NEWSLETTER No.24 – 9TH AUGUST 2016
Dear Families, Exciting Week: Last week was a busy one as usual.
Debating: Two teams competed last week in the Geelong debating
competition. The topic of “Drugs in sport should be made legal” was a challenging one. One Chilwell team took the negative side in the first debate while the second debate saw our team actively stating the negative side. The audience for both debates was large so thank you to the parents and children who stayed to support our teams. The result was 2 victories for our teams with Anna Callan and Eva Phillips taking out the best speaker for each debate. Again thank you to Rosie O’Donnell and Jason Cole who gave up their time to train and support our students.
Football: Two reps from the team gave a terrific report on Tuesday’s competition. Chilwell won through to the final through great play and teamwork only to meet a strong school team from Essendon. We lost the final but the support for each other and from the boundary line was great. Congratulations to Matt Limb and the team - great effort!!
Netball: Our netball team also represented us last week (Thursday). As always the endeavour was high and the support just as high. Thank you! After tight games and lots of anxious moments our team won through to the State Level of the competition!! Thank you to the supporters and Stephanie Walsh who coached our team. Good luck at the next level, great accomplishment. A photo of the team is in today’s Geelong Advertiser.
Geelong Art Gallery visit: Today a group of our year 6 students are
lucky enough to be invited into the Geelong Art Gallery as part of the Portrait Drawing competition. We look forward to the end “result’ of their work. We certainly have a varied array of talent in our school.
All of these activities happen because our staff go the extra mile. The involvement in all of the above are not prescribed events in schools. They come about because staff support the wider curriculum available. I also want to thank and congratulate the many parents who train and support various teams that compete after school in sporting competition. Training happens after school, as does the games, all because parents are willing to give time to the children.
Assembly: We were fortunate to have a rap song aired at assembly this
week. Both Molly and Gus entertained all with a rap composed by Gus. I need to get autographs before the inevitable fame comes their way. I am also keen to take on the manager’s role! Well done to the two musicians and Rohan, who assisted on the day.
Parent Survey: Thank you to the parents/families who completed the
survey. I will send them off to the Department this afternoon. If you have one unreturned please take the time and return it to school asap and I can post it to join in the feedback already given.
Curriculum Day: A reminder that this Friday is a Curriculum Day at our
school. The day will be used to: Undertake the self-assessment section of the school review. Staff will
examine data, surveys and results to both look back on the school’s last 4 years and plot the goals for the next 4 years.
The second part of the day will be aimed at continuing our reflection of our writing program. Sarah Jeffreys has led us throughout the year in this most important area of our program.
Child care for the day is available via Cheryl in After School Care. The 9-3.30 care does not attract CCB support, however the before and after care will continue to do so. The $35 for the day 9-3.30 is very reasonable but must be paid prior to Friday.
Mini Olympics: Who said that Rio was where the action and sporting
excellence was happening!!! The Prep-2 mini Olympics yesterday was equally exciting and displayed the future of Australian sporting prowess. Thank you to Cathy Burns, staff and the year 6 students who organised the event. Need also to thank the parents who dressed the children in the team colours and came along to share the experience with our children. Look out world sport in a few years!!
Birthdays. Happy birthday to the following students who celebrate their
birthday next week.
Regards, Gavan Welsh, Principal

Yarn Bombing at Chilwell If you wander around the court yards at Chilwell, you will see the start of some beautiful yarn bombing. We are decorating our trees with knitting, crochet flowers and pom poms. Our dedicated students and grandparents have begun knitting each Tuesday lunchtime this term. We would love some more parents and grandparents to be involved. The art room will be open each Tuesday and Wednesday this term for enthusiastic knitters who love to yarn bomb. Please bring your own knitting needles and wool where possible. Everyone is very welcome. Tea and coffee provided. Congratulations to the following students who received an award for Persistence.
Our You Can Do It focus this term is Persistence. Persistence means continuing to do something, or trying to do something even though it is difficult. Don’t give up when things get tough! Tegan and Ella F - YCDI Committee Leaders.

Annual Toucan Appeal 2016……
Think OUTSIDE THE CAN! The Geelong Food Relief Centre has been providing free food to those in need for 25 years. Working together with welfare agencies, this year we will see 32,000 individuals referred to GFRC for support. Your school is one of the 90 schools in Geelong and surrounding region, who every year assist us in making this possible. Each individual donation makes its way onto the family’s table. This could be a family in your street. These items form some of the basic food items most families choose. We are inviting you to be a part of this generous donation to provide if possible the following items. We thank you for ongoing support and assure you it will really make a difference to someone within our community.
Cereal
Milo
Cake mix
Vegemite
Honey
Sugar
Tea/Coffee
Cling Wrap/Foil
Toothbrushes
Feminine hygiene goods
Shampoo/Conditioner
Shaving Cream
Of course, all donations whether cans boxes or packets are gratefully appreciated. Thank you ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Tuesday July 26th, our adorable Preps celebrated their 100th day of school. The students completed a range of activities all based around the number 100, then enjoyed a pleasant morning tea with their buddy and their families. We
have shared some very special days in their first 100 days and we look forward to many more days together full of fun and learning. See below some great photos from their special day. Aaron (PJ) and Meg (PJ) share their favourite memories below.
Challenge questions for all other students: How many days have you been at Chilwell so far?
How many more do you have to go?
