    Ever wanted to meet a famous author? Or polish your own writing talent? Next month is your chance, at no charge, through the 2014 Brimbank Writers and Readers Festival. From 4-15 September the festival will off er more than a dozen literary events, which include panel discussions, author talks and readings, workshops, interviews, storytelling, workshops for adults, teens and children, a pop-up library and more.Authors on the program will include John Safran, Luke Ryan, Oslo Davis, Spiri Tsintziras, Melissa Keil, Justin Heazlewood,

    Torre DeRoche, Eugenia Flynn and Chrissie Perry. The Festival kicks off on 4 September, featuring an evening with author John Safran in conversation with Melbourne writer and freelance journalist Paul Bateman, at Visy Cares Hub Auditorium, in Sunshine from 6.30pm. Last year the festival drew more than 800 participants, so making advanced bookings is advised. Interested festival goers can also join in online discussions and share their favourite festival pics to Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #BrimbankWRFestival.

    Sunshine Film Festival wins award!

    The Sunshine Business Association has won a Maintreet Marketing award for running the annual Sunshine Film Festival. This award recognises initiatives which help the community to prosper. The festival will screen the winning fi ve minute entries at Sunshines Village Cinemas on 31 October. This years theme is Halloween. Entries are still open and close 30 September.

    Errington Community Centre Redevelopment- community session Find out about Brimbank City Councils multimillion dollar redevelopment of Errington Community Centre at a community information session on Wednesday 20 August at 6pm at Errington Community Centre, Princess Street St Albans.

    Detailed designs will be discussed by the projects architect at the session, this includes the performing arts space that will be funded by a generous contribution of $2.5 million from the St Albans Community Centre Co-Operative Ltd.

    The redevelopment of the Errington Community Centre is a key project of Stage One of the Errington Precinct Master Plan, which was developed through community engagement and in consultation with the Errington Community Reference Group.

    Kids Day Out- EOIs

    Brimbank City Council will host another exciting line-up of activities as part of its Childrens Week event, Kids Day Out, which will be held at Errington Community Centre and Reserve on Sunday 26 October. The days celebrations focus on program content for children aged 1-10 years. The Kazoos and Mik Maks will be performing at the event and Expressions of Interest are currently open through an online application process for additional stallholders, food trucks, and performers suitable for children.     A group of Keilor residents is furious at state government plans to sell former Brimbank school sites.

    One of the group, Virginia Tachos, said she was worried the land would be bought by developers to build units or townhouses.

    She said the land should be used for parkland, technical schools and other community uses.

    The state government is preparing to sell the former Calder Rise, Deer Park and Keilor Park primary school sites, and Kealba secondary college site, as well as land in McCubbin Drive, Sydenham North.

    According to the department of treasury and finance, which is overseeing the sale, each site will be assessed for market readiness and may be subject to rezoning before being sold.

    The department offered to sell the sites to Brimbank council earlier this year, but administrators voted against the purchase.

    Ms Tachos and fellow resident Brendan Jamieson want to see a cricket and football oval to complement the one in Keilor Village.

    Niddrie MP Ben Carroll has sided with residents and said he will write to state Education Minister Martin Dixon requesting that any proceeds raised from the sales go back into the local area.

    A spokesman for Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said the sites in question were closed by the previous Labor government and left abandoned, derelict and decaying.

    Proceeds of land sales are reinvested back into important new infrastructure, such as the $19.4 million pledged by the Coalition government for the Sunshine College redevelopment and $200 million for the removal of the Main Road, St Albans, level crossing, the spokesman said.

    Two mixed residential and commercial developments proposed for Sunshine will go beyond requirements for disabled access, with apartments designed especially for people with disabilities.

    The developments, in Hampshire Road and Sun Crescent, are awaiting consideration by Brimbank council.

    Architects Joe M Draftings proposed 32-unit and office complex at 254 Hampshire Road includes one one-bedroom apartment fitted with grab rails, wider doorways, pulldown drawers and other easy-access features.

    Herniman Groups planned $9.5 million development in Sun Crescent includes two two-bedroom apartments with similar features.

    The Australian building code has specific requirements for disabled access to new buildings, including lifts, stairs, ramps, toilets and corridors in office blocks, shops, hotels, motels and the general areas of apartment buildings.

    But while disability access has been part of the code since 1990, the focus has been on commercial and public buildings.

    In 2010, the federal government, the housing industry and community leaders agreed to a voluntary change in housing practices with the aim of providing minimum access features by 2020.

    A council spokesman said developers were encouraged to go beyond the minimum standards set out in the building code.
