ground simulated rocket plume ingestion whichobviates the need for multiple expensive in-flight firings during development.

All test facilities are fitted with the most recentdata acquisition systems guaranteeing bestdata quality, together with the capability torecord up to 2,000 different parameters. MTU’smost recent data acquisition system has beendesigned to meet the growing requirements ofdevelopment test cells. It can record, displayand process data for all engine parameters ata real time sampling rate of 200 Hz and enableselected parameters to be acquired at a sam-pling rate of up to 5,000 Hz.

A variety of measurement techniques includingtip timing, tip clearance, infrared and highspeed video allows special surveys by usingthe latest in digital measurement systemtechnology.

The non-linear performance model developedby MTU enables the test crew to continuouslymonitor engine condition and the health andsafety parameters during engine operation.

The four different Munich engine test facilitiesfor development tests enable 24 hour opera-tion of all types and sizes of turbo engines–three test cells for jet and fan engines up to400 kN thrust, with and without afterburner,plus one test cell for turboshaft engines up to3 MW shaft power. Additionally MTU intensive-ly uses the Stuttgart located altitude testfacility for engines up to 140 kN with possiblereheat operation and the Ludwigsfelde locatedtest facility for the high power prop engines upto 15 MW shaft power. MTU runs heavy instru-mented development test engines as well aslight instrumented endurance test engines.

Proven skills and capabilities cover the com-plete spectrum of engine validation and certi-fication testing, including operability, controlsystem, and telemetry tests plus testing ofvibration signatures, dynamic behavior andemissions.

Hot day conditions with high ambient temper-atures can optionally be achieved via test cellintegrated heating. The well experienced staffat MTU is able to perform bird strike, sand,hail, ice and water ingestion tests as well ascorrosion tests.

Program-planning, verification and validation

Following on from the conceptual engine designstage comes the validation process. Materialand hardware planning, purchasing, specifictest hardware and module allocation planningrequired for verification of the test program areother key activities performed. The validationprogram covers rig/component tests and fullengine tests (bench and flight) with analyticaland mechanical evaluation of the test results.The validation and certification tests demon-strate compliance with the specification andflight safety regulations. They are ultimatelythe basis for customer approval.

At the end of the successful validation programan input for the release of the system or com-ponent with type-certificate will be given foreither commercial or military engine applica-tion from the appropriate authority.

All activity at MTU is ISO 9000-certified.

Flight test QualityMTU’s product quality is based on the pro-fes-sional work of its highly skilled staff ratherthan relying on frequent checks and retro-spective corrective actions.

The flight test team takes responsibility forengine integration and flight test. The person-nel prepare, monitor and evaluate engine flighttests to achieve validation and certification.

The complete carefree package comprises allengine related tasks together with the appro-priate servicing and maintenance aspects andincludes the required quality management pro-visions for flight engines. Usually the flight testteam performs as a fully integrated supportteam at the customer’s flight test center. Ex-perience on military as well as on commercialengines is available.
