Looking Forward to Better Days …and Baseball!

It’s that time of year again when we look forward to our longtime tradition of cheering on the Cardinals with children and families served by Catholic Charities agencies.

Last year, we watched excitedly as a young Go to Bat for Kids fan joined Cardinals legend Al Hrabosky to record a Go to Bat for Kids 2020 television commercial.

Then, everything changed…

The games were not played in front of a crowd of loyal fans. The commercial never aired. In its place, a video message from then-Archbishop of St. Louis Robert J. Carlson reminded us to have faith, to hope, and to care for those struggling due to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the pandemic heroes at Catholic Charities were our Go to Bat for Kids donors, who overwhelmingly stepped up to the plate by moving their 2020 gifts to our annual fund, supporting our mission during one of the most challenging years in recent history for people in need.

With optimism that better days are ahead, we are hoping to host Go to Bat for Kids games in the latter part of the baseball season. We expect plenty of excitement, with the return of fan favorite Yadier Molina and a warm St. Louis welcome to Nolan Arenado.

We invite you to share in our optimism! Sponsoring a child is just $26 and includes admission, hot dog, and soda. If you can help create memories for one or more child, please send your donation today by mailing the form below or by making an online gift at www.go2bat4kids.org.

If, due to ongoing pandemic concerns, we are unable to host games or provide other Cardinals experiences, 2021 Go to Bat for Kids funds will be directed to child-focused programs. Optionally, refunds may be requested after the conclusion of the season by contacting Amanda Dunnavant at 314-256-5907 or [email protected].

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

I pray you are sustained by God’s gifts of Faith, Hope, and Love as we enter a second year wearing masks and practicing social distancing. These have been difficult days and I trust that the Lord will see us through.

Serving and AdvocatingInspired by the teachings of Jesus, and supported by generous people like you, we continue Serving people in need, Advocating for public policy that affirms human dignity, and Calling Others to join in our mission. The infographic below illustrates a sampling of how in 2020 we were able to serve our neighbors most impacted by COVID-19. While these are December 31 figures, assistance continues. In this issue, you will see other ways our agencies continue providing the best possible experiences for those in their care. Our advocacy efforts (see page 7) give a voice to those we serve, whose voices too often go unheard. This work is led by Director of Advocacy & Community Engagement Tamara Kenny, JD, MSW. Tamara’s unique credentials and personal passion make her a popular presenter at local Catholic and community events. Tamara’s work is informed and supported by our Federation Advocacy Council and the Catholic Charities of St. Louis Board’s Mission and Advocacy Committee.

WelcomeSince our last Community Call, we added two new Catholic Charities team members: Director of Operations Bill Reichmuth and Chief Financial & Operations Officer Gary Kacich. We are blessed by the tremendous experience and enthusiasm they bring to the Central Office. We also welcomed a new Good Shepherd Children & Family Services Executive Director, Kathy Fowler. It is a happy homecoming for Kathy, who earlier in her career spent time at the agency as a caseworker and therapist.

FarewellOn a sadder note, Marygrove Director of Maintenance Brant Tate was tragically killed on January 26. Marygrove CEO Joe

Bestgen called Brant – a beloved 35-year employee -- a gentle man and a servant to others who will be greatly missed. Please join us in our continued prayers for the repose of Brant’s soul and for is family. I would like to leave you with an excerpt from our February employee newsletter Mission Message by Director of Mission Integration Deacon Brian Selsor: The virtues of Faith and Hope go hand in hand with Charity, sometimes referred to as Love. Charity, by the Christian definition, is the highest level of love, the love of God, in which we are able to participate. How beautiful that Charity guides our mission! We are called to care for those in need as brothers and sisters, just as God cares for us all as His children. Love compels us to provide comfort and aid now; it fosters concern for our clients’ future wellbeing, in this life and in the eternal life to come!Thank you for answering our call to the mission, providing that comfort and aid to people so greatly in need. I wish you a Most Blessed Lent and Easter Season.

With sincere gratitude and joy,

Theresa E. Ruzicka, CPAPresident, Catholic Charities of St. Louis

GOOD NEWSFrom Our Federated Agencies

Children who witness domestic violence may experience emotional, cognitive, and/or developmental delays. The Saint Martha’s Hall Children’s Program provides therapy and other interventions to promote healing and to help families break the cycle of violence in their lives. This includes twice-weekly children’s support groups, weekly parenting support groups, and one-on-one work to develop and accomplish family goals while in shelter.

A monthly Community Night provides an opportunity for recreation and bonding for the women and children staying in the shelter. It’s a time for families to pause, be together, and form new, healthy family connections. Forming these memories is what makes Saint Martha’s Hall a home!

Mothers and children at Saint Martha’s Hall created tissue paper “stained glass” windows at the February Community Night.

In 2020, Saint Louis Counseling launched the College Coaching Program to help students set and achieve academic, social, and personal goals. Students are paired with a coach – either a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) or licensed professional counselor (LPC) – to access resources and develop the life skills and accountability needed to be successful and independent.

If you know a college student who is struggling with time management, procrastination, transitioning to campus living, balancing fun with studying and working, test anxiety, finding their niche or making new friends, they may be a good candidate for the College Coaching Program.

Students may be eligible to receive a grant for services. Learn more at saintlouiscounseling.org/coaching-program or contact Debbie Dugan, ddugan@ccstlorg, 314.748.5658.

(right) Saint Louis Counseling College Coach Emily Olivos is able to meet with students wherever they are via tele-sessions.

Since March 2020, the Marygrove campus has been closed to visitors while children in residential programs shelter in place due to COVID-19. The agency worked swiftly last year to prepare about 140 students for virtual learning. In almost every space of every building you can find learners, along with the staff members who help them navigate their online classrooms.

The unforeseen cost of providing on-campus virtual learning was recently estimated to be over $362,000 so far, which includes additional staffing, technology, and disinfecting supplies. Despite the added challenges and expenses, Marygrove is committed to providing the best resources possible to help children and young adults thrive – physically, emotionally, and academically – during this especially trying time.

Marygrove IT Help Desk & Training Specialist Shalonda Taylor helps assure children have the proper technology to successfully participate in online school.

When we are hurting, our loved ones hurt, too. This is why in addition to serving women addressing substance use disorders, Queen of Peace Center offers a variety of supportive services for family members. This includes the Nurturing Networks Therapeutic Childcare Center.

This unique childcare center welcomes children, from six weeks to five years old, whose mothers are in active treatment and recovery. In addition to providing traditional childcare, the center incorporates case management, therapy, and structured evidence-based play.

Children of all ages can receive similar services outside the childcare center. To provide the best long-term outcomes, there is no time limit for accessing these services.

Anticipating the severe cold in February, St. Patrick Center collaborated with community partners to open a temporary “safe haven” inside St. Patrick Center. The shelter served more than 50 people, including 12 with frostbite or weather-related illness. People without housing are three times as likely to have chronic illnesses, making them more susceptible to COIVD-19 complications.

All were welcome, no questions asked.

“It doesn’t matter what someone has done or is doing,” said St. Patrick Center CEO Anthony D’Agostino “They’re human beings, they have dignity, and they don’t deserve to be on the streets when it’s negative zero temperatures.”

The shelter remained open for 11 days; guests were then placed in alternative shelters or hotel rooms.

“We responded to the crisis and must now build upon it by making a permanent safe haven in St. Louis,” said D’Agostino.

Volunteer Rachel Mazzara checks temperatures for people visiting the safe haven temporary shelter.

Residents and staff members at Cardinal Ritter Senior Services (CRSS) have received their first and second rounds of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, an exciting step toward protecting those most at risk and helping the community at large combat the pandemic. COVID-19 protocols – including wearing masks and heightened daily sanitation – will continue to be followed in all CRSS buildings.

We are grateful to the healthcare workers who visited to administer these critical vaccines. Residents, family members, and employees remain hopeful for a safer and more social future. Please keep them in your prayers!

Cardinal Ritter Senior Services CEO Chris Baechle joined his mother, a resident at Mary, Queen and Mother Center (a CRSS skilled nursing community) for their first COVID-19 vaccines.

The Church Calls Us to Advocate for Those We Serve

Guided by Catholic social teaching – and informed by Catholic Charities USA, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and the Missouri Catholic Conference – Catholic Charities of St. Louis encourages public policy that defends and honors the life and dignity of all people.

We advocate for our clients, many of whom are poor, homeless, living with mental illness and addressing substance use disorders, victims of domestic violence, seniors, and children. We advocate for our agencies, who support and accompany our clients as they work for the lives they dream of.

Our annual policy goals affirm that every person, including those too often marginalized by our society, is created in the image and likeness of God and should be treated accordingly.

In 2021, we are focusing on policies designed to strengthen families and foster racial equity, as well as specific policies that impact the physical, mental, and economic wellbeing of people we serve.

Why do we advocate?

From Catholic Charities USA: “The mission of Catholic Charities is to provide service to people need, to advocate for justice in social structures and to call the entire church and other people of good will to do the same.”

From Deus Caritas Est (“God is Love,” Pope Benedict XVI, 2005): “The direct duty to work for a just ordering of society is proper to the lay faithful” (no. 29).

From Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States:“The Catholic community brings important assets to the political dialogue about our nation’s future. We bring a consistent moral framework -- drawn from basic human reason that is illuminated by Scripture and the teaching of the Church-for assessing issues [and] political platforms . . .” (p.15).

“In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. The obligation to participate in political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do” (p. 16).

How can I learn more andget involved?

• Follow our advocacy activity, review our annual public policy priorities, and sign up to receive Action Alerts at www.ccstl.org/get-involved-advocacy

• Invite a Catholic Charities speaker to your parish, parish organization, or other group. Our subject matter experts can present on general Catholic social teaching, public policy and advocacy, generational poverty, immigration, racial equity, domestic violence, homlessness, and more.

• Look for other opportunities to learn and advocate by following Catholic Charities of St. Louis, the Missouri Catholic Conference, and the USCCB on social media.

• Take time before elections to evaluate candidates and ballot initiatives through the lens of Catholic social teaching.

“The conscience is called by this social teaching to recognize and fulfill the obligations of justice and charity in society.”

–Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, no. 83

“Social justice. . . concerns the social, political, and economic aspects and, above all, the structural dimension of problems and their respective solutions.”

“To [those who lack what they need to live a dignified life] are proclaimed glad tidings that God loves them…and comes to visit them through the charitable works that the disciples of Christ do in his name… As we can read in Matthew 25, we shall all be judged on this.”

Family Development Specialist Stephanie Vinson is part of the team at Good Shepherd’s new office in Farmington.

Good Shepherd Children & Family Services recently expanded its mission of “connecting families with children and keeping families connected” with the opening of a new office in Farmington. This expansion makes it possible to increase the agency’s Foster Care program from 105 to 130 cases and to develop foster and kinship homes in St. Francois County.

The expansion is in response to part of Good Shepherd’s strategic plan, to go where their services are most needed. Plans are in the works to next expand the agency’s Adoption and Pregnancy & Parenting Support programs to this office.

Did you know that only 30% of low-income Missouri families in need of legal aid can access the help they need? By serving more than 1,000 clients each year, St. Francis Community Services legal aid programs work to address this gap, so more people have a fair chance to represent their cases in civil court.

This past year, St. Francis’ legal advocacy has focused on ensuring clients are able to remain safe at home during the pandemic, helping families avoid eviction by resolving landlord-tenant issues; locating financial resources to assist families with rent and utility assistance; and representing clients facing harassment and illegal lockouts.

When weather permitted, SFCS legal staff created safe outdoor opportunities to meet in person with clients.
