OUR 2ND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND WILL BE FOR THE SUPPORT OF OUR SCHOOL

Eucharist and PentecostToday we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost - the Third Glorious Mystery of the Rosary: The Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Mary gathered in the Upper Room after the Ascension of the Lord. We recall the tongues of fire, the timid gathering courage and speaking to great crowds and being heard in each person’s native language.

The work of the Holy Spirit became abundantly visible and felt. But the Gifts of the Holy Spirit do not only enhance our relationships with one another and give an added ability to overcome earthly challenges. They also enhance our relationship with God, binding us more closely to the Church and enabling true worship and persistent awareness of God.

So many of us tend to forget to pray or fall out of the habit of maintaining an awareness of God as we go about our lives. We can really lean on those Gifts of the Holy Spirit for help! Allow me to share three quick stories about the working of the Holy Spirit towards an awareness and reverence for the Eucharist.

St. Anthony of Padua knew of a certain man named Bononillo who did not really believe in the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. He devised an experiment and bet the man that if he starved his mule for three days and then offered the animal a choice between eating hay or adoring Jesus in the Eucharist, the mule would certainly choose the hay. St. Anthony also fasted during that time for the conversion of this man. On that day in the town square, they set up the test: a pile of fresh hay, and St. Anthony holding the Eucharist. The mule noticed the hay, but did not go for it. Instead, it walked over to St. Anthony holding the Eucharist and knelt down!

Pope St. John Paul II was on a tight schedule during a visit to a certain diocese where the bishop had a private chapel. His aides knew that if he discovered the chapel, they would be delayed, as the Pope would be compelled to stop and pray. As they walked through the halls on the way to their next meeting, they passed the unmarked door to the chapel. John Paul II took one step past the door and stopped. He shook his finger at the aides, rebuking them for trying to hide Jesus from him, and entered the chapel to pray.

Our founder, Venerable Bruno Lanteri, OMV, had a hole cut in the wall of his room during his final illness so that he could see through it into the church and see the tabernacle and the red sanctuary lamp burning there. He was close to Jesus in prayer, but he also wanted to be able to see Jesus with his own eyes.

Each of these saints helped to demonstrate that habit of a persistent closeness to the Lord by the gift of the Holy Spirit - a way of maintaining that focus in our minds and hearts centered around the Lord Himself and the places He is present in this world.

Whether you come to Eucharistic Adoration or stop into the Church as you make your way around town, or make the sign of the cross as you pass a Catholic Church, keep that focus. Invite the Holy Spirit to fill your heart and keep you aware of Jesus’ presence on this earth. Then we will miss no opportunity to adore Him, and be prepared ever more for our final reunion with Him in Heaven!

Fr. Paul Nguyen, OMV

PENTECOST SUNDAYFocus: Today is Pentecost, the birthday of the Church,

honoring the coming of the Spirit into our midst. The early Church was expanded when the resurrected Jesus left his disciples, promising to send the Holy Spirit to be with them on earth. Empowered by his presence among them, they began preaching the word even though they faced many challenges. The people listened and were baptized, and the Church was born.

In the first reading, the Apostles are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin speaking in different languages. Paul writes to the Corinthians that there is only one Spirit, but he bestows many spiritual gifts on the family of God. In the Gospel, Jesus comes to the disciples in the locked room, offers them peace, and breathes on them, saying, receive the Holy Spirit.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCHPART ONE - THE PROFESSION OF FAITH

SECTION TWO – THE CREEDS I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER

THE HOLY TRINITY IN THE TEACHING OF THE FAITHTHE DIVINE WORKS AND THE TRINITARIAN MISSIONS

279. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”116 Holy Scripture begins with these solemn words. the profession of faith takes them up when it confesses that God the Father almighty is “Creator of heaven and earth” (Apostles’ Creed), “of all that is, seen and unseen” (Nicene Creed). We shall speak first of the Creator, then of creation and finally of the fall into sin from which Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to raise us up again.

More details coming soon!

PRAY WITH MARY FOR VOCATIONS!!The traveling statue of Mary, Our Lady of Grace is a program to encourage families to come together to pray for vocations and to encourage young people to be open to their own vocation to the priesthood or religious life, especially as Oblates of the Virgin Mary. Contact the parish office to reserve either of the statues for one week (Sunday – Friday)!During that week, gather around the statue daily and use the Lanteri Prayer booklet to pray for vocations along with any other prayers of your choosing. Invite our Oblates to come pray with you, too!

FATHER’S DAY NOVENAFather’s Day is June 19th. Consider enrolling your father in the spiritual bouquet of Masses to be celebrated at St. Mary’s for the 5 days after Father’s Day. Cards can be picked up in the back of church or at the parish office. Please write your father’s name on the envelope and return it with your free-will offering to the parish office. If your father is deceased you need only take the envelope to list her name. You may list more than one name on each envelope. The envelopes will be tied together and placed on the altar during the novena. Please have all requests submitted no later than Wednesday, June 15th.

Deacon Leland Thorpe is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

When asked about his decision to join the Oblates, Deacon Leland said, “I first visited the Oblates in January of 2012, and over the course of the following two years the call to follow Ven. Bruno Lanteri became stronger and stronger. I visited again in March of 2014, and it was on that visit that I made the decision to begin formation.”

Deacon Leland enjoys reading, going for long runs, and exploring parks in his spare time. However, he will drop everything to play Ultimate Frisbee when he gets the opportunity.

Some of his favorite foods are Meatloaf, mashed potatoes (with peas and corn mixed in!), and breakfast. His favorite sweets are strawberry rhubarb pie, chocolate chip cookies, and dark chocolate. While there aren’t many foods he won’t eat, liver is one he has trouble with, “no amount of hot sauce has ever made it appetizing.”

A fun fact about Deacon Leland is he has visited four continents, and lived on two of them.

Deacon Leland was asked what he likes best about being part of St. Mary’s, and he said, “I love that St. Mary’s is such a family parish! With the school and the special activities around here, we get to spend time with and minister to families across generations and even become a part of those families.”

Deacon Leland had this to say about coming back to St. Mary’s, “It’s so good to be back! Returning here has really felt like a homecoming. I’m so grateful to God that I’ll begin my priesthood here at St. Mary’s with all of you.”
