Major parks in Brimbank could be dotted with cafes under new plans being considered by Brimbank council.

Seeking community input in updating its Creating Better Parks Open Space and Playground Policy and Plan, the council has hinted at the creation of cafes and/or coee facilities at municipal/agship parks.

e updated plan, aimed at identifying new opportunities and any gaps in the current

Cafe plan for park loversplan, also signals consideration of cycling infrastructure and skate facilities.

e council will look at creating a community resource group and will contact about 300 Brimbank community members for expressions of interest.

Council infrastructure and environment director Paul Younis would not say which parks would be targeted.

Other councils have introduced cafes in parks, he said. ese are managed in various ways, including private businesses under

a contract arrangement with the council. Council has not considered at which parks, if any, this type of service may be provided.

e aim is to rst ask the community what they want from the parks.

He said the inclusion of cycling and skating facilities in the updated plan had been driven by local associations such as bicycle user group Brimbug.

An example of how this could be included is the recent proposed dra Ardeer Green Activity Hub Master Plan, which proposes

a criterion circuit, BMX track and dirt bike jumps, Mr Younis said.

Council has recently sought community input into this proposal and will now nalise the master plan for adoption.

e council may also take into consideration studies being undertaken by Deakin University and the Cancer Council on usage impacts following park upgrades.

With 83 parks upgraded in Brimbank since 2008, council says park usage has increased signicantly.

Football is about to meet fashion again, via the second Vogue in the Village fundraiser for Keilor Football Club.

Lyndall Blackmore and friends Jody Morris and Lisa Taylor organised the rst vogue event last year, helping raise about $10,000 for the club.

Ms Blackmore is hoping this years event will be just as popular.

Hopefully, the hard work will pay off and the club will benet from it.

The big night on Wednesday, June 24, will include a fashion parade showcasing outts from local boutiques. The ladies behind the footballers including mums, girlfriends, wives and sisters will strut their stuff on the catwalk.

The footballers, too, will do their bit minus the fashion as shirtless waiters.

Anyone wanting a sele with the lads will also need to make a donation to support the senior teams end-of-year trip.

Taleisha Lanzano and Kane Barbuto (pictured) have already started preparing for the big night, which will offer champagne on arrival, a light supper, goodie bags and entertainment. Auctions and rafes will also help raise money.

Ms Blackmore says the football club welcomes women and families, and shes encouraging everyone to come along.

Vogue in the Village is from 7.30pm at the Keilor Football clubrooms.

    Tickets are $40. Call Jody on 0434 947 757.

Police are urging Melton and Caroline Springs residents to lock garage doors following a spate of garage and shed burglaries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks, of the Melton crime investigation unit, said power tools, remote controls and even cars and motorcycles had been stolen from garages in the past few weeks.

Remote controls oen provide the opportunity for oenders to return and gain access at a later time, even if the garage is locked, Detective Senior Sergeant Jenks said.

[We] advise that garages and sheds should be locked whenever you are not at home, and overnight.

Police say that about two weeks ago, oenders broke into a Melton West home some time between 10am and 1pm, taking a speed boat and trailer, valued at about $80,000, a large sum of cash and a large quantity of jewellery.

A blue sedan was spotted in the driveway on the day of the burglary.

Police say the oenders forced open the garage door before making their way inside the home.

Once in the home, they ransacked all rooms

27-year-old Melton man, arrested last week, could be linked to a number of other garage and shed burglaries in the Melton area.

Police allege that about 2pm on Tuesday, June 9, the 27-year-old used an axe to break the lock on the front gate of a Kurunjang home before stealing a motorcycle.

Shortly aerwards, Melton highway patrol spotted the oender on the stolen motorcycle then intercepted and arrested him. He has been remanded in custody, charged with burglary, the and possessing a drug of dependence.

An Aboriginal mother has been le reeling aer her three-year-old daughter was the victim of a vicious racist attack during a trip to Taylors Lakes.

Ballarat resident Rachel Muir took her daughter, Samara, 3, to a Disney-themed childrens event at Watergardens shopping centre last month.

Dressed as Queen Elsa from the animated lm Frozen, Samara waited for two hours in line for a childrens snow pit.

But the day ended in tears when Samara was subjected to a spate of racial slurs from a mother and her two daughters waiting in line.

e lady in front of us turned around to Samara and said: I dont know why youre dressed up because Queen Elsa isnt black, Ms Muir said.

en one of the womans young daughters screwed up her face, she pointed at Samara and said youre black and black is ugly.

Ms Muir said she was le stunned by the hateful comments.Samara burst into tears and hid her face behind her hands.

I looked around the line and there were little girls of all dierent races lining up dressed as their favourite Disney characters, Ms Muir said.

We were in Melbourne, one of the most multicultural places in the world.

Nobody is born into this world a racist. It is learnt behaviour. It can be changed.

Ms Muir complained to the shopping centres management and found the sta to be extremely apologetic.

She said the shopping centres management told her antisocial behaviour was not tolerated.

The giant puppets created for Light Up Sunshine back in March will take centre stage at Federation Square on Saturday from 5.45pm. The puppets were created by young people from Brimbanks Pacic Islander community working with Snuff Puppets as part of an Australia Pacic Arts Network project. They will be performing the Tongan legend Maui Steals Fire from the Underworld, one of the Creation myths from the Pacic performances staged at the recent Mai Pasika lm festival. Project manager Katrina Chandra says the puppets are addressing a lack of Pacic Islander cultural events in Melbourne. Theres nothing else like this. Theres very little of Pacic arts in Melbourne, but theres such a big Pacic community, she said. This is about learning about our culture. Brendan Kelly

For refugee and author Abdi Aden, the journey from Somalia to living on the streets of Melbourne aged 15 and eventually becoming a youth worker was more than enough preparation for whatever life may throw at him.

It wasnt easy for me at rst I used to have nightmares and headaches from what happened in the war, Aden said. But then I would try to do at least one thing that makes me happy for the day. Maybe just have a nice cup of tea, maybe just talk to my family or a friend I havent seen in a while.

Aden went on to complete secondary education and later a university degree.

He became a youth worker, won 2007s Victorian Refugee Recognition Award and appeared in the second season of SBS

Western Metropolitan MP Cesar Melhem has stepped down from his role as state government whip citing press speculation over his senior role as the reason.

Drivers are being warned to slow down and buckle up aer an alarming Queens Birthday weekend tally of speeding and seatbelt oences.

Police ooded Brimbank roads as part of Operation Regal, a statewide road safety blitz from Friday, June 5, until Monday, June 8.

Speeding and seatbelt oences topped the list in Brimbank, with 70 speeding oences and a further 42 cases of not wearing a seatbelt detected.

    Brimbank highway patrols Sergeant Bill

Joannidis said. Uniformed police will then intercept these motorists at roadblocks further up the street. Speeding will also remain a focus of enforcement with every highway patrol unit tted with speed measuring devices, such as lasers and radar speed detectors.

    Sergeant Joannidis said mobile speed

Joannidis said he was alarmed by the number of drivers caught speeding and the numbers not wearing seatbelts.

[ese are] two alarming gures. Speeding contributes to collisions and vehicle occupants not wearing seatbelts increases the level of injuries when these collisions occur, he said.

Sergeant Joannidis said Brimbank highway patrol would continue focusing on seatbelt oences.

is operation consists of plainclothes police acting as pedestrians and observing seatbelt and mobile phone oences, Sergeant

cameras would be strategically placed at high- collision locations where speed was a factor.

Our message to road users is to slow down, especially in the winter months when roads are wet, he said. We also advise drivers and passengers to buckle up whenever they are in a car, as seatbelts do save lives.

Eleven mobile phone oences were also detected during Operation Regal.

Other oenders in Brimbank included one drug driver, four drink drivers and eight unlicensed drivers; and 26 unregistered vehicles were found.

Enthusiastic Brimbank youngsters took the plunge last weekend for a swimathon charity event aimed at reducing drownings in Vietnam.

Paul Sadler Swimland students and sta were helping raise money for Swim Vietnam, a charity that provides free swimming lessons to children and trains Vietnamese adults to be swim instructors.

Drowning is the leading cause of death in children aged one and older in Vietnam. At least 10 children drown there every day, according to Vietnam health ministry statistics.

Swim instructor Anthony Agostino (pictured) swam for about two hours, clocking up sponsored laps and funds as he went.

He was joined by students from as young as three, who also took part in the swimathon.

Swim centre founder Mr Sadler said every students contribution would make a positive impact on the lives of children at risk of drowning in Vietnam.

Its astounding to see the dedication of our students to this cause not only sourcing sponsors for the event, but also their personal training to prepare, Mr Sadler said.

Paul Sadler Swimland is hoping to raise $30,000 for Swim Vietnam from the events across its various centres.

Water police have urged people to learn from the boating tragedy that claimed the lives of three shermen.

On Monday aernoon, the mood was bleak at Altona boat ramp as news trickled in that a third body had been found aer the three men went missing on Sunday.

Steven Do, 30, his brother David, 31, and their friend, Phong Nguyen, 35, all from Sunshine West, had launched their tinny from Altona about 11am on Sunday.

Senior Sergeant Mark ORourke said the trio bought their small aluminium punt ve months ago and were inexperienced.

I think, essentially, its just theyve gone out in really ordinary conditions in a boat that wasnt suitable in those conditions, he said. is time of year, your timeframe for survival in the water, being 13 degrees, is not very long.

Seaholme Boat Owners Association member Ramon Harris described Sundays conditions on the bay as treacherous.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said the average wind speed was about 30 knots, or 55km/h, and waves would have been up to 1.5 metres overnight.

It was not until a sherman spotted the trios upturned boat about 4pm on Sunday that the mens family members and police realised something was amiss.

Four Coast Guard boats, a police boat, a helicopter and search and rescue squad divers trawled a 120-square-nautical-mile area for the three men, while family members kept a vigil at

Altona boat ramp.Julie Lieu, the girlfriend of Steven Do, said

the men always enjoyed shing together.Life isnt meant to be fair, she said. One mans body was found about 10am on

Monday, nine kilometres south-east of where the upturned boat was found. e body of the second sherman was found about two hours later, about four kilometres south of the rst.

e third body was located about 2.30pm, about a kilometre north of where the second body was located. According to police, the men were wearing lifejackets.

Senior Sergeant ORourke said there were no restrictions on that type of boat being in the bay, but this one had been more suited to inland waterways. He said there were a number of things peole could learn from the tragedy: use a suitable vessel for the conditions, be aware of your boating and swimming capabilities, and wait for favourable bay conditions.

Make sure you have all the correct safety equipment and you know how to use it, in particular, PFDs, which are personal otation devices, lifejackets.

Let people know where youre going and, again, have a plan in place in case something goes wrong so you can self-rescue and be able to survive. with e Age

    Boat tragedy warning

Make sure you have all the correct safety equipment... - Mark ORourke Western suburbs residents are banding together to help asylum seekers sow the seeds of a better life.

In just a few weeks, e Veggie Wagon, an oshoot of the grassroots West Welcome Wagon, has helped set up three asylum-seeker households with vegie gardens.

WWW vice-president and Newport resident Marnie Kelly said asylum seekers oen lived in areas without adequate public transport, making access to fresh food challenging.

ey are also surviving on very limited incomes, which puts items like herbs and some fruit and vegies out of nancial reach.

Over the past 18 months, several asylum- seeker households have been supported by WWW to start their own vegie gardens.

Ms Kelly said this had had a profound eect

on food budgets, as well as self-esteem and overall self-suciency.

Each household receives basic garden tools shovels, rakes and hoses, along with fertiliser, pots and seedlings.

e project, supported by donations, is also aimed at strengthening community ties.

My goal is to help set up one vegie garden a week and provide ongoing guidance to those who need it, Ms Kelly said.

e response has been fantastic; we have almost 100 members of the group in just a few weeks.

An elderly Deer Park woman feared for her safety aer being trapped on a bus on Station Road for about an hour.

e passenger, who did not want to be named, said she caught the 420 bus regularly and had never felt so scared.

She said her bus was en route to Watergardens when the driver spotted a passenger with a bottle of beer.

e woman said the driver told the man alcohol consumption was not permitted and to leave the bus.

She said the passenger, who she believed had

a disability, was not threatening or harming anyone at the time.

When he refused to leave the bus, she said, the driver became aggressive.

e woman said the driver stopped the bus and grabbed the man by his hands to lead him o, but he still refused.

e bus driver then shut all the doors and called the police, she said.

e man said to the driver, Open the doors and I will go out and catch another bus, but he didnt open the doors.

He said, Im not letting you out, not only him but nobody, she said. Everybody on the bus was scared.

    Passengers stranded over booze

We were scared of the driver, who was yelling and walking up and down.

e woman said all passengers were forced to wait about an hour on the bus until police arrived.

She said she had not been able to sleep since the incident and was now too scared to catch public transport, even though she has no other way of getting around.

The bus driver then shut all the doors and called the police - Deer Park woman

A Sita Group bus company spokesman said the driver had acted according to protocols. He said it was illegal for passengers to consume alcohol on buses.

We have told bus drivers, at all times, if theres any danger with intoxicated people, they need to contact police, he said. Unfortunately, when you call triple 000, you must wait at that area and there are delays.

He said there had been a number of assaults on bus drivers and passengers could have le the bus, but no one wanted to leave the bus because they werent at their destination. He said that more oen, passengers complained if the bus driver did not act in such a situation.

e Country Fire Authority responded to 1700 res in the northern and north-western suburbs during the rst three months of this year.

New gures reveal the CFAs district 14, which stretches from Yarra Glen to Melton, recorded the states second-highest number of res in that quarter.

District 14 operations manager Trevor Roberts said his teams had responded to many grass, bush and open-paddock res in the three months.

During summer, we even had a signicant number of roadside res, which are oen caused by motorists discarding cigarettes, Mr Roberts said. Cigarette butts need to be disposed of appropriately. eyre not to be thrown from a vehicle; they should be put out within the actual vehicle.

He said res starting from cigarette butts

could spread very quickly in certain conditions. Although the re danger period is over, Mr Roberts said people needed to stay vigilant, especially given that district 14 crews were called to 1500 res in the three months between April and July last year.

e trend of res at this time of year is that they start to be more around the home and a lot of them are from around heaters, clothes- dryers, even dishwashers, Mr Roberts said. Also, people are starting to use appliances that havent been checked properly and for a long time.

e CFA has re-launched its annual Safe Mistakes campaign to warn about common, but dangerous, mistakes made around the home. Check out Safe Mistakes at safemistakezone.com.au

Almost all Sunbury line trains ran as per schedule in the month of May, but on punctuality, services fell marginally below the lines annual average.

A total of 92.4 per cent of trains ran on time, compared to the 12-month average of 93.2 per cent.

However, the Sunbury line scored its best results in terms of service delivery with 99.4 per cent of trains running the best since June last year.

state government discovered there werent enough V/Line trains to run on the line.

A Public Transport Victoria spokesman told Star Weekly last month the link would provide a massive boost to train services from Deer Park station to Southern Cross.

From Deer Park, some journeys will take

Meanwhile, the Ballarat line recorded its best results for punctuality since February with 95 per cent of trains running on time.

In May, almost all of its trains (99.4 per cent) ran as scheduled the lines best result since last November.

e gures come as Brimbank commuters await the June 21 opening of the $4.3 million Regional Rail Link, a 45-kilometre link between Southern Cross Station and West Werribee, which also incorporates Sunshine, Deer Park and Ardeer stations.

e links opening was delayed when the

as little as 21 minutes to Southern Cross, compared to 24 to 28 minutes on the current timetable, he said.

e link is the rst major expansion of the states rail network in more than 30 years and is designed to separate regional and metropolitan trains.

e government maintains the delayed opening of RRL means commuters will be spared chaos and confusion.

Star Weekly revealed last week that a 6.08am Ballarat train line service departing from Deer Park would no longer be available.

A Keilor Downs College graduate was among 279 top achievers lauded last week at the Premiers VCE awards.

Geetha eiventhiran, 19, who graduated from Keilor Downs College last year, was acknowledged for her near-perfect score in sociology 49 out of 50.

Geetha said sociology and global politics were her two favourite subjects at secondary school, which was probably the reason she scored so well. I did put a lot of eort into the subjects I wanted to excel in.

Geetha said she picked up sociology as a subject for the rst time in year 12 aer she had enjoyed studying politics in year 11.

Now studying for a double degree in arts and commerce at Monash University, Geetha says a lot of study and commitment are the keys to success in year 12.

But it should not be all work and no play, and she encouraged year 12 students to make time

to do the things they love and remain social and active outside school.

Dont just focus on the studying aspect of it, enjoy yourself as well; thats the main thing, Geetha said.

I know its stressful, but while studying you should take part in social activities and enjoy your hobbies, too.

For Geetha, Indian classical music lessons helped take her mind o things, and her family and teachers had given her great support. ey helped get me through it. I could rely on them to help me feel less stressed, she said.

Sociology teacher James Milner and college principal Stuart Andrews were also at the Melbourne Convention Centre for the awards.

I think its equally rewarding for my teacher as well because he did play a large part in me getting the score, she said.

Brimbanks annual kerbside hard waste collection will start at the end of the month, but residents are still chasing answers aer the cancellation of the bundled green waste collection.

Star Weekly recently reported that Albion resident Christopher ONeill had taken it on himself to survey 100 randomly chosen residents aer the cancellation.

His survey found more than 67 per cent of respondents used the yearly bundled green waste service.

Mr ONeill submitted his ndings to the council in a bid for answers.

Not satised with the outcome, Mr ONeill last week put forward another question at the council meeting.

He asked what the yearly tonnage of waste in the bundled green waste collection was for each year from 2010.

In 2010-11, the total amount was 878 tonnes; in 2011-12 it was 1386 tonnes, with a further 1288 tonnes collected in 2012-13 and 1117 tonnes in 2013-14.

We can see that since 2009 more people have used it and continue to use it, Mr ONeill said.

e data shows that, even if there is a decrease, its still relatively high.

Ultimately, council has cancelled the service and they wont reinstate it.

eyve not consulted the community in making this decision and have not provided a real alternative.

Mr ONeill said it was not a viable option for residents to pay for a green waste bin, and a free alternative was needed.

Brimbank infrastructure and environment director Paul Younis said the cost saved to council from the discontinuation was absorbed into the budget for delivery of services that beneted the broader Brimbank community.

Council has discontinued its annual bundled green waste collection service because there is a low participation, with about a third of our residents using the service in comparison to 50 per cent of residents who have opted for a kerbside green waste collection, Mr Younis said.

He said residents had the option of the fortnightly kerbside green waste collection or the at-call, user-pays bundled green waste collection.

Green waste collected by the council as part of the fortnightly green waste bin collection is turned into garden products, including potting mix, mulch and compost.

Hard waste collection dates and more information can be found at www.brimbank.vic.gov.au.

A raw Kealba airconditioning apprentice has been rewarded for throwing himself in at the deep end, beating a tough eld of seven to take out a state trade award.

Christopher Walsh (pictured) was named outstanding apprentice at the state awards for apprentices, trainees and host companies in Bulleen on May 26.

e awards acknowledge and support the hard work of apprentices who go through apprentice and trainee programs.

Mr Walsh, who is completing a certicate 3 in refrigeration and airconditioning, said it had been a steep learning curve.

At the start, coming in raw, I didnt really know what I was getting myself into, but

Ive found myself involved in something Im really suited to, and Im very happy to make a career of it, he said.

Ive been introduced to a work style Id never done before, and its really developed my skills.

Mr Walsh says hes thinking of expanding those skills.

I would be interested in specialising within my trade and even committing myself to a dual trade if it was on oer in future.

A furious Brimbank resident will go to court rather than pay a council parking ne she claims is unfair.

Marlene, who didnt want her surname published, told Star Weekly she was denitely not going to pay the $148 parking ne she received when dropping her son o at secondary school in St Albans.

Im so upset, Marlene said. What a ridiculous amount for dropping o your child at school. Id rather do community service, or lock me up.

Community health provider cohealth, another agency serving areas of greatest need across the state, will get about $100,000 from the budget.

WHW chief executive Robyn Gregory said this would ensure that more than 200 children would be able to use the service each year.

A Sunshine councillor has thrown out a challenge to councils caucus. Cr Howard Brown said he would not be gagged by caucus and would continue to speak out. Cr Browns attack on caucus follows a recent direction to him not to make statements to the press. Councils caucus recently decided that only the caucus secretary, Cr Ian Mill, was empowered to speak on behalf of the ALP councillors.

We head rst for a certain Williamstown pub we believe now has $15 roast lunches on the menu but, on arrival, we discover they will not start until the following weekend.

Plan B is return home, park the car and walk to our local, the Railway Hotel, which has been advertising $18.50 Sunday roasts sort of a middle ground, price-wise, with two kinds of meat on oer.

Will it be worth the extra dollars? We pay, get our number and wait.Bennie chooses the pork.I try a mouthful.Perhaps not surprisingly, its dry but good

    CONSIDER THE SAUCE

e beans, broccoli and carrots may be steamed but they are wonderful cooked more than al dente and perfect.

I select the roast beef. Its fabulous. It appears to be smothered in good gravy. But

as it turns out there is just enough gravy and only just enough to support the meat.

I am served three slices that are just shy of half an inch thick.

e meat is tender and tastes grand. It breaks apart in strands that Im more

familiar with from dining on brisket at barbecue joints.

is is new and wonderful territory for me when it comes to roast beef.

ere is so much of it, I keep oering Bennie hey chunks even as I close in on the nal slice.

I am on a serious food high as we skip down the street for some sugar and spice from our fave ice-cream joint.

e Railway Hotel Sunday roasts have convinced me that sometimes, at least, you do get what you pay for. And its still a bargain.
