Social Media For Small Business By Lilian de la Torre-Jimenez Over 60 people attended the NHBWA November luncheon where guest speaker Manal Richa, a consultant with the Orange County Small Business Development Center (OCSBDC), provided valuable information on having a presence online via social media. “If you do not have a profile on Facebook, please get one. Make sure you create a fan page for your business as well and stay connected with your readers,” Richa said. She answered questions from an engaged audience and provided suggestions as to what are the best social media platforms available to promote small businesses, like Twitter and others. “It’s hard to say exactly how much time you should devote to posting on social media, each business is different and has different needs, but make sure that what you write has value for your business, or for your followers”, added Richa. The expert pointed out the importance of following the competition on social media and be up to date on what they are doing. Tracking is also important, and Richa suggested using Google analytics to maintain real time statistics on who visits your social media and how much time visitors spend on it. “One of the goals of NHBWA is to provide our members with networking opportunities, educational seminars and our luncheon series where we have experts in various fields sharing their wealth of information,” said Yobany Banks-McKay, NHBWA president. “Richa has provided us with many options to promote our businesses on social media platforms,” she added. Small business owners, college representatives and members of the Board of Directors of NHBWA as well as Adalberto Quijada, SBA district director attended the educational luncheon that took place on November 4th at the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) Board Room. Always Making Time To Giving Back By Francisco De Anda

2010 Scholarship recipient, Jennifer Harrizon is currently attending California State University, Fullerton where she is majoring in Child and Adolescent Studies with a minorin Communicative Disorders and will ultimately pursue her Masters Degree in Education. Her career goal is to become an elementary school teacher and eventually work as a speech-language pathologist. Although she is doing extremely well in her studies, Jenniferadmits that it is very challenging at times to balance being a single mother attempting to make a better life for herself and her son, going to school full-time and juggling other obligations and responsibilities simultaneously. Despite the fact that she is very busy, she still finds the time to give back to her community. She is currently an active memberof the Parenting Association Committee at Santa Ana College. This particular group is made up of parents who are working together to promote education by visiting local high schools and homes throughout the community to provide a better understanding of how to get into college. In addition, Jennifer also works closely with KinderCaminata by instilling the importance of a college education into the minds of young children. Jennifer is also involved on her college campus with a group known as the Child and Adolescent Studies Student Association (CASSA) where she participates in various community service events that involve working with children and fundraising walk-a-thons for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Jennifer expresses her gratitude and appreciation for having received a scholarship from the NHBWA.
