PRISMIC® Power Management Systems at Bonny Island, NigeriaIntroductionBonny Island is situated at the southern edge of Rivers State in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. In the early 1990s the Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with 3 international partners, Shell Gas BV., CLEAG Limited (ELF) and AGIP International BV. started the multi-billion dollar project to create Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Limited.

Engineering consultants acting on behalf of Nigeria LNG recommended BRUSH to provide a reliable and bespoke Power Management System for their existing and new power generation plant.

The PRISMIC® PMS was required to control the voltage, frequency, watts and VArs of the on-site generators and operate as a single panel unit with a local and a remote desk HMI for the operator interfaces. A serial communications link using MODBUS RTU protocol to a third party monitoring system was also included for bi-directional data gathering.

The initial installation and commissioning of this system was successfully carried out. The PMS was soon called upon during operation under a live scenario. Load shedding prevented a power blackout and the PMS continued to control the electrical plant as 2 independent power systems.

The successful operation forged positive relationships and confidence for future business. Nigeria LNG had no hesitation in using the PRISMIC® PMS as their ongoing Power Management solution for their rapidly expanding LNG and power generation plant,

System DescriptionThe evolution of the LNG plant and power generation projects is summarised below along with the PRISMIC® PMS modifications necessary to maintain the reliable management of the power system.

BRUSH PRISMIC® Worldwide Locations

System DescriptionThere are three intelligent PRISMIC® PMS control units installed at Bonny Island that are interconnected via Ethernet over a fault tolerant fibre optic ring. The PRISMIC® PMS is required to operate as a single unified system when all the control units are interconnected and able to control the individual stations when they are running islanded. All of the individual PMS units can perform master control of the system depending on the state of the fibre optic communications bus, leading to a highly reliable, multi-redundant system.

The site has three local human machine interfaces (HMI) and one remote HMI. Each HMI allows full control of the entire system allowing any alarms within the system to be rapidly resolved. All manually initiated commands are controlled according to a comprehensive password hierarchy.

BRUSH supplied the Bonny Island site with a PRISMIC® PMS simulator that allows training of operators without any effect on the live system. Using an identical configuration to the actual Bonny Island PMS, it provides a safe environment for swift PMS training where multiple scenarios can be replicated without serious consequence. The simulator is also used to test each stage of the PMS software before installation onto the live system.

The PRISMIC® PMS has provided a robust, reliable and scalable Power Management System solution, bringing major benefits to Nigeria LNG. Reliability and security of the electrical power system has ensured that their critical processes and operations are undisturbed with significantly reduced power outages. This has increased the plant uptime and the ease with which the entire system can be monitored and controlled.

Equipment Controller by PRISMIC® PMS10 Turbine/Generator sets (Totalling approximately 350 MW generation capability)• 6 33/11kV transformer tap changers.• 110 loads• Control and monitoring of over 183 circuit breakers.• 122 motors.• 6 transformers.• 18 bus sections.•

Key PointsFrequency and real power control via engine governors.• Voltage and reactive power control via generator AVRs on a per sub-station basis.• Interaction with tap changer control system• Fast acting load shedding in the event of a generator or interconector CB tripping.• Gradual overload load shedding due to excessive increase in load demand.• Under frequency load shedding.• Load shedding of appropriate loads in the event of a transformer overcurrent.• Load start inhibits to prevent loads being started during periods of insufficient • spinning reserve and when there is insufficient power capability for larger compressor loads.Turbine power capability based on the fuel type and ambient inlet temperature • enabling use of realistic power capability values for all the PMS calculationsInterconnector and bus tie synchronisation.• Control logic for DLN sets.• Setpoint load control for turbine water wash facility.• Numerous status monitoring alarms•
