GOALS & OBJECTIVESThe goals & objectives of Studio 1 are to gain a greater understanding of problem solving skills and design methodologies through the implementation of real world professional concepts and the visualization of dynamic ideas. The goals include an increased understanding of research methods and content contextualize. The use of design elements and appropriate typographic usage. Correct use of media to communicate effectively to a specific audience as well as project management and design practices with the inclusion of detailed creative briefs.

ASSIGNMENTThe project for Studio 1 is to create a visual identity system for a museum exhibition. The exhibition is to be focused on that of a French theme whether that be a person, place or abstract idea. This project is broken up into three parts including the identity program, environmental graphics, and the narrative material. All three of these will culminate in final 3D works.

Willy Ronis was a photographer from Paris working from the 1940’s to 2001. He is best known for his LYRICAL black-and-white photographs of courting couples, busy street scenes and children at play that lent a gentle but enduring MYSTIQUE to postwar, working-class Paris. He wandered around the streets of Paris looking for moments of SERENDIPITY to find him and it usually did. His work focused on the lives of everyday Parisians and is often praised for his HUMANISTIC approach. Will Ronis died in 2009 at the age of 99 but his work lives on as a brief IMMORTAL moment caught by the click of a camera.

SUBTITLEWILLY RONIS: A RETROSPECTIVE

I chose the exhibition name Don’t Blink to symbolize the approach of Willy Ronis’ photography that is based off of the importance of seeing the small, but significant, passing moments of everyday life. If you blink you might miss something.

I chose to use the typeface Futura because of its classic timeless qualities that also reflect the work of Willy Ronis. I decided to manipulate the letterform of the “N” in “Blink” to express a subtle message of being aware of the small details. If a viewer were to quickly glance over this logotype they might not even notice that the “N” was flipped. If a viewer takes the time to look at the piece, the message comes across in a subtle but sophisticated way.

After a lot of ideation, digital development, and critique I eventually arrived at a graphic element that was able to express the idea and meaning behind the exhibit, as well as being conceptually and visually engaging. I chose to create a repeat pattern of the exhibition title “Don’t Blink”. I chose to highlight certain words to give visual texture as well as carry on the theme of flipped letterforms to convey the idea of small flickering moments as represented in Ronis’ work.

This is the final interior environmental graphic. In addition to the logotype, I added the subtext which explains the artist and exhibit itself. I chose to include the subtext in French in addition to English because the exhibit would be shown in France and also because the artist himself was French. This is a common practice in many museums in France to have the subtext in the national language as well as English because it is such a common language and welcomes many international visitors.

This is the final exterior poster design. I decided to implement the graphic element used in the exhibition itself overlayed onto actual works of the artist. This creates an interesting visual experience for the viewer because the actual work of the artist is not completely visible and leads the viewer wanting more, drawing them to see the exhibition. I decided to create not one but three versions of the poster that would create even more interest in passersby.

This is the final narrative material. I decided to stick with the soft black and white theme to reflect the black and white photography of Willy Ronis. I decided to use the typeface, Bodoni to create a nice contrast to Futura that is used heavily in the exhibit. I decided to do this also to reflect the beautiful serif typography of the 40’s and 50’s seen all around Paris.
