CPC THIS WEEK: THE E-NEWSLETTER OF CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH May 17, 2019 The Surgical Precision of the Word “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 Before fading off into “surgery la-la land” last Monday, I received a nerve block – in my neck. Because the doctor needed an ultra-sound image to conduct the procedure, I also had a front row seat of all that was happening. It was fascinating! I realize that this would not necessarily be prime-time viewing for everyone, but it was right up my alley! Just prior to coming to CPC 11 years ago I was able to watch the medial release surgery of my left knee. Now that was a show! Following doctor’s orders I positioned myself strategically against the railing of my bed; my neck now in the optimal position. After being warned about a “small pinch” I intently watched as my anesthesiologist guided the needle to the exact nerve needed for surgery. Slowly, the needle penetrated the nerve and I was able to faintly trace the drug’s journey into the nerve. I hope I haven’t lost anyone yet! I was returned to my flat-back position and remember waking up wondering when they were going to roll me into surgery. Sound familiar? It was quite the vivid overture to an otherwise forgettable surgery. As I watched the doctor’s handiwork on the screen I couldn’t help but think of the verse above from the book of Hebrews. God, through the use of His word, has the ability to surgically work in my heart. Notice again what the “living and active” word of God does in our lives – it discerns the thought and intentions of the heart. Far beyond the appreciated skill of a surgeon, God directs His word into our lives as a work of grace that nothing else can do! We need to understand that there is no substitute in all of creation that can “pierce the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, of thoughts and intentions” as the word of God. And because of this, I realize that there is no other standard, no other truth, by which my heart is both exposed to, and examined by, on a daily basis. Any other tool is but a blunt instrument – even in the capable hands of the most skilled practitioner. The screen revealing the needle’s penetration into my nerve pales in significance to the revealing work of God’s Spirit as He directs spiritual truths into the heart reservoir of my life. By God’s grace His living truth reveals the true condition of my heart – our hearts. Hearts to which He is committed Himself to changing into the very image of His Son’s heart! My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:20-23 Healing in Body and Soul, PB

The Surgical Precision of the Word

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow,

and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Before fading off into “surgery la-la land” last Monday, I received a nerve block – in my neck.

Music Speaks Truth in Madagascar (Video)

MTW missionaries Bryan and Rebe McReynolds befriended a band of five locals on the island of Nosy Be, Madagascar. This friendship led to the creation of songs with Scripture in the Sakalava language set to Sakalava music. The band members, not believers at the time, were impacted by the words of the Bible they were putting to music. In the process, they have all become believers. Now their musical efforts are put to work composing songs for worship and revealing the nature of God. Watch and listen to a taste of a powerful move of God’s Spirit in these Sakalva men. https://vimeo.com/331049862https://www.mtw.org/stories/details/music-speaks-truth-in-madagascar-videoMadagascar Situated off the northwest coast of Madagascar, the island of Nosy Be is known for its amazing beaches, wildlife, and groves of sweet-smelling ylang ylang trees. The Sakalava people, who consider Nosy Be their cultural capital, make their living by fishing, raising cattle, and growing rice. It can seem like a laid-back, idyllic paradise, but beneath the surface there is darkness. Tourism contributes to underage prostitution, exploitation of women, and sex trafficking. And the culture itself has many Sakalava living in bondage to taboos and rituals, given to them by their deceased ancestors through spiritual mediums. Our team has partnered with Africa Inland Mission to bring the good news of Jesus to the Sakalava people, a community that has had no way of hearing the gospel in their own language. Through Bible translation, storytelling, music creation, evangelistic outreach, and discipleship. God has called new Sakalava believers to Himself and established the beginnings of a Sakalava-speaking church. We are seeking church planters to join the team as this ministry continues to expand to new areas of Nosy Be and beyond. https://www.mtw.org/teams/africa/madagascar

Personal Note Bryan and Rebe McReynolds are from Austin, Texas, and have been with MTW since 2005, serving in South Africa and now Madagascar. They are part of an international team ministering to the Sakalava people of Nosy Be, Madagascar, through Scripture translation, discipleship training, and church planting.

Their church planting efforts have led to two small business projects: Mama Vao Vao, which employs Sakalava women who create handmade goods for sale in Madagascar and beyond; and the Sakalava Music Project, which works with local musicians to engage the culture and create Sakalava worship music and story songs from Scripture.

Please consider supporting Bryan and Rebe, and pray for their ministry among the Sakalava people. You can subscribe to their blog at www.mcreynoldstribe.com. https://www.mtw.org/missionaries/details/bryan-and-rebe-mcreynolds
