PASTORAL PAGE

It is the prayer of St Mary's Church that we can do all we can to support, listen to

and love all in our parish whether members of our church or not.

The Pastoral Team at St Mary's has recently been relaunched and as part of that

we have introduced 2 things which we pray will be helpful.

Firstly, we have introduced a "Visitor and Phone Call Request" form which is

available in every pew and around church. This form can either be completed for

yourself or on behalf of someone who you believe would appreciate a visit or a

phone call from a member of the Pastoral Team. There is a box clearly marked at

the back of church where you can put the slip. Rev John and Gillian will access the

box and make initial contact, after which a member of the Pastoral Team will follow

it up. (If you are unable to complete the form because you are not in church,

please telephone, text or email Rev John or Gillian).

Secondly, we have launched a Prayer Circle at St Marys. If you have something

which you would appreciate prayer for, we would be privileged to do that, whether it

is a tough week ahead, exams, coming to terms with bereavement, health issues,

whatever you wish to share, in confidence, we will support you in prayer.

To ask for prayer you can either telephone, email or text Rev John or Gillian and

they will place your prayer in the circle. Please be assured your requests are

confidential, and no requests will be seen as too small, frivolous, or unimportant. It

will be our privilege to support you in this special way.

You can contact Rev John via Tel: 01748 821241

Mob Tel or Text: 078 753 48245 and Email: [email protected]

You can contact Gillian on Tel: 075 920 16476 or Email: [email protected]

If you would like to be a praying member of the circle or a member of the Pastoral

Team, Rev John and Gillian would love to hear from you.

Be kind, be thoughtful, be genuine,

but most of all be thankful.

November 2016 Thoughts from The Rectory... Sitting at my desk writing this article for the November magazine, I reflect on being the centre of a time sandwich. We have just had a busy weekend, culminating in a lovely choral evensong during which we said our farewells and thanks to John and Joan Plowman. They have both been involved in St Mary’s in various ways for over 40 years and we wish them every blessing in their new life in Cheshire.

Then, in a couple of days, Liz and I will be away on holiday in Suffolk. The idea is for us to chill out and, of course, the weather will help us achieve that objective – he says while ignoring the weather forecast!. Seriously though, we plan to rest and visit many wonderful places, in addition to having daily dog walks on the beaches. Of course, there are many wonderful places well within easy travelling distance for us in the Benefice, but it takes a concerted effort to take time out and visit them. How often we fail to recognise places of tremendous interest that are on our doorstep! This made me think of how often we fail to recognise very special people with very special God-given gifts whom we see every day – on our own doorstep. It is so easy to take each other for granted.

So how can we know when the person we are with or know is special? Before you say that we are all special in God’s eyes – I know – but for our eyes, what criteria can be applied to find where we score on the specialometer? At the end of October we celebrated All Saints Day, so I looked at the criteria for saintliness as written by Susan Sayers. This seems to be an ideal criteria for scoring on the specialometer:

Went to church a lot

Gave everything away

Lived a long time ago

Miracles happened when they prayed to God

Faced death rather than gave up their faith

Showed God’s love in their life

Were willing to do what God asked them to

Prayed a lot

Helped God a lot

As we thank God for the saints, let us look at the criteria and decide how many of the criteria we match. Perhaps this November we should, as God’s children in this Benefice, help each other to climb God’s specialometer together.

Confirmation

Talking of climbing God’s specialometer together, by having a living faith in a living Saviour, we are delighted that James, Harry, Katie, Keeley and Hannah took a huge step on their spiritual journey when they were confirmed by Bishop James on 11

th October. It was so exciting and uplifting for us all to witness this step in

faith and celebrate the Eucharist with them and their families.

Yours in Christ

John

ADVANCE NOTICE! SAVE THE DATES!

St Mary’s Church, Richmond is holding a Flower Festival

Plans are in place for a week-long Flower Festival commencing on Friday 9th June 2017, with a preview evening followed on Saturday 10th June 2017 to officially launch the event. The theme will be announced next month.

The week will culminate with a Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday 18th June 2017 when all participants will be invited to contribute to and/or attend the service.

We hope that local schools, organisations, and businesses will want to be involved with the event, and they will be approached in the coming months to establish if they would like to participate and present, sponsor or donate an arrangement.

We encourage flower arrangers and volunteer helpers to get involved. If you are interested in contributing in any way, Katrina Templeton would love to hear from you.

Please contact: [email protected] or 01748449300 for more details.

Café Church at St Mary's

In September we were delighted to welcome Rev Canon Judy Hirst to Café Church. She focused on the topic of one of her books, Struggling to be Holy. Everyone enjoyed discussing just what we mean when we talk about being holy.

On Sunday 20th November we look forward to welcoming Kate Bruce. Kate is the Deputy Warden at Cranmer in Durham and is going to speak about ‘Creativity: Divine Gift?’. Kate is a priest, author, theologian, and very gifted speaker.

Coming up at Café Church, we look forward to welcoming Peter Trewby (Sunday 19th Feb.), and Mark Tanner (Sunday 2nd April) who is to be appointed Bishop of Berwick. Everyone is very friendly and we would love to welcome as many people as possible. Refreshments are available from 3.45pm. Please see Wendy or Gillian for details, and find us on Facebook.

Operation Christmas Child (Shoe-box Campaign)

Last year some 1,600 boxes were sent off to Eastern Europe from Richmond (via the packing and sending hubs at Consett and Jarrow – we are part of the North-East network).

Once again you are invited to fill a shoe-box and take it to the Methodist church on any of the dates below where it will be checked. There are leaflets at the back of St Mary’s church, and further information and boxes are available in the Welcome area at the Methodist church.

Help is also needed to check the boxes between 7th and 18

th November on Mon/

Tues/Thurs/Fri from 9.30am onwards. If you haven’t done this before then please come to the Methodist Hall at 9.30am on 7

th November for an initial briefing on

checking (or another day if you are unavailable on the 7th).

Many thanks.

Olive wood products from Bethlehem

This month Anne will again be selling olive wood products made by Christian Palestinian families.

With the construction of the Separation Wall and the continuous expansion of Israeli settlements on Palestinian land, many families become separated from their olive orchards. A group of people from our diocese have been trying to do something practical to help Palestinian Christians, and let them know that they are not forgotten.

A Christian friend in Bethlehem, Ibrahim Jaber, will distribute the money raised from these sales to the local families in time for Christmas. Please continue to pray for justice and peace for both Palestinians and Israelis, whose present and future are inextricably bound together.

Anne Simpson

Bible Society Quiz, Friday 18th

November Some of you will remember the popular Quiz Nights held

in past years. Questions will cover the usual range of

topics, and there will be refreshments. Book the date in

your diary. Further details will follow but start assembling your team – maximum

six!

This first half term is flying by and already we are well into October.

The Christian Value we have been focussing on is ‘Thankfulness’, and we certainly do have lots to be thankful for.

We have just celebrated Harvest at school with parents and carers.

The children in Year 4 and 5 have written poems about being thankful for the foods they enjoy and shared some of their fantastic poems with us. A group of children acted out the story of ‘Stone Soup’, demonstrating the benefits of sharing what we have.

Thank you to everyone for their generous contributions which will be shared between two local charities – the Storehouse in Richmond and The Beacon in Catterick Garrison.

Liz Foxwell

Ed: please see back page of magazine for a Harvest Poem written by one of our children.

9

FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND We met in September when our theme was Harvest, and we thanked God for all his provision and his overflowing love for us all. Gillian told us the story of ‘Stone Soup’, Mark led us in prayers, we sang harvest hymns and we crafted sweetcorn, made hay bales (rice krispie cakes made with marshmallows), decorated thankfulness stones and enjoyed a chocolate fountain (God’s overflowing love!). Our harvest gifts went to The Beacon at Catterick Garrison.

CHRISTINGLE

This year, St Mary’s will be holding our Christingle service on Sunday 27th November at 4pm in St Mary’s Church, Richmond. As both Christingle and Fun-Key Church are for all ages we have decided to combine the 2 services, and double up the fun! So, do come along and enjoy Christingle. And don’t forget, the really lovely Mothers Union team will be there to provide refreshments throughout.

Christingle celebrations - with their oranges and candles and ribbons are a fun family event at our church. The money raised by Christingle this year will go towards the work the Children’s Society does to help children living in poverty in the UK. Christingle is also a good way to help our local families with young children to think about the story of Jesus. Each part of the Christingle orange symbolises the various elements of the story of Jesus, from the love of Christ to the fruits of God’s creation. Piecing it together helps people understand the gospel.

So please support our Christingle this year, and please try and bring some of your friends and neighbours with small children along!

We look forward to welcoming you. Fun, faith and fellowship for all ages. For photos of what we do please see the church website, find us on Facebook, or read our blog at: http://funkeychurchatstmarysrichmond.wordpress.com

BARONESS HALE OF RICHMOND

On Thursday 6th October the Deputy President of the Supreme Court and local of

our town, Baroness Hale of Richmond, travelled to Canterbury to open the new Wigoder Law building at the University of Kent, with chief benefactor Hon Charles Wigoder. This extension will be fundamental for prospective lawyers studying at the university, since new developments for the mooting programme will give students practise handling court room cases in realistic scenarios.

Lady Brenda Hale especially praised the Kent Law Clinic, which is responsible for offering access to justice for underprivileged and vulnerable members of the community who cannot otherwise afford to pay for legal advice and representation.

After opening the new building, the Baroness gave a free, inspirational keynote speech entitled Human Rights and Social Justice, also at the university. The exceptional turnout, which saw the 450-seat Woolf College lecture theatre completely packed out, demonstrates Baroness Hale’s nationally respected reputation.

The Baroness has attended several of our church services over the years, and it is wonderful to see her become such an inspiration to young people throughout the country.

MOTHERS’ UNION

On Tuesday 27th

September we welcomed Peter Trewby to speak at our meeting. The meeting started with a short service incorporating some of the prayers of thanks to celebrate140 years of the Mothers' Union. Peter told us about the epic tandem ride our two Glenisses and their

supporters took during the summer to aid the Bells Appeal. Neither of the ladies had ridden a tandem before, but they practised beforehand and bravely set off, with lots of encouragement from supporters. The ride was called R to R and took place from Richmond in Surrey to Richmond here in North Yorkshire. Jennifer Patrick designed a distinguished logo for the occasion. The Mayor of Richmond in Surrey was there to receive greetings from our Mayor and to see the party off. First stop was the Houses Of Parliament where separate good wishes were received from MP Rishi Sunak and Lady Brenda Hale. Their journey progressed through East Anglia, bell-ringing on the way and accompanied by their own catering van preceding them to be ready with sustenance as the days progressed. One of the memorable stopping places was Lincoln Cathedral where the team felt privileged to ring the bells. As the party progressed through Beverley and York, home was almost in sight. Arrival in Richmond was welcomed by St Mary's bells ringing as an extended party rode up past the church to be welcomed home by our Mayor. A welcome tea (and a celebration drink) party provided by the Belles alias St Mary's Mothers' Union awaited the two Glennisses. All the support party and their friends and relations celebrated with them in the Mayor’s Parlour. Peter then explained to us what will happen when the present bells are replaced and augmented later in the year. He was thanked for a very interesting afternoon. The Mothers Union is 140 years old this year (we know our branch is over 100) and we would like to celebrate at our next meeting. This will be on Tuesday 25

th October

at 2:00pm in the Methodist room. If you have any photographs or scrapbook cuttings, then please bring them along. We will celebrate with tea and cake! There is no meeting in November since the Diocesan (for the Ripon Diocesan Area)Advent Service will be at Colburn on Wednesday 7

th December at 11:45am. We

will arrange transport at the October meeting. Our own Christmas Eucharist will be in St Mary's on Tuesday 13

th December with

tea and mince pies to follow.

Everyone is welcome to our meetings and we look forward to welcoming you.

Margaret Clayson

Letter submitted to The Northern Echo recently by Margaret Emmerson Not Tosh? On Saturday 17

th September, a letter stated that to believe in God is a load of

“tosh”. I can respect that person’s point of view, which many people will share. However, I myself do not agree with them. I am a regular churchgoer: I am there each week to recharge my batteries for the following week. I am also involved in other church events and will always be willing to help in other ways whenever I can. The world God made is being destroyed due to the selfishness and greed of men. I am getting older now and a bit long in the tooth, but as I look back over the years I realise that in certain situations in my life God has been with me, helping me through and walking with me. I am not saint and put my foot in when I shouldn’t, but I hope I can be classed as a Christian.

A Poem for Remembrance Day - ‘The inquisitive mind of a child’

Why are they selling poppies, Mummy? Selling poppies in town today. The poppies, child, are flowers of love. For the men who marched away.

But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy? Why not a beautiful rose? Because my child, men fought and died in the fields where the poppies grow.

But why are the poppies so red, Mummy? Why are the poppies so red? Red is the colour of blood, my child. The blood that our soldiers shed.

The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy. Why does it have to be black? Black, my child, is the symbol of grief. For the men who never came back.

But why, Mummy are you crying so? Your tears are giving you pain. My tears are my fears for you my child. For the world is forgetting again.
