BENEFITS OF BUSINESS CONSULTING NHBWA Member Shares Her Experience By Lilian de la Torre-Jimenez Elisabeth Pechs, a business consultant with the Orange County Small Business Development Center (Orange County SBDC), is guiding my business start-up in the right direction. I first met with her back in April of this year as I was trying to launch my second start-up, Mujer Empresaria, a digital magazine for the Spanish-language entrepreneur. Since meeting with Pechs, I have taken a different approach in preparing for the launch in 2011 of this innovative digital magazine and mujerempresaria.tv, a business web TV. We have changed many things as a result of the consulting: the look of the media kit, our approach to potential sponsors, and all our collaterals have the touch and the advice of the Orange County SBDC. I believe any business person can benefit from consulting with experts. Pechs has provided her knowledge in marketing and sales at No Charge as part of the many services that Orange County SBDC offers to the business community. The individual consulting is a perfect opportunity to get that one-on-one advice and be able to brainstorm ideas that are a perfect fit for your business and discard many others that perhaps are not the right course of action. I’m very thankful to the entire staff of Orange County SBDC as they have always been very courteous and very helpful in helping me reach my business goals. NHBWA in partnership with the Orange County SBDC has allowed me to have this wonderful resource at my disposal. BENEFITS OF BUSINESS CONSULTINGNHBWA Member Shares Her ExperienceBy Lilian de la Torre-Jimenez

Elisabeth Pechs, a business consultant with the Orange County Small Business Development Center (Orange County SBDC), is guiding my business start-up in the right direction.

The individual consulting is a perfect opportunity to get that one-on-one advice and be able to brainstorm ideas that are a perfect fit for your business and discard many others that perhaps are not the right course of action.I’m very thankful to the entire staff of Orange County SBDC as they have always been very courteous and very helpful in helping me reach my business goals. NHBWA in partnership with the Orange County SBDC has allowed me to have this wonderful resource at my disposal.

The Fusion of Two Passions By Melisa López Esquivel

2010 Scholarship recipient, Nohemi Valenzuela currently attends Fullerton College. She is extremely enthusiastic about pursuing her cosmetology license. She has discovered that this is the perfect way to fuse her passion for teaching and cosmetology as a cosmetology instructor. She wants to foster student learning and encourage her students to pursue their passion. Upon completion of her Associate’s Degree she plans on pursuing an internship where she can apply her cosmetology skills. She is extremely grateful for the scholarship. It was an important element in allowing her to pursue her passion and reach her goals so that she may continue to create a better life for her and her 9-month-old daughter. She shared that education is vital and that it is possible in any circumstance. The NHBWA scholarship is available for students and continues to help those in need. Nohemi is extremely thankful!

NHBWA Leadership By Teresa Mercado-Cota

Yobany Banks-McKay was named President of the National Hispanic Business Women Association on May 20, 2010. She is also a Sales Manager with UPS, and has been with the transportation company since 1992. Prior to UPS, Yobanywas employed by a freight forwarding company in New York. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY, where she majored in International Studies with a minor in French. While in college, Yobany held three jobs in order to pay for her education. She was determined to be the first one in her family to graduate from college. Yobany has been a chairperson for her department at UPS for the United Way Campaign and has been involved with the fundraising efforts for the last four years. Yobany enjoys giving back to her community. She has also been very involved with her church for over ten years and supports different ministries including the Santa Ana Soup Kitchen where she goes once a month to volunteer her time to feed the poor.

Her husband, Jim, was recently invited to enter the Diaconate ministry which is a faith journey for the couple. Yobany joins her husband at the classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and hopes to get a Masters in Theology upon graduation of the program. Together they have two wonderful children, James, age 15 and Sarah, age 13.

NHBWA is pleased that Yobany is leading the organization and welcomes the opportunity to join forces with UPS and other collaborators as we strive to better serve members and the community.
