HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 2

The Corona Holy Week

T his Holy Week our lives are severely disrupted. Directives from medical and government authorities command us to stay away from each other. This is a painful situation for grandchildren who cannot

visit grandparents. Friends are separated from one another. Whether it be shopping, walking or working, people are keeping distance. Students are doing their homework through “distance education” lessons. We hope and pray for a normal life routine. At the beginning of human history, there was an even deeper, radical disruption between God and the human family. The Original Sin of our first parents separated the whole human race from God. There was strife and sad distancing between people. God’s plan of salvation brings healing to these breakdowns of connection and togetherness. The liturgy of Holy Week is all about how God’s design unites us with Him and each other in a divine family. Baptized and reborn we are children of God! Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper celebrates the ultimate union of God with us in the Holy Eucharist. We are brothers and sisters in the Lord as one body in Christ in Holy Communion. On Easter Sunday we renew our true identity with the renewal of Baptism Promises. Unfortunately for the time of the current health emergency, the faithful cannot share in the liturgy “in person” to be drawn into the mystery of the “dying and rising of Christ.” We can do the next best thing. We can be close to Jesus and to one another in our prayers with conscious intentionality! We can be united to Christ in the liturgy this year by our virtual participation. We can make Holy Week personal by reflecting on the readings of Scripture each day. Please visit www.usccb.org and click on the calendar for the readings. Pray the liturgy with live streaming venues. Visit www.diopitt.org/spiritualresources or check out the live streaming of Holy Week services on the parish web site. During this Corona Holy Week, take out some time to check in with Jesus with your own words. This week can be special and holy even in the midst of disruption and painful separations. We yearn for the day that we can gather together again as God’s people to pray and share again the “work of salvation” in person! Fr. Steve

Ministry to the Sick

The role of priest-chaplain is challenging in this time of Corona Virus. The usual duties of a parish chaplain are to the nursing homes and hospitals to which he is assigned and the homebound of the parish. These duties include the celebration of Mass, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, devotions and unit rounds. With recent directives from the medical and government authorities, chaplains for the time being are not able to celebrate Mass at nursing homes or do unit rounds - visiting resi-dents in their rooms. This is an effort to “flatten the curve” of the number of virus infections. As of Saturday, March 28th, for the protection of everyone, Bishop Zubik sus-pended the celebration of all the Sacraments to avoid gatherings of people and contact with anyone who might have the virus. The exception is the Anoint-ing of the Sick. If a person is actively dying and asks for the “Last Rites,” the priest will be called and permitted to enter the facility. If the person has symptoms of the Corona Virus, the chaplain will use gloves, gown and mask. After the prayers and anointing with the Oil for the Sick - blessed by the bish-op on Holy Thursday at the Cathedral - the priest will give the Apostolic Blessing - imparting a plenary indulgence. After this individual pastoral visit, the priest then departs the facility. The parish chaplain exercises “social dis-tancing” in rectory living. With no possibility of the usual ministry in the nursing home, the parish priest has more time devoted to prayer for the sick and for the people of the parish. Our parish chaplain is Father Steve. He can be reached at 412-720-3554.

3 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

CARRYING OUR CROSSES WITH JESUS

Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23

This Lent, it is safe to say, we are all carrying crosses, the ones carved out for each of us by Corona’s closures and quarantine requirements. And so it is that this Holy Week, as we follow Jesus all the way to Calvary, we can, if we choose to, walk in complete solidarity with him...and with each other. On this Good Friday when Jesus is brutally stripped of his garments, we might call to mind that we’ve also been stripped -- stripped almost overnight of access to external “non-essentials” that we deem essential to our daily well-being. Thus it is no surprise that emotional and physical suffering prevail for many. Yet hidden within our communal pain is a blessing, a precious blessing. St. Teresa of Avila describes it well. In her writing about suffering, she empathizes with us: “It’s not that you are happy for your suffering. You are happy for the new level of intimacy with God that this suffering brings you.” Souls need meaning like bodies need food. Will you make this time of suffering meaningful by embracing a deeper level of intimacy with Christ? Will you devote a portion of Corona’s “gift” of abundant time to spend time alone with him daily, talking and listening? St Teresa also wrote that she viewed the essence of prayer as “simply talking to God.” If you choose to make your newly-stripped life meaningful by spending time alone with Christ, perhaps you’ll be celebrating another priceless blessing with St. Paul on Easter: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives within me!” Galatians 2:20 In Christ’s love, Eileen Colianni

I continue to hold all of you in prayer, along with Fr. Joe and Fr. Steve, until we get to be together again in person, knowing that we are still together in “Spirit.” As on the first Palm Sunday, Jesus comes – to set us free. He comes to us - in our uncertainties and fears - and tells us, “I am here.” And as the centurion at the Cross said in our Palm Sunday Passion reading, “Truly, He is the Son of God.” In this last week of Lent, it has been suggested that each one of us can offer the crosses we experience - in our discomfort, in the restrictions of our activities, and our anxiousness – to the Lord Jesus as part of any Lenten sacrifices we have been trying to do. As the first Reading today says, “Morning after morning, He opens my ears that I may hear: The Lord is My help.” May we hear these words He gives us: “My brothers and sisters, know that I am here - that I am with you - in your hearts, in your homes, with your families. Place your cares, your fears, your worries at the foot of My Cross. It is there where you will find the strength you need as you continue on. Trust in Me. All things ARE in My hands. You WILL see my love made manifest. You WILL see all things work together for good - as you trust in Me. Pray for My Holy Spirit to bring you the gift of Hope, to bring you Peace, each day of this Holy Week ahead. Trust in Me.” Fr. John

PRAYER FOR A PANDEMIC O God, May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.

May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home

Remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close

Remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips remember those that have no safe place to go.

May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market Remember those who have no margin at all.

May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose love.

During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, Let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen.

ON A BRIGHTER SIDE! LOOKING FORWARD TO SUMMER Don’t Throw That Away!

Probably every family or household has a member or two that never wants to part with things. In my family that person was my dad. His workbench and the base-ment were filled with items that my mother would always try to throw away; only to “get caught” by the words: “Don’t throw that away!” Mom would just shrug her shoulders and retreat, but we knew she would wait for another try when she could. It is a funny memory in our family to this day. Mom was a ‘throw outer.’. Dad was a saver. “You never know when we might need that contraption,”; he would say. As the “stay-at- home” order continues, I hear many people saying, “Well at least, I am cleaning out closets, re-organizing basements and garages and ‘getting rid’ of things we haven’t used for years.”. Well everyone, please “don’t throw ANYTHING away, yet”! As the old saying goes, ‘one person’s junk, is another one’s treasure.’. Save your throw- away items for the Saint Raphael’s Summer Family Bazaar’s Flea Market. As soon as the stay-at- home order is lifted, you will be able to take ‘everything’ to Gallagher Hall at Saint Rapha-el Parish. The Flea Market at the Bazaar is the best organized and most popular in all the surrounding neighborhoods. People come from everywhere to find just what they are looking for. Please consider do-nating all your still useable items that you are ready to discard. Items must be clean and ready for sale and no televisions or computers can be accepted. No clothing is sold at the Flea Market either. Books, music CDs, and movies are also welcome for our used book sale. Please note that no televisions or computers are accepted. Please support Saint Raphael’s Flea Market this year.

Prayer for Health Care Workers

God of everlasting goodness, you sent your Son among us to bring healing, peace, and reconciliation to our weary world.

Be with all health care workers and their assistants in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic.

As they continue Jesus' ministry of care, renew them in mind, body, and spirit. Keep them safe from infection and illness,

and may Christ's healing presence flow through them as they serve those entrusted to their care.

We ask this in his name, Christ the healer, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

5 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

Novena of Surrender to the Will of God

In 1965 a Father Dolindo Ruotolo wrote to Bishop Hnilica say-ing that new John will rise from Poland, who, with heroic steps, would break the power of Communism. Father Ruotolo, a mystic, also received a special novena of surrender from Jesus.

DAY 1 - Why do you confuse yourselves by worrying? Leave the care of your affairs to Me and everything will be peaceful. I say to you in truth that every act of true, blind, complete surren-der to Me produces the effect that you desire and resolves all difficult situations. Then pray 10 times: O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything!

DAY 2 - Surrender to me does not mean to fret, to be upset, or to lose hope, nor does it mean offering to me a worried prayer ask-ing me to follow you and change your worry into prayer. It is against this surrender, deeply against it, to worry, to be nervous and to desire to think about the consequences of anything. It is like the confusion that children feel when they ask their mother to see to their needs, and then try to take care of those needs for themselves so that their childlike efforts get in their mother’s way. Surrender means to placidly close the eyes of the soul, to turn away from thoughts of tribulation and to put yourself in my care, so that only I act. Saying ‘You take care of it.’ O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

DAY 3 - How many things I do when the soul, in so much spir-itual and material need turns to me, looks at me and says to me; “You take care of it,” then close its eyes and rests. In pain you pray for Me to act, but that I act in the way you want. You do not turn to Me, instead, you want me to adapt to your ideas. You are not sick people who ask the doctor to cure you, but rather sick people who tell the doctor how to. So do not act this way, but pray as I taught you in the Our Father: “Hallowed be thy Name”, that is, be glorified in my need. “Thy kingdom come”, that is, let all that is in us and in the world be in accord with your kingdom. “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven”, that is, in our need, decide as you see fit for our temporal and eternal life. If you say to me truly: “Thy will be done”. Which is the same as saying: “You take care of it”. I will intervene with all my om-nipotence, and I will resolve the most difficult situations. O Je-sus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

DAY 4 - You see evil growing instead of weakening? Do not worry, Close your eyes and say to me with faith: “Thy will be done, You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that I will intervene as does a doctor and I will accomplish miracles when they are needed. Do you see that the sick person is getting worse? Do not be upset, but close your eyes and say “You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that there is no medicine more powerful than my loving interven-

tion. By my love, I promise this to you. O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

DAY 5 - And when I must lead you on a path different from the one you see, I will prepare you; I will carry you in my arms; I will let you find yourself, like children who have fallen asleep in their mother’s arms, on the other bank of the river. What troubles you and hurts you immensely are your reason, your thoughts and worry, and your desire at all costs to deal with what afflicts you. O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

DAY 6 - You are sleepless; you want to judge everything, direct everything and see to everything and you surrender to human strength, or worse- to men themselves, trusting in their interven-tion,- this is what hinders my words and my views. Oh how much I wish from you this surrender, to help you and how I suf-fer when I see you so agitated! Satan tries to do exactly this: to agitate you and to remove you from my protection and to throw you into the jaws of human initiative. So, trust only in me, rest in me, surrender to me in everything. O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

DAY 7 - I perform miracles in proportion to your full surrender to me and to your not thinking of yourselves. I sow treasure troves of graces when you are in the deepest poverty. No person of reason, no thinker, has ever performed miracles, not even among the saints. He does divine works whosoever surrenders to God. So don’t think about it anymore, because you mind is acute and for you it is very hard to see evil and to trust in me and to not think of yourself. Do this for all your needs, do this all of you and you will see great continual silent miracles. I will take care of things, I promise this to you. O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

DAY 8 - Close your eyes and let yourself be carried away on the flowing current of my grace; close your eyes and do not think of the present, turning your thoughts away from the future just as you would from temptation. Repose in me, believing in my good-ness, and I promise you by my love that if you say “You take care of it.” I will take care of it all; I will console you, liberate you and guide you. O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

DAY 9 - Pray always in readiness to surrender, and you will re-ceive from it great peace and great rewards, even when I confer on you the grace of immolation, of repentance and of love. Then what does suffering matter? It seems impossible to you? Close your eyes and say with all your soul, “Jesus, you take care of it.” Do not be afraid, I will take care of things and you will bless my name by humbling yourself. A thousand prayers cannot equal one single act of surrender, remember this well. There is no no-vena more effective than this: O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything. (10 times)

Novena of Surrender to the Will of God

Here is a simple but extremely powerful Novena that will help you give to God all that you cannot handle or unable to fix. Certain things are out of our control and God the Father loves when we come to Him and hand over those painful experiences in life. He delights when we do that with complete trust and surrender in Him. He really means that!

God is your Loving Father. Pray this Novena each day. It takes five minutes at the most. Really mean what you pray. I guarantee what you are going through will pass. In the meantime, what frightens or worries you; you will manage and even find joy while you do. Father Joe

Confirmation and First Communion As you know, due to the current health emergency, Bishop David Zubik has cancelled all Confirmations and

First Communions until further notice. When government and medical authorities will an-nounce a normalization of life, dates will be set for First Communion and Confirmation. We will follow the directions of the Diocese in this regard.

There will be some immediate preparation and rehearsal before each of these celebrations. Many thanks to the teachers who continue to provide prepa-ration for these sacraments with distance education!

Father Steve, Kate Taylor and JR Daniels are going to coor-dinate the First Communion and Confirmation. Father Steve is working on some additional material to help families prepare at home.

If you have any questions or concerns about First Communion or Confirmation, please contact Father Steve at 412-720-3554 or [email protected].

All families are encouraged to pray together daily and to participate in the special days of Holy Week and Sunday Mass by the live-streaming available. Please visit www.diopitt.org/spiritual-resources and the Sacred Heart - St Raphael website www.bestpghparish.org for more information!
