Word from the Editor Ladies and gentlemen and all who care about entertainment or rather being entertained, welcome to Blink Xtra, the AdMag where all entertainment business in the country resides in harmony. The answers you seek; “what’s up, what’s happening, what’s on, what’s new, where to hang out, what’s hot…” are conveyed and detailed inside in a unique and interesting style and manner. The content is a tight collaboration between information and entertainment that can be well described in one word as “Info-tainment.” We are glad to be one of the few publications trying to add some spice to Kenya’s as well as East Africa’s night life. Inside our debut issue is an exclusive interview with Kenya’s Neo/Afro Soul finest and our cover feature Anto (see pages 8-9). Contrary to what many would have thought Anto is more into music rather than the big screen. Apart from infotaining, promoting local artistes especially those in the live music scene is a core goal we hold close to heart and Anto happens to one of them. Still on artistes, there is a new band in town. Well, not literally new but the mainstream is yet to get familiar with them like it should. The name is Elani made up of three absolutely talented artistes. Read more about them on pages 12-13. Do you know that Kenya has the 2nd most twitter users in Africa? South Africa is the only country ahead of Kenya. That being said, we decided to have a column inside this publication where we will be reviewing some of the most interesting Kenyan folks we follow on twitter and they may just make your twitter time worthwhile. That is just a taste of what is in store inside this publication. Once you begin flipping those glossy pages, I am sure infotained will sound more like an understatement. Remember to pick up a FREE copy of Blink Xtra each and every month at your nearest store. Have a great read.

Cheers!

Charles N. Rwabagina Editor-In-Chief

HOTEL REVIEW

The Exchange Bar stocks all major international newspapers and in keeping with its origins there is also a Reuters screen with the latest news and movements from major stock exchanges of the world. Pool Deck Restaurant

The Pool Deck Restaurant on the fifth floor is a little bit of the coast in the heart of the city. It's a light, bright, buffet style restaurant with al fresco dining by the swimming pool. It serves Kenyan specialties as well as popular continental and Asian dishes. On Sundays there is a special Barbeque Lunch (12.30pm - 3pm).

In-Room DiningThe hotel offers 24-hours room service with a special In-Room Dining menu.

in East Africa. With its traditional Thai decor and delectable Thai specialties prepared by experi-enced chefs from Thailand, Thai Chi is one of Nairobi's most ele-gant dining establishments. Please view 'Thai Chi Polite Notice'.

The Exchange Bar

History comes to life at The Exchange Bar, once the site of Nai-robi's first Stock Exchange, from 1954 until 1991. In 1922, The Long Bar,the Stanley's precursor to The Exchange Bar, famously took deliv-ery of the first ever order from the newly formed Kenya Breweries, makers of such famous local brews as Tusker and Pilsner, and now the largest brewery in the country.

The Exchange Bar retains the feel of a traditional English gentle-man's club with its decor while ex-uding a casual elegance and warm atmosphere that provides a lively meeting place for people from all walks of life. A perfect place to en-joy a single malt and fine cigar or sensational cocktails accompanied with a variety of bar snacks.

Thorn Tree CafeThe Thorn Tree Cafe is a legendary open-air, bistro style pavement cafe and is most famous for its message board located at the centre of the restaurant. Legend purports that the Thorn tree cafe - named for a single centrally situ-ated Acacia tree - became a make-shift post box for travelers who left mail pinned onto its trunk. 'Tree mail' endures despite email and the Thorn tree Cafe flourishes as the crossroads of Africa. From time immemorial the cafe has been the perfect meeting place for friends and offers a remarkable dining experience in the central business district. It has a deli counter, serves pizzas from a wood-fired oven, fresh juices, beers, the widest range of coffees and a varied menu which includes popular continental and nouvelle dishes.

Thai Chi

A small piece of Thailand in Nai-robi, Thai Chi has been awarded as the most authentic Thai restaurant

COVER STORY

Music is my first love and I knew how to sing before I could act so, I would choose music any day. Music allows me to be just me and I am not prohibited from discuss-ing anything vocally and I evolve into who I aim to be. I can also sing anywhere even in the streets while as far as acting is concerned, I am limited to the number of jobs I can get and it’s so cut throat that sometimes I don’t want to get caught in the drama of auditions and trying to please producers. I want to be me without inhibitions though I love acting because I can tell stories and through my character I represent many people out there who either believe in the character or are similar to the character.

Do the roles that you have played in both MTV produced ‘Shuga’ and the local soap opera ‘Siri’ describe you? In SHUgA, I play the character Kennedy the Remedy and as far as a comedian, I don’t think Anto (I) is a comedian. I am fun loving though and just like Kennedy I have made mistakes in my life most ignorantly but I have learnt to forget my mistakes and moved on. Kennedy is always drinking and partying and showing off while on the other hand Anto is proud of his successes but not a show off and I rarely go out. Been there done that and wore the hang over T-shirt so am moving on.Ten years ago only a few people would have taken interest in a

Music Award nominee is currently working on his debut album which he promises will be a sophisticated mix of live music and a must-listen to all those that appreciate music.

Describe Anto in 3 words…. god fearing. Passionate. Hardworking

If you were to choose between music and acting which one would you go for?

you have probably seen him on Tv on the local soap opera “SIRI” or on the MTv

produced “SHUgA” or most promi-nently heard his soulful vocals. He’s an actor, MC and a great artiste. He’s indeed a household name in the entertainment scene. Antony Mwangi aka Antoneosoul is one of the country’s keenest neo-soul artiste and some of the lovers of the genre have described him as the Kenyan John Legend. The 2009 “My video” MTv Africa

I wrote “Chips Funga” because of what I have seen from other people’s experiences and it’s such a huge issue in Kenya though we take it lightly.

I am sure most ladies read-ing this would love to know if you’re single? I am blessed to have an amazing lady, best friend, lover and soul mate “Sunshine Siteiya” by my side so I am taken.

I am also involved in “Natem-bea” (I am walking) Campaign which seeks local support and funding to buy shoes for those less privileged children in rural areas to lessen the jigger men-ace in the country especially in the rural areas.I believe that giving back to society is important because it reminds us that we are greatly blessed by god and need to make less privileged people’s lives more sustain-able in anyway that we can.

Which new music have you recently added to your playlist?Late nights and early morn-ings by Marsha Ambrosius, set fire to the rain by Adele, alone together and game over both by Daley and all of Nneka’s music.

What inspires your music?I know it is very cliché but every-day life inspires me. I remember my background and how far my family has come and I think that it is important that people know that story so that I can also inspire them. I am inspired by stories my grandmother told me and I try to retell those love, warrior, family, relationships stories in a way that I only understand, music.

Your vocals are just amazing. Have you always sounded like that? I am humbled. Wow. For the longest time I have actually fought with accepting the sound of my voice but then I realised that my voice came from god and I have every right to be self aware but also very grateful of the gift bestowed on me. A friend told me that if she had my voice, she’d simply thank god everyday. My voice is my power, the ultimate gift from the highest power.

“Chips Funga” is an awesome song. Did you write it from your own experience?

neo-soul artist but the story is quite different now.

What do you think has influ-enced these changes?I think ten years back, it wasn’t cool to do what was considered different or “artsy” deep, soulful stuff but there has been a great revolution through the art spaces that have allowed artistes to express themselves as they wish in whatever genre and we have constantly pushed for people to either love our music or love our music and it’s working.

Tell us about Paragasha… Paragasha first and foremost means – words fail. That said sometimes I realised I actu-ally don’t have words to explain this child of mine but hey (sigh) Paragasha is a monthly musical platform that happens every last Tuesday of the month at Club Soundd and in this establishment, we get to give upcoming and already established musicians a chance to connect to fun loving musical connoisseurs by perform-ing for them – the catch is that they perform live – even those without bands get to play with my band who learn their songs and plays for them on stage. They are then exposed to this new crowd who are 99% positive in their response and encourage them to know they can go far if they keep pushing. I am hoping that in the long term this will be a festival that brings new sounds and voices from all over Africa in one space

You have been involved in several social empowerment initiatives. Is it something you hold at heart? I know of pain and I understand the plight of those suffering and that is why I am involved in AAMANI and BASIC RIgHTS both initiatives meant to highlight the plight of mentally disabled and I think that they are so misunder-stood and have been forgotten by the community.

FEATURE STORY

Basically it depends on how you are partying and what you are looking for at the party. Westlands provides serious entertainment throughout the whole weekend. Best entertain-ment is provided by Changes pub. I do Changes every Thursday and it is usually seriously packed, lovely crowd, good music, live video mixing, free shots, live requests on the big screens via

AvRIL I’m hardly the going out type because I get to work at night performing and making appear-ances, but when I do get time to hang out with my friends and listen to some nice music, I prefer heading off to Westlands. My most favourite joints would have

MIMMO I like Skylux in Westlands because of the ambience and also the fan-tastic deejays like Dj Kaydee who I think is super talented. I also like gallileo especially on Fridays and Saturday’s because the music there is really good not to men-tion the grown and sexy crowd...

LADy BEEWestlands does it for me. There are a lot of options there but it depends on what kind of fun you want to have. I think most of the classy joints are in Westlands.

BAMZIgIOK. I don’t go out much anymore but when I do it’s usually around 6am. And Westlands is definitely the place to be especially at Bac-chus when Dj’s are playing till late and I also like Changes with Kaytrixx, apart from that I prefer house parties.

CBD’s only advantage is the avail-ability of transport back to wher-ever it is you are coming from, that is if you don’t have a car.

to be Skylux, Bacchus and Taboo. I go out to blow off some steam and it’s usually the music and the company that I have that does that. I particularly love the music and decor of the mentioned places so it’s tranquillity through and through.

Tweeps of The MonTh

Top Tweeps of the Month according toTop Tweeps of the Month according to@BlinkXtraSunny BIndra (@SunnySunWOrdS)

Sunny is a very interesting character to follow on Twitter. Perhaps he has gained more credit with the introduction of the now famous “hash tags” #TwitterBigStick and #TwitterThumbsUp. With this, the writer together with others are able to call out any kind of misconduct, most commonly reckless driving, as well as commend those doing a good job. Here is one such tweet: “Diplomats in KE (1): Do you really think traffic rules don’t apply to you in Kenya? #TwitterBigStick.”

COnrad Gray (@GMOnEyIzME)@gMONEyizME is the Jamaican link to Kenya. He has helped homeboyz entertainment host international and dynamic reggae and dancehall artistes in Kenya including Alaine, Cecile, and Christopher Martin, among others. @gMONEyizME was one of the first radio

presenters in Kenya to engage listeners via his Twitter account. As of press time he had a staggering 62,721 tweets.

MOSES MBaSu (@ItSBuddHaBlazE)I keep up with what’s going on in the entertainment industry simply by following @ItsBuddhaBlaze. He somehow knows that important person in town, he has the info of the coolest live shows and sometimes he’s even the one organising the event. He was one of the organisers of

the recent event at goethe Institute that featured Nigerian sensation Nneka.dan ndaMBukI (@MWalIMuCHurCHIl)

Kenyan tweets would not be funnier if @mwalimuchurchil was not on Twitter. His humorous tweets are unmatchable. I remember waking up to this tweet of his on Dec. 26: “It’s now 370 days to Christmas. Can’t wait!! #TweetZaKiupuzi.” It made my day. Another tickling tweet he posted

at the end of January: “Error 522: Data on January is corrupt. Please press Esc or Ok to return to January 1 and start again.”GraCE MakOSEWE (@MakOSEWE)

I love her energy. Her tweets are full of positivity. I always say you can always tell the type of a person one is by what he/she tweets and retweets. Her tweets include different fashion events and parties that she runs through her company Nairobi

vIP (@nairobivip). She is also campaigning to be this year’s Big Brother Africa Kenya representative. Other notable female tweeters include @kenyanpundit and @akenyangirl.

SafarICOM (@SafarICOMltd)Kenyan Safaricom is one of the many companies that have jumped on the social network bus but one of the few that is fully utilising the power of social media. The company is quick to respond to its customers’ tweets, and that explains why it has a huge number of

followers compared to other mobile networks. As of press time, @safaricomLtd followers were 43,773 followed by @orangekenya with 3,939, @Airtel_KE with 2,737, and @yuKenya with 1,678.

aly-kHan SatCHu (@alykHanSatCHu)@alykhansatchu is one character you need to follow, perhaps if you follow financial matters the better. I always expect a tweet from him explaining how the Kenyan shilling is behaving towards other currencies. I guess his tweets are the reason why I’m barely

interested in the evening business news.

We will continue highlighting the most interesting characters on Twitter in the next issue. You can send your comments, opinions as well as who you think people need to follow and we just might feature him/her on this page.

BAND CHECK

in stone. There is never a format followed. Inspiration is drawn from any situation by any member of the group. Some of our songs are written within minutes, some take days, weeks – sometimes months. It’s all about inspiration – it comes from the heart and each one of us is a songwriter in their own right. It could start with one line of a song that one of us can’t get out of our heads, or it could start with a chord progression that one of us thought sounded beautiful – there is no procedure. It is art – it somehow creates itself really.

How many songs have you done so far and which one received the most acclaim? We have written over 50 songs to date. Some of them have never even been performed! One song which has received quite a bit of praise is a song called “Barua ya Dunia” – translated to mean “A Letter To The World.”

It is a song in which we ask people to be respectful to others, even when they are down, because we never know what will happen tomorrow - the world can turn around and he who was on top might find himself at the bottom of the heap.

We believe that it is a song which many people can relate to, after having been the subject of insults and ridicule when they found themselves in a bad situation.

to inspire the people around us, to be their light as it were. The name is a symbol of inspiration and motivation.

I know you are not that new per-se, how long has Elani been around? We formed the group in February 2008, but we were not too serious about it in the beginning and would meet and sing just for fun. By mid-2008, as we got closer as friends and better as musicians, we all came to the realization that music was something that we truly and earnestly wanted to pursue, on a professional level and we began performing more often and taking it much more seriously.

How did you guys meet up?We met at the Alliance Française in Nairobi, which was a haven for new musical talent at that time. The Alliance Française garden was full of musicians and poets, writers and artistes of every kind, every day. It was an extremely inspiring place to be as an artiste – a hub of artistic activity. We met soon after we all completed our high school education and that is where we grew as a musical unit.

How do you go about your creative process? Who does what in the group? Our creative process is not set

There is a new urban sound in town. Standing out as young, funky and fresh

Elani, comprising of Maureen Kunga, Wambui Ngugi and Bryan Chweya is a band that you all need to check out. Their average age sums up to 22 but their music is incredibly mature and can be performed for any crowd. The trio is recording their first album with a label that has produced some brilliant acts such as Sauti Sol, Just A Band and Dela. The BLINK posed a few questions for the band…

Who is Elani…?Elani is an Urban-Afro musical group based in Nairobi. It is comprised of three young artistes who have a musical dream and want nothing more than to make their mark on the world and to spread a message of hope, love and responsibility through their music. We also hope to be good examples to young people in the world that they can and should follow their dreams, whatever dreams those may be.

Why the name Elani? Is there a meaning behind it?Elani is a giriama word which means Light. We chose this word because we felt that it signified what we wanted to be. We wanted
