“NEW EVANGELIZATION” is the focus of our Church at this point in her history. ‘New Evangelization’ is a renewed emphasis on evangelization, which is - and has always been - the heart of the Church’s identity and mission. As expressed in his encyclical Redemptoris Missio (7 December 1990), the ‘new evangelization’ is John Paul II’s response to new cultural realities. New evangelization conserves the essentials of the past, while at the same time, responding to new situations and challenges in the surrounding culture. Our

Catholic Church around the world has ancient Christian roots, but entire groups of the baptized have lost a sense of the faith, or even no longer consider themselves members of the Church, and live a life far removed from Christ and His Gospel. John Paul wrote that what is needed is a “new evangelization” or a “re-evangelization.” In his view, evangelization is always focused on a profound experience of conversion based on a personal encounter with Christ. Because of this personal focus, John Paul II stated that evangelization must bring about an internal conversion of heart and mind built on “a complete and sincere adherence to Christ and his Gospel.” The critical sign of this conversion of mind and heart is the desire to communicate the Gospel of Christ to others. Authentic Christian life is oriented to mission and evangelization. All Christians, wherever they live, are bound to show forth, by the example of their lives, that new man put on at baptism and that power of the Holy Spirit by which they have been strengthened at Confirmation so that other people, observing their good works, can come to also know, love and serve Jesus Christ and glorify the Father. Evangelization, then, is the primary activity of all Christians and can be carried out wherever Christians find themselves. Redemptoris Missio seeks, then, to promote “a new awareness that missionary activity is something for all Christians, for all dioceses and parishes, Church institutions and associations.” Evangelization is person-centered. The “new” evangelization is the witness given by every Christian in his/her daily life. John Paul II reiterated the importance of the laity as missionary agents. He recalled the prominence given to lay involvement as expressed in the writings of Pius XII, through to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, and subsequent papal teachings, including his own. The new evangelization is based on the conviction that the mission of evangelization is the responsibility of all members of the Church. It is not now a matter of sending out missionaries to other lands, but of awakening to the need for Christians in secularized cultures-our culture-to evangelize their fellow citizens. Despite the evangelization that occurred in the past, society no longer lives by the Gospel. The new evangelization calls each one of us to simply share the story of what Jesus has done for us in our personal lives. For example, how did YOU cope with a trial in your life? New evangelization simply means that when you meet a person, who is experiencing similar trials, you tell them how your relationship with Jesus helped you get through it. What does your personal faith mean to you? Share it with another person whenever you can. In this way, you become a “new” evangelizer!

[Excerpts from: Richard Rymarz, John Paul II and the "New Evangelization": Origins and Meaning - Vol 15, No 1, 2010 - Australian eJournal of Theology.]

Jubilee Prayer for the Blessed Trinity 2000 1. Blessed are you, Father, who, in your infinite

love, gave us your only begotten Son. By the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate in the spotless womb of the Virgin Mary and was born in Bethlehem two thou-sand years ago. He became our companion on life's path and gave new meaning to our history, the journey we make together in toil and suffering, in faithfulness and love, towards the new heaven and the new earth where You, once death has been vanquished, will be all in all.

Praise and glory to You, Most Holy Trinity, you alone are God most high!

2. By your grace, O Father, may the Jubilee Year be a time of deep conversion and of joyful return to you. May it be a time of reconciliation between people, and of peace restored among nations, a time when swords are beaten into ploughshares and the clash of arms gives way to songs of peace.

Father, grant that we may live this Jubilee Year docile to the voice of the Spirit, faithful to the way of Christ, diligent in listening to your Word and in approaching the wellsprings of grace. Praise and glory to You, Most Holy Trinity, you alone are God most high! 3. Father, by the power of the Spirit, strengthen the Church's commitment to the new evangelization and guide our steps along the pathways of the world, to proclaim Christ by our lives, and to direct our earthly pilgrimage towards the City of heavenly light. May Christ's followers show forth their love for the poor and the oppressed; may they be one with those in need and abound in works of mercy; may they be compassionate towards all, that they themselves may obtain indulgence and forgiveness from you. Praise and glory to You, Most Holy Trinity, you alone are God most high!

4. Father, grant that your Son's disciples, purified in memory and acknowledging their failings, may be one, that the world may believe. May dialogue between the followers of the great religions prosper, and may all people discover the joy of being your children. May the intercession of Mary, Mother of your faithful people, in union with the prayers of the Apostles, the Christian martyrs, and the righteous of all nations in every age, make the Holy Year a time of renewed hope and of joy in the Spirit for each of us and for the whole Church. Praise and glory to You, Most Holy Trinity, you alone are God most high! 5. To you, Almighty Father, Creator of the universe and of mankind, through Christ, the Living One, Lord of time and history, in the Spirit who makes all things holy, be praise and honour and glory now and for ever. Amen! This beautiful Litany prayer was written By Pope Saint John Paul II for the great Jubilee Year of 2000. The prayer of the Church Catechizes us still and reveals to us the eternal love and mercy of our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit: One God, three Divine Persons.

Collaborative Library Film Review:

“WWJD: What Would Jesus Do?”

“WWJD: What Would Jesus Do?” (2009) is a pleasant family film based on the Christian

bestseller “In His Steps” by Charles M.

Sheldon. The film stars John Schneider as a drifter who enters a small, dying town, whose

unemployment and crime rates have been rising over the past few years. He inspires

several key residents (a newspaper publisher, a budding musician, a real estate agent, and a minister who lost his faith) to work together

to promote change so that the town will flourish again. “When you find yourself

struggling with life’s difficult decisions, ask yourself one simple question: What would

Jesus do?” he addresses them, before collapsing inside their church. His illness ignites their spiritual renewal. Running

time:88 minutes Rated PG. Dove Faith-Friendly:

Recommended for all ages.
