it’s back-to-school time, again!

T here’s an old adage, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” That’s certainly the case this summer. As hard as it is to believe, it’s time to start planning for back-to-school.

That means stocking up on school supplies, scheduling school physicals, and, for kids, enjoying the last few days of staying up late and sleeping in. Soon we will be busy with our school-time routines, juggling carpool, sports prac-tice, and after-school activities. With that also comes the daily rush to get everything, including homework and dinner, done in time.

So until that first day of school arrives, let’s take an extra moment to enjoy the last few weeks of summer with our loved ones. Plan a family outing to the beach, or even the backyard pool, or invite some friends over for a backyard barbecue. Before you know it, we’ll be back-to-school and back to our busy lives.

Relish these final days of summer!

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischSven BudzischPublisher/Owner

Take Control of Your Health Care:The Importance of Primary Care Physicians by Christine Bucan

If visiting your primary care physician (PCP) on a regular basis is not part of your overall health care routine, it

should be. National studies have proved time and again the benefits of establishing an active, personal, comprehensive and long-term relationship with your PCP.

Medical journals continue to validate these findings. The International Journal of Health Services recently showed that states with more primary care physicians per capita have better

health outcomes, including fewer deaths from cancer, heart disease, or stroke.

Despite years of data, many Americans are still unaware of the critical role of the PCP, who is at the center of a patient’s care.

“A PCP is like a captain of a ship because they navigate the coordination of all the screenings, referrals to specialists, interpretations of test results and medications,” says Moises Issa, M.D., F.A.C.S.G., who practices in Hollywood, Florida. “A strong relationship with a PCP is important because this is someone the patient trusts and feels comfortable with. Additionally, the role of a PCP is to answer patient questions and ensure follow through with their treatments.”

There is a strong shift among providers across the country toward a more PCP-centric approach to delivering health care. In Florida, for example, AvMed Health Plans is introducing CenteredCare®, an approach that emphasizes the importance of building a strong relationship with the PCP to assure comprehensive, coordinated care.

“One of the best pieces of advice we can offer to optimize our member’s health is to have a good relationship with their PCP,” said Winston H. Lonsdale, Chief Medicare Executive at AvMed Health Plans. “Studies show that people under the care of a strong primary care physician – someone who truly guides and coordinates care – have fewer hospitalizations and better overall health. It’s important that people visit their PCP regularly – even when they are well.”

To find the perfect PCP, you’ll need to do some research. Not only should he or she be qualified and board-certified, but your personalities should match. Like any good relationship, communication is critical. You’ll need to feel comfortable explaining the intimate details of your physical and mental health, and in turn, the doctor will need to respond to your needs in a way that makes you feel cared for and understood, in addition to providing effective treatment.

To learn more about the importance of establishing a strong bond with your PCP, visit AvMedMedicare.org.

COOPER CITY

F ifTy-Two-year-old scoTT vengel of davie has always consid-ered himself to be in good shape. He exercises on a regular basis and has com-pleted marathons and triathlons.

His cholesterol and blood pressure levels are consistently normal. On May 23, how-ever, without any symptoms or warning, something went terribly wrong. While exercising on a stationary bike at the Pine Island Fitness Center, he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Thanks to the efforts of a large team of people, he has made a complete recovery. “It was like a perfect storm,” said Vengel. “I benefited from the great work of so many people and I will always be grateful to them.”

When Vengel went into cardiac arrest, several members of the Town of Davie Parks and Recreation on-duty staff (James Marold, Kevin Favata, Sam Gulla, Chris Tamborelli and Anthony Induisi) started CPR. They found the Town’s AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and shocked him back to life. By the time the Davie Fire Rescue arrived, Vengel had a pulse and was breathing. Rescue 38 (Acting Lieutenant Lockhart and FF/PM Sanjinez) transported him with engine

According to Jorge L. Gonzalez, Battalion Chief of Davie Fire-Rescue Department, the keys to surviving a heart attack are recognition, early CPR, early defibrillation and early advanced life support. “During this incident, everything in the chain of survival worked in perfect sequence,” said Gonzalez. “It was a great job performed by all Town of Davie personnel. It shows the importance of CPR and AED training.” The Town of Davie offers CPR classes for lay rescuers on a monthly basis. “We encourage everyone to become trained in CPR and AED so we can save more lives,” said Julie Downey, Asst. Fire Chief for the Town of Davie Fire-Rescue Department.

Vengel recently met with the rescuers and fitness staff members that saved his life.

“Without them, I would not be alive today,” said Vengel. He was also recognized at a Davie Town Council meeting.

Salon one80 is normally closed on sundays, buT on augusT 12 it will open for a very special event. Owner Renee Zapata will be hosting the salon’s second Cut-A-Thon for Madison Star Schafer, who suffered from

pediatric cancer. This time, it will be in her memory. From 10am to 4pm, the salon will offer manicures, pedicures, haircuts and blowouts at a reduced price. There will be food and a variety of activities for the whole family. All of the proceeds will go to the Miracles for Madison Foundation.

Renee has four children of her own. When she learned that long-time client Diane Schafer’s granddaughter was diagnosed with pediatric cancer, she wanted to do something to help. Last year, Renee held a cut-a-thon and raised $8,000. Although Maddie seemed to be get-ting better, she lost her battle with cancer on July 13. “Maddie was so beautiful, with big blue eyes and little blonde curls,” said Renee.

“She went through so much.”

Chris and Susie Schafer first discovered Maddie’s health issues on September 9, 2010, when they took their 20-month-old to the emergency room for a suspected ear infection. An MRI revealed that Maddie had a very rare and aggressive cancerous brain tumor called AT/RT (Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor). Every year, only 30 children under the age of three in the United States get this type of cancer. After an eight hour brain surgery, doctors were able to remove 90% of the tumor. She was given a 10% chance of survival and was fighting for her life. After two months of intensive chemotherapy, the 10% tumor that remained after surgery had disappeared. It was the first Miracle for Madison.

In March 2012, Maddie had her final round of chemo and was in remission for a second time. “We were so elated with the news that the tumors were gone and there would be no more chemo treatments,” wrote her father Chris on his blog. “She taught me what a true fighter is and to never give up, no matter how difficult a situation you are put in. Maddie is a true hero.” Three months later, the cancer returned with a ven-geance and tumor masses were all throughout her brain. This time Chris wrote, “It is with the deepest sadness that I have to write that Maddie’s cancer is back and there are no more options for us. We are so devastated and will keep her free of pain for the remaining months she is with us.”

Maddie spent her final days under hospice care resting comfortably at home with her parents, Chris and Susie, and 7-year-old brother, Colin. “No words can express the heartache our family is feeling right now,” said her grandmother Diane. “No parent should have to go through this and no child or baby should have to suffer through the evils of cancer. We need to be the voice of these children and speak up, because most of these kids can’t. Please help me spread the word to help put an end to this epidemic.”

To learn more about Maddie’s story, visit www.madisonsstory.com. To help with the event or to make an appointment, call 954-349-4414. Cash or checks only. Salon One80 is located at 1396-3 SW 160 Ave., in the Indian Trace Shopping Center.

A s summer begins To wind down, many Davie residents are starting to plan for the fall.

The Police Athletic League of Davie Inc. (Davie PAL) is a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. Over 420 kids are enrolled in basketball, tutoring, boxing, mentoring and a variety of other programs and activities.

Registration will begin this month for the basketball program. Davie PAL recently installed a brand new, state-of-the-art wooden basketball court to replace the old one that was in poor condition. The PAL League, for ages 7 to 15, offers players an opportunity to learn a variety of basketball skills, including ball handling, dribbling, passing and more. “We start by teaching the kids the basics, so they can become well-rounded players,” said Johnny Flemming, program director. PAL also offers a high school basketball league, as well as a travel league for players ages 7 to 17.

Students, in third to eighth grades, can also sign up

for after school tutoring in the fall. The program is held from 2:30 to 5:30pm. During the first hour, the children have play time and a snack. At 3:30pm, certified teach-ers and volunteers help them with homework, answer questions, and prepare them for the FCAT. The students visit the computer lab to work on reading and math skills. They also spend time in the garden planting and working with Girl Scout volunteers. There is no cost for the pro-gram, which is made available through a Juvenile Justice Grant. There is free bus service for children from Davie Elementary School. PAL is always looking for adults or students interested in tutoring. “Many of these kids do

not have parents at home to help them with their work,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL.

“They appreciate any help they get from volunteers.”

Another popular program is boxing for beginners. It is offered throughout the year, for ages 7 to 20. Participants get in shape as they learn self-defense, discipline and teamwork. Two Davie PAL boxers recently advanced to the Regional Junior Olympics in North Carolina.

Davie PAL also offers an opportunity for mentoring in an effort to reach out to youth who are presented with opportunities to engage in high-risk behaviors that have tragic, long-term consequences. Mentoring can take place in a one-on-one, team, or group setting. Mentors offer support, advocacy, guidance, and friendship and can have a lifelong impact on the youth they serve.

Davie PAL is located at 4300 S.W. 57th Terrace, in Davie. For information, call 954-321-2561 or visit www.daviepal.org.

EveryThing in life is all abouT balance. wheTher it is a balance of work and play time, portion sizes and choices of eating, spending and saving, balance is an integral part

of life. Without balance, havoc or chaos is created. This becomes true not only as part of an emotional interplay in your life, but also inward in your internal system / network of hormones. Without the proper balance of hormones and steroids, health conditions may arise. For example, Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is a steroid made from cholesterol, is extremely important in the

production of our hormones estrogens and testosterone. In low levels, DHEA is known to cause:

▸ Decreased sound sleep - Decreased REM sleep is related to memory storage. Clinical research has shown that DHEA protects against brain damage that is associated with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. In these clients with low levels of DHEA, reversal of symptoms of senile dementia may occur with proper replacement.

▸ stress and age-related dis-ease - This includes depression, peptic ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome. DHEA at optimized levels produces an anti-cortisol activity, which promotes the body’s ability to cope with stress.

▸ Decreased immune system - Low levels have been reported in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). At optimized levels, DHEA has been shown to stimulate the immune system.

▸ obesity - DHEA at proper levels has been shown to decrease fat, increase lean body weight and curve appetite.

▸ hypertension - The imbalance created in your body’s system due to a decrease in DHEA can lead to an over production of other steroids creating hypertension.

▸ Heart attack - Low levels of DHEA have been shown to be associated with an increase progression of coronary atherosclerosis.

▸ insulin resistance - Studies have shown that DHEA protects against insulin resistance.

▸ thyroid function - Hypothyroidism has been associated with low levels of DHEA.

▸ HiV and AiDs - Low levels of DHEA have been shown to have a direct correlation of the progression of the disease. DHEA may also provide some measure of protection against HIV infection.

In summary, DHEA is major steroid hormone that provides the materials for the synthesis of our sex hormones and maintains balance to protect us from stressors/ diseases placed on the body. Just as too low of a level of DHEA can wreck havoc on the body, so can too high of a level. Too much DHEA can also off set the whole metabolism of the individual, causing more harm to the body than good. It is imperative to obtain levels prior to supplementing with DHEA. Proper levels of DHEA are measured through saliva. Periodic levels should be monitored. Dosaging of DHEA should be determined only through a physician specializing in functional medicine. Do not ever attempt to supplement DHEA on your own, without the guidance of a physician. The key to optimizing health is through balance.

T his year, 103 sTudenTs from florida were recognized by the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program for making a

positive impact in their communities through volunteerism. One of the winners, ten-year-old Anthony Beckman, lives in Southwest Ranches.

Anthony has been a member of Cub Scout Pack 160 since he was in first grade. Most of the kids in the pack, including Anthony, attend Hawks Bluff Elementary. For the past four years, they have raised money to use for beautification projects at the school. They rebuilt the atrium near the front office and fixed up the school’s front entrance three times. For each of the proj-ects, they mulched, cleaned out the overgrown vegetation, and planted some new things. “We want to make sure that the school looks nice for all of the students,” said Anthony. The troop has also planted trees at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park and participated in a beach clean-up in Hollywood.

Anthony also helps out around his parent’s farm in Sunshine Ranches. During the summer months, and occasionally during the school year, he wakes up at 5:30am to help clean the barn and feed the horses.

“I know that I can always count on him to help,” said MaiLin Beckman, his mother. “He is very responsible and understands the importance of helping his family and the community.”

To honor his efforts, Anthony received a $50 gift card and a recognition certificate from Kohl’s Department Stores. “I will use the money to buy a new hat for my mother and a toy for myself,” said Anthony. He also has an opportunity to receive a $1,000 regional scholarship, as well as $10,000 in scholarships for his post-secondary education.

Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has recognized more than 17,000 kids with nearly $3.5 million in scholarships and prizes. There were more than 2,200 winners in 2012. “Kohl’s is thrilled to recognize more than 2,200 young volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to bettering the communities in which we live,” said Julie Gardner, Kohl’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer. “Every effort, large or small, makes a difference. Through the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program, we strive to

not only recognize these efforts, but also encourage outstanding youth to improve their communities through volunteerism.”

“At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors.

Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthma-free childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions.

No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle!

I am so thankful for finding Dr. Popkin and to experience NAET, a natural method for eliminating allergy symptoms. - Susan G. ” and patient handbook on NAET,

For nearly Two years, davie’s young aT Art Museum has been bringing art to more than 600 children at eight Head Start classrooms in

Broward County as part of the ArtSTART on the Go program. Some of the kids in the program recently took a field trip to visit the Museum’s new home. They played at the water table and participated in a special art activity designed just for them. They also had an opportunity to explore the Museum’s WonderScapes area.

ArtSTART on the Go is an early childhood outreach program for underserved preschool children. It is a col-laboration between the PNC Foundation and Young At Art Museum, with additional support provided by The Peacock Foundation and Broward County Schools. “We strongly believe in and support programs committed to reaching young, preschool-age children,’ said Craig Grant, President of PNC for Florida. “Young At Art Museum is a wonderful partner and provides amazing learning and creative opportunities for Head Start classes.”

Through age appropriate programs, ArtSTART on the Go introduces children to art material as they engage in sensory based activities designed to increase verbal skills and understanding of spatial relationships, build self-esteem and foster early development of language, math, literacy, science and the creative arts. The curriculum

incorporates art materials such as pastels, clay and India ink, while encouraging children to use their five senses to create masterpieces with an array of color, shape and textured materials. Themed activities center around weather, multicultural awareness and saving the earth. The children also take home parent packs to encourage families to do things together. “The program infuses arts-based experiences into the classroom and fills a void in early childhood education,” said Hannah Hausman, Director of Development for Young At Art. “It touches the children, teachers and parents.”

In May, the Young At Art Museum moved to a new location in Davie. The $26 million, 55,000 square-foot Young At Art Museum features four permanent galleries. The Young At Art Institute features a series of profession-ally equipped studios for drawing, painting, sculpture, animation, photography and film, printmaking, mixed media, digital computer and 4D video design. The facility also includes a 10,000 square-foot Broward County Library, a National Traveling Exhibition Gallery, Teen Center and Recording Studio, a preschool and early childhood learning center, a Museum Gift Shop and the Toss Up Salads Café.

Young At Art is located at 751 SW 121 Ave., in Davie. For information, call 954-424-0085 or visit YoungAtArtMuseum.org.

Dear Friend,

I want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left.

Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened!

It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few.

Here’s what some of my patients had to say:

“Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL

“Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that!

Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor.

You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for

chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 8/31/12) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. For more Than seven years, The boy scouT’s camp Elmore (formerly Camp Seminole) has been closed and under construction. The Davie campsite recently reopened with

state-of-the-art facilities. Although it is primarily used by the Boy Scouts, it is available for other youth services programs in the area. More than 1,200 members of the JROTC camped at the property over the summer.

The 117-acre property has been operated as a Boy Scout camp since the early 1950’s. The original property was filled with Australian Pines, which grew fast and gave off plenty of shade. They were not, however, very resistant to wind. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma came through the campsite with a vengeance and destroyed everything.

The Scouts launched an aggressive Capital Development Campaign to raise funds. After receiving several generous donations, includ-ing over $1 million from businessman Robert “Bob” Elmore, Scout leaders decided to level the camp site and rebuild. The name was changed from Camp Seminole to Camp Elmore in recognition of his donation.

The new property has 9 one-acre campsites; 4 bath/shower houses, each containing 10 bathrooms and six showers; climbing and repelling walls; a 350-ft. zip line; a large amphitheater; basketball courts; soccer fields and much more. There are also four large program pavilions, including an aquatic center for canoeing, rowing, kayaking and sailing; a nature lodge; a BB gun range; and an archery range. The 9-acre lake was completely dredged. It is now much deeper and stocked with 10,000 fish, just waiting to be caught.

“Camp Elmore is finally ready to service the youth in the South Florida area,” said Cliff Freiwald, Camping and Properties Director for the South Florida Council. “It is a great place for urban kids to enjoy the outdoors and leave their electronics behind. So many wonderful things happen around a campfire. Families bond in ways that are not possible at home.”

Camp Elmore is located at 3301 SW 142nd Ave., in Davie, just north of Vista View Park. For information, call 954-584-4200, ext. 213 or visit www.sfcbsa.org.

Marshall ho, aThleTic Trainer for archbishop mccarThy high School, teaches what he preaches. For the past 10 years, he has taught a four-week Sports Medicine class during the summer. Students learn about basic

anatomy, rehabilitation, first aid, nutrition, techniques of wrapping and taping body parts, and much more. They also take field trips and have an opportunity to listen to a variety of guest speakers, including athletes and physicians.

Most of the kids in the class want to enter health-related fields by becoming nutrition-ists, physicians, therapists or athletic trainers.

“The class helps the students become more informed when choosing a career,” said Ho. Some of the students are also athletes, who want to understand what happens to their bodies when they get injured.

Francisco Laboy, a Sports Medicine physi-cian from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Sports Medicine Department, recently spoke to the class. He told the students that it takes at least 11 years to become a physician, reminded them that it is important to do well in college, gave them some tips on applying to medical school, and

described a typical day of work. He also left plenty of time for them to ask questions. “The students were impressed by what Dr. Laboy had to say,” said Ho. “The information will help them look at high school differently and motivate them to continue to work hard in the Sciences and other subjects. It also gave them a better understanding of the large investment in time in money necessary to become a physician.”

Laboy also spoke about the Concussion Clinic, which NSU holds for the 850 McCarthy student athletes at the beginning of the sports season. As a precaution, all of the athletes are required to establish a baseline with ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), a computerized concus-sion evaluation system which provides useful information that is used to make sound return to play decisions following concussions. “This information will be helpful in the unlikely event that a student suffers from a head injury/brain impact,” said Ho.

A group of 23 sTudenTs and Two chaperones from wesTern high School have been busy brushing up on the Japanese language and culture. They will be travelling to Japan this

summer on a two-week study tour that is fully funded by The Laurasian Institution, in partnership with The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Nationwide, 35 schools were selected to participate and Western was the only school chosen in Florida.

The project is called Kizuna, which means “bonds of friendship” in Japanese. It is designed to encourage greater under-standing between the youth of Japan and the United States and to foster long-term and ongoing interest in one another by providing firsthand cultural experiences. It also promotes understanding about the current situation in Japan, as well as the recovery efforts from the earthquake and tsunami that occurred on March 11, 2011.

Satako Fisher, Japanese club sponsor and Japanese teacher at Western High School, applied for the opportunity to participate. She started the Japanese program at the school two years ago and it has grown quickly. When the tsunami and earthquake struck, she led the Japanese club in a fundraising effort and collected over $5,000 to

send to Japan. When another earthquake struck a few months later, the club raised additional funds. Ironically, Fisher will not be able to chaperone the students, because she had already planned to visit her family in Japan during the assigned dates and could

not alter her trip. The group consists of honors students

who have taken at least one year of Japanese. On the trip, they will travel to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, where they will explore vari-ous museums, shrines, historic sites, and much more. They will spend three nights with a host family. They will also visit an area struck by the tsunami, where they will engage in volunteer activities with students in a sister school who have been impacted by the disaster. They will meet with children at shelters and schools; plant trees; and help clean the beaches, homes, parks, and other areas.

“This is such an amazing opportunity for our students,” said Kristine Frailing, chaperone and teacher at Western High School.

“They will learn how Japan handles catastrophes economically, social and culturally versus the United States. They will also experience the language, people and culture that they have been studying in school.”

After the Western students return, they will host their Japanese sister school. They will teach them about life in the United States and show them some of the local sites.

STudenTs aT david posnack Jewish Day School in Davie are doing their part to help make the world a greener

place. They recently participated in the 2011-2012 PepsiCo Dream Machine Recycle Rally, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of recycling among students in grades K-12. It also gives schools a chance to earn rewards and compete for prizes – including a $50,000 Dream Green School Makeover.

The Rally is part of the broader PepsiCo Dream Machine recycling initiative – a multi-year collaboration with Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful. Approximately 900 schools are currently enrolled in the program in 32 states nationwide. According to Keep America Beautiful, only 12 percent of public spaces are equipped with recycling receptacles, illustrating a clear need for greater public access to recycling bins. The Dream Machine recycling program aims to create strategic partnerships to help increase the U.S. beverage container recycling rate to 50 percent by 2018.

David Posnack students collected 15,881

non-alcoholic aluminum cans and plastic bottles. In return, the school earned points that can be redeemed for rewards, such as electronics, sporting goods, gift cards, music, books and videos. “David Posnack Jewish Day School is very proud of our students’ success in the Dream Machine Recycle Rally,” said Lesli Reinstein Rosenblatt, director of admis-sions and communications for David Posnack Jewish Day School. “Through participating in this program, our students and their families have increased their recycling at school and at home. PepsiCo provided us with a free lap-top computer and scanning equipment, and Waste Management collects our recyclables and transports them to its Reuter Recycling Facility in Pembroke Pines for processing. It’s fun and easy. Our students and parents really embraced the program.”

The David Posnack Jewish Day School is located at 5810 South Pine Island Road in Davie. For information, visit www.posnackschool.org or call 954-583-6100.

P redaTory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrowers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are present

in a mortgage transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that loan has revealed serious violations of federal and state lending laws.

Property Purchased or refinanced Between 2003 and 2007.

This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without regard for past credit history or current ability to pay, could obtain a “sub-prime” loan for up to 115% of the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values.

mortgage Loan Contains an Adjustable rate or “Arm” Feature. These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period

of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%.

mortgage Loan suffers From negative Amortization.Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient

to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized.

mortgage Loan is interest-only or Pick-a-Payment.Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on

the loan, or a minimum payment that does not cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding principal balance. Once the loan payment increases, so does the likelihood that the borrower will default.

mortgage Loan Approval Was Based only on stated income. Many borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they

were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker.

If two or more of these factors apply to your current loan, you should have a forensic audit of your loan performed to find out whether you have been a victim of predatory lending. If you possess these claims, and they are timely raised against your lender, you may be entitled to actual damages and/or a reduction of the amount you owe on your loan.

Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also dis-cussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” Mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, and you will receive a free copy during your consultation with a member of our legal team.

The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to represent dozens of homeowners in our com-munity with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. I T has been more Than eighT years since The over-publicized and over-exaggerated risks of hormone therapy hit the news. This has been a serious disservice to women, creating

a fear of hormones which has been blown out of proportion. Out of concern for my patients, many of whom suffer from

changes associated with their ovaries in approach to menopause or in reaching full menopause, and a genuine interest in finding a safe and suitable solution, I spent nearly a year researching medical litera-ture with regard to bioindentical hormones. I discovered that those

studies, which caused all the fear, had to do with synthetic hormones. Those risks do not pertain to bioidentical hormone therapy.

Hormone therapy is nothing to fear. Hormones are used in many other aspects of medicine. Where would we be today if it were not for insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas to regulate blood sugar? Insulin therapy allows many of my diabetic patients to experience a normal prenatal course and give birth to healthy babies. Hormones are also used to regulate thyroid disorders. Even children are prescribed growth hormone therapy if they are not growing properly.

It is also a viable treatment for menopausal women. When you consider today’s popula-tion and average life span, women will spend over 1/3 of their lives in menopause (lack of ovarian function). I have a list available in my exam rooms of over 35 symptoms commonly associated with menopause and perimenopause. Many times in greeting a patient, they will express that “I am having 30 out of 35 of these symptoms.”

At some point in a woman’s life, menopause is inevitable. Bioidentical hormones can alleviate the symptoms associated with lack of estrogen and testosterone as these levels fall with age. Quality of life is enhanced as skin tone, hair, nails, energy, libido, and memory are all improved.

Bioidentical hormone therapy also offers many health benefits. After using natural hormones, women experience an increase in bone density which protects against osteoporosis. Muscle metabolism is also improved leading to an increase in muscle mass and reduction of body fat. Testosterone protects the heart and heart disease is the number one medical problem in this country.

It is important to point out that bioidentical hormone therapy is not a one size fits all treatment. In other words, every patient has their therapy individualized, so it is custom prepared to fill their body’s deficiencies and put the body back into balance. Patients sleep better, therapeutic levels are more consistent, and everything improves over time.

Patients who are using bioidentical hormone therapy have a high degree of satisfaction. I am consistently told: “I should have done this sooner,” “my children want to be around me again,” and “I have more energy.”

Men can also benefit from bioidentical hormone therapy. As men age, testosterone levels decrease. With hormone therapy men notice increased muscle strength, more energy, and a better libido.

Don’t take my word for it, do your own research; talk with others who have benefited from bioidentical hormone therapy. It’s a natural and safe way to improve your health and quality of life.

T he baby boomer generaTion has had a huge impact on many categories of American life, from music to art to technology. Those same boomers are now impacting

family law as well. Statistics have shown that the overall divorce rate over the past 20 plus years has actually declined. This could be because the marriage rate has decreased as well. In spite of this overall decline in divorce, the rate for those couples over 50 has doubled over the same span of time. This increase in the divorce

rate of these boomers has led to the term “Gray Divorce”.There are probably many factors which have led to this increase. More and more

people are celebrating their 50th birthdays and, as such, the over 50 population has increased. The greater the number of people, the greater the number of divorces. There are, however, other factors to be considered as well. People are generally living longer, which results in potentially very long marital relationships. As people age,

their prospective on life sometimes changes as well. Their mortality comes into issue and couples who are not happy in their marriage no longer wish to remain together for the later part of their lives. Some couples wait until their children are grown and have established their own lives. Parents feel that after raising their children it is now

“their time” to explore and enjoy life. Unfortunately, in many instances their spouse is not who they wish to share this experience with.

Finances are the most significant issues that accompany divorces for individuals in the later years of life. After years and years of working, owning a home and placing funds in retirement, the plans that were shared in the past disappear with the signing of a Final Judgment granting the divorce.

In Florida, equitable distribution of assets almost always results in an equal division between the parties. As a result, each will have only half of what they owned together. Expenses will increase as there will be the necessity of funding two residences. This often times leads to parents moving in with their children or taking in a roommate. In addition, because of the fact that the majority of their working years are behind them, they have less time to try and re-coup their losses. Homes, which are usually a couple’s largest asset, will often have to be sold. Monthly pension checks that are divided between the parties often times result in a party having to continue working beyond the normal retirement age. There may be an alimony component which could cause additional financial complications.

Although divorce proceedings for more mature adults can be less complicated due to the avoidance of child related issues, there are financial issues which less mature couples do not have to address. I strongly suggest that before decisions are made it would be best to discuss your concerns with an experienced family law attorney.

T ell me if This has ever happened To you, or someone you know. Life is going great and then one day you begin to feel bad. For example, certain foods cause stomach

pain, gas, or bloating. Or maybe your nose begins to drip constantly or becomes totally stuffed up. Maybe you suddenly have rashes or itching or begin experiencing pain in your muscles, joints or sore-ness you can’t explain. Naturally, you grow a bit worried and see your Doctor, who advises you to take over the counter medication

or writes you a prescription. You are faithful to your Doctor’s request for several days, as your condition(s) either improve, or remain the same. Let’s say they do get better, now you feel confident enough to stop the drugs but then, your symptoms come back. Again, you find yourself in your doctor’s office who refers you to a specialist. They do the usual routine; blood tests, urine, and maybe an X-Ray or CT scan. And guess what? All tests come back normal! You find yourself confused and thinking to yourself “hmm, maybe it’s just me”. How many times have you heard this story?

Well, let me reassure you, you are not going crazy! The problem is that many Doctors are missing pieces of the puzzle and those miss-ing pieces are allergies. Allergies occur when your immune system makes a mistake. Normally, your immune system protects you from germs and disease. It does this by producing antibodies that help you fight off bacteria, viruses, and other micro-organisms. But if you have an allergy, your immune system mistakenly treats something as if it’s really dangerous to you.

Undiagnosed allergies can pro-duce symptoms, illnesses, and chronic diseases (like migraine headaches), sinusitis, ear infections, backaches, asthma, etc. Such symptoms can affect every system and organ in the body. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, immune disorders, hyperactivity, arthritis, anxiety, depression, addictions and many other conditions can be allergy-based.

For the fifty percent of Americans (128 million people) suffering from various health problems caused by allergies not yet known to them, NAET effectively treats both allergies and sensitivities.

What is NAET? NAET stands for Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique. It is an extremely safe and effective means of treating all forms of allergies. It has been around for over 25 years and was developed by a doctor who was seeking an alternative treatment for patients. There are no needles, shots or medications used. The treatment is completely painless and totally safe for infants, children and adults. By using NAET we are able to reprogram the immune system. I have found that individuals with food allergies/ intolerances, environmental, chemical, and even pet allergies feel incred-ible relief once we clear them of their allergic responses. By eliminating the allergies, the patient’s problems are resolved no matter how long they have had them and the results are permanent.

florida attracts international buyers

According To The naTional associaTion of Realtors 2012 Profile of International Home Buying Activity:

“International buyers bought homes throughout the country, but four states accounted for 51 percent of the purchases – Florida, California, Texas and Arizona. Florida has been the fastest growing destination of choice, accounting for 26 percent of foreign purchases.

. . . Florida attracts a diverse set of international buyers including South Americans, Europeans and Canadians.”

What are the most important factors influencing these purchases? ▸ 40% feel the United States is a desirable location. ▸ 31% feel that the United States is a profitable investment. ▸ 21% feel that real estate in the United States is a secure investment. ▸ 8% - other

According to NAR: ▸ 45% of international purchases were under $250,000. ▸ Many homes purchased by foreign buyers are used as a primary residence. ▸ 62% of international purchases were all cash throughout the country, which

has increased since 2007.What have been the purchasing terms this year for our local area?

According to the graphs provided by NAR, Florida still leads in international sales. In 2007, 10% of all sales were from foreign buyers; in 2009, 23%; and in 2011, 31%. So far, in 2012, 26% of all sales were from foreign buyers, and we have an entire half a year to go!

We are a global economy; therefore, what happens in Europe and around the globe affects our market. With the current instability of our European neighbors, many are turning to the United States as a safe place to invest their money.

We are still incredibly low on inventory. Consider:

The rental market is really up and interest rates are really down. Now may be the best time for you to purchase the investment property.

Florida is still a great place to buy and a greater place to live. We have it all. If you are considering upsizing or downsize your current Florida residence or know someone who wants to be your neighbor, give me a call.

Pasha Calabro is a two-year-old exotiC shorthair that has trained us to spoil her exactly as deserves. Pasha’s laid-back personality is sweet and affectionate. She loves to follow us from room to room and is especially

excited to help us when we use the computer. Her enormous eyes follow the cursor on the screen, as she tries to touch it with her paw. Pasha has rejected all of the luxurious cat beds we purchased for her. Instead, she sleeps in the cool, oval, master bathroom sink. Each night, Pasha lulls us to sleep with her gentle snoring.

ask the sheriff

T he broward sheriff’s office has always sTrived to stay a step ahead of the curve when it comes to commu-nicating with the public. Creative and forward thinking is

crucial during this new digital age of communication. There is no doubt that our website, www.sheriff.org, is a valuable tool in pro-viding the public with important information. Recently, we added two new features to the site.

The first is Community Events, which not only lists all of the upcoming events the Broward Sheriff’s Office is hosting, it also provides mapping to the location of the event. The second new and advanced feature is our BSO mobile application (app), which we created for smart phone and tablet users. The BSO mobile app provides users with a one-touch approach to search arrests, civil cases, news, report a crime, view and map our events, contact the agency and connect to our social media sites.

By researching the most important and valuable areas of interest to our website visitors, we were able to develop this one-touch approach to connect with our agency. We are proud to say that we are one of the first public safety agencies to launch such a progressive mobile app. The new BSO app can be downloaded by visiting www.sheriff.org/mobile/ or clicking on the new mobile app button located in the top right-hand corner of our website. Once prompted, add the BSO app to your home screen. In a matter of seconds, you will have access to some of the most important information we provide.

There is no secret that social media is an emerging trend. While there are many social media outlets, Facebook is by far the leader. With more than 500 million users worldwide and more than 150 million users in the United States alone, that means half of all Americans are Facebook users. To put this trend into perspective, it took 90 years for the home telephone to become conventional and only five years for Facebook to become mainstream. Most interestingly, the largest increase in demographics for Facebook is users who are 55 and older.

Another popular site for communicating is Twitter. This interactive form of social media allows you to use a minimal amount of characters for messages (also known as tweets), but is commonly used to provide information in “real time”. It also allows users to interact and forward on “tweets” to their contacts as they are posted.

I realize that social media and mobile apps like ours are useful in communicating important safety information. I am a firm believer that the more informed you are, the safer you are. That is why we utilize these and other tools such as my E-Newsletter and our CyberVisor program, which is an advisory e-mail and text system that provides residents and business owners with vital information about:

▸ Criminal Activity

▸ Traffic Issues

▸ Security Concerns

▸ Upcoming Events

▸ Public Safety Initiatives

▸ Important Safety Tips And More

I look forward to hearing your feedback on our new and improved communication efforts. Stay safe!

If you have not signed up for our CyberVisor program or E-Newsletter, I encourage you to visit www.sheriff.org/cybervisor to sign up today. You can also follow us on Facebook at Broward Sheriff’s Office (Official) and Twitter @browardsheriff. As always, you can e-mail me at Ask_The_Sheriff.org.

For over 60 years, growers equipmenT Co. in Davie has been providing customers with agricultural and construction equip-

ment. The family-owned and operated company has supplied and serviced equipment to farmers growing the food we eat, contractors building the homes we live in, and governments maintaining our parks, beaches and infrastructure.

David Lopez, president, answered some commonly asked questions about Growers Equipment Co.

What is the history of Growers Equipment? Growers Equipment was founded in 1950 by Arthur Vining Davies, former CEO of ALCOA. At the time, ALCOA invested in large tracts of land in Florida that were later developed by Davies’ company, ARVIDA. Back then, Growers had the Ford Tractor franchise, from Fort Pierce to Key West. Today, Growers has the franchise for New Holland (formerly Ford tractors) and Kubota, plus a large number of brands related to the farms and construction equipment business.

Why do you think Growers has been success-ful for so many years? Throughout the years, Growers has always maintained customer ser-

vice as its main priority. We have provided our custom-ers with top of the line equip-ment and ser-vice. We never forget that the customer is the most important

piece of the puzzle, as well as our employees who service them.

Who are your customers? Growers’ customer base has evolved throughout the years. When it started in 1950, its customers were mainly farmers. As South Florida grew into a major metropolitan area, the number of farm equip-ment customers decreased, while construction equipment customers increased. Today, Growers supplies both markets with success. The conti-nuity with the two major franchises has assured customers that they can get service and parts for equipment that maybe as old as 30 years. Growers also has many foreign customers who prefer to source farming equipment and special farming implements in the United States.

What product lines do you sell? Our prod-

uct lines include the finest products from New Holland and Kubota. Both brands have been in the market for many years. They are constantly at the forefront of equipment design and tech-nology and in line with market demands.

What type of construction equipment do you sell? We offer a complete line of backhoes, loaders, skid steer loaders (generically referred to as Bobcats) in both wheel and track configu-rations, and any implements and attachments for them.

What type of farm equipment do you sell? Our farm equipment line includes tractors from 13HP to over 600 HP.

What implements and attachments do you carry? We offer a wide range of implements and attachments, including plows, disk harrows, planting and seeding equipment, harvesting equipment and haying implements. New Holland offers the finest and best product for haying, recognized all over the world. For construction, we have all types of attachments, including buck-ets, forks, hydraulic hammers, and much more.

How has your product offer changed through the years? Technology has affected our product offering through the years. Most significantly,

diesel engines are now at a technological level never seen before, with emission levels that remove up to 99% of contaminants. In product design, technology has affected the productivity of the equipment, incorporation of GPS, digital systems, etc.

What is special about your staff? Growers Equipment has a highly capable and efficient staff. They frequently attend technical training to ensure they are knowledgeable. There is very little turnover and a large percentage of the staff has been with the company for many years. Recently, we had a Sales Manager retire after 40 years with the company and many employees have over 20 years of service.

What kind of service do you offer? We have a full service facility. We do repairs, including both minor and major service. Our technicians are factory trained and attend service schools to maintain their technological knowledge. Today’s products are highly complex and technologically advanced. It is important to deal with the people that are trained to work on the newest models.

What items do customers bring for service? Many large customers do minor repair and maintenance on equipment purchased from Growers. They also visit the service depart-ment for engine overhauls, hydraulic systems, electrical and transmissions.

Do you rent, sell and/or lease equipment? Most of our customers purchase equipment. In certain situations, we also offer customers the flexibility of lease programs. We also rent equipment to customers that only need to use it for shorter periods of time.
