~ Girlfriends in God ~
G.I.G. Women's Bible Study Ministry will not meet in August. Join us for our next Women's Bible Study, "It's Not Supposed to Be This Way" by Lysa TerKeurst. We will begin this study on Tuesday, Sept. 10
th at our new time - 6:00 P.M.
“It's Not Supposed to Be This Way” offers a safe guide, fresh biblical insight, and life-giving perspectives for living in between Eden and eter-nity. With grit, vulnerability, and honest humor, Lysa helps readers:
Stop being pulled into the anxiety of disappointment by discovering how to better process unmet expectations and other painful situations.
Train themselves to recognize the three strategies of the enemy so they can stand strong and persevere through unsettling relationships and uncertain outcomes.
Discover the secret of being steadfast and not panicking when God actually does give them more than they can handle.
Shift their suspicion that God is cruel or reckless to the biblical assur-ance that God is protecting and preparing them.
Know how to encourage a friend and help them navigate hard realities with real help from God's truth.
G.I.G. is open to all local women age 18 and above. Previous bible study experience is not necessary. Join us when you are able, and par-ticipate at your own comfort level. For questions, or to reserve your study guide, please reach out to Tanya Burnett 563-599-4209 or [email protected].

Stewardship Update
This is taken from Luke 10:38-42:
Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her home. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me. But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good por-tion, which shall not be taken away from her.
THE GOOD PORTION...
So much to do! Important things. I am so busy.
All the things we have to do, even the seeming-
ly good and important things, can distract us
from our Lord's Word and make us anxious.
The one thing needful is to spend time with Je-
sus and hear His word, receive His teaching,
receive His forgiveness that only He can give.
Go to church on a regular basis. You have nothing
more important to do. Everything else can wait.
You have an appointment with Jesus Christ and
His Word and Sacrament. Serving your fellow
man, serving Jesus is good. You should do that.
But as we say at First Lutheran, "First Things First".
You are not saved by serving. You are saved by
Jesus. That is the good portion, and it will not be
taken away from you.
August “Mission of the Month” will go to:
NALC Lutheran Seminary. “Let's school
them in our desire to fill the cans".

VBS 2019 Recap
During Vacation Bible School, the First Lutheran Congregation wrapped their arms around the stu-dents, leaders, and helpers. With the congregation members’ donations & Thrivent Action Team $250 we provided 310 meals to students and adults. Thank you to the thirteen amazing kitchen helpers, Leon Glew for providing all the ground beef, the congregation for food donations, and Thrivent Fi-nancial Services. Not only did Thrivent Action Team provide $250 towards food, they also provided $250 towards the purchase of Bible School t-shirts.

“Feast at First” 35th Anniversary Delaware County Fair ~ July 8th-14th, 2019 ~ Final Report
We had another successful “Feast at First”. At the time of this writing, I do not have the final numbers of our profits for this year. I do know that it will be close to last year’s totals. The mon-ey that we make will go to local, state, national, and world needs.
We started this year in a panic when we discovered our large ancient chest freezer died. Lynne sent an email to all members to see if anyone could help. Lori Roberts came to the rescue...she had one in her basement. A new one would have cost us at least $750. Thank you, Lori!!!!
There are so many people to thank. First of all, there were 103 different people who volunteered, which included 13 youth. Of those, there were 39 who worked multiple shifts, and 9 people worked 6 or more shifts. We had 15 different people who helped at church in the kitchen. Eight of those worked more than one day. Thanks to Jean Conrad for being in charge each morning. The pie bakers were fantastic. Twenty-three people baked 58 pies. Also, thanks to those who made cash contributions which included Keith & Norma Borcherding (whose donation paid for all the ground beef), Betty Sutton, Bob Johnson, Doris Helmrichs, Craig & Brenda Saunders, Joan Schmidt, plus all those who donated through the offering plate.
I would like to also give special thanks to the “Feast at First” planning committee, which con-sisted of Carolyn & Pat Maloney, Sandy & Harlin Gilje, Deb & Larry Richmond, Dennis & Mar-sha Wiedenman, and my wife, Vicki. This group of people worked many hours before, during, and after the fair. Again, thanks for a job well done by all of you.

LSI August 2019 - Back to School Month
School is right around the corner! This time of year is exciting and stressful for many of us, but
imagine what it would be like to be a child or teen with an emotional or behavioral disorder. You
might be afraid of not being able to concentrate or fit in at your school. You might worry about
adjusting to a new classroom routine or making new friends. You might feel alone, like no one can relate to
you. Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) provides mental health services to children and families across the state.
It’s our job to relate to children who might feel alone or misunderstood. Our therapists work one-on-one with
children while our Behavioral Health Intervention Services team collaborates with families in their own homes
to help them develop skills like anger management and healthy decision-making. LSI also provides 24-hour
mental health care at the Bremwood and Beloit Residential Treatment Centers in Waverly and Ames to em-
power Iowa’s most vulnerable children and teens.
We thank you for your support of LSI’s mission as we respond together to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service! We know there are more Iowa children in need of this critical care. If you would like to learn more about how you can give a gift to support these crucial services, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at 563-676-2065 or [email protected]. Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, rac-es, and sexual orientations. Learn more at LSIowa.org and Facebook.com/LSI.Iowa. Back to His Usual Self... Sixteen-year-old Loki was struggling in school. He’d once been ambitious and conscientious about school-
work, but now, his grades were slipping. He was becoming detached and disconnected from his family and
his friends. He bottled up his emotions and refused to open up. His dad, Troy, felt like his son was slipping
away. Troy thought he’d exhausted all his options until he learned about LSI’s Mental Health Services.
Loki began meeting with his LSI therapist, Renae, regularly. For the first time, Loki had a neutral, unbiased
person to share his feelings and frustrations with. But Renae did more than just listen. She helped Loki prac-
tice coping skills and learn ways to feel more comfortable opening up and trusting other people with his feel-
ings. Slowly but surely, Troy started noticing Loki being more talkative after his sessions with Renae. Loki told
more stories about his friends at school, and Troy saw his son spending more time with his classmates at the
end of the day instead of being eager to get home. With Renae in his corner and practical skills to fall back
on, Loki feels more confident. He is thriving at school again. His grades are back up. He is more outgoing,
and he has a stronger relationship at home with Troy.
“I’m a lot happier and Loki is a lot happier. Everything is going in a positive direction,” Troy says. “Renae and LSI
have been excellent working with my son, and his therapy has gone better than I imagined.”
