OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP Americans have an uncomfortable rela onship with kings. The American Revolu on was fought for independence from King George, a er all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our na onal loyal es and rejoice in our primary iden ty. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul re-minds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beau ful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925, Pope Pius XI was distressed by global poli cal upheaval and the de-Chris anizing of society. That year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the sixteen hundredth anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, when the words “and of his kingdom there will be no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope explained that although most feasts had developed over many centuries, the Church some mes provided a new feast to address new needs. He pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, showing Christ’s love and compassion in a me when many people embraced a cold and gloomy spirituality. Originally on the last Sunday of October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ the King was moved to the last Sun-day of the year. Fresh from bap sm’s waters, we are anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our iden ty. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our deeds of love and service. —James Field, Copyright © J. En el con nente Americano encontramos imágenes de Cristo en las montañas como Cristo Redentor en Brasil, o Cristo de los Andes, entre Chile y Argen na, o el Cristo Rey en Colombia; todos observando calladamente pesares y progresos de sus pueblos y na-ciones. En toda La noamérica se grita esperanzadamente “Viva Cristo Rey”. La Iglesia universal honra a Cristo con el tulo de Rey solo desde 1925, pero siempre tuvo la certeza que el pobre Jesús de Nazaret es nuestro Maestro y Señor y, contra él no pueden las fuerzas del mal ni la injus cia. Terminando el año litúrgico, es justo y necesario recordar y festejar que Jesús reina para siempre. En La noamérica y en todas partes donde la injus cia parece dominar, Cristo Rey es con nuo recuer-do de la promesa divina; de la esperanza de un mundo mejor no allá en el cielo sino aquí en la erra reno-vada. Dear Fellow Parishioners, RETIRED!!!
You are probably aware that I was diagnosed with brain cancer in April. A er undergoing surgery and a regimen of chemotherapy and radia on over the summer, I was hopeful that I could return to my du es. Unfortunately, ongoing fa gue as a result of these treatments and con nued chemotherapy protocol has le me unable to be fully engaged in my du es as a Deacon. Thus, I officially re red from my job at the Archdiocese and have let Fr. Bill know that I am unable to con nue my work as a Deacon at All Saints….at least for now. Ann and I have great confidence in the team of doctors and medical staff who have been trea ng me. And while we do not know the outcome that lies ahead, we have great confidence in God's love and healing grace. My faith is strong. All Saints Parish is a great place to prac ce my faith. I have had a conversa on with the Lord, and I said I would try to do His will on this journey – His will and not my will. The Lord Jesus, who went about doing good works and healing sickness and infirmity of every kind, commanded his disciples to care for the sick, to pray for them, and to lay hands on them. … He will enable them to bear their pain and suffering in the knowledge that, if they accept their share in the pain of His own passion, they will also share in its power to give comfort and strength. - Book of Blessing. No. 383 We have been overwhelmed by the level of concern, love, support, and prayers of family and friends. Thank you all. Altar Society Members of the Altar Society took me to joyfully gi wrap care packages for their long me adopted program of the Christmas Box Drive for the Port of Houston Seafarer's Center. These gi boxes li the spirits of the seamen who are away from their families over the holidays. This is a project that the altar society has been doing for many years. Thank you for your me and efforts! Bake Sale! Nov. 23rd & 24th The All Saints Altar Society will hold a bake sale on Nov. 23rd and 24th a er all Masses. Please come and help support the altar society. We are asking parishioners to help us bake cakes, pies, cupcakes and cookies. If you can help, please bring items on Sat. a er 4:00 pm or on Sun. a er 8:00 am. The altar society is responsible for buying hosts and wine for Mass, providing vestments for the priest and deacons and for cleaning the church every week.
