The basic detailsThis course is delivered over a six month period and
is available through either distance or flexiblelearning modes of study.
Who is this qualification for?This qualification is ideal for people who work forlocal authorities dealing with homelessness; thosewho work for housing associations or voluntarysector organisations that work with homelessnesspeople; housing advisors; those who provide ormanage support services for homeless people.
This course is also an ideal grounding for thosewhose future career paths may be taking themtowards working with homeless people or those withaspirations to do so.
This qualification has four mandatoryunits
Unit 1: Homelessness Services andPrevention (3 QCF Credits)
Understand the statutory framework for theprovision of services to people who arehomeless or threatened with homelessness
Know about accommodation and services forpeople who are homeless or threatened withhomelessness
Understand how homelessness may beprevented
Unit 2: Involving housing Service Users (3QCF Credits)
Understand why service user involvement isimportant in housing in a range of settings
Know a range of opportunities for service userinvolvement in housing
Understand how to plan for service userinvolvement
Unit 3: The role of the support worker forindependent living (3 QCF Credits)
Understand the values and principles thatunderpin support services for independentliving.
Understand the role of the support worker insupporting identified needs, goals andaspirations of individuals
Understand the role of the support workers insafeguarding individuals
Unit 4: Professional Practice Skills (4 QCFCredits)
Know how to develop personal organisationalskills
Understand how teams can work effectively Understand the key communication skills and
techniques in the work environment
Know about key customer service skills Understand how to plan training and
development needs
Understand the range of services thatpromote greater independence and inclusion
for young people
Flexible or distance learning?
Distance learning
If you choose the distance learning route, you canstart the course when it suits you and you will workthrough on-line learning materials with regularemail and telephone contact with a personal tutorto support and monitor your progress through thecourse.
Flexible learningIf you choose the flexible learning route, you will beallocated to a regional course when one becomesavailable in your area. The flexible course will bedelivered via four study days.
In-house option
If there are several people in your organisationwho would like to complete the Certificate, wecan work with you to set up a flexible learningcourse in-house
What help and support is there?If you have not studied recently and lack confidenceor study skills, let us know so we can give you thesupport you need. Similarly, if you have a disabilityor if English is not your first language, we will workwith you and provide you with the help you need toensure you are not disadvantaged in workingtowards this qualification.
During your studies you will be supported by yourpersonal tutor, the dedicated student support teamat the Centre for Housing and Support and on-line
via the CHS Moodle site.

What are QCF Credits?The QCF is the Governmentsframework forrecognising vocational achievement through theaward of credit for units and qualifications acrossEngland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Standardisedtitles have been introduced which will makevocational qualifications easier to understand and acentralised database will help to track credit andprovide learners with an online record of their
achievements.
Under this framework single Units are awardedcredits. This course earns you 13 QCF Credits.
Can I progress beyond thisqualification?This Level 3 qualification places you firmly on theladder to vocational progression. You can, forexample, complete further units to gain the Level 3Certificate in Housing Practice.
What else do I get?Students will receive free membership to CHS forthe period of their study. This entitles them toreceive the weekly news update Thursday@Three,the centres weekly email update bringing news offurther training opportunities, special offers and
useful free information. Students also receive theQuarterly Good Practice e-zine.

What does it cost?
Distance Learning
The Centre for Housing & Support course feeincludes all your tuition for the year plus yourdedicated personal Tutor support via telephone,email or on-line.
The Fee is 521 + the CIH Registration fee
applicable at the time of booking.*
Flexible Learning
For the flexible learning route your fee also coversthe cost of the attended study days. The Fee is 787plus the CIH Registration fee applicable at the timeof booking.*
* The Chartered Institute of Housing Student Registration Fee forthe Certificate is 117 at time of publication. This includesStudent Membership of the CIH and a subscription to InsideHousing, the CIH weekly magazine.
