why?
AS Media EvaluationLyric Magazine Molly Masters
What is a media institution?
Defined as:Businesses that produce, regulate and structure media products
“
”An example of a media institution is Bauer Media, who I have previously
featured on my blog as part of my research and planning.
Bauer Media is a multinational media company which operates in 16 countries worldwide and comprise 300 magazines, including ‘Q’ and
‘Kerrang!’
Which institution is best to distribute my media product?
Bauer Media Wenner Media IPC Mediao Comprises 300

o H Bauer Publishing includes women’s weekly magazines, TV listings

o Three publishing divisions: IPC Connect, IPC Inspire (music magazines) and IPC Southbank
IPC MEDIA
I choose IPC Media as the kind of media institution I would like to distribute my media product ‘Lyric Magazine’.
Why?
It is a successful UK-operating publisher, and this is where I would like my magazine to be
sold
It has existing experience in music magazine publishing, with publications in similar
genre to ‘Lyric’
They have knowledge of how to target this audience of genre They already have methods of
expansion, such as highly popular websites
Front Cover Comparisons
Here are some examples of IPC Media’s music magazine covers.
IPC Media Front Covers – NME IPC Media’s front covers for NME music magazine are not that dissimilar to my own. The magazine cover on the right hand side shares a similar close up shot to my own as well as the same colour scheme, however, the one on the left is noticeably different in shot types, colour scheme and layout. This proves to me that the IPC Media share the same ‘values’ as well as having knowledge of how to market a music magazine in the same genre as my own.
Key Features: - bold title header of ‘NME’ - multiple images - clear colour schemes - bold colours and fonts
Front Cover Comparisons
Here is the front cover I have constructed for Lyric magazine.
My Front Cover – Lyric Magazine
It is similar to that of the IPC Media’s front
covers in the way that it includes a coherent colour
scheme throughout as well as bold fonts which stand out to
the readers and make it clearer to see.
It is dissimilar also in the way that it only uses one image which draws more
attention to Emmie herself, as opposed to a busy background taking the focus away from her.
It also has a colour scheme which is the same as that of the double page spread, creating a link and
familiarity between the two.
Contents Page Comparisons
Below is an example of an IPC Media magazine’s contents page.
IPC Media’s contents page contains the majority of its information in one column to the right of the main feature picture. Underneath this image there is slightly, larger information on a specific (presumably double page feature) on the Arctic Monkeys.
Contents Page Comparisons
Here is a copy of my contents page for Lyric magazine.
My Contents Page– Lyric Magazine
It is similar to that of the IPC Media’s
contents page in the way that it includes
multiple images (if not more to draw more
interest for the readers). Also, it uses a major image at the top
to draw the most interest to the double page spread feature.
It is dissimilar, though, in the way that it has a two
column structure to separate the
information and make it more clear to the
audience.
I can see a similarity between the NME contents page and my own
in that it uses the colours from the pictures to match a colour
scheme. For example, the red of the band member’s top on the
NME publication is reminiscent of how my colour scheme of blue
matches the blue of the light on the mix desk and the blue of
Emmie’s eyes.
Double Page Spread Comparisons
Here is an example of one of IPC Media’s double page spread features.
In some ways, this double page spread by Bauer Media’s NME magazine is not all that dissimilar to my own. For example, it includes a picture which has direct eye contact with the audience to connote confidence or challenge, as well as this image running onto the second page of the double spread in order for the two pages to be sufficiently linked.
However, the NME double page spread does not use a header on the first page to link the two pages.
Double Page Spread Comparisons
In comparison, here is my double page spread feature for Lyric magazine.
My Double Page Spread – Lyric Magazine My double
page spread
uses a title on the left
page to make a
connection to the right
page, which the
IPC Media’s double page
spread does not
do.
My double page spread encompasses
an image which runs
over onto the second page, drawing the reader’s eye
to the text, as is achieved in the IPC Media double page spread. In addition to
this, there is direct eye
contact used by both to
address the audience.
