W ould you like a garden filled with beautiful flowers, luscious vegetables, fresh herbs and butterflies - but no weeds or hard work? If so, it’s time to try Square Foot Gardening (SFG), a simple system that will save you time,

water, work and money!What Is It? A SFG is simply an above-ground garden, typically 4 ft by 4 ft. The

frame (box) is filled with a high grade potting soil or a mix of compost, peat moss and vermiculite. A wood grid is then placed over the top which assists in plant identification, spacing and planning.

The Benefits: A Square Foot Garden will out perform a conventional garden because of the high-grade media and good drainage. The high density planting conserves space, labor and eliminates most weed problems. There is no heavy digging so your kids can participate and enjoy a great family project!

The Basics: Locate your garden in a convenient spot that gets at least 6 hours of sunshine daily. For example, adjacent to your kitchen would be ideal for herbs and veggies. For multiple gardens, place the boxes 3 feet apart to create walking/ harvesting aisles. The grid will subdivide the garden into 1 foot squares. Plant a different flower, vegetable or herb

crop in each square foot. Depending on the type of plant, you will use 1, 4, 9 or 16 per square foot. When you finish harvesting a square foot, add compost and replant it with a new and different crop.

- 6 to 10 p.m., at the Davie Fire Rescue Administration, 6901 Orange Dr. The Town of Davie Fire Rescue Department is offering monthly CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) classes to the general public so they will know who to call and what to do until help arrives if they ever find themselves in an emergency situation. By DeBBy TeIchDavie’s Burrowing Owls have a New Place to call home

T he Town of Davie is well-known for protecting the envi-ronment, including its trails, parks, and open space. When Vice Mayor Susan Starkey learned that several burrowing

owls had decided to call Davie home, she worked tirelessly and passionately to protect them as well. The Davie Town Council recently dedicated the open space at SW 26 St. and Flamingo Rd. for the purpose of preserving and protecting burrowing owls. Owl’s Lookout Park is one of the first of its kind in Florida.

The burrowing owl gets its name because it burrows into holes in the ground to live, instead of nesting in the trees, as most birds do. The owl makes its own holes, but more commonly lives

in abandoned prairie dog and squirrel holes. When the owl sees some-thing approaching its home, it bobs up and down a few times, and then dives into its bur-row. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission lists Florida’s burrowing owls as a species of special concern, facing a a moder-ate risk of extinction in the future.

Owl’s Lookout Park was already home to eight burrowing owls when Vice Mayor led the effort to build three artificial burrows.

She enlisted the help of over 65 participants, including students from Indian Ridge Middle School, town staff, the South Florida Audubon Society, Project Perch and members of Broward County. The day after the park was completed, it had already attracted a new family of owls. “My vision of maintaining this site as open space and protecting the burrowing owls is a reality,” said the Vice Mayor. “The Davie Town Council is proud of the efforts made to create a safe environment for the owls that will be enjoyed by our residents and their children.” The Vice Mayor encourages the entire community to visit the park to observe and enjoy the owls from a safe distance.

M ichelangelo, creator of the statue of David, and the ceiling frescos of the Sistine chapel, once said “Who could be so blind, as to not see that the skin is more beautiful than the garment in which it is clothed?” His statement is

much deeper than simply a superficial visual beauty appraisal, opinion or preference. His words, touch upon the philosophical truth that our sense of beauty ties into the core of our soul, which is the very energy of life and love, and therefore, the essence of our humanity. Our skin shows the vibrant life of our humanity, or the lack of vital-ity we are suffering. Just about everything that we encounter shows through our skin. Our thoughts, emotions, diet, and environment, impact our skin, but by far the single most prevalent root cause of skin issues today is stress. Skin oil imbalances, dull skin, dark circles around the eyes, allergies and rashes, are just a few examples of prob-lems that are commonly related to stress. You can also ask anyone with acne, rosacea, hives, or any of dozens of other skin conditions, and they will almost certainly tell you that not only is stress itself a trigger to their condition, but it also increases the skin’s sensitivity to other triggers like dietary components, sun exposure, etc.

If you have never considered your stress as something that needs to be addressed, now is an excellent moment to start. First, we have to accept that we have total con-trol over our habits, and our stress is a direct result of them. Second we must identify the areas of our life that are out of balance and producing stress. Are we neglecting our need to give love? Are we focusing only on negatives? Are we holding on to an impossible ideal? Are we neglecting ourselves? And third, we must regain balance in

the area, if you have a negative focus, get yourself into the habit of consciously forc-ing yourself to find 10 good things in every situation or person you come across and dislike. Over time, exercising this mental muscle, your balance will improve, and we will be able to automatically see a more complete picture of our circumstances, seeing opportunities along with changes, and solutions with problems. Always keep perspective by reminding yourself of the bigger picture of your life. Uncomfortable changes today will mean very little when we are sitting at the beach with our grand-children and look back upon the full scope of our life. Some sources of stress, we can simply avoid. Perhaps it means deciding to not watch the news, to leave earlier for work avoiding rush hour traffic, or to relocate to a new office away from the relent-less gossip. But even if the source of stress is beyond our control, we can always find some relief in stabilizing our morning or evening. A regular routine such as a lengthy personal care routine in the morning with exercise, cleansing, skin care, beauty, and dressing prior to our breakfast can not only set you up for a great vibrant day, but also help you feel stable, even when much of the rest of the day seems to be chaotic. Knowing what to expect during the process gives us assurance, and with it a perspec-tive that is more suitable for solving issues. Another area we can usually influence is

our surroundings, where we can add uplifting music, plants, scenery, and relaxing scents, helping us to feel the energy and inspiration of life as we work. We can priori-tize, taking care of the bigger pieces in our agenda and delegating some of the things

we either dislike, or cannot finish. Always address the issues that you must, head on. Perhaps the single most important and controllable aspect that is a major con-

tributor to the stress we feel is the balance in the use of our time. Since the downturn in the economy, more is required of the labor force, and less is granted. The result: our balance can be significantly off. The time we spend at work must be in balance with the time we spend learning, playing and resting. The time we spend addressing problems, must be in balance with the time we spend exploring opportunities. And the time we spend tending to the needs of others, even our families, must be in bal-ance with the time we use to tend to ourselves. Too often, people feel a disconnection from the truly important people in life, along with a sense of diminished self-value, simply because they are not spending enough time loving themselves. You may have heard that we cannot love others if we don’t love ourselves, and it may have sounded very cliché, but there is much truth to it. Not just because it makes sense that you can-not give what you don’t have, but because dedicating time to you, centering, relaxing, and pampering yourself allow you to feel strong and happy, and from that place of strength and happiness is where we can help others most. Pampering yourself brings abundance, joy, and additional depth to the relationships in your life.

The next time you are feeling overloaded, overworked, and underappreciated, remember the therapeutic value of pampering yourself as an immediate solution. Even if it is something small and inexpensive, like a sea salt bath with aromatic candles and your favorite book, the therapeutic value can be immense. Having some-thing larger, like a full body massage or anti aging facial, where someone who cares and knows what they are doing is touching you with healing hands is ideal. Davie Dance Studio celebrates the Grandeur and Diversity of IndiaBy DeBBy TeIch

L ast month, Davie’s Rhythms School of Dance provided an exciting look into a little known part of Indian culture. More than 60 dancers

from the school performed “Festivals of India” at the Hollywood Performing Arts Center. The high-energy performance was filled with colorful sights, sounds and intricate dances. It was the school’s first large-scale production, focusing on the vast symbolism of India.

The 2 ½ hour musical was tied around the univer-sal theme of “strength in diversity.” The show was staged through the eyes of a young American girl, who wanted to learn more about India’s soul and spirit. She traveled through different parts of India to get first hand information, attending the various festivals and learning about the symbolisms in all the rituals. The show brought India’s culture to life, blending diverse music, dance scores, small skits and detailed narrations.

India’s folk dances typically express joy and are performed to celebrate every possible occasion, like the arrival of seasons, birth of a child or a wed-ding. “Festivals of India” showcased classical, con-temporary and folk dance, including such styles as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Mohiniyattam and folk dances like Garba, Bhangra, Kerala folk, Tamil Folk and more. Performers wore traditional clothing and danced to music which represented the many regions and languages of India. Ranjana Warier, owner of the Rhythms School of Dance, is hoping that the show helps to build understanding among cultures.

“The purpose is to help educate and to explain this in a fun-filled way,” said Warier.

Rhythms School of Dance is a training center for Indian Performing Arts which promotes the artistic traditions of India through professional training and student performances. Warier is a classically trained dancer who has been choreographing and staging an average of 12 performance arts based shows every year since 2004. In Jan. and Feb. of last year, she worked with the Town of Davie to teach community participants Indian folk dances and drama. They performed in Feb. at the Town of Davie theatre in the Pine Island multi-purpose center and received rave reviews. She also worked with the South Florida Hindu Temple to stage “Dances of India,” which was also well received.

There are many people of Indian or Indian/Caribbean origin who reside in South Florida. Warier says that the diversity of India is very hard to com-prehend, even for people who originate from this area. She hopes that her projects will help everyone gain a deeper understanding of their culture and help the Asian-Indian community re-connect with their roots. She recognizes that many of these lessons are universal. “The Broward County population is con-tinually becoming more diverse,” said Warier. “The lessons learned about the tolerance, understanding and respect for diversity are universally applicable on any demographic.”

After working in a corporate practice for seven years, he decided it was time to open his own animal hospital. “Our goal is to provide an excellent experience for both the patient and owner, whether it is a simple vaccine or a complicated medical case,” said Dr. Weman.

Dr. Weman understands that his client’s pets are like a part of their family. “When there is a problem, the owners are usually worried and concerned,” said Dr. Weman.

“At Everglades Animal Hospital, our clients are part of the treatment plan. We spend as much time as needed to make sure that they are fully educated. We give them the tools they need in order to make informed decisions and take care of their pets once they leave the hospital. We have found that an educated owner always has much more successful results.”

The state-of-the-art hospital has two examination rooms; a pharmacy; treatment area with laboratory; surgical suite; grooming area and isolation area. It has a sophis-ticated computer system which is linked, allowing complete access to patient infor-

mation from any computer. There are also cameras throughout the hospital in order to monitor patients at all times. The paperless hospital is also

“Green,” so it is doing its part to help the environment.

The hospital’s set up and equip-ment allows Dr. Weman and his staff to focus their efforts on the patient and client instead of on paperwork. It has digital radiology equipment so x-rays can be read in less than a minute. If necessary, a digital image can eas-ily be sent to a specialist. It also has an in-house lab, eliminating the need to send out bloodwork, urine and other samples. In only 15 minutes, results are ready and Dr. Weman can begin recommending a course of treatment. In the event that a patient requires sur-gery, all procedures are done at the hospital, where the patient is comfortable and familiar. The hospital uses Sevofluorane anesthesia, which is used on humans and is safer for its patients. The patient recovers in a central location, where the entire staff can keep an eye on him. Vital signs can be monitored on a system that is visible from several locations in the hospital.

Dr. Weman chose his staff carefully. All of them are compassionate and knowl-edgeable with at least five years of experience in pet nursing. They have been trained to fill every role, from technician to receptionist. They also speak English and Spanish fluently.

Dr. Weman recognizes that times are difficult for many of his clients. a fter a long search, the Town of Southwest Ranches finally has a place to call home. The new building, located at 13400 Griffin Rd., will become the first

official Town Hall on Town-owned property. The Town’s offices are currently housed in a modu-

lar building on leased property from the South Broward Drainage District. Over the years, meetings have also been held in local schools and restaurants. Council members have considered many sites for a permanent home. When the New Hope Church decided to sell one of its two cam-puses, they felt that it was the perfect site for a Town Hall. The new building, which cost $1.875 million, is approxi-mately 10,500 sq. ft. and sits on two acres of land. Town Council and staff expect that the new Town Hall facility will better serve the needs of the public by providing Town services with an expanded BSO presence.

Although the space will require some minor repairs and renovations, the current layout meets most of the Town’s requirements. It will house the town administration offices, a town council meeting chamber and the Broward Sheriff’s Office District 9 police department. The Town is in the process of contracting with an architecture firm to design the renovations, which are expected to cost approximately $300,000. Renovations should be completed by the end of the calendar year.

Catherine Drake, who has lived in Southwest Ranches for seven years, is excited

about the new building. “I think it is great that we will have our own Town Hall,” said Drake. “It will be very convenient to have all of the Town’s services located in one place.”

Davie Resident Uses CPR to Help Save His MotherWhen paramedics from the Davie Fire Rescue Department arrived at Lana Cargile’s home, she was not breathing and did not have a pulse. She had suffered a cardiac arrest. When Lana passed out, her husband immediately called 911 and then dialed his son, Tom, who lives in the same complex. Tom came rushing to his moth-er’s aid. cooper city BSO Offers crime Prevention Tips

T he Cooper City District of the Broward Sheriff’s Office frequently reaches out into the community to provide information that will keep its residents safe and prevent them from becoming victims. It distributes information at City

Commission meetings, home owners’ association meetings and schools, as well as in local newspapers and many other places. “Residential and vehicle burglaries are the most common property crimes that occur in Cooper City,” said Marvin Stoner, Commander of BSO of the Cooper City District. “They are also the most invasive to residents. If we educate our residents, they will be better able to protect themselves and their property.” The BSO offers the following prevention tips. Residential Burglaries

Residential burglaries in Cooper City usually occur during the day time hours when residents are at work. In most cases, burglars drive around a community look-ing for a home that appears to be unoccupied, with no vehicle in the driveway, news papers left out, etc. They park in the driveway, walk up to the door and knock. If the door is answered, they ask for a person and leave when told they have the wrong house. If no one answers, burglars will look in a window and upon seeing no one will move to the back of the house. Once in the rear of the house, they break out a rear sliding glass door or window and enter.

Residents are encouraged to call the Cooper City District Office immediately if someone comes to their door asking for an unknown person. Residents should also know that if their alarm system does not have glass breakage or a motion detector and the glass is broken, the alarm will not activate because the door or window was not opened.Vehicle Burglaries

Vehicle burglaries can occur at any time of day or night when a vehicle is parked in the driveway or in front of a home. The common denominator is that some object, even loose change in the astray, is visible. When residents park their vehicles or guests

visit their homes, they should remove any objects from the seats and never leave visible loose change. This is also a good practice when parking a vehicle in any parking lot.

Residents can assist their deputies by being vigilant. Any activity that does not look right should be reported. Any persons or vehicles in the area that appear suspi-cious should be reported. Residents know their neigh-borhoods well and should call the District immediately if they fell that a person, noise, car or anything else seems suspicious. Gas Station Burglaries

Another form of vehicle burglary on the rise in the tri-county area is occurring at gas stations. Individuals are taking purses from vehicles while the owners are at the gas pumps. Most of the victims are females. When they exit their vehicles to pump gas, they typically leave the doors open and their purses inside the vehicle. Thieves approach the side of the vehicle away from the pumps; open the door and steal the purse. The victim does not know the crime has occurred until they get back in the vehicle or look for their purse at a later time.

The BSO suggests that people remove the keys from the ignition and lock the doors when they exit the vehicle. They also caution that, whether the vehicle is locked or not, they should never leave purses or any other items in the open where they can be snatched by someone opening the vehicle door. The BSO suggests that women take their purses with them, especially if they leave the vehicle to go inside the station.

Davie Teens receive college Scholarships By DeBBy TeIch

L indsay Dale, 17, understands the importance of reaching out to others. Last month, she helped make college a little more affordable for two Davie teens.

Lindsay’s parents are the owners of Rexmere Village and Paradise Village, two affordable home communities in Davie. Many of the 3,000 residents have suf-fered during the economic downturn and she wanted to find a way to help. She decided to focus her efforts on the children. “I wanted to help the kids who live here during this recession when many people have lost jobs and families are struggling,” said Lindsay.

Last year, she developed the Live Love Learn Scholarship, a program exclusively for residents of the Village communities. Many of the children aspire to go to college, but cannot afford it. The scholarship awards a total of $10,000 each year to two resi-dents, one from each park. The winners are selected based on academic achievement, community involvement and character.

Lindsay raised a portion of the funds from four local businesses. She also recruited Davie Mayor Judy Paul to present the awards with her at a party attended by over 1,000 community residents. More than 50 residents applied for the scholarship. The award recipients, who each received $5,000, are Jessica Liles, 18, of Rexmere Village, and Nicholas Dungee, 17, of Paradise Village. Both students were selected, in part, because of their generous and ambitious attitudes. Liles, for example, almost single-handedly developed and maintained the residents’ library at Rexmere Village during her teenage years. “It was a great feeling to give these awards,” said Lindsay. “The students and their parents were so appreciative. I am excited to do similar projects!”

At the party, Lindsay also presented certificates to four residents who actively par-ticipated in the tutoring program that she launched last year for community children, ages 6 to 14. Honors students from Plantation’s American Heritage School are matched up with Rexmere Village and Paradise Village youngsters. The children receive tutor-ing in math, writing, study skills and languages – at no cost to the families.

L ast month, 20 teammates from Davie’s Broward Aquatics participated at the Florida Gold Coast Junior Olympics, held at the Plantation Central Park pool. The squad posted

the best Junior Olympic meet in team history. The team placed 6th overall as a team, only 12 points behind 5th Place Pine Crest. The girls placed 10th overall and the boys posted an impressive 4th place finish, only 16 points out of 3rd place.

Individually, Broward Aquatics swimmers were equally impressive, posting 72 percent Best Times. There were 17 new team records, with four teammates in the High Point Top 10--with one winner. Some of the highlights included: several Senior Championship Cuts; one new Sectional Qualifying time; two National Top 10 Recognition times, and one Florida Gold Coast record. In addition, the following teammates had 100 percent Best Times: Vanessa Comunale, Maggie Emary, Aleks Kuzjomkin, Nick McKenna, Remi Rif, and Erika Shuler.

The Senior teammates also added another great chapter to the 2010 Long Course season. The team swam to 70 per-cent Best Times; 2 new team records and 5 New Sectional Qualifying times. The following teammates had 100 percent Best Times: Dania Banks, Randall Funderburk, Jon Lubic, and Loury Rodriguez.

Broward Aquatics is a USS year round competitive swim team for swimmers of all ages and abilities. The program also includes high school swimmers, many of whom go on to swim

at the college level, as well as Master’s National Champion swimmers. The team uses the facilities at the Pine Island Community Center, which has an 8 lane, 50 meter x 25 yard pool.

Broward Aquatics currently has 80 registered swimmers; most live in the Davie-Cooper City area. Coaches teach them strokes, starts and turns for the four main swimming styles, including breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle. After the swimmers learn the proper techniques, they focus on swimming for longer periods of time at faster and faster speeds.

Head coach and team owner Rob Emary has been coaching for 26 years. He knows every swimmer in the program and is committed to providing the coaching and training necessary to help them reach their individual goals. Gigi Copa makes the 50 mile round trip drive from Pompano so that her son, Dillon, can train with Coach Rob. The fifteen-year-old started swimming in 7th grade and hopes to make his college team.

“Coach Rob has taught Dillon everything he knows about swimming,” said Copa. “He gives a tremendous amount and expects a lot from the kids in return. The kids want to be there and perform.”

In keeping with his passion for running and philanthropy, Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers will be running alongside participants as part of the Joe Jonas iWin 5k Fun Run/Walk. This run is just one of several unique family events that Joe Jonas and his own Change for the Children Foundation is hosting across the country to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. The Fun Run/Walk features a family friendly 5K and 1K option. Registration begins 6 a.m. and the Fun Run/Walk starts at 8 a.m., at NSU’s main campus at 3301 College Ave. “Special Olympics places great importance on youth involvement and understanding,” said Special Olympics Florida President Monty Castevens.

“There couldn’t be a better or more impactful ambassador for the Special Olympics move-ment to today’s youth than Joe Jonas.”

Participants may also compete in a fundrais-

ing challenge to win top prizes including meet-ing and running with Joe Jonas himself at the race. Proceeds from this event will benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Florida, which includes the athletes of Special Olympics Broward County. SOBC provides sports train-ing and Olympic-style competition to almost 800 athletes with intellectual disabilities in 22 sports, through the support of more than 40 Broward training programs. Through success-ful sports training and competition, Special Olympics athletes develop physically, socially, and psychologically. The positive experiences the athletes have in ongoing Special Olympics programs builds confidence and self-image, which carries into all aspects of their lives.

T he Starlight Children’s Foundation recently provided a group of seriously ill children and their families with a few

hours of relief from their constant worries as part of its Great Escapes program. More than 145 people attended the June 12 event at the Old Davie Schoolhouse.

The theme was “Pause and Play” and included fun activities like face painting, crafts, Bingo, ring toss, bean bag toss, a DJ dance contest and more. Sponsor California Pizza Kitchen provided pizzas, salad, pasta, drinks, and dessert. “The families we serve deal with serious illnesses on a daily basis,” said Sasha Moon, community development officer for Starlight Children’s Foundation/Florida office. “The Great Escape events give them an opportunity to forget about these illnesses.”

The Starlight Children’s Foundation orga-nizes a Great Escape every month for children, 3 to 18 years old, with chronic and life-threatening diseases like cancer, HIV/Aids, Sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy. The Great Escape events rotate throughout South Florida and have

included activities like ice skating and Back to School celebrations, as well as trips to the zoo, circus, movies, Everglades and more. They offer the entire family an opportunity to relax, spend time together, and regroup while someone else worries about the details. Migraine headaches cause disability, suffering, and loss of quality of life. As a result, they have been ranked among the top ten most disabling disorders for both sexes by the World Health Organization. Approximately 30 million people in the United

States suffer from migraine headaches, and about 75 percent are women. The majority of women who experience migraines are between the ages of 20 and 45. Medical research supports a strong link between hormones and migraines since migraine occurrence tends to be the same for both boys and girls until puberty, at which point there is a sharp increase in migraines among girls who begin menstruating. Moreover, migraine attacks tend to worsen in frequency and severity around the menstrual period. The good news is that the majority of migraine sufferers ben-efit from the treatment of bio-identical hormone therapy that is aimed at correcting hormonal imbalances. As a result, most women find that their headaches become less frequent or dis-appear completely.

Unbalanced estrogen, testosterone and progesterone can cause debilitating headaches and may be triggered by numerous factors, such as stress, fatigue, menopause, menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum and oral contraceptives. Unfortunately, many women are treated with birth control pills, pain relievers or both, which do not treat the underlying hormonal imbalance. In addition to a comprehensive medical history, a simple blood test may be all that is needed to determine a hormonal imbalance. Once an imbalance is determined, it is essential that the proper type of hormones and method of delivery be chosen to adequately treat the imbalance and improve migraines.

The type of hormone chosen, synthetic versus bio-identical, is extremely important. Bio-identical hormones exactly mimic your own body, molecule per molecule, versus their synthetic counterparts, with known cancer-causing agents within their chemical structure. The delivery method of the bio-identical hormone is paramount. It is key that the deliv-ery is constant with no high peaks and lows since these peaks and lows in hormones may trigger migraines. All methods of delivery, except that of pellet form, unfortunately give you inconsistent absorption of hormones. When you place a cream on the skin in our hot humid South Florida climate, how much are you exactly absorbing and what is wearing off? When you place the hormone in a liquid underneath the tongue or give an injection, you have rapid absorption immediately, but what is left to be absorbed the remainder of the day? The absorption rates with these methods are extremely unpredictable. Unpredictable absorption is unacceptable when trying to maintain constant hormonal balance.

i f you don’t know someone with breast cancer, consider yourself lucky and rare. In America, one in eight people are ultimately diagnosed with breast cancer. This can be scary to think about,

robotic Prostate Surgery: a Minimally Invasive Option to Treat Prostate cancer

p rostate cancer is the most common form of cancer for men in the United States. Each year, 200,000 men are

diagnosed with prostate cancer and approx-imately 30,000 men die from it. Prostate Cancer Symptoms

A patient with prostate cancer may experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Prostate can-cer that is more advanced may cause symptoms that include difficulty urinating, decreased force in the stream of urine, blood in urine, swelling in the legs, discomfort in the pelvic area and bone pain. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms develop, the disease is often incurable. Diagnosis

Physicians at Cleveland Clinic Florida can screen for prostate cancer by perform-ing a rectal exam and evaluating the results of a PSA test. “This test measures how much PSA, a protein essential to reproduction, is in a patient’s blood,” said Bassem Eldaif, MD, Urologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “A higher reading may serve as a warning sign of prostate cancer, although it may be raised due to some other benign condition of the prostate.” Radiation Therapy Treatment Options

Prostate cancer is one of the most treatable cancers if found and treated in its early stage. Options and prognosis depend on the type and stage of the cancer as well as the patient’s age and general health. In some cases, radiation therapy may be used to treat prostate cancer. In this instance, the patient may undergo either of two types of radiation treatment. With external beam radiation therapy, a beam from a machine outside the body is aimed at the patient’s tumor. The radiation treatment lasts a few minutes and is usually given five times a week for several weeks. A prostate cancer patient may also undergo brachytherapy, in which radioactive pellets, each the size of a grain of rice,is implanted into the prostate. Surgical Treatment Options

For some prostate cancer patients, surgery is the best treatment option. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a laparoradical prostatectomy, a minimally invasive procedure in which the surgeon removes the prostate gland by making button-hole incisions. Through these incisions, the surgeon uses a tiny camera and surgical instruments to conduct the operation and remove the prostate. Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Cleveland Clinic Florida also offers robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, which is another minimally invasive surgical procedure. This procedure enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small inci-sions with unmatched precision. A 3-D camera provides a magnified view from inside the patient while the surgeon controls a set of robotic arms from a nearby con-sole. The robotic arms mimic the movement of the human hands, wrists and fingers, providing surgeons an extensive range of motion and a precision that is difficult to reach through traditional surgery.

M embers of Temple Beth Israel are ushering in the Hebrew New Year in a new home. West Broward County’s oldest conserva-

tive congregation is inviting its Weston neighbors to experience everything the new synagogue has to offer. The shul is just minutes from Weston on the Sawgrass Corporate Parkway, just north of Ikea.

Rabbi Bater says he hopes the new location will draw new members, especially those from the large Latin and South American Jewish population in West Broward. The rabbi, originally from Argentina, is the only Spanish-speaking conservative rabbi in Broward County.

Rabbi Bater studied at the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aries. He completed his final year of rabbinical studies in Israel. Following his ordination, he became the spiritual leader at Beth Israel Synagogue in Aruba. During his four years there, he also served as Executive Director of the Union of Jewish Congregations of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Rabbi and his wife, Sonia, started their family while living in Aruba. Although they loved the island and the synagogue, they realized it was time to move on when their daughter Gali was ready to start preschool. The couple wanted a Jewish education for their children and Gali was the only Jewish child in Aruba. They decided to move to the United States.

Rabbi Bater accepted a position at Temple Beth Israel in September 2007. He and his family quickly became part of the South Florida Jewish commu-nity. Today, Gali attends kindergarten at the David Posnack Hebrew Day School, son Benjamin is in pre-school at the Jewish Community Center, and Sonia stays home with the couple’s newborn son, Tommy.

Since he joined the synagogue, membership has increased with many young families joining the congregation. Rabbi Bater says he credits this to the friendly atmosphere he has created at Temple Beth Israel. “We are working hard to make this a warm and welcoming congregation. I want everyone to feel welcome every time they come to synagogue. This should be your home away from home.”

One of the ways he has accomplished this is by creating different programs to appeal to all members of the congregation. “I believe a synagogue is a house of prayer, study and gathering,” shares Rabbi Bater. “I tried to follow this when coming up with innovative programs and ideas.”

Temple Beth Israel offers a variety of religious studies programs for all ages. Singing Chaverim is a Hebrew music program for parents and children, from babies up to age five. The synagogue also offers a traditional Music Together class under the direction

of Frances Ghitis. Children ages five through twelve can take part in a religious studies program where they will learn about Judaism and take Hebrew lessons. This twice-weekly program is directed by Idit Cohen, who is also a teacher at the David Posnack Hebrew Day School’s Upper School. Arlene Needleman leads the Talmud Torah program which prepares students for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah. For older students there is the Kadima youth group. Temple Beth Israel also offers a Hazak program for Seniors.

Rabbi Bater offers various educational programs for adults including his monthly Lunch & Learn, at which congregants discuss relevant topics over lunch. Once a month he hosts Rosh Chodesh for Women, a class which focuses on issues of interest to the female congregants such as the role of women in Jewish rit-uals today.

The Rabbi encourages congregants to be active participants in the synagogue. Volunteers help lead the Shabbat services. This includes Jessy Wald, a 16-year-old from Weston. The rabbi says she has a beau-tiful voice and often helps lead Kabbalat Shabbat, a lively Friday night Shabbat service featuring music. Once a month the temple hosts a special children’s service called Singing Shabbat.

Many of the synagogue’s programs marry reli-gious services with social programming, such as Havdalah Movie Night. After the Havdalah service, members stay to watch a movie with a Jewish theme followed by a discussion. Once a month, the temple hosts a Shabbat dinner for the entire congrega-tion. This often includes a special guest speaker or entertainment.

By far one of the synagogue’s most popular programs is the Latino Salsa Shabbat. “Every few months we do a Friday night service in Spanish, then everyone stays to enjoy a delicious Kosher Latin meal and entertainment,” explains Rabbi Bater. “We always get a huge turnout for this program, including many non-Spanish speaking people.”

Rabbi Bater believes the fact that he speaks Spanish is an added benefit for many congregants.

“It’s often easier for people to speak in their native tongue, especially when seeking advice or solace during difficult times.”

Rabbi Bater performs all rituals of Jewish life cycle events from baby namings to bar and bat mitzvahs to weddings and funerals. Temple Beth Israel is dedicated to Jewish traditions, customs, values and culture, and to making Judaism more meaningful in a family-friendly atmosphere.

r ecently, our state legislators passed significant changes to our child support statute. These changes will take effect on October 1, 2010. In Florida, child support is deter-

mined by Child Support Guidelines, which are based upon the net income of both parents. Pursuant to Florida Law, both parents have a financial obligation to minor children. Minor children are any children below the age of 18. Therefore, child support ter-minates upon the child’s 18th birthday. If, however, a child upon

turning 18 has not yet graduated from high school and is a full time student, then support can continue until graduation or his/her 19th birthday. This must, however, be stated in any agreement or final order of the court.

These are the changes which I believe are significant. Child support is based upon the net monthly income of both parents. Once the income is established, a child sup-port chart is used to determine the amount to be paid by each parent. Neither the par-ents, nor the Court, can deviate from this required monthly amount, except in very limited circumstances. The most common deviation is what is commonly referred to as the “Gross Up” method. This results in a reduction in the monthly payment based upon the amount of overnights each parent exercises with the minor children. Currently, this “Gross Up” method can be used if the parent with the least amount of time with the children has at least 40% of the overnights. This “Gross Up” formula reduces the child support obligation of the “paying parent” based upon the theory that the more time you spend with the children, the more money you will have to pay directly out of your own pocket, and the less money the other parent actually needs. As of October 1, 2010, this formula will now apply to any parent exercising at least 20% of the overnights per month. This equates to a little more than 6 overnights per month. This will impact almost all divorce cases in the future.

The second substantial change does away with the 25% reduction in day care payments. Currently, the parent who does not pay day care directly has his/her share included in the monthly child support payment, minus a 25% reduction. This is to compensate the parent who does not actually pay the bill for his/her loss of a poten-tial tax credit for day care. This 25% reduction has been eliminated as of October 1, 2010 and therefore contributions to day care will be based solely on percentages of income.

Myth: I can make more money in the stock market over the long term and liquidate it quickly rather than be saddled with a property.

Cashing in on stocks is one of the challenges of investing in the stock market. Knee-jerk desires might cause one to purchase a non-appreciating asset with his investment only to wake up with

remorse at tax time “wondering where the money went.” I’ve known some to cash out their 401Ks “for party and travel” because it was so

easy to do so. Magic: Mike Mandel, former chief economist at Business Week stated: “We’ve

just had the biggest boom and bust in real estate in recent history. Nevertheless, real estate has still greatly outperformed the stock market over the past ten years.”

Myth: It is cheaper to rent than to own. With mortgage rates at record lows and declining home prices, owning a home is often times cheaper than renting. (Credit Suisse)

Magic: Recently, a fellow agent signed a one-year lease for a 1,100-square-foot, home with a detached one-car garage for $1,650 a month (negotiated down from $1,750) and a $1,650 first deposit and a $3,200 security deposit.

The landlord micro-managed the property touting that “she missed gardening and wanted to keep the yard to her liking.” Tired of this invasion of privacy, the agent/tenant decided to purchase a 1,600 square-foot, single-family home with a one-car garage with a quiet lake view from an oversized roofed patio. With a minimum deposit (FHA 3.5% down), her monthly payment was calculated at $1,337. Not only will she experience “quiet enjoyment,” she will benefit at tax time, build equity, and be in total control of her own space.

Myth: It’s better to rent because I can keep my family mobile in the event of a job transfer or an unexpected life change.

Magic: In its National Housing Survey 2010, Fannie Mae asked current renters as to why they might want to purchase a home:

Owning a home creates a sense of community and belonging. In its recently pub-lished paper, The Homeownership Gap, The Federal Reserve Bank of New York stated: “Because owners have a financial interest in their property, they have incen-tives to take measures that will maintain or increase the value of that property. Some of these measures -- such as fixing a leaky roof- -- are closely related to the house itself. Others, such as investing resources in the betterment of the neighborhood and the community, have broader beneficial effects on the local area, creating what econ-omists call ‘positive externalities’.”

Myth: Most homeowners wish they had never bought, especially during the years 2005 through 2007, and will probably never, ever buy again.

Magic: According to Bankrate.com: “Ninety percent of homeowners say they don’t regret buying their home despite a nationwide tsunami of foreclosures, short sales and loan modifications.”

Disorder (ASD), with names such as CHAT, M-CHAT, ASIEP, PDDST, ADI-R, ADOS, CARS, ABC, GARS, and SCQ. Patients have speech and language delay, social isolation, and restricted interests and repetitive body movements that typically show up prior to their 3rd birthday.

But, what about diagnosing the child earlier? It has been shown that the earlier the diagnosis is made and interventions are started, the better the chance for inter-ventions that lead to improvement. What is available to help a parent get the best information at the earliest possible time? American Academy of Pediatrics

Your general pediatrician has been exposed to resources through their First Signs screening program, which includes a kit, videos, and supporting literature. You should ask the doctor if he utilizes these helpful tools.

Why loan Modifications Simply Don’t Work

T here are various opinions on what caused the real estate crisis. Whichever side is to blame, one thing is becoming increasingly evident – traditional loan modi-fications do not work. In 2009, fewer than 5% of all loan modification applica-

tions were approved by lenders, and more than half (55%) of loans modified were 30 days or more late within six months, according to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).

While lenders claim to be more willing to modify borrowers’ loans, many just aren’t offering deals that borrowers can afford over the long term. Lenders pro-mote loan modification because it is the best alternative for the lender, not the homeowner.

These are the principal reasons why loan modifications fail:1. Modified loans often carry “undefined” higher balances than the

original loan.Since many lenders add unpaid amounts to the principal loan balance, after a

loan modification, homeowners often end up with more mortgage debt than they originally incurred. A recent study found that an average of $10,800 was added to mortgages when they underwent a modification. 2. Modified loans often carry “undefined” higher monthly payments.

It should come as little surprise that with few lenders reducing principal — and most tacking on fees to the loan balance — nearly half of all loan modifications actu-ally resulted in increasing a borrower’s monthly payment. When a loan modification doesn’t reduce the monthly payment, or reduce it enough, the chances are quite high that the homeowner will fall behind again on payments. 3. Many homeowners are still upside down despite modifications.

Most borrowers owe far more than their home is worth after the real estate col-lapse. Since most modifications result in an increased principal loan balance, the time consuming process of a modification simply converts most homeowners into “rent-ers” of their own home with no possibility of realizing any equity in their lifetime. 4. Homeowners accept unaffordable terms, and waive important legal rights.

Desperate to save their homes, many homeowners will accept loan modification offers they can’t really afford. Just several months after signing a loan modification agreement, most homeowners are usually in a worse position than when they began the process. Nearly every loan modification agreement contains a waiver of rights in which the homeowner must release the lender from any liability for serious viola-tions of state and/or federal laws. 5. Navigating the system is difficult.

Homeowners could be tied up in the loan modification process for months, will complete several rounds of applications and financial statements, and will wait hours on the phone. Many homeowners seek help from so-called “loan-modification spe-cialists,” claiming to be affiliated with attorneys. Most of these are outright scams. They will take your money upfront and do nothing in return. End The Modification Insanity, And Take A Proactive Approach.

First, perform a detailed audit of your loan, which may reveal serious violations of Federal and State laws committed by your lender. Banks, lenders and servicing com-panies will only negotiate fairly and justly with homeowners if you can demonstrate that they have violated the law and may be exposed to a judgment for significant damages.

Second, hire a qualified law firm with knowledge about the types of claims a consumer has, and who can expose and use this very real threat against banks, lend-ers and servicing companies. A qualified law firm will also be able to identify and present proven legal defenses to a foreclosure action.

Davie’s 15,000 sq. ft. Medical Plaza is part of Baptist Health South Florida, the largest faith-based, not-for-profit health care organization in the region. There is cur-rently a Plaza in Coral Springs, on Sample Rd., just west of 441, and a third location will open in December, in Pembroke Pines, on Pines Blvd., just west of I-75. Baptist has created a process that is simple and hassle-free. When patients arrive, they can easily park right in front before entering the waiting rooms, which feel like living rooms, with comfortable seating, flat screen televisions, free wireless Internet and freshly brewed coffee. Patients register and then meet with a triage nurse who assesses their medical condition. Soon after, one of the highly skilled doctors begins a more thorough examination. Once inside, patients are usually treated and released within two hours.

When someone has a heart attack, severe injury, or a life-threatening problem, it is best to call 911 or head to the nearest hospital emergency room. When they have

a common ailment, such as an earache, fever, sore throat, flu symptoms or a minor injury, the urgent care center is the most convenient place to go. Davie’s urgent care is always staffed with at least one emergency room physician and two emergency room nurses. Based on a patient’s medical needs, a doctor may order diagnostic imaging studies and laboratory tests, all of which is completed on site. Most prescribed medi-cations are available at the center’s pharmacy.

Davie’s state-of-the-art diagnostic center offers a full range of high-tech imag-ing services which create the sharpest, clearest images available. As a result, its Board-certified, highly specialized radiologists often see what others miss, from tiny tumors to blocked arteries. Its high-tech equipment includes a 64 Slice Cat scan, a high-speed machine which has a unique software system that reduces radiation exposure by about fifty percent. Scanning time is shorter, so patients spend less time on the table. The Medical Plaza also has the latest Three Tesla MRI, which is able to acquire images faster and with a higher resolution. This unique machine is rarely seen outside of a hospital setting. The MRI is wider, so patients feel less claustropho-bic. Patients can also put on special glasses which allow them to view a DVD while the procedure is performed. “We recognize that patients often experience anxiety during these procedures,” said Nelson Jimenez, Diagnostic Imaging Supervisor.

“Our equipment is designed to reduce patient stress and provide the most comfort-able environment possible.”

The diagnostic center also offers digital mammography, which provides doctors with a high quality image almost immediately. If there is an abnormal finding, one of the radiologists can answer questions or recommend additional images, another procedure or a breast biopsy to address any concerns. Other diagnostic imaging ser-vices include digital X-ray, ultrasound, bone density (DEXA scan), echocardiogram, electrocardiogram and more.

Baptist Medical Plaza at Davie accepts most insurance plans and payment plans are available. la rural Specializes in Succulent Argentinean-Style Steaks By STAcey BOMSer

L a Rural is setting a new standard in steak houses. Diners come from all over South Florida to savor the authentic Argentinean-style steaks at this water-front Weston bistro.

It’s not surprising diners seek out this steak house. La Rural originated as a butcher shop and Argentinean market. Customers can still purchase its premium cuts of Certified Black Angus beef and freshly-made Argentinean sausages in the onsite market, in addition to La Rural’s selection of delicious Argentinean pastries

including homemade alfajores (dulce de leche cookies). The market also sells pastas, cheeses and Argentinean wines.

“We asked ourselves, ‘How can we better serve our customers?’ and decided to start grilling our steaks,” explains Eduardo O’toole, owner of La Rural. “The response was wonderful. We began with one table and quickly grew into a full ser-vice restaurant.”

The menu grew along with it. Today, La Rural offers a variety of Argentinean-style steaks, as well as other authentic cuisine. “Everything we serve is homemade,” states O’toole. “Nothing is bought prepared. It’s all made fresh in our kitchen.”

Appetizers include Argentinean Empanadas from the Salta province. Flavors include beef, chicken, ham and cheese, and spinach. Another Argentinean classic is the Provoleta, fine barbecued provolone cheese.

One of the best ways to get a true flavor for Argentinean cuisine is the Tablita La Rural. This grilled sampler platter features Chorizo Argentino (cured pork sausage), Morcilla (blood sausage), Mollejas (sweetbreads), Salchicha Parrillera (pinwheel sausage), accompanied by grilled peppers and marinated artichoke hearts.

The main attraction is La Rural’s grill menu, with its superior selection of steaks. Unlike American-style steak houses, Argentineans use very little seasonings. “It’s all about the flavor of the beef,” explains O’toole. “That’s why we serve only the highest quality cuts of meat. Always fresh, never frozen.”

One of the house specialties is the Entraña (skirt steak). Another Argentinean classic is the Vacio (flap meat), always tender and flavorful. O’toole also recommends the Asado de Tira (short ribs), the Gaucho’s favorite.

Other steak selections include the NY Strip grilled Argentinean style, Filet Mignon grilled with a bacon strip and La Rural’s peppercorn sauce, and the La Rural Ribeye, an incredibly tender and juicy boneless steak. All steaks are cooked to order. The grill menu also includes a chicken breast.

All steak selections feature one pound of meat, plus a salad and one side item. Diners can choose from six side dishes, including mashed potatoes, sweet potato fries, white rice, and La Rural’s popular Russian Salad made with potatoes, carrots and green beans.

La Rural also offers a selection of homemade pasta selections such as its Spinach Cannelloni, a homemade delicacy filled with spinach and ricotta cheese. Other entrée choices include the Milanesa de Carne or Pollo, breaded steak or chicken breast. It can also be prepared a la Napolitina, with cooked ham and cheese on top,

or a Caballo, with two fried eggs on top.To compliment any meal, La Rural offers a large selection of beer and Argentinean

wines. Many of these wines are also available in the market.Be sure to save room for dessert. La Rural offers a selection of scrumptious treats

to top off any meal. Choices include homemade Flan (sweet custard with caramel), Key Lime Calypso (key lime mousse with vanilla genoise and white chocolate chips), Pyramid Noisette (chocolate ganache with hazelnut), and Paradiso (mango/passion fruit and coconut mousses accented with dark chocolate). Incredibly, these delicacies taste even better than they look.

While the authentic Argentinean cuisine speaks for itself, it’s La Rural’s hospital-ity that brings people back. “We treat our customers like family,” states O’toole, not-ing that he has many customers who dine at the restaurant every week.

La Rural is open for lunch and dinner every day except Tuesday. The restaurant features live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
