Saxophonist and Composer Eric Per-son left his native St.Louis in 1982 looking to see what the New York City jazz scene had to offer. His first gig was performing with the John Hicks

Big Band and everything took off from there. Person performed among a diverse array of jazz artists such as Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, Chico Hamilton, World Saxophone Quartet, Dave Douglas, Donald Byrd, Houston

Person, Ronald Shannon Jackson and many others. He’s also been fea-tured with rock and funk icons Vernon Reid, Ben Harper, and Bootsy Collins.

Person is also a leader with eight CD’s to his name. His latest CD The Grand Illusion (2010), was re-viewed by critic Donald Elfman of All About Jazz who declared that “Eric Person seems to find some-thing new to say and a different di-rection to follow with every project he undertakes ... the music seems daring at this time...” In Jazztimes, Critic Bill Milkowski reviewing his Rhythm Edge CD (2007) called Person “a risk-taking improviser, accomplished com-poser and inveterate swinger.”Critic Russ Musto of All About Jazz Magazine has said that “Person is more then fine; he’s a major talent of his generation.” Since the mid-80’s Person has led various projects on stages across the USA, Canada, and Europe. He’s collaborated with other musi-cians to form three important col-lectives: Sources, Moon Pool and the latest TrioKinesis. He features his composing, arranging and en-ergetic improvisations in his Meta-Four. Tonight’s performance will fea-ture Mr. Person and his electric band Metamorphosis. It features the dynamic keyboard work of Adam Klipple, the rhythmic and

harmonically open Adam Armstrong, and drummer Shinnosuke Taka-hashi who’s never out of place in the groove. n

In a recording career that spans al-most three decades and 24 albums, Grammy Award-winning saxophon-ist Kenny G has grafted elements of R&B, pop, and Latin music to a jazz foundation, solidifying his reputation as the premier artist in contemporary jazz. Since the early ‘80s, his combi-nation of unparalleled instrumental chops and indelible melodies has resulted in sales of more than 75 mil-lion records worldwide (45 million in the U.S. alone) and more than a dozen climbs to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart. Inspired by the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire and Grover Wash-ington Jr., Kenny was only 17 when he landed a gig with Barry White and his Love Un-limited Orchestra at the Para-mount Northwest Theater in 1973. After high school, gigs with R&B and contemporary jazz artists like White and Jeff Lorber kept coming. In 1982, he landed a record deal with Arista and launched a solo career with three critically ac-claimed jazz albums – Kenny G (1982), G-Force (1983), and Gravity (1985).

By the ‘90s, Kenny was a multi-platinum seller and a frequent collaborator with some of the most iconic figures in American pop-ular music, including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole, and Frank Sinatra. His subsequent studio albums Silhouette (1988) and Breath-less (1992), were hugely successful, the latter selling more than 12 million records in the U.S. alone and spawn-ing the Grammy-winning single, “For-ever in Love.”

Another major career highlight for Kenny was Miracles, a 1994 holiday album that took the saxophonist to the top of the Billboard chart for the first time and has since become the best-selling holiday album of all time. His two holiday albums since then - Faith (1999) and Wishes (2002) - have been similarly successful. After the success of Rhythm and Romance (2008) and Heart and Soul

(2010), the second of which was a re-turn to the classic R&B sounds of his Seattle childhood, Kenny has taken a step in a new direction with his latest release, Namaste India (2012). A col-laboration with Indian santoor player and vocalist Rahul Sharma, the al-bum captures both the natural medi-tative sound of Indian classical music and the flamboyant jazz melodies of the saxophone. n

Tonight jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan and pianist Steve Kuhn join forces for an unforgettable performance. Old friends and longtime collabora-tors, these two artists will present an intimate evening of entertainment in celebration of Jordan’s 84th birthday. One of the premier singers in jazz, Jordan is known for both her scatting prowess and her emotive treatment of jazz bal-lads. She be-gan her career in New York in the early ‘50s, singing in clubs and at jam sessions with some of the city’s jazz giants includ-ing Charles Mingus, Her-bie Nichols, and Charlie Parker (she u l t i m a t e l y married Park-er’s pianist, Duke Jordan). Shortly after making her re-corded debut with George Russell, Jor-dan released her solo de-but, Portrait of Sheila Jor-dan (1963), on Blue Note Records, making her first female vocalist to record for the label. By the late ‘70s, jazz audiences be-gan to understand her uncompromis-ing style, and her popularity has been blossoming ever since. Over a career of a half-century and counting, Steve Kuhn has earned re-

nown as one of the most lyrical and affecting pianists in jazz, with an unfailingly beautiful touch and a so-phisticated sense of swing. Having worked with John Coltrane early in his career, he boasts an impressive resume that also includes extensive collaborations with titans like Stan Getz, Al Foster, Ron Carter, Eddie Gomez, Joey Baron, and more. He’s also maintained a longstanding rela-

tionship with Manfred Eich-er, the founder and producer for ECM re-cords – a part-nership that has produced a justly ac-claimed series of recordings, the latest of which is Wis-teria (2012). Of course, Kuhn has also enjoyed a longstanding musical rela-tionship with Jordan that stretches back to the ‘70s. The pair’s re-cordings to-gether include P l a y g r o u n d (1979), Last Year’s Waltz

(1981), Jazz Child (1998), Little Song (2002), and Life’s Backward Glances (2009). Considering the depth and length of their friendship, there is cer-tainly no better pianist to help Jordan celebrate her birthday. n

Jacqui Naylor can only be described as supremely versatile. The vocal-ist and songwriter’s unique style is an alchemy of jazz, pop, and rock, with touches of gospel, folk, blues, and even a little humor sprinkled into the mix. She can be downright chameleonic, perpetually keeping her listeners guessing – is she a jazz chanteuse at heart, or is the folk singer-songwriter avenue more her calling? The answer? Both, and so much more. Don’t for a minute think that the breadth of her artis-tic palate belies a lack of depth or identity, however. Whether ca-ressing a soft ballad or lacing a soulful line through a deep funk groove, Naylor’s subtle inflections and rich, smoky alto are instantly recognizable and uniquely her own. Raised in Saratoga, California, Naylor first became interested in music through her parents’ collection of antique automated instruments and vintage jazz re-cordings. She didn’t initially real-ize that her taste wasn’t exactly contemporary. After pursuing mar-keting in college, she discovered music was her true calling and began studying with renowned San Fran-cisco vocal coach Faith Winthrop. Subsequent years found her honing her vocal skills singing with the Sa-cred Heart Gospel Choir and training with Shirley Calloway. In 1997, she returned to San Francisco to make singing her full-time career. It didn’t take long for the jazz com-munity to embrace Naylor as her mu-sic won fans of old-time aficionados, new jazz enthusiasts, and devotees

of modern adult pop music alike. She released her self-titled debut on Ruby Records in 1999, inaugurating a string of successful albums that in-cluded I Remember You (2003), Shel-ter (2003), The Color Five (2006), and You Don’t Know Jacqui (2008). She’s performed at the Blue Note, Ronnie Scott’s, The Monterey Jazz Festival, and other renowned venues, and several of her recordings have made

Top 10 lists in publications like USA Today, JAZZIZ Magazine, and The Washington Post. Naylor celebrated the national re-lease of her eighth and latest record-ing, Lucky Girl (2011), with a perfor-mance at the Blue Note last year. Tonight, she brings her wide vocal range and innovative style back to the club for an intimate set that will include both sensitive treatments of jazz standards and her captivating originals. n

It’s been just about 40 years since Tim Hauser paid his bills by driving a New York City cab while aspiring to form a harmony vocal quartet sui ge-neris. In the fall of 1972, Hauser met Laurel Masse, Janis Siegel, and Alan Paul in fairly quick succession. The rest, as they say, is history.

In 1974, The Manhattan Transfer be-gan performing regularly throughout New York City at Trude Hellers, Mer-cer Arts Center, Max’s Kansas City, Club 82, and other cutting-edge cab-aret venues. By the end of the year, the group was the top live attraction in New York City. Quickly signed to Atlantic Records, the quartet re-leased its self-titled debut in 1975, which spawned the group’s first na-tional hit, “Operator.” In 1978, Masse was injured in a car accident and during her convales-cence, decided not to rejoin the group that had since moved to Cali-

fornia. One of many who auditioned for her slot was Cheryl Bentyne. At her dazzling audition, the other Transfer members immediately felt her impact, invited her to join, and, as Paul puts it, “The Transfer’s sec-ond phase began.” The first album featuring the now-legendary quartet

of Hauser, Siegel, Paul, and Bentyne was 1979’s Exten-sions, which earned the band another smash hit with “Twi-light Zone/Twilight Tone.” The group garnered numerous Grammy Awards and nominations throughout the ‘80s, including a monu-mental 12 nomina-tions for the 1985 album Vocalese. In the ‘90s, The Manhattan Trans-fer’s restless cre-ative energy found the group writing more original ma-terial and tackling

seasonal standards, children’s mu-sic, popular music from the ‘50s and ‘60s, and different genres of swing music. The ambitious quartet has kept its pace of excellent and often groundbreaking releases well into the new millenium, with albums like The Spirit of St. Louis (2000), Couldn’t Be Hotter (2003), Vibrate (2004), The Symphony Sessions (2006), and The Chick Corea Songbook (2009). The group recently welcomed Bentyne back to the fold after an arduous but successful battle with cancer and is currently working on a special proj-ect called The Vaults, commemorat-ing its 40 years of incredible vocal jazz. n

Ice Cream Everyday (Blisslife Re-cords), Amel’s upcoming fourth solo album, is slated for release in 2012.

An urban chanteuse by birth, Amel Larrieux grew up in a West Village “artists building” in New York City, her parents exposing her early to a community of artists and artistic experiences that would mold her eclectic sensibilities. At the age of 18, sure that she wanted to express herself mu-sically, Amel wrote and demoed a song, which led to her pairing with Bryce Wilson to form the duo Groove Theory. As lead vocalist and co -writer for the group, she enjoyed success with “Tell Me,” which broke the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top five on the R&B charts before being certified gold in Octo-ber 1995.

Released in April, 2006, Morning (Blisslife Records) was Amel’s third solo album. She used it as an oppor-tunity to explore the endless range of promise and potential — as well as the disappointments — in being human. Flying high with a Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals Grammy nomination for her work on Stanley Clarke’s “Where is The Love,” Amel Larrieux stretched her wings in Bravebird (Blisslife Re-

cords), her second solo work that was released in 2004, rising coura-geously into atmosphere untouched by her contemporaries.

In her solo debut in 2000, Infinite Possibilities (Epic Records), Amel fuses a range of genres – R&B, soul, hip- hop, jazz and folk, with flashes of Middle Eastern, West African, and Indian styles.

Amel has con-tributed to film soundtracks, writ-ing and singing in such films as Barbershop, Love Jones, Down To Earth, Sunset Park, Takers, and Why Did I Get Married.

Equal to Amel’s vocal and writing talent is her al-luring beauty and eclectic style. She has been spot-lighted as a style

maven in Essence, Honey, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Lucky Maga-zine, Trace, The Fader and other magazines and was also featured in the Coach anniversary print cam-paign. More recently her vocal talent and beauty have been central to Co-ca-Cola’s “Keep It Real” campaign in television, radio and print ads. She is also a trained dancer and a dedi-cated yoga enthusiast.

She is happily married to manager, producer and musical collaborator Laru Larrieux and they are the proud parents of two girls, Sanji-Rei and Sky.n

Read any of the dozen or so biog-raphies on jazz-pop chanteuse Cas-sandra Wilson and you’ll discover some basics. She was born and reared in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s and ‘70s by musician and educator parents. She studied pia-no for 13 years and played clarinet in junior high concert and marching bands. During the ‘70s, she could be found p e r f o r m i n g Joni Mitchell songs behind an acoustic guitar, in front of a large funk band, or in the com-pany of long-time friends in an all-girl band. In the ‘80s, Wilson moved to New Or-leans and p e r f o r m e d with Earl Turbinton and Ellis Marsa-lis. Quite by accident, she was relo-cated to East Orange, New Jersey, where she made a decision to take her chances on the New York jazz scene. After a stint as the main vo-calist with Steve Coleman’s M-Base Collective, she began recording on her own. Her development can be tracked through her discography. From the standards on Blue Skies (1988) to the Grammy-winning New Moon Daughter (1995), and from the com-bination of originals and interpreta-

tions played by a collection of Mis-sissippi and New York musicians on both the Belly of the Sun (2001) and Glamoured (2003), to her more recent albums Thunderbird (2006) and Lov-erly (2008), Wilson has always con-tinued evolving as a vocalist, song-writer, and producer. Silver Pony, Wilson’s most recent al-bum, is the latest step in her evolu-

tion. Released at the end of 2010, the album is a unique hybrid, moving seamless-ly between live recordings from a European tour and studio recordings laid down at Piety Street Studios in New Orleans. The project was pro-duced by Wilson and John Fisch-bach and features a mix of jazz and pop classics, as

well as songs newly written by Wil-son and her band. In addition to her own releases, in 2000 Wilson returned to Mississippi to establish Ojah Media Group, an independent multi-media entity dedi-cated to documenting and marketing the unique sounds emanating from Mississippi’s fertile soil and its multi-cultural influences. The group’s ros-ter includes Yoruban musician Le-kan Babalola and singer-songwriter Rhonda Richmond. n

Mystical yet fiery, passionately ro-mantic yet supremely cool – you hear those first few notes from that in-stantly recognizable tenor, and know you’re in the unique musical world of Gato Barbieri. His enduring ca-reer has covered virtually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-’60s, to film scoring and his ulti-mate embrace of Latin music throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Barbieri began playing tenor s a x o p h o n e with his own band in the late ’50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Mi-chelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded two albums for Blue Note: Complete Communion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Compos-er’s Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chico O’Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period.

Barbieri recorded a handful of al-bums on the Flying Dutchman label in the early ’70s and then signed with the Impulse imprint, where he record-ed his classic Chapter Series: Latin

America (1973), Hasta Siempre (1973), Viva Emiliano Zapata (1974), and Alive in New York (1975). While at Impulse, he also composed the Grammy-winning score for the film Last Tan-go in Paris (1972) – an achievement he parlayed into success as a film composer, scoring a dozen interna-

tional films over the years in Eu-rope, South A m e r i c a , and the U.S. By the mid-’70s, Barb-ieri’s coarse, wailing tone began to mellow, a change evi-dent on his ’70s A&M recordings. H o w e v e r , early ’80s dates like the live Gato

… Para Los Amigos (1984) saw the saxophonist reclaim a more intense, rock-influenced South American sound.

Barbieri returned stronger than ever with the 1997 Columbia offering Que Pasa, the fourth-highest-selling con-temporary jazz album of that year. Since that reemergence, he has con-tinued to release albums, including The Shadow of the Cat (2002), which won Billboard’s prestigious 2003 Latin Jazz Album of the Year award and garnered a Grammy nomination, and New York Meeting (2010), his lat-est release. n
