Our Lady of the Lake Mission Statement Bound by a unifying love of Christ and one another,

we share the Good News of the Gospel through prayer, Eucharist, education and service.

8th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs

from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes

from brambles. — Luke 6:44

We Are Known By Our Fruit This week, Jesus tells us that we must examine our inner selves, our attitudes and dispositions, virtues and faults, rather than judging others. What is in our hearts comes out in what and how we speak. If our hearts are filled with kindness and compassion, those qualities will be evident in our speaking, just as beautiful, wholesome fruit comes only from healthy trees. And vice-versa. The Wisdom writer, Sirach, in the first reading agrees with this concept—that we will be judged by our words. Paul reminds us that the reward of discipleship is eternal life. Today’s psalm of thanksgiving and praise reminds us of God’s kindness and faithfulness, which we are to emulate in our thoughts, words, and deeds. We are known, each of us, by our own fruit. Prayer of the Week: 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time Grant us, O Lord, we pray,

that the course of our world may be directed by Your peaceful rule

and that Your Church may rejoice, untroubled in her devotion.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.

Readings: Holy Family

First Reading — One’s speech shows the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks (Sirach 27:4-7).

Psalm — Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92).

Second Reading — We are given victory over death through Jesus. In the Lord our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:54-59).

Gospel — A good person produces good, an evil person produces evil. The mouth speaks from the goodness of the heart (Luke 6:39-45).

VIRTUS for Safe Environment

The Archdiocese of New Orleans has implemented the VIRTUS® Programs as its new comprehensive safe environment training platform for adults and children. In summary, the Protecting God’s Children® Program will be the official training for employees and volunteers. The corresponding VIRTUS Online database is an online portal that provides access to your safe environment account. All archdiocesan users will have access to their previous training records within the database. If you had an existing account on CMG, your USERNAME is the same. Please use it rather than creating a new account. When it is time for you to complete a training document, to obtain recertification training or conduct a background check, you will receive automatic email notification from the VIRTUS website to access your account. The system will refer all users to the background check portal as necessary. All staff and volunteers must log-in to the new system to verify your information is correct and to review and acknowledge the updated policies for the protection of children, youth and vulnerable adults.

Here is the link: https://www.nolacatholic.org/virtus-training. If you have questions, please contact Bonnie at 985-626-5671 x107.

Candle Offerings: IMPORTANT!

Due to rising costs, we must increase the offering for the red candles from $3 to $5 as of March 1st. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

Lent Preparing for Lent: Frequently Asked Questions

Q Why do we say that there are forty days of Lent? When you count all the days, it doesn’t add up.

A It might be more accurate to say that there is the "forty day fast within Lent.” Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three

weeks to the present configuration. The forty day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.

Q So does that mean that when we give something up for Lent, such as candy, we can have it on Sundays?

A Apart from the prescribed days of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and the days of abstinence every

Friday of Lent, Catholics have traditionally chosen additional penitential practices for the whole Time of Lent. These practices are disciplinary in nature and often more effective if they are continuous, i.e., kept on Sundays as well. That being said, such practices are not regulated by the Church, but by individual conscience.

Q I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but I'm not sure what is classified as

meat. Does meat include chicken and dairy products?

A Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs --- all of which live on land. Birds are

also considered meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.

Q I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the

rules for these fasts?

A Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if

necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.

Q Are there exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?

A Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill, including those suffering

from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Respect Life Ministry Spiritual Adoption Week 27: Your little one’s brain continues its rapid growth. Response to sound grows more consistent toward the end of the seventh month, when the network of nerves to the ear is complete. Your baby’s lungs continue to grow and prepare for functioning outside of the womb. He also continues to take small breaths, and although he’s only breathing in water and not air, it’s still good practice for when he’s born. Your baby’s eyelids are now more open. Your baby can distinguish between light and dark. Your baby will grow over 1/2-inch per week! You suspect this phenomenal growth rate repeats in the preteen years! Your baby is now 14.4 inches long and 1.9 pounds.

Each couple will receive a certificate and a picture with Archbishop Aymond. Please note: This celebration will not be a Mass, but a Prayer Service. Attendance of Mass for Sunday obligation will have to be met within one’s respective parish. If you wish to attend this celebration or be recognized in our parish bulletin, please contact Aimee in the PLC at 626-5671 x4116 for registration forms prior to Wednesday, March 9, 2022. For parish recognition, please bring in or email to [email protected] a picture from your wedding day and a current picture. We will run these in our bulletin sometime in June.

Confraternity of Christian Mothers The Confraternity of Christian Mothers will have an induction for new members in a beautiful candlelight ceremony with Fr. Vincent presiding on Thursday, March 3rd at 6:30 PM. All current members are encouraged to join and support our new members and renew their own commitments to being Christian wives, mothers, and women of the community. The ceremony will take place at the Grotto behind the church. If inclement weather occurs, the induction will be held in the cafeteria. A potluck dinner will follow in the cafeteria.

2022 Men’s Conference The 2022 Archdiocese of New Orleans Men’s Conference will be on Saturday, March 12th at St. Catherine of Siena in Metairie. All men of our parish are invited to attend! The day will include empowering speakers, prayer, Mass, and reconciliation, to help men to reflect on what it means to be “Sons of the Father.” We hope this day fires up the men of our parish to grow in their love for Christ, their families, one another, and to take their place in the life of the Church! Tickets are $45. Light breakfast, lunch and t-shirt are included. To register and learn more about the 2022 NOLA Men’s Conference, visit nolacatholicmen.com.

Ministry News Finance Council My name is Steven Toups and I am the Chairman of the Our Lady of the Lake Finance Council. The Finance Council assists, advises and consults with Father Doug on financial matters associated with the parish. Archdiocesan policy states that members of the Finance Council should be skilled in the areas of finance, law or administration and not be related to employees of the parish nor have extensive business relationships with the parish. The Finance Council meets about 4-6 times a year with each meeting lasting about an hour. We currently have 4 members of the Finance Council and are looking for someone with experience in commercial insurance to join the Finance Council. If you are interested in learning more about this rewarding opportunity to apply your talents for the betterment of the parish, email me at [email protected].
