Death in DarfurBy: Carl Valentine6/1/12Period ELocationThere is a fight going on in the Darfur region of Sudan. (Sudan is in Africa)

A map of Sudan showing the Darfur region. The ConflictArab supremacists are killing African non-Muslims. These Arab supremacists are also in control of the government, so this is a very delicate situation. The Conflict cont. However, rebel groups have formed amongst the non-Muslim Africans, and have struck back against the government.

With all of the war and injustices being committed, these events are being considered genocide.Genocide= the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group

Adolf Hitler, who led a genocide in Europe against the Jews early in the 1900sCausesDarfur was once controlled by Britain. When Britain gave up Darfur, they left Arabs in charge of the country.Causes cont.Thirty-three years later, a group known as the National Islamic Front (NIF) came to power.

Janjaweed militiaCauses cont. The NIF used the Janjaweed, a Arab militia, to kill non-Muslim Africans in the southern part of the country. Soon, two rebel groups emerged. They are the Sudanese Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement. The two allied in 2003.

Omar al-Bashir, an NIF leaderThe JanjaweedThe Janjaweed is a militia group consisting of Muslims. They are supported by the NIF run government of Sudan. The word Janjaweed means hordes, ruffians, and devil on horseback. They use any means possible to commit genocide against non-Muslim, including torture and rape. The Rebels The two rebel groups are the Sudanese Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement. They allied in 200, and after their attacks on the government and the Janjaweed, a counter-attack was launched by the government on any non-Muslim communities who had links to the rebels.

Sudanese Liberation Army soldiersCurrent EventsOn July 9th, 2011, a new country was born. The Republic of South Sudan separated from Sudan to become an independent nation. The Republic of South SudanThe Republics separation shows the want of the people to have separated from the north and all of its problems. After its succession, the Republic was bombed by Sudan, pushing the neighboring nations closer to a dispute.

OilThere is currently a dispute over oil between the two nations, each claiming that they deserve the right to the oil. A war between Sudan and South Sudan would be great for the people of Darfur, because then Sudan would have even more problems to worry about besides its violent internal affairs. Genocide? Are the actions in Darfur and Sudan genocide? According to a report by CNN, this is a very real possibility. Most attacks weredirected against civiliansgovernment forces and militias conducted indiscriminate attackson a widespread and systematic basisthereforeamount to crimes against humanityThe element of genocidal intent appears to be missingas far ascentral government authorities are concerned.
