2 July/August 2015

Happy One-Year Anniversary, Wayland UMC! We entered our shared ministry last July. Thank you for welcoming us in many ways and supporting our transition into ministry here. We have lived through one cycle of the Church year and our outstanding Harvest Dinner. Worship music has been offered by Mitchell Lapham, Mickala Kohtz, Maggie Anderson, Roxie Muczynski, and our handbell choir, and we have welcomed Somi Yoon and Andria Savara as our regular and substitute pianists. In funeral and memorial services we have celebrated the lives of Effie Greenawalt, David Wood, Edith Clack, Tom Andrews, and Janet Haight.

And how about our motivated Mission Team! Their trip to Red Bird Mission and Henderson Settlement in early May will be followed by a second trip later this year because their dedication and creativity are overflowing. I have come to see the tradition of Scouting in our congregation. There have been Wayland city celebrations to introduce us to the spirit of our community. And I have experienced challenge and blessing in serving as Chairperson of our West Michigan Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry. In personal ways, this past year has included the death of my dad in January, Beverly's new job in May, and the news that we are expecting our first grandchild in August. So much fills a year! I find blessing in reflection and am grateful for the many dedicated leaders in our congregation. Together we continue seeking to reach our 2015 Congregational Goals:

1. Worship: Grow to average 100 people in worship. 2. Leadership: Increase our church leaders by 10%. 3. Discipleship: Have at least 40% of our worshipping congregation involved in small groups for

spiritual development.

Finding and maintaining focus on the mission of the Church is an ongoing challenge given the many troubles and distractions that fill our lives. I appreciate our times of worship to be recalled to the Center of our life, Jesus Christ, and sent forth to extend Christ's outreaching love in the world. As we enter our second year, I want to deepen my understanding of the character of our congregation and how we can best move forward in ministry. In their book, Grace for the Journey: Practices and Possibilities for In-Between Times, George and Beverly Thompson offer these questions for reflecting on congregational life:

1. Remembering your entire experience at this church, when were you most alive, most motivated, and most excited about your involvement? What made it exciting? Who else was involved? What happened? What was your part? Describe how you felt.

2. What do you value most about our church? What are its best features? 3. What three wishes do you have for the future of our church?

I find when we are in touch with the heart and soul of our common life as the Body of Christ, God uses us in amazing ways to share compassion, hope and love. May God bless and guide us in the coming year.

Peace, Pastor Jeff

Children’s Church Continues for July and August

Children’s Church follows the Children’s Message in worship with Pastor Jeff. Bible stories and songs are presented each week with Beverly Williams in

the Nursery. Children’s Sunday School will resume in September.

Adult Sunday School meets 11:15 - Noon Grab refreshments, and join other adults for conversation and reflection on the worship service. Pastor Jeff leads this informal gathering to learn from your observations and questions on improving the worship experience.

We are not meeting in July and August.

Monday, September 14th at 7:00 pm @ Donna Cole’s home

Do you knit, crochet, or have other interests? Call Sue Jensen (269-792-2830) or Margaret Smith (269-792-6710) with questions. Please come even if you don’t have a hobby and just like to visit.

Search and Like “Wayland UMC” on Facebook. We use Facebook as a communication source for daily Scripture passages posted by Kimberly Wolff, our Office Administrator; ministry team meeting reminders; and upcoming Church events. We want to increase the number of people reached in this way.

Congregational Goals for 2015

Our objective is to create a balance

among our inward focus and outward focus.

1. Worship participation: Grow average church attendance with

regular attendees to a goal of 100 in worship and sustain the

goal. As of Sunday, June 28th, average worship attendance is

69.

2. Spiritual Growth: Increase the number of leaders and

committee/team members by 10%. We elected 31 Church

Officers for 2015, so this goal is 3 new leaders. We

recognize Doug (Trustees) and Donna Cole (Care Team), and Sue Jensen (Care Team)

now serving as leaders!

3. Discipleship: Grow our education department and learning opportunities to have 40% of

attendees involved in something outside of Sunday worship. Our sources for this goal are

Children/Adult Sunday School, Women’s Fellowship, Boy Scouts and Venture Crew for

our youth, our Red Bird Mission/Henderson Settlement Mission Team, and the adult Bell

Choir. Total- 38 Goal-28

Soccer – Basketball – Cheerleading/Dance – Running/Agility – Softball/Baseball

Monday-Thursday, July 20-23,

We return to this popular camp after taking a break in 2014. We are cooperatively offering this event with New Life Christian Fellowship and Voice of Hope. The location has changed because the City Park will be under construction this summer. We are forming our WUMC MegaSports leadership team. Search Facebook for Wayland MEGA Sports Camp (Sports & Recreation) to see the latest updates and registration form. The home page of our web site (www.waylandumc.org) has current information.

So, what if you cannot be in worship? No problem, you can listen to the worship service through our web site! Go to www.waylandumc.org and find the Listen Live link. Choosing it, you will have streaming audio from our sound system. And if you want to listen to worship from a prior Sunday, choose the Archived Services link right next to Listen Live.

How To Get To Heaven

Reverend Billy Graham tells of a time early in his ministry when he arrived in a small town to preach a

sermon. Wanting to mail a letter he asked a young boy where the Post Office was. When the boy

had told him, Dr. Graham thanked him and said, “If you’ll come to the Baptist Church this evening,

you can hear me telling everyone how to get to Heaven.” “I don’t think I’ll be there”, the boy said.

“You don’t even know your way to the Post Office.”

Thanks Donna Flick for that fun story!

Thank you for your generous Noisy Offerings during May & June! We

supported Camp New Day and Babyfold at Old Mutare Hospital in Zimbabwe.

The July Noisy Offering supports the PET project. This project exists

to reflect the love of Jesus Christ, by bringing mobility and dignity to those

individuals who lack the ability to move on their own.

The August Noisy Offering will be collected for the Grand Rapids

Vietnamese United Methodist Church, which is Lane 5 (Racial Ethnic Local

Churches) of our Six Lanes of The Advance mission giving. Through our Ministry Shares, our First

Mile Giving, we help "build the highway" that allows us to travel into God's world. "Six Lanes of The

Advance” deals with Second Mile Giving above and beyond our basic responsibilities for outreach.

We collected 70 lbs. of food for the Christian Neighbors Food Pantry during May and June!

The requested Food Pantry item for July and August is, juice.

Cheri Koenig is the daughter of Bob and Pat Jackson. To honor her mother who died of breast

cancer, she completed the Avon 39 Breast Cancer Research Walk, June 6-7, in Chicago!

Mission Team going to Henderson Settlement as Volunteers in Mission

The Mission Team is planning another quick trip to Henderson Settlement, an agency of the Red Bird

Missionary Conference in southeast Kentucky. Along with taking donated items, the team will spend

2 days as “Volunteers in Mission” doing whatever work projects they can do there.

They plan to drive to Kentucky on Thursday, October 15; serve as Volunteers in Mission on Friday

and Saturday, October 16 and 17; and drive back to Michigan on Sunday, October 18.

At Henderson Settlement, they will stay in Evans House, which is a workcamp house with 6

bedrooms that can hold up to 14 people--5 double rooms, and 1 room with 4 single beds—so there is

plenty of room for anyone who wants to go, and all meals will be provided. Evans House is located in

Happy Hollow (a.k.a. “Happy Holler”), and mid-October will be a beautiful time of year to be in the

Appalachia Mountains!

Prayerfully consider if this is a project you would like to be involved with and if you have any

questions, or for more information, please contact Bea Stewart. Bea’s home number is 269.792.9038

and her email address is [email protected]

This picture and question/answer are part of a longer article on The United Methodist Church web

site, umc.org. How wonderful that Landon Kohtz and Don Dandrow were chosen for this article!

Landon Kohtz, age 15, asks: “How do you balance risk and reward in life?”

Eagle Scout, Boy Scout Troop 97, Wayland United Methodist Church, Wayland, Michigan

“I never step on anyone along the way. I don’t want to offend anyone. I do what I feel is right without

hurting anybody. I have compassion for those less fortunate along the way. I’m willing to assist any

way I can. I’ve had good health and a good life and I am grateful.” Don Dandrow, Age 89, Second

Class Boy Scout, Class of 1935, and a member of Wayland United Methodist Church, Wayland,

Heart Hands

Thank you all for your help with the Heart bulletin board by letting me take pictures of your hands

making a heart shape! If I missed anyone, please let me know and I would be happy to take a picture

of your hands and add it to our collection of heart-hands.

The pictures showed hands of all ages—some so young that Mothers had to hold babies hands

together to form the heart—other older hands with wrinkles, arthritic joints, and age spots—some with

beautifully manicured nails—others showing stains and wear from daily work. These were the hands

of Wayland United Methodist Church.

The pictures showed hands that have:

Prayed for one another and for our church

Opened Bibles to read and study scripture

Given financial support to the church, to missions, and to other special projects

Made repairs to the building

Taught Sunday School classes

Cooked, served, and washed dishes for Harvest Dinners, potluck dinners, and funeral

luncheons

Gave a comforting hug to someone who needed it

Served on committees and in other leadership roles

Shoveled snow and ice off of the sidewalk and steps during winter months

Served as greeters, ushers, and communion servers

Hands that have done all of this . . . and more. Without these hands—and the many hands that came

before us—our church would not be what it is today. Because of this, I couldn’t throw the pictures

away. Instead they were placed on a bulletin board in the hallway leading to the nursery. I hope you

will take a moment to look at all of the hands again and to thank God for everything these hands have

done for WUMC.

This certificate was received at the 2015 West Michigan Annual Conference.

Ministry Shares are the financial dimension of our involvement in the extension of Christ’s

ministry of outreaching love through the West Michigan Annual Conference. Each year we are asked

to pay 100% of our Ministry Shares. For 2015, our Ministry Shares are $17,048.

While right now we are not in a position to pay 100%, we are planning to grow back to that

commitment. At our Administrative Council/Finance Team meeting on 4/16/15, we decided to commit

5% of the monthly General Fund offering total for our monthly Ministry Shares contribution. Each

week, offerings for the General Fund and other gifts are reported in the bulletin.

This is the calculation for June 2015:

6/7 $2,020.00

6/14 $1,170.00

6/21 $1,758.00

6/28 $1,889.16

Total General Fund giving $6,837.16

5% Ministry Share payment $341.89

Donna Flick‘s Kitchen

It’s strawberry time again and this is the best recipe!

Big Boy Strawberry Pie

1 cup sugar 1 quart fresh stawberries

¼ cup cornstarch 9“ pie shell

1 ½ cups water Whipped cream

1 small package strawberry jello

1 tsp lemon juice

Mix together sugar, corn starch and jello. Add water and lemon juice. Bring to boil and cook over

medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Cool.

Fold gently into 1 quart of fresh starwberries, whole or sliced. Pour into 9“ baked pie shell. Place in

refridgerator until set. Top with whipped cream.

Sweet Baby Ray’s Crockpot Chicken

4/6 chicken parts

1 bottle of Sweet Baby Rays BBQ Sauce

¼ cup vinegar

¼ cup brown sugar

1 tsp garlic powder

Mix everything but chicken. Place chicken in crock pot, frozen is OK. Pour sauce mixture over

chicken. Cook on low 4-6 hours.

I put this in the crockpot before I got to work, and dinner is ready when I get home, and the house

smells so good! Enjoy!
