Rustic Mornings I have always been on the lookout for unsuspecting hole in the wall restaurants. I love the feeling of finding something out of the ordinary, and trying out their house specialties plate by plate. I chronicle almost every restaurant I visit, while taking into consideration the various factors that have made my meal perfect or otherwise. To be honest, I dont always enjoy every new discovery, but its a challenge I willingly take upon myself. After all, the only way to new discoveries is to immerse ones self in the experience of it, and thats exactly how I felt when I heard of Rustic Mornings by Isabelo.

Rustic Mornings is located in San Roque, Marikina City, around 10 to 15 minutes away from Ateneo. To me, Marikina had always been uncharted territory, and I worried if Ramon and I would find it right away. Thankfully, it wasnt that difficult. A huge tarpaulin pointed us into the direction of Rustic Mornings, and upon entering the big silver gates, I already knew I was going to love it.

Reminiscent of Sonyas Garden in Tagaytay City, Rustic Mornings is a garden-style restaurant. It has an air-conditioned indoor area that seats 40 people, and several al fresco dining areas that are ideal for larger groups. The indoor area was reserved at the time that we came, so we sat outside instead. As the restaurant name suggests, the restaurant is decorated in a rustic fashion. Recycled materials hung from the ceiling, while paintings, and old pots and pans filled the walls. It didnt look messy at all. In fact, everything complemented each other quite nicely.

Once we were settled, Ramon and I thumbed through the menu, and were surprised to see how affordable the items were. I had expected it to be priced higher, but I wasnt complaining. Apart from the traditional breakfast meals, the restaurant also serves a list of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, sweets, pastries and more. After going through the menu over and over, I eventually settled for the Beef Tapa, while Ramon got a plate of Waffles, Buffalo Chicken, and Salad.

  • BLOOMING bREAKFASTS My order came first. I looked at my plate with gusto, eagerly waiting to savor the various flavors. The tapa was sweet and savory, and had a hint of tartness when dipped in the vinaigrette sauce. I loved how my eggs were perfectly done sunny side up, and was even topped with a dash of chili powder. The tapa and the eggs both have strong flavors, but the garlic rice balanced it out. I didnt really like the wansoy salad though, so I just left it on the side.

When Ramons plate finally came, I looked at him with envy. I was almost full from my plate, but I knew I could still allot an extra bite (or two) off his plate. The salad (Caesar, I guessed) was ordinary, but you could tell the lettuce was fresh because of its crunchy texture. I was quite disappointed with the buffalo chicken though. It wasnt spicy at all, even when dipped in the marinara chipotle! When I had a bite of the waffle, however, I was hooked. It was crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. Every bite was oozing with the flavors of their batter, butter and homemade syrup. I just had to have another.

I have never had a more perfect waffle in my life. Ramon and I wondered about the waffle maker they use to make it. I thought it was big enough to be shared by two people, but I might be the only one saying that because Ramon and I had already eaten prior to this one. As with the earlier waffle on Ramons plate, this was just as crispy, albeit a tad bit burnt on one side. The butter was a perfect marriage of sweet and salty, and provided all the necessary flavors on its own. Ramon and I agreed that the waffle didnt even need the homemade syrup, unless we wanted it sweeter.

Hallways, Highways and the NEW SCHOOL of Style

BY ANA CADELIA Theres already so much on a typical Ateneans plate. Faced with the challenge of balancing ones academics, org work, social life and sleep, he or she is constantly on-the-go, whether its running from Bellarmine to CTC or grabbing a latte in Starbucks. Not only do these blue blooded Katipuneros and Katipuneras stay on top of their academic and org life, but their fashion statements are spot on and on trend.

Most would comment and often ridicule those who overdress for school. Ateneo is a hodgepodge of personalities with different interests. Dont expect everyone to understand and appreciate something that others deem trivial. Its true; making Red Brick Road and Katipunan Avenue year-round fashion week runways isnt on top of everyones list of priorities. Yes, there is a fine line between being trendy and simply over-the-top. Seeing girls wearing party dresses, fur vests and high-heeled boots to class does make you cringe. An A for effort, I guess? In contrast, those who make it seem effortless to stay stylish garner the right kind of attention from both types of people: those who actually care about fashion and those who are just glad to be clothed in class.

In reality, though, there are certain factors to be considered when dressing for school. Aside from analyzing the chances of running into crushes (and even frenemies), the trendy Atenean takes into consideration the days agenda, classroom climate, the dreaded Rizal Library and SOM dress codes, and basically, shame and appropriateness. Every style conscious student has probably dealt

Mika Talusan, 3 BS Psychology, is on the way to an Ateneo CODE org meeting in a dress from Forever

    21 and shoes from Sebago.

with these, including me. Totally forgetting about an org general assembly which involved an obstacle course challenge, I went through hula hoops wearing a bandage skirt. I barely survived a CS30 class freezing my ass under the air-conditioner in a short flowy dress. After being labeled as that girl who broke the SOM dress code by my

Finance professor, I have stopped wearing sleeveless tops to his classes. Though these seem to be horror stories, my outfit choices have brought some humor and drama into my college life. After some of my guy friends kept teasing me about my outfit, I checked the tag of a sheer frilly black blouse I was wearing to school that day just to

see that it was actually lingerie from the Intimates section of Forever 21 without me knowing. Then love found me (and left me months later) when I chose to wear a snug electric blue dress to an after-class drinking session. In the end, the moral of the story for every Atenean dressing to impress is: follow the rules, both written and unwritten.

Either way, the Ateneo campus will always be a stomping ground for both the smart and stylish. These four individuals (pictured above and in the next page) are no exception. They get an A for their OOTDs.3

We could all learn a lesson from these stylish individuals, and these are just few from the thousands that turn the Ateneo hallways into runways. These kids dont only have a thing or two about high grades but high fashion as well. These Ateneans will soon be experts in their own fields, and the fashion industry should brace itself for this new breed of fashionistas, who constantly amaze with their ability to balance studies and style.

    EATSTREETS: Ababu

BY GORBY PAJARO In a little corner on Xavierville Avenue lies what is believed to be the prime shawarma joint of the area surrounding and close to Ateneo. I am not talking about the Uncle Moes of Maginhawa or the Hassans of Katipunan Extension. No not even the Kebabers of Katipunan. Im talking about the one and only Ababu of Xavierville Avenue.

History: Until about 6 years ago, Ababu wasnt situ-ated in Xavierville. It started out as a small shawarma shop in Maginhawa Street. I had been going there since I was 8 years old. Business was doing good for that little shop and so they decided to expand and transfer their restaurant to the Xavierville lot that boasted of twice the floor plan of the past area. Since then, they have flourished in Xavierville attracting stu-dents from the Ateneo and UP, even with the pres-ence of Kebabers, a new startup shawarma joint in Katipunan catering to the higher social class markets.

Food: Although Ababu doesnt look like a very attractive place to eat, their food tells another story. Personally, I know no better place in the Philippines to order Shawarma Meat. It has a slight sour/salty taste and the texture is hard but not as hard as the shawarma sold in malls. The pita bread is nothing spectacular, but then again when is it ever? The sauce is quite different. It tastes a bit more sour than usual but it is not as creamy, it is more of liquid than cream. They also take pride of good chicken kebab cooked and white colored.

Ambiance: Definitely a place of the street. It does not boast of very good surroundings, it is open aired, and it is beside a main road. It makes up for it though with the food.

Popular Food:1. Shawarma Rice: A dish with shawarma meat, buttered rice, tomatoes, onions and a sunny side-up-egg and a free iced tea. The full set meal. P1102. Shawarma Wrap (all beef): A pita wrap filled with shawarma meat. Great for a protein snack. P553. Oxbrain: exactly what it says fried and served. P53

    Amidst theNight Light

BY DYAN SUACO After a weeks worth of papers, readings, and group works, Friday nights are every Ateneans break from the stress. Events ranging from gigs and parties are anticipated by many. It is where, for one night, Ateneans let go of their books, pens, and IDs and transform to an alter-ego of glitz and glam.

As I asked around, there was generally a different perspective between boys and girls as to what to wear in a party. Ive also observed that girls tend to put more effort in their outfit and it even frustrated me at how easy it is for guys to dress up. With this, I decided to emphasize the disparity between gender preferences as they enjoy the night life.

GIRLS Flashy dress, big-ass accessories, and high heels these are the top three essentials Atenean girls wear to org parties. Lyka Llenado, a sophomore, mentioned that Ateneans tend to wear their best clothes. They want to be noticed. When I asked what girls wear to parties, Dress or skirts are the top answers from a number of Ateneans. Tony mentioned that its fun to dress up and look nice as these parties are one of the few opportunities a busy student as her gets to have fun with friends. It is also the chance to wear those 4-inch heels lying around in ones room.

Patricia, a dormer, seldom goes to parties but shared that it is important for her to dress up for it to fit in not underdressed but not overly prepared as well. Sometimes, it doesnt even matter if youre comfortable with what youre wearing.

Heres Patricia in an org party form last year. Both top

and pants are from Plains and Prints.

  • GUYS

As mentioned earlier, guys are not as concerned as girls when it comes to deciding what to wear in a party. Karlo and Kurt, both seniors, dont follow the theme of the party. Kurt personally thinks its corny and goes with a polo and maong pants.

    DESIGNER DINNERS

Kurt is wearing a red tie on top of a blue polo. It ties up with black slacks and shoes.

Karlo mentioned that he simply dresses up to look legit but comfort is still more important than anything else.Karlos clothes

    are from Dockers as he

    parties with fellow course

    mates.

Kurt adds that dressing up makes you feel confident, gagawin mo kahit ano. As the lights dim, music play, and drinks served, Ateneans enter a new kind of school.

From showy and eye-catching dresses, to pressed polo and suits, every Atenean prepares for this Friday night. It is one of the rare moments where everyone dresses up and enters a new persona.

    HaruSushi Bar & Restaurant

BY RAMON LOPEZ The number of quality food establishments in Kapitolyo, Pasig City has steadily increased throughout the past few years. Following the trend of other booming food communities such as Maginhawa in Quezon City and BF Homes in Paraaque, Kapitolyo boasts of several small food establishments that have become popular in bringing new, affordable and good quality dishes to eager customers. Filipino foodies have matured; they do not only limit themselves to popular malls and other commercial areas for their meals, but are more adventurous now. They seek new gastronomic delights in night markets such as Mercato Centrale, and now in these growing foodie havens like Kapitolyo. Several Kapitolyo originals such as Charlies Grind & Grill and Mad Marks have branched out and expanded to different venues, but there are still a few restaurants that are still exclusive to Kapitolyo. Haru Sushi Bar & Restaurant is one of the hidden gems exclusive to Kapitolyo.

Japanese food has always been one of my favorite cuisines, and one of the restaurants that I believe does Japanese cuisine best is Haru. The exterior of the restaurant itself already separates itself from the competition. Kapitolyo takes the form of a small subdivision, and most of the restaurants in this area are old residential homes that were converted into actual restaurants. Haru follows this mold, but upgrades the decorations and furniture with a truly Japanese influence and staying true to bringing in an authentic Japanese theme to their diners. From cherry blossoms to an indoor pond and wooden bridge, to the Japanese figures and decorations, and to the calm Japanese songs playing throughout the restaurant, the environment Haru has certainly gives one the feeling of being in the Land of the Rising Sun itself.

The furniture inside Haru is distinctly Japanese

The view of Haru from outside

The food served in Haru, like the restaurant itself, does its best to bring

an authentic Japanese experience to their customers. As the restaurant name states, Haru is a sushi bar. It is known for having

fresh and authentic sushi and sashimi prepared by an actual Japanese sushi chef. This is evident by the thick and succulent pieces of Salmon Sashimi that I always come back for. One order, which to a student budget can be quite pricey at 308 pesos, is worth the price, especially compared to other Japanese restaurants that also serve salmon sashimi.9

    Salmon Sashimi (Php 308)

Other sashimi dishes Ive tried are the Uni Sashimi and Spicy Tuna. Both deliver the same freshness and quantity as the Salmon Sashimi; however, the Spicy Tuna somewhat lacks that extra kick and spice.

Uni Sashimi (Php 242) Spicy Tuna (Php 290) Chirashi Sushi (Php 538)

Harus quality dishes, however, doesnt stop with their raw selections. They have one of the biggest menus Ive seen for a Japanese Restaurant, while providing all the staple Japanese meals. From the classic Ebi Tempura, to various Yakitori dishes, to simple Ramen and the popular Donburi, Haru is sure to satisfy whatever Japanese craving any stomach desires. Although most of the entres Ive tried seem somewhat ordinary and average, their diverse and lengthy menu is sure to keep you curious and coming back for more. Its quite unfair to compare their ramen bowls to the likes of Ukkokei Ramen Ron or their tonkatsu to Yabu: House of Katsu because those are the restaurants specialties in their own right. Despite this, Haru does justice to their dishes and gives consistent quality to all of the items on their menu. In the end, sushi and sashimi are still understandably the highlights of Haru, but the rest of their menu should not be overlooked. You never know what hidden gem you might find there.

  • DESIGNER DINNERS DESIGNER DINNERS Ive gone back to Haru several times for different occasions, and it has always been a pleasant and satisfying experience. The first time I went there, they were only on their soft opening with a limited menu, but in the weeks and months after, Haru has grown and established itself as one of the best Japanese restaurants thats still quite affordable. Ive gone here for a Valentines dinner date and for my 21st birthday dinner, and I can say that Haru was a very ideal place for both those dinners. There are small tables good for those romantic dates, and are set to the background of beautiful cherry blossoms. There are also large tables in separate rooms with genuine Japanese objects and pieces decorated all around for large family gatherings. No matter what the occasion, Haru Sushi Bar and Restaurant is a must-try whenever youre in the Kapitolyo area.
