Last week in this space, the history and needs for the call to a New Evangelization throughout the universal Church was discussed. Over the next few weeks, we will look at how our particular Church of Boston has responded to this call, as expressed by our bishop, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, in his Pastoral Letter on Evangelization: A New Pentecost: Inviting All to Follow Jesus (June 12, 2011). In this letter, Cardinal Sean reminds us that-between the Lord’s death and the coming of the Holy Spirit-the

first disciples were hiding in the Upper Room. “They lacked a sense of outward mission and purpose. Christ then sent the Holy Spirit to them and …the disciples were transformed…Their focus turned outward toward all those they were called to evangelize…to begin living the Church’s Great Commission from Christ: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you [Mt. 28:19-20].” Today’s New Evangelization is “new” only in the sense that we are called to evangelize, like the first disciples did: in our own time, place and culture. So, the message of salvation, peace, and joy in and through our Lord Jesus Christ remains the same as it was over two thousand years ago. This message is eternal, but the methods used to spread this message in today’s world is “new.” In his letter, the Cardinal emphasizes that “Like the original disciples, we too rely on the power and grace of the Holy Spirit for our efforts,” but “we can only share what we have received. In preparing to evangelize, we are called to conversion which means continually to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ, individually and as a Church. The Good News nurtures us, makes us grow and renews us in holiness as God’s people.” To truly evangelize, we must know the message we deliver. We must know Jesus. “And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments (1 Jn 2:3).” To be empowered by the Holy Spirit, to evangelize in a powerful, fruitful way, it is necessary that we ourselves remain in His love through prayer, sacrament and service. In this way, we ourselves come to know Jesus so that we can share, witness and invite others to know Him, too. “The early Christians were conscious of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit as the source of holiness, gifts of grace and apostolic zeal.” Let us allow the Spirit to do in us, what He has done since the first disciples prayed with Mary in the Upper Room. Let us, like them pray: “Come, Holy Spirit, come renew the face to the earth.”

Solemn Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus 19 days after Pentecost—June 3rd 2016 Act of Love to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Reveal Thy Sacred Heart to me, O Jesus, and

show me Its attractions. Unite me to It for ever. Grant that all my aspirations and all the beats of

my heart, which cease not even while I sleep, may be a testimonial to Thee of my love for Thee

and may say to Thee: Yes, Lord, I am all Thine; the pledge of my allegiance to Thee rests ever in my

heart and will never cease to be there. Do Thou accept the slight amount of good

that I do and be graciously pleased to repair all my wrongdoing;

so that I may be able to bless Thee in time and in eternity. Amen

State of Collaborative and Finance Update June 2016

Dear Friends – Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is important that I write to give you an update of the ongoing conversations that have been taking place in our Finance Council advisory meetings. I don’t want this update and the report that follows to be divisive or discour-aging, but rather a way for us to open dialogue and prepare for and implement our vision for today and the next three years. In June, I will present you with a comprehensive analysis of our budget and offertory giving. I will also demon-strate and analyze increased costs and financial need budgeting, with the help of my finance and development teams. Generally speaking, we have had the same income for the past five to ten years, while the cost of living has increased over twenty-five percent (25%) . Historically, parishes have developed a budget and set goals solely based on free will giving. Moving forward, we must develop a new vision to support our mission, including an aggressive budget plan that is driven by mission and vision. I thank you for your past generosity, and ask you prayerfully to reflect on this announcement and the Annual Report in June.

Change is hard for people: a new office, new schedules, Mass times, etc. Training and experience teaches us to expect an initial 15-20% decline both in Mass attendance and offertory

freewill giving. Over time it was expected that by transparent reporting that these deficits would normalize. For the past two years the weekly Mass attendance and offertory collection, special collections, and campaigns have

declined between 10-20% collectively. This is not a time for us to make cuts, but improve; simply put, I cannot pay the bills if we lack sufficient funds.

Every parish and school, much like any business operation, relies on income as a key source to be operational. Even more so, a collaborative with two parishes and a school like ours, relies on sufficient finances to operate and keep our doors open. Over the past two years, we have invested in our ministries, programs, staffing and our properties and programs. I know that the day-to-day work and maintenance that takes place with two churches, one open school, two closed schools, one office building, and one residence, and the land they occupy is mostly done outside your view. Re-member most of our buildings are over seventy years of age and have had little, or deficient, maintenance.

Catholic Appeal is divided by Goal and Assessment . If we meet our Assessment we begin to receive a rebate. If we don’t meet the assessment we are basically taxed the difference. (Our Catholic Appeal is ($24,288) short of its goal at Sacred Heart and ($10,506) over the assessment at St Thomas). To help you understand the Appeal, you should know that we are annually assessed, i.e., taxed for the year, by the archdiocese based upon our annual parish/collaborative income to support Central Ministries, which is our responsibility. If we do not raise this assessed amount in pledges, we must still contribute from our own parish/collaborative resources.

Snow removal deficit from for the historic winter storms of 2014 added ($ 35,000) debt to our parish/collaborative. Grand Annual/Capitol was collectively in deficit by ($ 16,000). The Grand Annual/Capitol collection helps satisfy

budget deficits and allows us to maintain and improve the infrastructure. Shortfalls in other income, Fees and Fundraising were over ($43, 000) effecting the general income.

We have a budget deficit of over $150,000, which is a 20% gap in weekly income. In the business world, this would mean that I would have to make cuts; literally at least one employee and possibly surrender a priest position. and shut down operations two days a week, to stay within budget. Yes, we are a business, but First we are a Church. I cannot do away with ministries, priests and people and still say that we are growing and moving from maintenance to mission. My mandate is to feed the 25,000 souls who reside and worship here in Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More, while creating a new unified one family collaborative that is active in disciple-making. I am also charged with maintaining and improving the patrimony of these parishes so that we have use of them and assure that those who follow us may have a share in them. That means that everything is to be maintained, cared for, and efficiently improved. All of this work is our offering, for the Glory of God. Our collective mission is to live out the Gospel as Disciples in Mission, learning to love our God and our neighbor as ourselves. I ask for your help and prayerful reflection. In Christ Jesus, Fr. Sean
