SACRED HEART - SAINT RAPHAEL FAITH FORMATION
RCIA Rite of Sending & Rite of Election Next Sunday, March 17, Sacred Heart Parish will be sending one catechumen and five candidates to St. Paul’s Cathedral for the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion. Sacred Heart has six individuals who will recognized in The Rite of Sending during 11:30 a.m. Mass. As the focal point of the Church’s concern for the catechumens, admission to election belongs to the bishop. It is within the local parish community, however, that the preliminary judgment is made concerning the catechumens’ state of formation and progress. It offers our parish the opportunity to express its approval of the catechumen and be sent forth to the celebration of election assured of the parish’s care and support. In addition, those who are completing their initiation through the sacraments of confirmation and the Eucharist or are preparing for reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church are also included in this rite, since they too will be presented to the bishop during the Call to Continuing Conversion at the Rite of Election.
SOLEMNITY OF SAINT JOSEPH: 19 March The Angel Gabriel brought Joseph astonishing
news: his wife, Mary, was with child by the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph gave his entire self to
serve Jesus and Mary. His character was proven in repeated difficulties - the journey to Bethlehem, the sojourn into Egypt, the loss and then the finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple at Jerusalem. Joseph and Mary’s self-giving love for each other formed
the true and original “domestic church” that protected and nurtured Jesus. Together, they form the model for the Christian family. Having died in
the company of Mary and Jesus, Joseph is considered the patron saint of a happy death.

ADORATION AND EVENING PRAYER The Liturgy of the Hours is prayed by reli-gious, clergy and laity at various times throughout the day. Evening Prayer consists of a hymn, three psalms, a reading from Scripture, the Canticle of Mary, intercessions, the Lord’s Prayer and a final prayer. You are invited to Adoration and Evening Prayer at Sacred Heart the Sundays of Lent. Adoration begins at 4:00 pm. Evening Prayer concludes the Holy Hour. This is a special opportunity to spend time with the Lord and then share in the prayer of the Church!
A PRAYER FOR OUR CHURCH Loving God, in every age you have been our refuge.
Yet again and still, we stand before you begging for mercy on our holy Church.
For the victims of abuse and their families: Pour out your healing and your peace.
For the perpetrators: That God’s mercy may touch them.
For the Bishop’s of this country: May their thinking and their actions manifest the mind of
Christ and guide them by your Spirit. For the thousands of good and faithful priests, who have
followed your call to serve you and your people in holiness: Sustain them by your Grace.
For the faithful who are angry, confused, and searching for answers:
Embrace them with your love, restore their trust, console them with your clear Gospel message, and renew them with
your sacraments. We place our Church in your hands. For without you we are
nothing. May Jesus, our High Priest and true compass, contin-ue to lead her in every thought and action - to be an instrument of justice, a source of consolation, a sacrament of unity, and a
manifestation of your faithful covenant. Grant this through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God
forever and ever. Amen
“ Do not be afraid to be saints.
Follow Jesus Christ who is the source of
freedom and light.
Be open to the Lord so that He may
lighten all your ways.”

THIRD GRADE NEWS The third graders are eagerly waiting for spring to arrive. Our classroom has been busy during these cold and snowy days. Students are working hard to use text evidence with comprehension skills such as cause and effect and compare and contrast. They read about the early days of the railroad and more recently about the determination of the Wright Brothers. They continue to enjoy our after recess read aloud time together. This month we are reading the lively chapter book Fenway and Hattie. It is a delightful story told from a dog’s point of view. We have moved beyond multiplication and division and have begun the unit on fractions. Students are working with an online skill practice site to review comparing and finding equivalent fractions. Students prepared for the beginning of Lent by creating Lenten crosses with the reminder to pray, fast, and give during this time.

It Is Good That We Are Here – As we hear the account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in today’s Gospel, it is hard not to try to imagine what that scene was like. Picture yourself stand-ing with Peter, James and John as Jesus, joined by Moses and Elijah, suddenly appears in dazzling white and surrounded in glory. The reaction of those Apostles was not one of fear, but of joy. Peter exclaims, “it is good that we are here,” and suggests that they build tents so that they could remain in the presence of such a glorious scene for ever. What the Apostles did not know then, although we have the privilege of realizing now, is that their desire would become the reality of the Church. Each time we come to Mass, Jesus is raised up before our very eyes as he is made present in the Eucharist. As we gaze upon the host we see Christ in the flesh with eyes of faith. And as we receive Him in Holy Communion, he remains with us to strengthen us to be about the work of discipleship. LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. 2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. 6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.
LENTEN MEDITATIONS With Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
Invite God In
“There is not a single soul at which God has not knocked thousands of times. As the sun is always illuminating, so God
is always acting on the soul. Whether we respond or not to God’s summoning of our souls, notice that the first impetus always comes from him. He seeks us before we dream of
seeking him. He knocks before we invite him in; he loves us before we respond.”
From LIFT UP YOUR HEART
“Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with
you, and you with me.” Revelation 3:20

CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players
Bishop Robert Barron’s program showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped
the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization.
St. Francis of Assisi, the Reformer, radically and literally lived as Jesus commanded to transform the Church.
St. Thomas Aquinas, the Theologian, demonstrated that faith and reason are not at odds, as they come from the same
source.
St. Catherine of Siena, the Mystic, gave testimony to the reality of the spiritual dimension here and beyond.
Blessed John Henry Newman, the Convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith.
G.K. Chesterton, the Evangelist, publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of
Christianity.
Michelangelo, the Artist, dramatically demonstrated that beau-ty and creativity are a primary route of access to God.
Journey with Bishop Barron to explore the lasting influence of these Pivotal Players on Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. -
8:00 p.m. in the Bishop Winter Conference Center.
For information please contact Sharon Smoller at [email protected] or 412.661.0187 ext. 118.
THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross devotion commemorates the suffer-ing and death of Jesus as we focus on his steps from Pontius Pilate’s condemnation to His burial. Some people have the blessing of actually visiting Jerusalem and walking the Way of the Cross in the holy city. For most people, the stations are a mini pilgrimage as we move from station to station. A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who make the pious exercise of the Way of the Cross. Those who are “impeded” can gain the same indulgence, if they spend at least one half hour in reading and meditation on the Passion and Death or our Lord Jesus Christ.
