The Monthly Message from Rev’d Susan McIvor Dear Friends,

I remember when I was growing up that our front garden was full of Michaelmas daisies. Tall, proud purple flowers with bright yellow centres these flowers somehow symbolised for me the re-turn to school for the Autumn term. Sometimes I would even take in a bunch of those flowers for my teacher, along with an apple for me in a paper bag with my name on.

Michaelmas, or the Feast of Michael and All Angels, is celebrat-ed on the 29th of September every year. As it falls near the equinox, the day is associated with the beginning of autumn and the shortening of days; in England, it is one of the “quarter days”. There are traditionally four “quarter days” in a year (Lady Day (25th March), Midsummer (24th June), Michaelmas (29th September) and Christmas (25th December)). It used to be said that harvest had to be completed by Michaelmas, almost like the marking of the end of the productive season and the beginning of the new cycle of farming. It was the time at which new servants were hired or land was exchanged and debts were paid. The term is still used today for the time of electing magistrates.

As Michaelmas is the time that the darker nights and colder days begin - the edge into winter - the celebration of Michael-mas is associated with encouraging protection during these dark months. It was believed that negative forces were stronger in darkness and so families would require stronger defences during the later months of the year. Michaelmas is the feast of St Mi-chael. St Michael is the protector against the dark of the night and traditionally the Archangel who fought against Satan and his evil angels.

(Continued on page 4)

The Michaelmas daisy flowers late, usually between the end of Au-gust and early October and stands bright and proud in in the gar-den when the vast majority of other flowers are coming to an end. It is probably associated with the celebration of Michaelmas be-cause as St Michael is the protector from darkness and evil, so the daisy fights off the advancing darker nights and shorter days of Autumn and Winter.

The Autumn term is upon us and for many people work resumes its routines after the lazier, brighter Summer months. We think of our local schools; for children starting new schools or new classes; of teachers and especially those who are embarking on new ca-reers. We think of other school support staff adjusting to the fa-miliar pattern once again. Of young people moving from school to college or into the world of work; and of those who have yet to find their way. We pray for children and young people in our com-munity that they may be protected from darkness and evil. And we pray for people who, in the Autumn term of their lives, often fear the loneliness and isolation that dark nights bring. For those of us who count ourselves neither amongst the young nor the old let us stand like the Michaelmas daisies, bright, proud protectors from darkness and evil as we witness to God’s love in Christ.

Monday Bible Study We will be meeting again on 7th September to discuss what we would like to study leading up to Christmas. Drinks and cake will be served at the home of Chris and Julie. Please speak to them if you require more infor-mation etc. Thanks

9.30 am until 12.00 noon Come and enjoy the usual relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Tea Coffee Books Raffle Fairtrade The ’girls and boys’ would love to see you

there. Money raised is for the Building Works

After Morning Service May we take the opportunity to remind you that there is no one responsible for stacking the chairs after our Morning Service and so it is a collective responsibility. Verity and David Dock-ray often put the chairs away and we are grateful to them but please don’t rely on them to do it every week. On a similar subject, we would be very grateful if, those of you who use hymn books, could return them to Foyer and not leave to our ‘Welcomers’ as some are now find that task more diffi-cult as they get older. Your thoughtfulness and consideration will be very much appre-ciated. Thank you.

Today’s Sunday Evening Service Our Evening Service TODAY is to be a little different and is focusing on creation – we are to meet at the Church at 4.00 pm and then walk down to the nature area where we will have a guided tour led by Colin. We would like to make this accessible to all, if you would like to join us but will need transport can you please let Julie know, if on the other hand you don’t want to do the tour around the nature area, please feel free to join us at Church for the 5.00pm cup of tea, we are hoping to take some pictures to be projected during the service for those that cannot make the nature area.

27th Produce Show and Photographic Competition

This takes place NEXT Saturday 12th September at 2.00 pm. All the information and entry forms are now available.

Good News! Following our appeal last Sunday, we have now had offers from 5 folk in the Church to sponsor the Photographic Competition, there are 6 categories so we are looking for one more person to sponsor the final £10 prize, please speak to Keith Jennison.

We are also urgently looking for prizes for the Tombola so give them to the Froggatts.

Photographs for the Photographic Competition need to be with Keith Jennison by TODAY.

This is an important event in our Church calendar so we hope you will support it well with proceeds going in to one of our Church Funds.

Church Flowers The flowers in the Church today are provided by

Marian Bannister Our thanks to her.

R & R Group update. The good news is that the toilets are fin-ished and available for use from today. Even if you do not want to use the facili-ties, please do go and have a look at what has been done. Note particularly that the positions of the Ladies and Gentlemen’s have been reversed so please pay particular attention which one you go in to!!!!!!!! We think you will agree that it has been money well spent. As regards the other work, this is progressing ‘behind the scenes’ and we hope to give a full report at the Open Church Meeting on the 4th October.

Mike Prince on behalf of the R & R Group ED: Thanks to the R & R Group for getting the work done this far, they have overseen the work in the toilets and they have carried out the painting that has been done. Well done to them and we look forward to seeing what the next stage brings.

Harvest Festival You will see in our Diary Dates on page 11 that our Harvest Festival is to be on Sunday 18th October and that our produce will go to the Derby Refugee Centre. They have advised that they particularly need rice, pasta, tinned tuna, tinned tomatoes, cooking oil and tinned sweetcorn. Tins of fruit are also a good health boost. Whilst the date is a way off, we thought knowing this may help you.

Alistair Mackenzie Thank you to everybody who has shown love and support-ed us during Alistair’s illness and those who attended his funeral. Thank you also for the help with refreshments on the day f his funeral, we are very grateful. £500 was donated to Macmillan Cancer Care who were very grateful.

Margaret Mackenzie and Family

Building Works Fund We are still ahead of out target at the half way stage of 2015 having raised £6,235 towards our target of £8.000 for the year. This is excellent news and every pound we can raise now reduces whatever shortfall we will have in our funding once we know the final costs. In the mean-time, thank you all who give in any way towards this appeal. An important way of supporting this fund is to give using our weekly envelope scheme. Those of you who give using these should have collected the new envelopes, if not, the should be available on the Back Bay table this morning. The R & R Group are continuing to work on you behalf (see the re-port elsewhere in this issue) and they need your support. We have spent some of our hard-earned money on the toilets but we will need a great deal more if we are to achieve our goals on the re-mainder of the building. Please continue to be prayerful on this and particularly the issue of fund raising and grant applications.

Coffee Morning - Saturday 29th August What a brilliant idea Amanda and Katriona along with Fiona had when they said lets try selling bacon or sausage cobs. They just couldn't keep up with the demand. They even had to fetch more bacon. Well done and thank you!

Could do with more Bric a Brac as it's getting quite short now but it did raise £73.10. Coffee and Tea £40.80,Cobs and cake £34.70 and Raffle £60.00.

Thank you Mary and Murial for your apple pie and scones.

A total of £208.60 has been passed into the Church Rebuilding Fund.

It got quite busy for saying it was Bank Holiday Saturday with one person telling me there was over 80 people looking around mid morning

My thanks to all the team and to everyone who came along to sup-port us.

Next Coffee Morning is on Saturday 26th September between 9.30 am and 12.00 noon.

Raffle prizes are needed urgently. please
