Finally, we have settled back into our regular routine: rushing the kids to and from school and shuttling them around town to after-school activities. Football season is in full swing and summer vacation is now a distant memory. The temperature is finally starting to cool off a bit. With the heat and humidity dropping, we can get back to enjoying outdoor family activities and gatherings with friends.

With the cooler weather comes every kid’s favorite fall holiday – Halloween. It’s time to decorate the house with pumpkins, stock up on candy bars and lollipops, and take your little ones shopping for costumes. Pretty soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized superheroes, princesses, witches and rock stars. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these precious moments, for these are memo-ries that will last a lifetime.

Have a Happy Halloween everyone!

Sincerely, Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

This month, Davie stuDents will have a much better idea of what it takes to run the Town of Davie. They

will tour Town Hall and may even get to visit with the Mayor and/or Councilmembers.

It is all part of Government Week, which will be held from October 14 to 18. The Florida League of Cities, an association of member municipalities throughout Florida, is sponsoring “My city: I’m part of it; I’m proud of it.” The program is designed to educate school-aged children about their local government.

“The Town participates in Government Week, because we feel it is important for students to see local government in action,” said Phillip Holste, Intergovernmental Affairs Manager. “Through a tour of Town Hall, they typically receive their first expo-sure to government in action.”

Approximately 100 students are expected to attend throughout the week. Between the hours of 9:30am and 3:30pm, they will tour the Town Hall facility, where they can observe the Town staff per-forming their daily tasks. They will have the opportunity to interact with staff in areas, such as Administration; Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs; Budget and Finance; Human Resources; Town Clerk’s office; Planning and Zoning;

Building; and Engineering. Fire engines, police and public works vehicles might also be available for the kids to see, since those departments are not located at Town Hall.

Holste says that he hopes that the tours will encourage young people to get active and involved in the Town.

“Residents have the most direct con-tact to local governments,” said Holste.

“Decisions made by Davie’s Mayor, Councilmembers and staff directly impact the people who live in Davie. Everything from taxes and major infrastructure to soccer leagues and drinking water are decided on by Town staff and elected officials. We try to show the students that it is the Davie residents who can impact local government by being an active participant.

Schools/groups that are interested should download an application at www.davie-fl.gov and submit it no later than October 9. Groups may not exceed 40 students per tour group and must adhere to

school board standards, as it relates to the number of adults required to supervise children on field trips. Once registration is full, no other groups will be accepted.

For information, call 954-797-1163 or send an email to [email protected].

W ith the holiDays approaching, many have alreaDy starteD shopping for those perfect gifts. Chances are you will find them at the 7th Annual Town of Southwest Ranches Country Roads Arts and Crafts

Festival. The event will be held on October 19, from 10am to 4pm, at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. It has become a favorite among residents in the community.

“As always, our lineup of artists and crafters is diverse and interesting,” said December Lauretano-Haines, PROS Coordinator. “Our date for the event makes it a perfect chance to find holiday gifts and spend time with neighbors and friends. The venue also lends itself to the event perfectly. Our Emerald Award-winning Equestrian Park is peaceful, lushly landscaped, with restrooms, a pavilion, and a playground. It has every-thing folks need to come for an hour or stay the whole day.”

All of the items at the festival are handmade or hand-embellished crafts and original art. They include paper arts, hand-crafted jewelry, specialty wood products, mosaics, paintings, children’s and students’ items, stained glass, holi-day crafts, pet items and more. The Town of Southwest Ranches will be providing

musical entertainment for the event. There will also be plenty of food from vendors.

Holly Anderdon attended the festival last year with her family and looks forward to returning.

“I did most of my holiday shopping at the festival,” said Holly. “It was also a great opportunity to catch up with neighbors, family and friends.”

For those who have the creative bug, it is not too late to sign up to exhibit. If you love to sew, paint, knit, quilt, draw, throw pottery, or do some other type of handiwork and have items to sell to the public, the festival is a great place to do it. Available booth sizes include: 10 x 10 ($50), 10 x 20 (100) and 10 x 30 ($150). Since the number of arts/craft venders is not limited, there is still plenty of space available.

Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Avenue. For information or an application, visit www.southwestranches.org or send an email to [email protected].

Four stuDents, who train at vantage point Equestrian in Southwest Ranches, recently partici-pated in the annual Camp Fox Lea Plain Brown Paper

Wrapper Horse Show in Venice, Florida. Crystal Valentine, Charlotte Rowe, Lucie Rowe and Daniella Santor all left the show as champions.

Although the show has an “AA” rating, which is the United States Equestrian Federation’s highest rating, it also has a fun atmosphere. It includes “themes” games, contests, costumes, and parties. Riders can decorate their team’s stable; dress themselves and their horses in elaborate costumes; form teams for “Color War” competitions and scavenger hunts, and much more.

The four girls range in age from 7 to 13. Two of the girls, Lucie and Charlotte Rowe, are sisters who live in Missouri and commute several times each year to train. Crystal Valentine commutes several times weekly from Naples, Florida to train. Local student Daniella Santor was unable to compete at the show due to a sprained ankle, but attended in an assistant role to help her teammates with specialized grooming and preparation for their classes.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my riders and our ponies,” said Gemini Brittany Pledger, who trains the girls. “These students train hard year-round to mentally and physically prepare themselves and their ponies for horse showing. It isn’t easy, but it’s rewarding when the big payoff happens. Everything came together. We had a very successful show.

The ponies all had consistent rounds; the riders all grew tremendously; and we had fun. Isn’t that inevitably what horse showing is all about?”

The team and individual awards were as follows:Individual Awards

Many will never truly know what it is like to live with a dis-ability. On October 19, the com-

munity will have an opportunity to help support those who struggle with one on a daily basis by participating in the Schott Communities’ “2013 Run, Walk & Roll.” The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help continue Schott Communities’ mis-sion – to create an environment of dignity and care where persons with physical and/or mental challenges are encouraged to grow in self-acceptance and independence.

More than 800 people are expected to participate in the timed 5K Run or the 1M Walk & Roll. The event will start on the cam-pus of the Schott Communities, in Cooper City, and wind through Southwest Ranches on a USTAF certified course. It includes children’s activities, raffles, visiting vendor booths, and a complimentary breakfast.

This is the fourth year that Dave Shula will co-chair the event with Andrew Almeida, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and defied his doctors’ predictions that he would never walk or speak.

“We are so excited to continue to see this

event grow with more sponsors and partici-pants,” said Shula. “Some of these runners are dedicated athletes who take part in similar events throughout South Florida. At this particular event, they have a chance to meet some of the extraordinary individuals who benefit from Schott’s many programs and services. They are glad to support such a worthwhile cause and help to make a dif-ference in their lives.”

Schott Communities is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1986 to address the needs of persons who are physically or intellectually challenged. Each month, over 1,000 adults with special needs pass through its doors for help. Some of Scott’s programs and services include: Art from the Heart: An Art Therapy Program, a Daily Adult Day Program, Crafts Classes, Counseling Services, Family Support Groups, Religious Education, and Sacramental Preparation.

Schott Communities is located at 6591 South Flamingo Road, in Cooper City. Interested runners should call Jerry at 954-434-3306 or visit www.schottcommunities.org. To register online, visit www.splitsecondtiming.com.

The final part of the top 10 causes of hair loss covers the last four main causes of hair loss and contin-ues to give ways to prevent, control and treat them. In the

last two parts, we learned how the normal hair growth cycle works and addressed the first six top causes for excessive hair loss: Telogen Effluvium, Hypothyroidism, Lupus, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Chemotherapy/Radiation and Hereditary Hair Loss.

If you missed the articles, you can read them in our website at www.bellissimomedical.com.

Here are the final four causes: 7. skin conditions of the scalp - An unhealthy scalp can cause inflamma-

tion that makes it difficult for hair to grow. Skin conditions that lead to hair loss include: Seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and fungal infections, such as ring-worm. Such conditions can cause the scalp to shed its skin; you may experience hormonal changes, or excessive oil in the skin. A physical exam of the scalp will help determine your condition.

What you can do: Use medicated shampoo, traditional medication or light therapy depending on the magnitude of the disease involved.

8. iron deficiency anemia - Women who have heavy periods or do not eat enough iron-rich foods may be prone to iron deficiency, in which the blood does not have enough red blood cells. Red blood cells transport oxygen to the cells located throughout your body, giving you the energy you need. Therefore when your body lacks red blood cells, the symptoms include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, headaches, difficulty concentrating, cold hands and feet, and hair loss. Simple, inexpensive blood tests can be taken to diagnose this common condition. Replacement of iron is necessary if tests indicate deficiency.

What you can do: Eat iron-rich foods such as beef, pork, fish, leafy greens, fortified cereals, and beans.

9. alopecia areata - 4.7 million people in the U.S. alone are affected by this autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks hair follicles. The cause of this disorder is unknown, but some speculate it may be triggered by stress or illness. The symptoms cause round, smooth patches of baldness on the scalp, eyebrows, or legs. Observing the pattern of hair loss can usually determine if you have Alopecia Areata. Blood tests for iron, ANAs, and hormone imbalance can be taken for other possible causes of hair loss.

What you can do: It can be treated with steroids injections. Rogaine and Platelet Rich Plasma may also help.

10. Excessive styling - Too much shampooing, styling, and dyeing can harm your hair. Heat, chemicals from keratin, straightening treatments, and hair dye cause the hair to break and fall out.

What you can do: Test this by using the pull test. Take a small handful of about 50 strands, pull gently, and check to see whether the hair that comes out has bulbs on the ends. Remove the source of trauma and let the area affected recover.

If your hair loss condition hasn’t improved and has been affecting your confidence, it is important to see a functional medicine doctor. The sooner treat-ment is started, the better the chances are for improving your growing season. A Functional Medicine Doctor takes a whole-patient approach, seeking to ferret out the actual cause of your hair loss, working in partnership with you to outline the best approach.

As stated in the previous parts of this series, Bellissimo Medical now offers through the Hair Restoration Institute the latest in hair restoration through a mini-mally invasive technology called Neograft. The Davie police athletic league’s 2nD Annual Comedy Night is a chance to laugh a little, while helping a good cause. It will be held

on October 24, at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s Improv Comedy Club, in Hollywood. All of the ticket proceeds will benefit the Davie Police Athletic League and its programs.

“We invite the public to join us for a great night of fun, while helping to keep the kids in our community off the streets,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL.

“The money raised will help us provide low cost or free pro-grams, so everyone can attend. Every kid has the potential to get into trouble and we offer them a safe place to hang out.”

The event will feature comedian Deen Napolatano, who is a throwback to the great comedians of yesteryear, but with a modern twist. When he tells stories, he makes the audience feel as if they have been through the experience themselves. He has been seen in a variety of television shows, such as Heroes, The Shield, and What About Brian.

The Police Athletic League of Davie Inc. (Davie PAL) is a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educa-tional, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. Over 600 kids of all income levels are enrolled in basketball, tutoring, boxing, mentoring and a variety of other programs and activities.

The PAL basketball league, for ages 7 to 15, offers play-

ers an opportunity to learn a variety of basketball skills, including ball handling, dribbling, passing and more. PAL also offers a high school basketball league, as well as a travel league for players, 7 to 17.

Students, in 3rd to 8th grades, can also sign up for after school tutoring. Children spend the first hour hav-ing play time and snack. After, certified teachers and volunteers help them with homework, answer questions, and prepare them for the FCAT. They visit the computer lab to work on reading and math skills and spend time in the garden. There is free bus service for children from Davie Elementary School. PAL is always looking for adults or students interested in tutoring.

Boxing is also popular. Beginners, age 7 to 20, can get in shape as they learn self-defense, discipline and team work. More advanced students can join the box-ing team, which gives them an opportunity to compete in national events and box with state and regional champions.

Davie PAL also offers a Youth Leadership program for teens. The kids run the program and select a board and council. They participate in service projects in the community and much more.

Davie PAL is located at 4300 S.W. 57th Terrace, in Davie. Comedy Night tickets range in price $30-$50 dollars for two people, with a two drink minimum. For information, call 954-321-2561 or visit www.daviepal.org.

Dr Samira Alempour answered some commonly asked questions about her practice

What are the ages of your patients? Our patients include infants, children, and adolescents We also have special training to comfortably treat patients with spe-cific and special healthcare needs

What services does your prac-

tice offer? Our practice offers comprehensive dental care and focuses on preventative treatment modalities and oral health education to prevent the formation of dental caries (cavities) We offer the latest state of the art technology, including digital (lowest radiation) x-rays and the highest qual-ity dental materials In addition to routine dental exams, we offer sealants to help prevent tooth decay by up to 90%, restorative treatment of cavi-ties, extractions, and counseling for early interven-tion of harmful childhood habits, such as thumb sucking

What is Dr. Samira Alempour’s background? Dr Samira Alempour moved to South Florida when she was 13 years old and has lived here ever since She speaks English, Spanish, and Farsi She is a published author and a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist Dr Alempour obtained her Dental Degree from Nova Southeastern University, where she continued on and earned her Degree in Pediatric Dentistry (specializing in the oral healthcare of infants, children, teens, and patients with special needs) She currently lives in Weston, with her husband, Robert, 15-month-old son, Riad, and their dog, Bailey the Boxer

What can patients expect when they visit the office? We treat each child as if they were our own Our staff has many years of experience working

with children and adoles-cents We build lasting and trusting relationships with our patients and their fami-lies The office has games, toys, televisions, and a toy tower of prizes in order to create a fun and inviting child-friendly atmosphere All of our patients are given prizes for their efforts and for being the wonderful patients that they are

Do you offer sedation dentistry? For children that have dental anxiety, we offer different types of sedation techniques to help them have a more pleasant dental visit These techniques include nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas), oral con-scious sedation, and IV sedation, which is adminis-tered by a pediatric anesthesiologist We employ the safest and most effective sedation standards by following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

Do you educate your patients? We believe that a team approach between the patient, parent, and dental staff is the key to a successful lasting smile! We take pride in educating patients and parents in the areas of cavity prevention, nutritional counseling, and oral hygiene

At what age should parents bring their children for the first time? One year of age is the ideal time to bring in your child for their first dental visit to establish a dental home, as is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Visits are compli-mentary for children under the age of two

Why is it important to bring children for early dental visits? Early dental visits cre-ate the concept of a dental home, where young patients can learn to trust their pediatric dentist and staff This helps to create familiar and com-fortable dental visits Also, early visits help detect cavities when they are small and more manage-able and therefore much easier to treat Another great benefit of early dental visits is to ensure that patients are brushing well and taking all the correct measures to prevent early childhood decay

At what age should children start brushing their teeth? The best time to start brushing is when the

first primary tooth erupts to ensure good oral health for all of the years to come We offer special infant tooth-brushes with unique handles to our patients for creating safe and healthy brushing habits from an early age

At what age should children start flossing? Flossing with parental supervision can begin as young as needed when the

space between a child’s teeth is tight and too small for a toothbrush to properly clean the area The benefits of flossing at a younger age help children to learn healthy habits early on and make flossing a part of their daily routine

At what age should children start getting fluo-ride? Fluoride use depends on the patient’s age and the patient’s risk for dental caries (cavities) The best way to determine if your child is ready for fluoride toothpaste under the age of two is by having a complete oral assessment by a pediatric dentist

Should parents limit juice and snacks? Juice and snacks rich in carbohy-drates can increase the risk for dental caries, and thus should be limited in fre-quency throughout the day The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recom-mends 4-6 ounces of juice per day and it is always best to dilute it with water and consume it at meal time

Is thumb sucking a prob-lem? Thumb sucking and pacifiers provide comfort and a sense of security for many babies Both are a common way to self sooth   If thumb sucking contin-ues beyond two to three years of age, it may cause malpositioning of the teeth and future discrepancies in the child’s bite Such habits

should be discussed with your pediatric dentist

At what age do most children start losing their teeth? Most children begin to lose their first tooth around the age of six, but every child is different and sometimes it is sooner or later than six years of age

Pediatric Dentistry of Weston is located at 2863 Executive Park Dr., Suite 101, in Weston. For information, call 954- 217-1121, visit www.westonkidsdentistry.com, or send an email to [email protected].

Whether you are looking for horse related items, crafts or a delicious break-fast, the 16th Annual Pancake Breakfast,

Tack Sale and Craft Show has it all. It will be held on November 3, at 10am, at Robbins Lodge in Davie.

The event is one of many ways that the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward helps to unite the horse community. Club members will be flipping pancakes, which will be available for $5 (all you can eat). More than two dozen vendors will sell new and used tack and horse related goods, as well as arts and crafts, such as candles, photography, soaps, pet goods, and baked goods. Proceeds from the event will go back into the club to cover its insur-ance cost, materials for community projects, fun shows and parade attire.

A full space (10X10 banquet table size) costs $20 and a half Space (5X5 card table size) costs $10. Exhibitors are responsible for bringing their own tables, chairs, canopies and all supplies needed for their display.

Established in 1979, the South Florida Trail Riders of Broward County is an organization of people of all ages and horses of all breeds. It offers something for everyone, whether they own a horse, know some-one who does, or hope to make one part of their family some day. Members are

dedicated to having fun. They are also devoted to horse and rider rights of safe passage by promoting designated horse trails.

The Trail Riders meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Davie Women’s Club to discuss events and rides. There are also guest speakers upon request. Members enjoy trail rides throughout Davie, as well as campouts almost every weekend from September to April. There are also rides and club events during the summer. Members participate in the Orange Blossom Parade, Holly Day Parade and Electric Light Parade. The group also has a Fun Show, Halloween Costume Ride, annual Christmas party, and more.

“I get so much enjoyment as a South Florida Trail Rider,” said President Tina West, who has been a member for six years. “It gives me the opportunity to appreciate why I am a horse owner. I have met so many other equestrians with the same love for the horse and I am proud to call the South Florida Trail Riders my family.”

Robbins Lodge is located at Hiatus Road, east of Flamingo Road and North of Orange Drive. For vendor registration and information, call Carol Olson at 954-791-7535. For information on the South Florida Trail Riders, visit www.flahorse.com/sftrb .

M ichael lockwooD, 17, is on his way to sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong,

Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many oth-ers. If everything goes as planned, he will soon become Troop 128’s next Eagle Scout.

He joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was in first grade and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as an exten-sive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages.

Michael decided on his project six years ago. During a visit to Math Igler Citrus Park in Davie, he met a woman who told him that she wished there was a swing set at the park for her handicapped grandson. He thought it was a great idea and made a mental note to build one for his Eagle Scout project.

Earlier this year, it was finally time to begin his project. He spent two months cre-ating an Eagle book. It contained a detailed explanation of his plans, which included a swing set, as well as two citrus trees and two park benches. He presented it to his Scoutmaster and then to the District board.

Once it was approved, the next chal-lenge was to raise $3,200 for the project. He reached out to family, friends and neighbors. He also made presentations to the Rotary Club, Soroptimist International and the

Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce.“When I explained how the project would

benefit the youth in the community, people were very supportive and willing to donate,” said Michael.

In August, more than 30 volunteers met at the park to begin the installations. The team included members of Michael’s Boy Scout troop and Archbishop McCarthy’s wrestling team, Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Councilmember Susan Starkey, and many others.

They planted the trees, which were donated by Bob Roth’s New River Grove Park, and refurbished the benches, which were donated by the Town of Davie. They also began the day long process of build-ing the swing set, which included digging holes, assembling the pieces, adding sup-port beams, pouring concrete and more.

“The process was fast, smooth, and organized,” said Michael. “I am grateful to everyone who came out to help.”

Once the concrete was dry, a small crew returned to add the swings, including a special one for handicapped children.

“As soon as the swings were ready, there was a long line of kids waiting to use them,” said Michael. “It was a great addition to the park.”

Michael still has a few steps left before he earns his badge. He needs to present the project to his Scout Master and then to the Scout Board.

Michael is currently a senior at Archbishop McCarthy. He hopes to attend North Georgia University, where he will study business and participate in the ROTC program. After he graduates, he plans to serve our country as an Officer in the Army and return to scouting as an Assistant Scout Master.

“Scouting has had such a large impact on my life and I want to give back to the program to help it grow,” said Michael. “I encourage other youth to join scouting to experience all it has to offer.”

Team sports can present many chal-lenges for kids with autism. Their parents often struggle to find appropriate exercise

activities for them. The 1st Annual Tee It Up Golf Event, sponsored by the Autism Society of Broward County, offers these children the opportunity to play golf in a safe and secure environment. It will be held on October 26, from 3:30pm to 7pm, at Cooper Colony Country Club, in Cooper City.

“The tournament gives these kids a chance to play golf and have some fun on the course,” said seventeen-year-old golfer Jared Barclay, who is organizing the tournament along with Hugh Keough, President of the Autism Society of Broward.

The free event is open to all teens and young adults on the autism spectrum. No experience is required. All of the participants playing the course will be assigned a student volunteer, who will caddy for them. They can either play nine holes or spend time in the Drive and Putt Skills Challenge. Registration is at 3:30pm and the golf-ers will start playing at 4pm. Each of the players will receive an award at the dinner, which begins at 5:30pm.

Jared got the idea for the tournament, while volunteering for Golfing Fore Autism. The Autism Society of Broward, Florida Junior Golf Council, and National

Alliance for Accessible Golf have been offering the program at the Cooper Colony Country Club for the past three years. On Friday nights, middle and high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorders buddy-up with student coaches to learn to play a game that can be enjoyed throughout a lifetime.

The program is run under the direction of PGA professional Gary Braeseke, who has been playing golf and teaching in the South Florida area for more than 20 years. Participants learn the physical mechanics of the golf swing, rules of golf, and golf etiquette. Some play nine holes, while others hit balls on the driving range. The teens who participate have an opportunity to build their self-confidence and social skills, as they exercise, make friends, and have fun. One of the golfers in the program, Erik Christensen, recently earned a spot on his high school golf team.

“I really like being out there and helping the kids,” said Jared. “It is so rewarding to see their improvement from week to week.”

To register for the tournament, visit http://vols.pt/dFu2mP or send an email to [email protected]. For information on the tournament, send an email to [email protected]. For information on Golfing Fore Autism, visit http://asabroward.org.

Members of soroptimist international of Davie recently gathered at the Grand Oakes Golf Club in Davie. They were joined by friends, family, former members, and

past presidents to celebrate the club’s 30 years of service. Davie Mayor Judy Paul, herself a former Soroptimist, also performed the annual installation of officers.

The following officers were installed: Kathy Blanton (President), Tammy Brandys (Vice President), Angie Krumennacker (Treasurer), Lorinda Craig (Assistant Treasurer), Lyne Lemire (Corresponding Secretary), Barbara Reitzma (Recording Secretary), Marie Ambrosino (Director), Sandi Katulka (Director), and Helen Ditter (Director). Past club presidents - Suellen Fardelmann, Barbara McCall, Joan Kovac, Mary Ann Taylor - were presented with a spe-cial Soroptimist pin recognizing their roles as founding members of the club.

Soroptimist is an international volunteer-service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The Davie chapter was founded in 1983. Approximately 25 mem-bers meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month, at noon, at Vienna Café in Davie. They participate in community service projects, as well as social events. The club always welcomes new members.

The Davie chapter began with a project to save Old Davie School from demolition and restore it as a museum of local history and a community center for Davie and area residents. Today, it sup-ports a variety of programs and community organizations within Davie and Broward County. It also supports the global outreach of Soroptimist International of the Americas around the world.

Some of the charities the club supports include: Project Stable, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, EASE Foundation, Stop Human Trafficking, HOPE Outreach Center, PACE Center for Girls Broward, Project Sierra, Wounded Warriors and more. The club has also served as a Partner in Education with Davie Elementary School for more than ten years.

Each year, the club also gives a Violet Richardson Award to a young girl, between the ages 14 – 17, for outstanding community service. The club also gives an annual Women’s Opportunity Award to a woman seeking educational/vocational skills to re-enter the work place. Recipients are usually single mothers seeking to become economically independent.

Dear Friend,

I want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstand-ing. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few

other things first.Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the middle.Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hos-pital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily mi-graines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiroprac-tor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say:

“Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symp-tom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL

“Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term over-all health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor.

You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 10/31/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAY-MenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIS-cOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInA-TIOn, OR TReATMenT.

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunder-standing about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee.

Our office is called Windmill Health center and it’s at 17160 Royal palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill professional plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. call Mylene, Johanna or Annie for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you.

For more information regarding our services please visit our web-site www.WindmillHealthcenter.com. If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at [email protected] – Rick Behar, D.C.

P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $37.

p.p.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

The university school Suns varsity football team gave the entire nation a sneak peak

at what they have to offer this sea-son, as they played the Homestead Broncos in an ESPN televised game on August 25. They dominated the Broncos for a 41-21 victory.

This is the fourth year that ESPN kicked off the high school football season with a weekend of live exhibi-tion games that featured some of the nation’s leading teams and recruits. It is the second consecutive year that the US Suns have participated.

“The players were extremely humbled and enthusiastic about the opportunity to represent their school, friends, and family members live on ESPN,” said Roger Harriott, Head Football Coach. “This has proven to be a memorable experience that’s certain to last them a life time.”

Harriott says that there were several players who stood out during the game.“Senior wide receiver Chris Taylor was the player of the game, hauling in three

touchdowns off of seven catches and 72 yards. Senior quarterback Sean White tossed three touchdowns (150 yards). Junior running back Jordan Scarlett rushed for 104 yards and posted a touchdown, while senior running back LaJuan Hunt added 39 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Defensively, senior cornerback Quincy Wilson had a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown; senior defen-sive end Richard Yeargin made three sacks and a blocked punt; junior defensive tackle Brandon Boyce added a sack; and senior linebacker Andrew Korakakos

made an interception.” In 2012, the US Suns were

undefeated District champions, Regional champions and Class 3A State champions. Harriott says that authentic senior leadership, as well as team camaraderie and chemistry, helped the team win its first state championship.

“Our motto, ‘Family, Tradition, & Excellence’ came to fruition last season, as the entire team (coaches, teachers, and parents included) com-

mitted to the global mission—which was to be exemplary role models and produc-tive citizens on and off the field.”

Harriott is determined to push his team even further this year.“The objective for this season is to win another state championship,” said

Harriott. “The ultimate goal is to exceed expectations by procuring a national championship. We were fortunate to assemble a game schedule that has attracted substantial attention based on its competitive strength. Various media sources have declared it the toughest schedule in the country. Therefore, the national championship is an achievable opportunity.”

Many of the players have already made commitments, including: Quincy Wilson (University of Florida), Sean White (Auburn University), Richard Yeargin (University of Notre Dame), LaJuan Hunt (Air Force Academy), Brandon Russell (Rutgers University), Ephraim Levy (Bryant University), Emmanuel Soto (Air Force Academy), Chris Taylor (Duke University), and Andrew Dirocco (Tulane Unviersity).

In an effort to reDuce class sizes in math anD english, Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches recently built a new 8,000 square foot 21st Century Classroom above the existing locker

room. It is all part of a school wide effort to ensure that students are well prepared for colleges and universities.

“In four short years, our campus has gone from quality Catholic education with spotty internet service to an Apple Distinguished School,” said Principal Richard Jean. “Our students will now also have the advantage of learning in our 21st Century Classroom, which will help them become effective global citizens of tomorrow and agents of positive change.”

Over 200 people attended the dedication, blessing and ribbon cutting for the classroom. The dedication mass and blessing were presided over by Archbishop of Miami Thomas Wenski. To his surprise, he was the namesake of the classroom: Archbishop Thomas Wenski iCatholicEd .

The McCarthy flexible learning space has a capacity for 200 students. It was specifi-

cally designed with foldable glass walls. In a matter of minutes, it can be trans-formed from four classrooms into one. The space is equipped with leading active learning solutions, which promote mobility and flexibility, as well as seamless integration with technology.

Mike Ambrosino, Regional Education Leader, Florida & Caribbean for Steelcase Education Solutions, which worked on the project, said “This innovative space created by McCarthy is a reflection of their ambition to deliver absolute

student success in an environ-ment that facilitates new types of learning, new types of learn-ers, and above all transition and change.”

Goals for future growth include remodeling the locker rooms, adding a pool and ten-nis courts, and construction of a parking garage.

Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School is located at 5451 South Flamingo Road, in Southwest Ranches. For information, visit www.mccarthy-high.org or call 954-434-8820.

Drapery for your home is the final touch to complete your décor. It is normally the last aspect on interior design that homeowners consider. Daily, I design

for clients who have lived for seven years without a single window covering. Some want a minimalistic design for a clean look, while others want layers of fabric to exude luxury and comfort. Whatever your style, we can design it.

What can custom drapery do for you? ▸ The fabric is like art on your windows. ▸ Adds texture to the room. ▸ Completes the décor by bringing the wall color, furniture and floor together. ▸ Enhances the ambiance by adding fabric, which insulates, plus adds dra-

matic appeal. ▸ Complements blinds that have a more straight line look. Drapery allows

you to add color when you have neutral blinds. Go crazy. Have fun! Look at the designs we recently

installed. Custom drapery must address the following:

▸ Perfect proportion - With 23 years of experience in window coverings, we know what works and what does not.

▸ Combine the architectural elements in the room. - The dining room we designed had arches and curved elements. To continue the flow of the architectural elements, we combined swags and arched cornices. Curves in a room are sexy and make for a very comfortable,

elegant feel. With a contemporary design, I focus on more angular designs. ▸ Combine fabrics and textures. - We have thousands of fabrics for you to

see and touch. This is important, because you want to be comfortable with those fabrics around you. We take the fabrics to your home, so we see how it looks in the natural lighting of your space to ensure that the color and texture are perfect. It is very important to see the fabric in your space. Also, having 1000’s of samples to select from ensures that you get the best pos-sible choice for your home.

▸ Add excitement with trim. - Trim is the jewelry. There is simple to ornate. It is the perfect opportunity to bring in a contrast color and add detail that is all about exclusive custom design.

▸ Fit your budget. - Custom drapery is available for all budget levels. You need to let your designer know what your budget is and we can design using fabrics that will keep within the limits of your budget. A great look for any window is medallion hung panels. (see dining room picture). It suits any

type of décor, from modern to traditional. The best way to know what you are getting is to visit

the showroom. See the quality for yourself and meet with the designers to evaluate their expertise. Draperies hang in your home for years and you need to know that you have the best drapery designer working for you.

You imagine and we design. Stop by our 4,000 sq ft showroom to view the many options open to you.

Over the last five DecaDes, fluoriDe has been added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavi-

ties in these communities, as well as a 50% reduction in the dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still the dental com-munity searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to

those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s, but has not been tested for use in humans for the pur-pose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity forma-tion. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction.

What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children. In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years.

Of course, with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products such as mints, mouthwash and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum.

Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae!!

My previous articles have aDDresseD the challenges of buyers who may be affected by the recent mortgage rate hikes.

In spite of what has been written in the newspapers and blogs, along with what has been reported on the local and national news, buyers are still waiting to see if interest rates will come back down or prices will drop. Though no one can guarantee where rates will be in a few months, waiting is not a good strategy.

Even though interest rates are still historically low, most experts believe that rates may actually move higher. The Mortgage Bankers Association, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the National Association of Realtors are in unison projecting that rates will continue to climb. With home prices increasing and interest rates projected to also increase, the cost of buying a house could quickly increase rather dramatically.

Not surprisingly, a recent study by the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University revealed: “Even after the dramatic loss of equity and the high foreclosure rates, the early evidence suggests that people seem to believe that, over the long run, owning is still preferable to renting…The long term cultural preference for owning seems to have weathered the recent housing crisis.”

The study went on to state: “Moreover, the finding that younger renters and owners are more likely than their older counterparts to expect to own bodes well for the future of the housing market.”

Based on the fact that most people are still chasing the American Dream of homeownership, it baffles me that buyers continue to wait or renters continue to rent. Understanding that circumstances may drive you to rent, I would strongly urge you to check with your mortgage broker or bank to see whether or not you could qualify to go ahead and make that purchase.

I can put you on auto-notification which will alert you as to any and all active homes in your area and price range as soon as those properties hit the MLS sys-tem. I still have friends who are thinking about remodeling versus purchasing a larger home. I have tools that will help you decide whether or not that is the right direction for you and your family to take.

The market is shifting. As mortgage rates continue to rise, buying power will be affected, which may cause a slight slow-down in our marketplace. Therefore, this would be the best opportunity for you to take a look at your current housing situation to see whether or not it is time for you to make a move.

Please allow me to be your resource. I will exercise objectivity to help you make the best decision for your current situation. There have been times where I have encouraged people to move or encouraged them to hold on.

I am more interested in developing and maintaining a lifelong relationship with my clients. Lately, I have been showing property to the grown children of my life-long clients. This has been fulfilling, rewarding and a real testimony of my dedication to my clients – long term.

I look forward to serving you, your friends, family and co-workers.

This year, a strange event will take place. the first day of Hanukkah is Thursday, November 28th. If this date sounds a bit familiar, it is because it is also

Thanksgiving. So for those who celebrate these two holidays, it will be a double celebration. Turkey and latkes anyone?

Now as a family law attorney, my thoughts went in a different direction when I became aware of this rare occurrence. I am sure that there are several divorced couples who have a time sharing schedule in place which grants one parent time with

the children on Thanksgiving and the other parent time on Hanukkah. Now when family law attorneys draft an Agreement, they try and anticipate every possible situation, so that future litigation can be avoided. I can, however, assure you that this would not have been a situation which would have been anticipated.

You may be wondering, “How do they resolve this obvious conflict in schedul-ing?” I don’t know that I have an absolute answer to this situation. Sound logic would suggest that since Hanukkah is eight days and Thanksgiving is only one,

the one day holiday should take precedence. Unfortunately, sound logic does not always prevail. The hope is that two mature parents can

resolve it between themselves and avoid any unneces-sary conflict. Of course, that is also not always the case.

Today, when couples who have minor children divorce,

they enter into a Parenting Plan. This document clearly spells out

the time sharing arrangement as well as the responsibilities of both

parents. Holidays are generally equally divided based upon odd or even years. As an example, Mom may have Thanksgiving in even years and Dad in odd numbered years. The same division applies for most of the major holidays.

Winter break, which includes Christmas and New Years, gen-erally gets divided in half, with Christmas Day being the day of exchange. This allows both parents time with the children, either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Of course, some parents would rather have Christmas Eve every year and if the other parent does not object, it usually can be worked out. This, however, does prevent a parent from travelling out of town for the Christmas vacation and therefore some parents would rather alternate from year to year. This schedule is included in the Parenting Plan. If no changes are made by agreement, it will be the schedule to be followed, until there are no more minor children

A judge recently told a client of mine that the Parenting Plan should just be a guide and should not be without some flexibility. Parents, who can assist each other along the way, will have happier and healthier children. Hopefully those Parents who look at their schedule this year and have the Hanukkah/Thanksgiving conflict will realize that fighting over this once in a lifetime event is not worth the time, the money and the aggravation.

One in eight women will get breast cancer. The good news is that the death rate from breast cancer has dropped about 2 percent per year since 1990, thanks to earlier detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease. Our unique approach to breast cancer is born out of the belief that women should play an active role in their healthcare by asking questions, discussing treatment alternatives and working with their healthcare team to determine their best options.

Breast Cancer EpidemiologyA gene can develop an abnormality that changes how the cell works. The most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene. There are other hereditary causes of breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genes can be inherited from either parent. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, high-risk women can be tested to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes. However, genetic testing is done only when definitely indicated by a personal or a strong family history. Genetic testing might also be used to determine if a woman who has already been diagnosed with breast cancer is at an increased risk for a breast cancer reoccurrence or ovarian cancer.

Breast Cancer Treatment OptionsRecognized for its state-of-the-art treatment capabilities, Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center has earned a three-year/full accreditation designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) by the American College of Surgeons. A range of treatment options is available to patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer: surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and clinical trials, to name a few. Cleveland Clinic’s team of breast care specialists will help to determine the best treatment plan based on type of breast cancer, size and location of the tumor, disease stage, lab test results, and a patient’s overall health.

Women’s Imaging CenterCleveland Clinic Florida’s accredited Women’s Imaging Center provides state-of-the-art screening in a soothing environment. The Center makes early and accurate detection a priority, offering digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast CAD (computer aided detection). Both Weston and West Palm Beach locations have been designated Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The Centers are part of an elite group in Florida to achieve this level of excellence. Only three percent of the state’s nearly 500 ACR-accredited centers are recognized as breast imaging centers of excellence.

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Multidisciplinary TeamOur team includes fellowship trained breast surgeons, oncologists, plastic surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists, as well as nurses and a Breast Navigator who work collaboratively to treat patients with breast cancer. They are also the first in the world to use laser assisted angiography to determine if there is enough healthy tissue to proceed with reconstruction immediately after a mastectomy. This revolutionary breakthrough reduces complications.

We have counseleD hunDreDs of clients through the years, and the most significant mistake that homeowners make when faced with a foreclosure case is to wait until the last minute to contact a

knowledgeable and experienced attorney. Many homeowners think that just like fixing a leaky faucet at home, they can easily defend themselves in a foreclosure proceeding and save their home. Here are several important reasons why you should not try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense.

Florida’s new speedy foreclosure law (House Bill 87) makes it far easier for lenders to get families out of their homes. Under the new Florida law, the bur-den has now been placed on homeowners to prove that the bank does not have the right to foreclose, instead of the bank being required to prove that they are entitled to a foreclosure. Homeowners will have about 20 days to organize their evidence and present that proof to the court, whereas before they had months or years to develop their case against the lender. Some of the legal defenses to a foreclosure are highly technical, constantly chang-ing, and require specialized knowl-edge. Homeowners are not equipped to tackle the chal-lenges presented by Florida’s speedy foreclosure law without the guid-ance of an attorney.

Florida leads the nation not only in completed foreclosures from April 2012 to March 2013 (according to CoreLogic), but also has the largest backlog of fore-closure cases. The district courts are doing everything in their power to “flush” foreclosure cases out of the court system as quickly as possible. The “rocket docket” system, implemented in many jurisdictions to dispose of hundreds of fore-closure cases daily, is just one means of accomplishing this goal. Courts are also randomly setting cases for trial that are simply not legally ready for trial, or not

“at issue.” Unsuspecting homeowners that are unprepared to defend their case, or that fail to seek a timely continuance of trial, find themselves forced to accept a final judgment of foreclosure, with an auction sale date 30-60 days later.

Preparation is the most important step you can take right now. Your timeframe to save your home has been SHORTENED by our legislature. Organize all your closing documents, every bank statement, every payment, every communication you’ve had with the bank, and contact experienced attorneys like those at The Arcia Law Firm. This way you will be able to know what lies ahead, so you can work with your attorney and ensure that you are defended quickly and properly.

The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent many homeown-ers in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, don’t try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense

Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team.

Foot, ankle anD leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small

number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.

Growing pains are often seen in children who are exces-sively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only

cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night.

Leg pain is most commonly felt during activity. It is also felt at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be felt. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Children that are sedentary, may become overweight.

Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight lessen or eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast may be necessary to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence.

An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. We have seen and treated more than a thousand of these chil-dren with this problem with excellent long-term success.

”I am here for a ‘caDillac’ consulta-tion,” said Mrs. Jones. “My friend had it done and now she drives without glasses!”

I smiled and, being an ophthalmologist, I knew exactly what Mrs. Jones was referring to – CATARACTS! “Alright, let’s talk about those

‘cadillacs’ of yours,” I said.

What Is A Cataract? The eye houses a natural crystalline lens that

functions as a lens inside a camera. It focuses light on the back part of the eye, called the retina. Due to age, medications, and diseases, the natural lens starts to lose its clarity. The lens must be clear in order to focus light properly onto the retina. If the lens has become cloudy, this is called a cataract, and the vision starts to become blurry. The only way to permanently treat this situation is with cataract extraction.

During cataract surgery, a small, self-sealing incision is cre-ated on the surface of the eye with a blade. Next, a high-energy ultrasonic probe is used to soften and break up the cataract into smaller pieces, which are then suctioned out of the eye. This step is called phacoemulsification. A foldable, artifi-cial intraocular lens is then carefully placed in the eye through the same incision and allowed to unfold inside the eye. The incision is sealed without the need for sutures.

The LaserThe FDA-approved Alcon LenSx Femtosecond laser allows us to perform blade-

less cataract surgery. Laser cataract surgery elevates micro-incision cataract

surgery to the next level by increasing the accuracy of the proce-dure for patients desiring an enhanced refractive outcome, while reducing treatment time.

The LenSx Laser offers a more precise way of mapping the eye, providing the surgeon with the images and data needed to plan and perform surgery. Each incision will be customized for your eye and programmed into the LenSx Laser. This level of precision is unattainable through traditional surgical methods.

In addition to accurate mapping of the eye, many of the most challenging aspects of traditional cataract surgery are performed with the LenSx Laser, rather than by hand. For example, the fem-tosecond laser eliminates some of the need for handheld surgi-cal blades and the amount of time an ultrasonic probe is used to break up the patient’s cataract prior to its removal. This allows for more precision and faster healing time. The use of the laser also allows a more accurate centration of the artificial intraocular lens, which is critical for the best visual outcome.

When you choose the LenSx laser approach, you will enjoy the benefits of: ▸ A bladeless, advanced procedure ▸ A comfortable, relaxed setting ▸ A truly premium surgical experience

When a cataract is removed, in its place, an intraocular lens implant (IOL) is surgically inserted into the eye to improve vision. In the next issue, we will discuss the different types of IOL implants that are available. Stay tuned!

The browarD sheriff’s office is committeD to public safety and enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Broward County. For the most part, people

interact with law enforcement when they are in need of immedi-ate help. While emergency response is an important part of the job, community involvement, partnerships and collaboration efforts are important as well.

Broward County is diverse - with people from many races, religions and cultures - and all those voices deserve to be

heard. One of the main focuses of my administration is building a stronger part-nership with all of our communities, and I feel this can only be accomplished by recognizing, valuing and respecting our differences and shared concerns. With that in mind, I have assembled a Community Outreach team to help bridge the gap between our enforcement perspective to public safety and the needs of the community. I know Broward County residents have concerns and suggestions to help improve the quality of their neighborhoods, and I want to hear them.

The Community Outreach team is a crucial part of the two-way street of com-munication that can enhance public safety. The unit is comprised of sworn law enforcement deputies and civilians who are diverse in backgrounds and skills and provide valuable crime prevention information to our residents in their native language. Serving as a liaison between the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the community, one of their main goals is to acquire valuable feedback and sugges-tions that can strengthen our relationships with the community and enhance the public’s trust in law enforcement. Utilizing a proactive approach, this group is connecting with residents one-on-one by providing the attention deputies some-times cannot offer because they are responding to their next call.

Every day, members of the team attend various events, from homeowners’ association meetings to annual celebrations, to discuss important educational and crime prevention information offered by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. They also provide information about free services and community involvement oppor-tunities available to all Broward County residents, such as the Citizens Academy, child car seat inspections, the vacation home watch program, Operation Medicine Cabinet and Shred-A-Thon programs.

Public safety requires involvement from the community, and the efforts of the Community Outreach team are ensuring that we are keeping the lines of commu-nication open. Public awareness of BSO’s initiatives can help build a foundation of trust and support; likewise, BSO’s awareness of community concerns will help strengthen relationships and build a culture of positive growth. I want every mem-ber of our community to know that they have my attention, my ear and my respect.

For more information about the Department of Community Outreach or services offered by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, visit www.sheriff.org.
