Accelerate Renewable Energy Planning Using an Electrical Network Digital Twin 45 min

Speaker: Alfredo Contreras, Senior OpenUtilities Product Manager, Bentley Systems

Power systems engineers are becoming overwhelmed with the growing backlog of DER interconnection requests, increased regulations, and the need for more near real-time data modeling requirements due to the rapid penetration of renewables. During this session, Bentley experts will discuss current hosting capacity approaches and their limitations, and how the Electrical Digital Twin can improve and streamline interconnection processes and studies (assessment, design, approval) leveraging data from existing enterprise GIS, work management, asset management, and other enterprise systems, as well as IoT data. A continuous network modeling approach ensures that utilit ies can integrate DER into the grid without disrupting current operations and mitigate potential impacts before they occur and leverage the digital twin for integrated transmission and distribution planning with non-wires alternatives.

Modernize the Electric Grid with Proactive Design and Planning for Renewables 45 min

Speaker: Alfredo Contreras, Senior OpenUtilities Product Manager, Bentley Systems

Utility network planners, designers, and GIS experts depend on close collaboration to ensure network resilience and reliability. Engineers analyze many system scenarios to optimize network performance, mitigate operating issues, and provide design reviews for complex designs. Optimizing equipment size and estimating costs is critical for both designers and planners to design and plan complex networks based on thorough infrastructure analysis. Network transmission and distribution operators face the risk of network disruption due to the rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DER). DER turns the traditional, centralized approach to energy generation and distribution on its head by adding generation capability at the edge of the grid. Network infrastructure that was designed for centralized, one-way generation-to-consumption, needs to accommodate a growing number of prosumers, distributed energy owner-operators at the edge of the grid who both consume and produce energy. Cost remains a major threat to renewable growth. In this session, learn how to analyze both planned and existing infrastructure, optimize equipment sizing, and estimate current material and labor costs for projects with integrated DER to maintain networks.

Rail and Transit Industry Forum

Rail and Transit continues to be the fastest-growing transportation sector, producing new opportunities and challenges for existing and proposed rail networks. In this forum, we will explore how OpenRail is moving beyond BIM to realize the benefits of the digital twin for owner-operators and their supply chains.

Railways are constantly challenged to do more with less: more trains; more hours of services; less funding; less maintenance time; less disruption during construction. To deliver a safe, reliable, and efficient service against this backdrop it is necessary to change the way we think - tackling inefficiency at its root to ensure that we are doing the best we can with the available resources.

The Rail and Transit Forum will discuss:

- How digital twin concepts can be applied across the lifecycle of rail assets

- Best practices, case studies, and panel discussions with industry experts

- Ways to embrace the changes in digital technologies to maximize productivity

Rail and Transit Keynote | Digital Transformation - A People Topic

Jens-Peter Brauner | CEO | Siemens Mobility Ltd. | Hong Kong

In the future of rail, digital twins will interact with real people. The expected benefits are big and so are the concerns among domain experts. How can we introduce new technologies while having the people in mind? By sharing some experiences with consultative selling and design thinking, Peter is calling for a people-centric approach towards digital transformation.

Under the circumstances of a more dynamic and complex construction environment, effective construction planning is proving to be a key factor in achieving a sustainable competitive advantage in the market. Shell has been using 4D visualization planning for construction across many of its projects in the past few years and has seen considerable success and business advantages. 4D planning has had a positive impact for the upstream offshore construction industry; in fact it is seen as a game changer in improving the execution efficiency. It has enabled Shell to complete projects ahead of time with reduced safety risk and project cost. Most recently, Shell is using reality modeling during construction to track construction progress in real time and combine this with planning to achieve even greater efficiencies on site. They are also creating and maintaining a digital twin of the asset as it evolves during construction that will prove invaluable to operation and maintenance. Martin Swaine will discuss Shell’s progress to date using this technology and where he sees the industry heading.

Energy and Water Utilities Industry Forum

In a digital environment, every utility has a wealth of information about its network. Data might come from smart meters and sensors, 2D and 3D maps, design models, asset models, analysis models, and even paper. However, this information is often disconnected, standing on its own to support specific, siloed needs and workflows. The situation is further compounded when different assets at various stage of their lifecycle must interact in a cohesive manner while maintaining optimal operational performance for the utility.

The Energy and Water Utilities Forum explains how utilities are embracing new digital twin technologies to prepare for changing consumer behaviors and to address challenges around sustainability, resilience, and decentralization. Learn how a performance digital twin of the infrastructure and associated digital workflows, enabled through an open, connected data environment, provide a holistic approach to managing information, enabling faster and more informed decision making for better outcomes.

Energy and Water Utilities Keynote | An Integrated Generation, Transmission and Distribution Grid

Jim Taylor | VP Business Solutions & Strategy | Siemens Smart Infrastructure | Digital Grid

Rail and Transit Session 5 | Transforming Organisations Through Best Practices in Asset Management: The Key Issues and Challenges in Achieving Value Professor Sam Luke | Executive Director and Head of Asset Management Advisory | Jacobs

In an increasingly complex world it can be difficult to focus on what truly matters to our organisations, to join up our day to day activities with the value we want to create now and in the future. It is now all too easy to end up with terabytes of data that we can't remember why we're collecting, that nobody has time to look at and that doesn't interface with the systems people actually use on a daily basis. When things go wrong, we quite literally 'should have known better' and the data (if we can find it) will be there to prove it.

Asset Management creates this focus, the direct 'line of sight' from our strategic objectives through to our work delivery. It provides the context to question activities and processes that have organically grown over time; turning around the problem to ask - what are the most efficient ways to deliver maximum value to our customers, what is critical and how can we do these activities better?

Through this presentation. Professor Sam Luke will present the Asset Management framing, the risks in getting it wrong, and the benefits of getting it right, with examples from some pathfinder programmes in how to embrace technological disruption and future uncertainty and make data work for you.
