Our college captains; Claudia McKimmie and Maisie Pilli presented the wreath, whilst our readers; Charlotte Findlay, Paige Heinjus, and Gemma McNamara read their chosen poems beautifully. The staff and students also held a ceremony of remembrance at the college on Friday. These events really show the respect and reverence that our students and staff consistently evidence. Thank you to everyone who made these days such a great tribute to all who served. Congratulations to the Year 10 Boys Volleyball team who have made it through to the State finals. Join me in congratulating Ashton Kurnof, Clancy Gledhill, Harley Middleton, Nathan Lattanzio, Mitchell McLean, Zac Nugent, and Kyle Jarvis. Now that we have settled well into the year, it is important for us to all understand the standards and policies that are in place to ensure our children are safe. As a school and a community that prioritises Child Safety, we need to ensure we comply with the Ministerial Order 870 by ensuring the Child Safe Standards are well in place. We have a responsibility to our children to ensure we ALL follow these standards. As a refresher for some and awareness for others, throughout the newsletters I will be addressing these standards, as well as concepts around our duty of care in keeping our children safe and protected from abuse within and outside the school hours. This is a responsibility of not only the school, but all of us adults within the community. This week I would like to reiterate the standards for our new and existing parents and any other community readers of KIT. There are 7 Child Safe Standards that schools and organisations must have in place: 1. Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety 2. A child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety 3. A child safety code of conduct 4. Screening, supervision, training and other human resource practices that reduce the risk of child abuse 5. Procedures for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse 6. Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse 7. Strategies to promote child participation and empowerment The vital necessity of ensuring all staff, and volunteers, have Working With Children Checks, Mandatory Reporting eLearning updates, professional development around recognising signs of abuse and the processes around reporting, as well as keeping our children safe, in and out of school, is part of our annual learning program. Our newsletters focus on areas that effect our children s health and wellbeing. These can include, but are not limited to, cyber safety awareness, resilience building, emotional regulation and development of our children through various ages. We like to share advice on healthy eating as well as the impact of sugar on behaviour and mental capacity, mental health, positive parenting strategies, such as the importance of families instilling a life balance that allows children, and parents, the down time they need to process this over-stimulated world. Whilst we revisit some of these concepts as new research is accessible, we are also keen to address any requests you may have. We also, at times, address those really hard concepts to create greater awareness around family violence, trauma, and what we need to do as a community to ensure the protection of our children and supporting families, is our priority. Here at the college we are consistently providing awareness programs for our youth. These are in the form of the Respectful Relationships program, awareness around cyber safety, guest speakers from renowned organisations and youth police officers, just to name a few. At the end of this KIT please find attached the PROTECT; Protecting Children from Abuse: for Parents and Carers. In a couple of weeks, I will include information around the 2014 Failure to Discloselegislation. This can also be found online if you wish to look at this sooner. Thank you all for reading about this heavy topic, however if these issues are brought into the light, we as a community can work together in creating awareness and building our knowledge and ability to support. Wishing you all a great week ahead, Fran Heath College Principal Child Safety Standards

Dear Parents & Carers,

Thank you to all the students, staff and parents that represented the college at the community ANZAC celebrations last Thursday. Our

students and teachers, including the CFA and College Band crew presented well at the march, whilst our hospitality students served

coffees for the early Dawn Service. Our college captains; Claudia McKimmie and Maisie Pilli presented the wreath, whilst our readers;

Charlotte Findlay, Paige Heinjus, and Gemma McNamara read their chosen poems beautifully.

The staff and students also held a ceremony of remembrance at the college on Friday. These events really show the respect and

reverence that our students and staff consistently evidence. Thank you to everyone who made these

days such a great tribute to all who served.

Congratulations to the Year 10 Boys Volleyball team who have made it through to the State

finals. Join me in congratulating Ashton Kurnof, Clancy Gledhill, Harley Middleton, Nathan

Lattanzio, Mitchell McLean, Zac Nugent, and Kyle Jarvis.

Now that we have settled well into the year, it is important for us to all understand the standards and policies that are in place to ensure

our children are safe. As a school and a community that prioritises Child Safety, we need to ensure we comply with the Ministerial

Order 870 by ensuring the Child Safe Standards are well in place. We have a responsibility to our children to ensure we ALL follow

these standards. As a refresher for some and awareness for others, throughout the newsletters I will be addressing these standards, as

well as concepts around our duty of care in keeping our children safe and protected from abuse within and outside the school hours.

This is a responsibility of not only the school, but all of us adults within the community. This week I would like to reiterate the

standards for our new and existing parents and any other community readers of KIT. There are 7 Child Safe Standards that schools and

organisations must have in place:

1. Strategies to embed an organisational culture of child safety

2. A child safe policy or statement of commitment to child safety

3. A child safety code of conduct

4. Screening, supervision, training and other human resource practices that reduce the risk of child abuse

5. Procedures for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse

6. Strategies to identify and reduce or remove risks of child abuse

7. Strategies to promote child participation and empowerment

The vital necessity of ensuring all staff, and volunteers, have Working With Children Checks, Mandatory Reporting eLearning updates,

professional development around recognising signs of abuse and the processes around reporting, as well as keeping our children safe, in

and out of school, is part of our annual learning program. Our newsletters focus on areas that effect our children’s health and wellbeing.

These can include, but are not limited to, cyber safety awareness, resilience building, emotional regulation and development of our

children through various ages. We like to share advice on healthy eating as well as the impact of sugar on behaviour and mental

capacity, mental health, positive parenting strategies, such as the importance of families instilling a life balance that allows children,

and parents, the down time they need to process this over-stimulated world. Whilst we revisit some of these concepts as new research is

accessible, we are also keen to address any requests you may have. We also, at times, address those really hard concepts to create

greater awareness around family violence, trauma, and what we need to do as a community to ensure the protection of our children and

supporting families, is our priority.

Here at the college we are consistently providing awareness programs for our youth. These are in the form of the Respectful

Relationships program, awareness around cyber safety, guest speakers from renowned organisations and youth police officers, just to

name a few.

At the end of this KIT please find attached the PROTECT; Protecting Children from Abuse: for Parents and Carers. In a couple of

weeks, I will include information around the 2014 ‘Failure to Disclose’ legislation. This can also be found online if you wish to look at

this sooner. Thank you all for reading about this heavy topic, however if these issues are brought into the light, we as a community can

work together in creating awareness and building our knowledge and ability to support.

Wishing you all a great week ahead,

Written by the Year 5 and 6 students and staff in 2018, this book looks at the stories behind over 50 men from the Upper Murray who enlisted in the Light Horse during World War 1. The book cost $20 and copies may be obtained from the General Office at the Senior Campus. Money raised will be used to fund the publication of another book being written by students and staff with the focus being on the men and women from the Upper Murray who did not return from overseas service.

Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge

This term, Corryong College’s Junior Campus is participating the

2019 Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge. Many students have

made a great start and are recording the books they have read. This

includes books read at home and at school. For students from

Foundation to Grade 2, the Challenge is to read or experience 30

books. For students in Grades 3 and 4, the Challenge is to read 15

books. The Challenge will finish during Term 3 on Friday the

30th August. There are still 17 weeks left to complete the Challenge.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Sarah

Harris. I wish you all the best on your reading journeys.

Junior Art News

This term in Art, all students will begin using paint to further develop

their exploration of art techniques and concepts. To protect their

clothing I would like all students to have an art smock they bring to

class. You do not need to buy anything, using old clothing, such as a

large shirt is sufficient. If you have any questions or concerns in

regards to obtaining one, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please

be aware art classes are on the following days.

Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2: Thursday

Grade 3: Friday

Grade 4: Wednesday

Thank you for your support.
