Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club – Celebrating 103 years
TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club since 1973.
October 9, 2013 Vol. 41 No.2 www.two-blues.com.au
Great start to the summer by Bryan Thomas – Coach
Three wins and a highly competitive performance from the 4ths mark a great start to our season.
If you don’t know about the 1st’s great win yet, check your pulse. The Addy featured Ben Neville’s heroics, and so they should. It was a marvellous performance from one of our club’s most marvellous contributors. This bloke is a blue blood.
But there were other little things worth noting as well, not the least Chissa’s efforts behind the stumps, then with the bat, on debut.
Some other people I’d like to single out are the four new captains. What a great job they are doing. Fossie, Shiv and Twads all had winning starts to their new roles.
I have no doubt Terry Hickey will be a winning captain very soon.
As coach I wander around the club quite a bit, hearing this, seeing that.
One thing I do see is that we have some very good leaders on the field, and some very fine leaders off the field.
Our President is a doer, an absolute beauty. He just never stops. I don’t know when he sleeps. When he does sleep, he probably dreams about what has to be done next at the rooms, or some other calamity around the club that needs to be fixed.
So I see that we have some very good chiefs … some things I am hearing though make me think we need a few more doers around the place.
If you see something that needs to be done, don’t go off into a corner and huff and puff about it and try and big note yourself by telling everyone this or that hasn’t been done.
Put your hand up and do it.
That was probably one of the few disappointing aspects of the weekend, hearing blokes criticising instead of doing.
To paraphrase John Kennedy, don’t criticise, just do something.
One positive that we must acknowledge was the work of GT and Simmo to get up the wicket at Queens Park. The weather had been very unkind to us, with a few more heavy showers than
other parts of Geelong received putting our wicket – and our curatorial staff, under severe pressure.
Thankfully, Simmo and GT are doers and because they are, we not only got a game on Saturday, but a great game that produced six points. That’s what happens when you have doers doing, instead of critics criticising.
Let’s see what we can all do next weekend.
The Pom returns Jonno Carpenter is back in Australia, spending the season with Hampton in Melbourne. He’s planning to get down to catch up with us at the first opportunity. His mobile, if you want to make contact with him beforehand, is: 0474 134 169. In other news about our “Poms” Sam Arthurton has got a contract with Essex. And the original Pom, Jaikie Mickleburgh, had a very good season in County Cricket, including a century and a double century. He also scored 93 for Essex in a trial game against England before the Poms thrashed us in The Ashes.
NCCC playing attire ‐ REMINDER
As is the case with the start of the year, our cricketing attire always needs to be reviewed.
You should only be wearing:
NCCC approved hats – being the club issued “baggy” blues or “flexi” fitting hats – available at the club to purchase for $ 20 & $ 40 respectively
White shirts with NCCC emblem attached to the breast of the shirt – shirts are available for purchase at De Grandi’s Cycle & Sport in Moorabool Street, Geelong (Emblems are attached by the supplier but we need to have done in a minimum order of 6 so please get your shirt to the club early this week or as soon as possible so it can be arranged for you – See Morgo)
Cricket Pants – available for purchase from De Grandi’s in Geelong
Training shirts & pants – limited stocks are held by De Grandi’s in Geelong and they will also affix the sponsors & rear of shirt brandings (Shirts @ $ 40 & shorts @ $ 20)
White or cricket socks (ie, Not dark or black)
This is a simple matter but one that makes us all look & be both “professional” and consistent across the board.
Will be following up with each captain this week on attire for ALL grades and contacting each person that needs to be assisted with the above

AFTERNOON TEAS
One thing we take great pride in at Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club is the afternoon teas we put on for visiting teams.
A good afternoon tea has the right balance between fruit, sandwiches and the sweet stuff.
Let’s make sure we get that balance right every week. Buying cakes, cookies or Tim Tams at the last minute from the supermarket generally ends up with an unbalanced spread on the table.
So where possible, go the sambos/fruit route.
