e Albion man accused of the murder of Doncaster schoolgirl Masa Vukotic allegedly embarked on a crime spree in Sunshine in the hours before his arrest, according to police.

Sean Christian Price, 31, has been charged with the digital rape of a woman at the Word Christian bookshop on Harvester Road at 11.20am on ursday, half an hour before he handed himself in at Sunshine police station.

e 41-year-old victim was discharged from Sunshine Hospital that aernoon.

Word co-chief executive Craig Moulton said he was in disbelief and doing everything

Rampage victims traumapossible to support the sta who were working at the Sunshine shop at the time.

eir physical and emotional health is more important than business and well do what we can to help them through this horric experience, he said.

e two sta members who were on duty during the alleged attack were doing OK under the circumstances, he said.

Mr Moulton declined to say whether the victim was a sta member.

He said the company was providing counselling for all sta and family members involved in the ordeal and the store would be closed until sta could return to work.

Mr Moulton praised Salvation Army workers based next door to the bookshop for their exceptional help in the situation.

Police approached a nearby gymnasium for any security vision outside the bookshop at the time of the attack, but the gyms cameras were not facing that direction.

Renee Bonetti, who works at a nearby pet shop, said she feared for her safety.

So many of us who work here are female. Now were scared at work; no one wants to walk at night, she said. But we want to know [whats happening in the area]. I know it might be frightening, but we want to know.

    Brimbank crime investigation unit detectives

are also investigating other incidents allegedly involving Price on the same day.

ey said that in the rst incident, a knife was pulled on a Sunshine man and his phone was stolen on the HV McKay pedestrian bridge near Devonshire Road about 10am.

e 26-year-old victim was taken to Sunshine Hospital with unspecied injuries.

A man also unsuccessfully tried to carjack a vehicle belonging to a 77-year-old Braeside man on McCracken Street.

Price appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on March 20, charged with two counts of robbery, three of common assault and rape. He was remanded to appear again on June 26.

Kings Park Primary School pupils were tickled orange last week during an early Harmony Day celebration.Physical education teacher Tony Kurvink said pupils across all year levels donned orange and decorated the school hall in the fruity hue for last Mondays school assembly. We acknowledge all the different cultural backgrounds all our students come from, he said. Staff got in on the fun with a special morning tea, with teachers bringing traditional dishes from their cultures for colleagues to try.Harmony Day is held every year on March 21 to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Its also a celebration of Australias cultural diversity.According to the Harmony Day website, about 45 per cent of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was. Apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, Greek, Vietnamese, Filipino, Spanish and Hindi.

A couple whose world was shattered beyond repair aer losing their only son have honoured the Sydenham school that supported them in their darkest days. Riddells Creek couple Steve and Joanne Gibbs lost their son, Matthew, 23, who collapsed and died playing indoor soccerin 2013.

Mrs Gibbs, a Catholic Regional College sta member for 17 years, said principal Brendan Watson and sta at the Sydenham campus cant be thanked enough. e Gibbss have nominated the college for a compassionate employer award, which is given to employers who support sta going through bereavement.

Mrs Gibbs, a support and administration staer, said she hoped the award, given to the school on March 13, showed how

grateful she and her husband were. ey were amazing, she said. Brendanand everyone treated us with the utmostrespect and dignity and made it, I cant say easy, but much easier. ey gave us the time to grieve.

Mr Watson said he did what any employer should do and oered his full support, as did the 116 sta members.

When you lose a child, as no parent should have to, the grief would be horrendous so we did all we could, Mr Watson said.

eres no policy for this; we just banded together. Compassion needs to be how you live and what youre about. Its not about just going to church every Sunday; that doesnt make you a good Catholic. Its about how you live life and treat others.

One-hundred extra police in Brimbank and Melton have been given the credit for a mammoth 11 per cent drop in crime.

Figures from the newly-formed Crime Statistics Agency reveal that 17,304 crimes were committed in Brimbank in 2014 down 11.2 per cent on 2013.

But the city still had the h-highest number of oences across the state and the third-highest number of motor vehicle thes.

Meanwhile, family violence incidents have jumped from 2054 recorded incidents in 2013 to 2245 in 2014.

hurting the community and acting on that. It sometimes wont look like that because of those bigger crimes you have from time to time, Inspector Gilbert said.

But at the end of the day weve been able to impact on safety over a couple of years and were pretty condent were still on track to maintaining reasonable levels through this year. Were very, very focused on prevention,

Inspector Chris Gilbert said robberies had dropped 42 per cent from 314 to 181 and there had also been falls in burglary arson and property damage.

He said the 100 extra police deployed in Brimbank and Melton in recent years had meant a focus on recidivist oenders and an increased police presence on the streets, all of it contributing to the fall in crime.

Its a big drop for us, and thats on the back of reductions from the previous year as well, Inspector Gilbert said.

Were delivering a really robust service in Brimbank at the moment. We think were doing a really good job in identifying whats

rather than cure. e more work we can do to prevent crime whether its through visibility, the way we deploy or community- strengthening exercises the less crime well see over time.

Inspector Gilbert said police would continue to focus on family violence, deception particularly the use of tap-and-go cards by thieves and the of, and from, motor vehicles.

We have reductions in our property crime, but at the end of the day that number would drop signicantly again if we were able to get people to take that little bit more care with their personal property, he said.

Crime falls as cop numbers rise Were doing a good job in identifying whats hurting the community - Chris Gilbert

Coppereld College students have not had to endure the high seas to enjoy the bounty of a Community Chest.

e secondary school has been given $2500 from Morgans IGA in Delahey as part of the supermarkets community donation program.

Coppereld College principal Tony Simpson said the 1900 students would use the money to undertake community service and other projects.

We need money to release teachers to organise these things and make those partnerships, so were hoping to do more of that and reinvest the money in community-based projects, Mr Simpson said.

We already have close local connections with the retirement village and Brimbank

council, so this will enable us to keep the kids involved in those sorts of things. Were a big school and every bit helps.

e IGA Community Chest raises fundsto support communities and charities, mainly through the purchase of products with an IGA Community Chest logo ontheir label. From every product purchased with the logo, two cents go towards the Community Chest.

Two dumped kittens whose ears had to be surgically amputated to save their lives are in need of a forever home together.

e pair of white kittens, named Otto and Lucy, were among a litter of four dumped in the Brooklyn industrial precinct.

Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue (WSCKR) last week responded to a call from a factory worker who found the kittens when he arrived at work.

WSCKR founder Nathan Miles saidthe kittens, aged between 12 and 16 weeks,

but yet they must have been le in the sun pretty much continuously because their ears have had to come o.

e ears looked terrible. ey were all bald and full of scabs according to the vet, there was cellular damage to the ear cells, which is the beginning signs of cancer so the

were very aectionate and obviously domesticated.

When rescuers collected them, thetwo white ones were in urgent need ofmedical attention on their bloodied and infected ears.

Vets at the Lost Dogs Home determined both cats would need their ears removed to save their lives.

Whoever owned them before they dumped them, they basically le these kittens out in the sun white cats are very prone to sun damage, Mr Miles said. e shocking thing is, I mean theyre only kittens

decision was that they had to be removed for the long-term welfare of the cat.

Mr Miles said good homes were sought for all four, but he wanted Otto and Lucy to be adopted as a pair.

Because of everything theyve been through they have to go to an indoor-only home and it would make sense for the two of them to go together, he said..

ese poor kittens were neglectfully cared for and then cruelly disposed of like rubbish.

Brimbank council has thrown its support behind new smoking bans which come into force near childcare centres, kindergartens and other locations on June 30. e bans will prohibit smoking in the grounds of and within four metres of the entrances to all Victorian childcare centres, kindergartens, preschools, and primary and secondary schools.

e bans will also operate within four metres of an entrance to indoor play centres,

further outdoor smoking bans across the city.

ese changes reect concerns about both the health issues related to smoking and eorts to improve the amenity of public areas where people, especially children, visit, he said.

e state government has tightened outdoor smoking laws in recent years with bans already in place in enclosed workplaces, including restaurants and shopping centres, covered areas of train platforms, bus and tram shelters, at underage

public hospitals, registered community health centres and certain state government buildings.

No smoking signs will be placed at each of these locations once the bans are in place.

e state governments Tobacco Amendment Bill 2014 will also quadruple the penalty for possession of illicit tobacco by retailers and wholesalers up to $177,000.

Brimbank council city development director Stuart Menzies said the council fully supports the amendment but said there were no immediate plans to enforce

events and enclosed licensed premises, including gaming rooms.

Smokers can be ned $147 for smoking in a no-smoking area.

e national drug strategy survey found fewer Australians smoked than ever before and rates had halved since 1991, to 13.3 per cent in 2013.

e survey also found the proportion of dependent children exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke inside the home had declined from 31 per cent in 1995 to 3.7 per cent in 2013.

    Council backs new smoking bans

Like something out of a fairytale, giant pumpkins have started cropping up in a Taylors Lakes backyard.

Retiree Ralph Mathews is bemused by the large pumpkins that have grown in his vegie patch this season, with one whopper weighing 16.2 kilograms.

e 61-year-old said this season had been his rst attempt at growing pumpkins.

And so far he has grown multiple pumpkins weighing between 10 and 16 kilograms using only water, fertiliser and mulch.

Mr Mathews has dubbed the large vegetables Cinderella pumpkins. But despite their considerable size and weight, theyre not quite big enough to transport storybook princesses.

We didnt have much space in our backyard so I planted a small plot of pumpkin seeds, he said.

Im not doing anything special . . . Ive

grown corn and tomatoes and some beans. I retired last year and have a bit more time on my hands so Ive taken gardening a bit more seriously.

Were giving lots of [the pumpkins] to family and friends.

Mr Mathews is not the only Brimbank green thumb to have success in home-growing gigantic vegetables.

Star Weekly has also reported metre-long Star Weekly has also reported metre-long Star WeeklyAsian melons growing from a pergola in a Keilor Downs backyard and a 1.5-metre zucchini growing in the vegie patch of a Sunshine North family.

A Brimbank resident has expressed concern about the stability of a Sunshine footbridge, saying it felt like a little earthquake when she crossed it.

Sunshine West mother Marina Bear said the HV McKay pedestrian bridge moved when she was crossing with her pram early last week.

It bounced it bowed down and then up like a wave, Mrs Bear said.

e bridge, opened in January last year, crosses the railway tracks between HV McKay Memorial Gardens and Harvester Road.

It was so obvious that people walking in the opposite direction also stopped and looked down, Mrs Bear said.

My husband said bridges do ex a bit, but it seemed excessive.

e wind speed on that day was an average of 17.6km/h, with a high of 38.9km/h.

e Regional Rail Link Authority (RRLA), which built the footbridge, said it was structurally sound.

Its important to understand that all bridges are designed to ex, a spokesman said. is provides it with greater structural strength than a completely rigid design.

e bridge can withstand about 93 tonnes of weight. e bridge meets the Australian Standard for bridge design, which include requirements for wind loadings, pedestrian loadings and even earthquakes, the spokesman said.

    Priscilla Moca

    Shaky bridge declared safe

Jake the dog is just another member of the family to four-year-old Kyri.

For councils, dogs are a bit more than that. Brimbank council is calling on pet owners in its borders to look aer all dogs and cats by paying their animal registration fees by the due date of April 10. Fees start at $32 for dogs and $21 for cats. City development director Stuart Menzies said pet owners needed to act responsibly and ensure that dogs and cats were registered, desexed and microchipped. Having pets registered not only saves owners from an expensive ne but is an eective way to have a pet returned if it goes missing, Mr Menzies said.

Figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal that

2617 stray or lost cats and dogs were found roaming Brimbank streets in the 2013-14 nancial year.

Of the 965 dogs collected, 851 were reclaimed by owners, while the rest were made available for adoption through the Lost Dogs Home.

But most of the 1652 cats collected by the council were classied as feral and put down.

Registration forms can be downloaded from www.brimbank.vic.gov.au or picked up at the councils customer service centres.

Bali death mysteryThe heartbroken family of a St Albans woman who mysteriously died in her sleep in a Bali hotel is waiting on an autopsy to explain why she died. Michelle Smith, 54, was found by her sister, Cynthia Smith, in bed at the Akmani hotel in Legian on March 13. Michelle had an acquired brain injury sustained as a child. Cynthia, her full-time carer, said her sister fell ill days after arriving on the holiday island and had sore ears, a sore throat and a chest infection. Ms Smith said Michelle was prescribed medication, believed to be penicillin, but her condition deteriorated. Local police seized the medicine and are analysing it as part of their investigation. The family is waiting on approval from its travel insurance company to repatriate the body.

Bodies foundRemains found on the Mornington Peninsula last weekend are believed to belong to two divers, including a St Albans man, who disappeared earlier this month. The divers have not been seen since getting into trouble while diving for shellsh near rocks at Fingal Beach, near Cape Schanck, on March 7. The missing divers were a 42-year-old man from St Albans and 34-year-old man from Vermont South. A third diver, a 50-year-old Keysborough man, was able to make it to shore and raise the alarm.

A Keilor psychologist is hoping her new website can help young people who are grappling with mental health issues.

Justine Knott, a practising psychologist for 20 years, has launched Coping4Kids to educate children and parents about issues such as anxiety, anger, social skills, bullying and stress management methods.

Ms Knott says Coping4Kids is a free and accessible way for young people to access support.

Most kids now are tech savvy, and technology empowers them to access support, she said. My goal with the website is to help more children because many, such as those in rural areas, dont have access to a local psychologist.

A new Monash University study has shown

that Brimbank has 67 psychiatrist services and 26 psychologist services for every 1000 people, compared with neighbouring Moonee Valley, which has 129 psychiatric services and 62 psychology services per 1000 people.

Ms Knott said children were not given enough credit for their resilience.

Kids have good intuition and they do have the inner resources to help themselves, she said. ey just need some guidance and support along the way.

Ms Knott said about 30 per cent of child patients she saw at Keilor Psychology suered from anxiety and about 16 per cent had depression.

More than $30 million went into state government coers last year from selling o surplus land in Brimbank, with ve more sites facing the auctioneers hammer.

Figures from the state Department of Treasury and Finance reveal the state netted $23 million from selling the proposed Sydenham North Primary School site on Robertsons Road last October.

In Victoria, only the former Brandon Park Secondary College in Wheelers Hill fetched a higher sales gure last year, bringing in $47.5 million.

e state reaped more than $7.2 million from selling the former Sunvale Primary School site in two parts.

Surplus land sales have netted Brimbank council nearly $10 million in the past ve years.

Figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal that the council sold six parcels of land across the city between the 2009-10 and 2013-14 nancial years for a total $9,792,500.

e former Liberal state government was preparing to sell the former Calder Rise and Keilor Park primary schools sites, the Kealba secondary college site and the former Western autism school site in two parts before it was ousted in the November election.

State Education Department spokesman Simon Craig said the department was advising the new Labor government on the status of these former Brimbank school sites.

If the Labor government goes ahead with selling the sites, each will be assessed for market readiness and may be subject to rezoning before being sold, according to the Department of Treasury and Finance.

at process could take several years.e department oered to sell the

sites to Brimbank council last year, but administrators voted against the purchase.

Keilor resident Virginia Tachos said she was worried the land would be bought by developers who would want to build units or townhouses.

Ms Tachos believes the sites should be used for parkland, technical schools and other community uses, and is particularly keen to see the former Calder Rise site turned into a cricket ground for Keilor Cricket Club juniors.

She said selling the sites would be a short- sighted decision considering the growth in the area and corresponding demand for more public primary and secondary schools.

She said she felt it was a case of land being sold to plug the budget hole.

We feel like its land thats really valuable, and to sell it would close a lot of opportunities for the community.

    IN FOCUS WYNDHAM ADVERTISEMENT

    The Patient Centered Medical Centre

I remember I rst wanted to be a doctor when I spent a substantial amount of my childhood and early adulthood in hospital with poorly controlled asthma.

ose early experiences of being on the patient side of the doctor-patient relationship taught me many things about the type of doctor I would like to be and also some role models that were more like cautionary tales of course.

Nobody in my immediate family or our circle of friends had been in medicine or even in health so my interest was piqued by my own experience.

en one evening in mid July when I was aged 14 it was cemented as my career path when I was woken to nd my mother and close family friends in my bedroom. Your father has passed away they told me though I knew from their expressions it was

    serious before anyone spoke.

He died at 42 from a heart attack.a preventable and premature passing which would serve to re my passion for excellence and dedication to the role of the GP

I chose General Practice because I thought that was where you could make the biggest dierence, in the community and keeping people out of hospital.

I worked for 10 years in medicine in various locations but mostly in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne and never quite found a clinic that satised all of my criteria.is in turn lead led me to setting up a clinic in Caroline Springs in May of 2003 to put all that I had learned into practice with my business partner Jarrod an accountant taking responsibility for those things outside of the clinical realm but a critical part of a well-functioning clinic.

And so Modern Medical was born (albeit we started as Caroline Springs Medical Centre initially) with a very basic philosophy that drives us to this day work in a clinic that I would love to be a patient in. We started with myself and two receptionists on day 1 in Caroline Springs

and now to our present day busy and thriving purpose built and community centred clinic of today.

As part of our commitment to excellence we have assembled a great team of GPs, nurses and support sta and we have moved to a purpose built clinic on the Western Highway with ample parking, integrated allied and specialist services as well as an aer hours clinic open until midnight every day (other than public holidays). Lake Imaging radiology service has just opened nearby. We have innovative services such as online appointments and a speedy self check in service in the clinic with more patient centred services to follow.

Shortly we will have a pharmacy next door meaning that this facility truly will be a one stop shop as we imagined it would become.

I am proud to have grown up with Caroline Springs and look forward to the next 12 years of Modern Medical in this area!
