el fin de semana. La escasez de

sacerdotes, las estructuras viejas que son costosas de mantener,

la falta de espacio y el aumento de la población son las

señales de nuestro tiempo. Debemos interpretar estas

señales y trabajar juntos para caminar hacia la visión

que Dios ene para nosotros y para los que están por

venir.

El poder y el éxito de un mensaje profético se basan

en la apertura de quien lo escucha. Si nos reunimos y

no vemos otro punto de vista que no sea el nuestro,

no veremos otro. Como parroquia, podemos correr el

riesgo de actuar como los detractores de Nazaret.

Podemos ser incrédulos, negativos y no captar una visión

a largo plazo para esta parroquia. Podemos ser escépticos que dicen

que previamente fracasamos dos veces y que nunca sucederá.

Pero no creo que recaudar $7.5 millones de dólares para esa

visión signifique que hemos fracasado! Es un buen comienzo.

Ya se completaron las modificaciones al plan original. Es

importante tener en cuenta que, aunque los materiales de cons-

trucción han cambiado, el plan general de la localidad no ha

cambiado. Los cambios satisfacen las necesidades de uso actuales

y futuras, mejoran la eficiencia de la localidad, abordan problemas

de seguridad, proporcionan accesibilidad sin barreras para perso-

nas discapacitadas, incluyen soluciones solares y de sostenibilidad,

y permiten espacio para la expansión al empo que reducen los

costos. Se incluyen los "costos menores", como las cuotas y los

permisos de la ciudad, la gestión y construcción del proyecto, y la

con ngencia. Este trabajo detallado sienta las bases de un buen

terreno que cubrirá nuestras necesidades por generaciones. Con

esta base, podemos dar el siguiente paso. Esto implica obtener

donativos significativos de personas con visión. Podemos hacerlo.

Con Dios nada es imposible. ¿Estamos juntos en esto? ¿Vamos a

seguir adelante y terminarlo?

Al igual que Ezequiel, debemos sen r el movimiento del

Espíritu Santo dentro de nosotros. No respondamos como

Nazoreanos y veamos SOLAMENTE al hijo de un carpintero;

sino más bien, fijemos la mirada en el Señor y avancemos hacia

la visión que Él quiere para nosotros. Estamos llamados a ser

erra fér l donde las semillas del Evangelio puedan dar abun-

dantes frutos a través del Espíritu, para el beneficio de esta

comunidad parroquial y de los que vendrán.

Prophets do not fore-tell the future. They are

not fortune tellers. But, they do Forth-Tell the

future. In other words, they relate God’s mes-

sage given to them, essen ally, “Look, if you

con nue down this road, I can tell you what is

likely to happen… and you will not like it,

shape up.” Prophets read the signs of the mes and gave the

people God’s view, encouraging them to change their course,

to repentance and conversion, to vision, to seek the abundant

life He wants us to have.

Within the Rite of Baptism we read and hear these words during

the anoin ng with Sacred Chrism: “As  Christ  was  anointed 

Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you  live always as members 

of his body, sharing everlas ng life.”   In our Bap sm, we have

been gi ed with a por on of Jesus’ iden ty as priest, prophet

and king. We are a prophe c people. With discernment, faith,

wisdom and understanding, we are called to listen to one an-

other and to voice our concerns and our vision.

As a Church, as a parish, as individual Chris ans, we

are called to be prophets to one another. Over the

last two years I have come to believe that we must

be prophets to one another. We need to encourage

one another to hope, to believe in a vision of a

bright future for this parish, to be a light for future

genera ons. We are a divided parish, limited by

inadequate facili es that do not meet the needs of

our growing and increasingly vibrant parish. We

need a new church, a new hall, a new school.

The fact that we have a few empty seats at weekend Masses is

not a great criteria to make a decision on this issue. For those

of us who are naysayers, we need to try to obtain a perspec ve

of the needs of this community today and tomorrow. Olive and

Columbia no longer meet our needs. Spend a week at each

campus this Fall when the Academy and most Faith Forma on

classes are in session. You will see how we use every inch of

mee ng space at both sites and we cannot accommodate

everyone. We need more than 20 regularly available rooms for 

adult and youth ministry mee ngs, gatherings, and classes.  

Our old facili es are worn and increasingly costly to maintain –

and, this is money we would rather use for ministry and evan-

geliza on. Our sites have serious electrical, structural and

maintenance issues that limit their use and it’s not going to get

any be er.

That’s today. Now let’s talk about tomorrow. Redlands and the

surrounding areas are growing in popula on. New develop-

ments in Highland and in the Pass area are burgeoning, and

many parishioners already live in these areas. By  the  me   

children  born  today  graduate  from  high  school,  our  parish   

family will include over 5,200 families. Where will we put them?  

What  kind  of  parish  are  we  crea ng  for  them?  We need to

think about preparing a place for our future Catholics like those

who came before us did. Now it is our turn to build on the

founda on that we have received; and, in doing so, we honor

them and we share the Gospel. With the way the world is going

today, future genera ons will NEED us.

We are facing an increasing shortage in the number of priests

available. We are blessed with three priests today, but that is

not going to last. The reality is that, within 10 years, we will be

at least 800 families larger and will no longer be able to offer

9 weekend Masses. The priest shortage, aging structures that

are costly to maintain, lack of space, and increasing popula on

are the signs of our mes. We must read these signs and work

together in moving forward towards the vision God has for us

and for those to come.

The power and the success of a prophe c message relies upon

the openness of the listener. If we come together and see no

other point of view but our own, we will see no other. As a

parish, we can run the risk of ac ng like the

naysayers of Nazareth. We can be disbelieving,

nega ve, and fail to grasp a long me vision for this

parish. We can be skep cs who say that we previ-

ously failed twice and it will never happen. But I do

not believe that raising $7.5 million dollars towards

that vision means that we have failed! It is a good

start.

The amendments to the original plan are now

complete. It is important to note that, while building

materials have changed, the overall site plan has

not changed. Changes meet current and future usage needs,

improve the site’s efficiency, address security concerns, provide

barrier-free accessibility for disabled persons, include solar and

sustainability solu ons, and allow room for expansion while

reducing costs. “So costs” like city fees and permits, project

management and construc on, and con ngency are included.

This detailed work lays a founda on of good ground that will

meet our needs for genera ons. With this founda on, we can

take the next step. This involves securing significant gi s from

people of vision. We can do this. Nothing is impossible with

God. Are we together on this? Shall we move forward and get

this done?

Like Ezekiel, we must feel the movement of the Holy Spirit

within us. Let us not respond like Nazoreans and see ONLY a

carpenter’s son; but rather, let us fix our eyes on the Lord and

take steps toward the vision He desires for us. We are called

to be good ground where the seeds of the Gospel can yield

abundant fruit through the Spirit, for the benefit of this parish

community and those to come.

The RCIA process takes about seven months of discernment, studying, asking questions and counseling, and concludes with the reception of the Sacraments during the Easter season. We begin in September.

Living Stewardship Now

Jesus was a small-town boy. Everyone in Nazareth knew

him and his whole family, even all the cousins. He was the

carpenter, Mary’s boy, so when he spoke and taught with

authority in the synagogue they “took offense at him.”

How dare he? In Jesus’ world, you could work harder and

become better off, but once a carpenter always a carpen-

ter. Jesus did not press them, just as we cannot force

belief on other people. For parents whose grown children

have drifted away from the Church, it is tempting to pres-

sure them to come back. Sadly, this may increase the

distance and cause arguments. However some people are

just wai ng to be asked. True stories abound of men or

women who a end Mass for years with their Catholic

family, even giving generously to the parish, yet never

take that final step into the community un l someone —

and it could be you— asks, “Would you like to join the

Part of good stewardship is to be welcoming, invi ng, and 

hospitable,  with  no  strings  a ached.  Speak  to  people  

before and a er Mass. Volunteer as a greeter, or with a 

ministry serving returning Catholics. Be a sponsor for some-

one in RCIA. Welcome newcomers in your neighborhood.

Jesús era un pueblerino. Todos en Nazaret lo conocían a él y toda

su familia, aun a sus primos. Él era el carpintero, el hijo de María,

así es que cuando habló y enseñó con autoridad en la sinagoga

todos “estaban desconcertados”. ¿Cómo se atreve? En empos de

I personally invite you to join the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Men’s Group

where you will be challenged to grow deeper in your Catholic faith. Come and

strengthen your masculine iden ty and voca on, meet other men like yourself,

share our lives with one

another. When we are

shown hospitality, we become more recep ve to others

because they have shared a part of themselves. How we 

treat people is important not only when it comes to larger 

affairs, such as helping those in need, comfor ng the dis-

traught, or doing a favor for someone, but also in our every-

day interac ons. If every breath we take belongs to God, 

then at every turn our interac ons with people have the

poten al of bringing someone closer to the source of that

breath. Serving coffee and donuts a er Mass provides

us with a simple opportunity to raise the mundane to a 

level where God can be no ced. This is the heart of real

hospitality.
