Known as “the Picasso of Jazz Pia-no,” JoAnne Brackeen is consistently ranked by critics and jazz magazines as one of the best jazz pianists in the world, along with Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, and Chick Corea. Her writing is remarkable for its creativity, stylistic range, emotional depth, and whimsical spirit. Her storied career does indeed invite parallels to Picasso; like the great visual artist, she has consistently de-fied convention, remaking herself and her art many times over. Her playing is virtuosic and wholly unpredictable, dense and richly detailed, rhythmically advanced and consistently, effortlessly swinging.

She now records regularly for the Arka-dia label. Her newest quartet outing, Friday: Live at the Jazz Standard, features her working group with Ravi Coltrane on tenor sax, Ira Coleman on bass, and Horacio “El Negro” Her-nandez on drums. This new, excit-ing release comes on the heels of the Grammy®-nominated Pink Elephant Magic (1999) and the solo piano tour de force Popsicle Illusion (2000). JoAnne’s next studio session, Pepe’s Favorite Cartoon, features Paquito D’Rivera and represents the next chap-ter in her continuing fascination with Latin music.n

Jazz vocalist Deborah Davis returns to the Blue Note stage in her 16th annual Benefit Concert for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The proceeds from this evening’s performance will be do-nated to the Society for blood-related cancer research and patient services.

Deborah Davis is a gifted singer and consummate performer that has cap-tivated audiences throughout the world. A jazz singer fused with the gos-pel, Texas Blues, a whole lot of soul, a natural flowing charm, and flawless

stage presence, Deborah Davis draws you into her show. A native of Dallas Texas, Deborah began singing as soon as she could speak. Her first inspira-tion towards a jazz career was when her high school choir director, jazz pia-nist Robert Sanders added her to his weekend gigs. Deborah went on to earn a music education degree in vo-cal studies from North Texas University and subsequently an A.A. in recording engineering. Her musical development brought her to New York City in 1986, where she has carved out a niche for herself on the U.S. East Coast and In-ternational jazz scenes.

Deborah’s distinct style of phrasing, extraordinary singing ability and pro-fessionalism earned her a nomina-tion of U.S. Jazz Ambassador by the U.S.State Department in 2004. She has sung for dignitaries at United Na-tions & Embassy affairs including a performance for former President Bill Clinton. Deborah was invited d to Athens, Greece by the U.S. Embassy to headline a benefit concert for Hur-ricane Katrina victims. Known to musi-cians as a hard swinging singer Debo-rah has had invitations to perform with legendary jazz greats Ray Brown, Lio-nel Hampton and Clark Terry, as well as an rare opportunity to substitute for Abbey Lincoln here at the Blue Note. Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, and Lou Donaldson have all shared their stage with Deborah inviting her to jam. Not limiting her talents to the jazz audi-ence, Deborah has shared the stage with Bon Jovi and Billy Joel and sung with The Shirells. While sining in the house band at Monte Carlo Summer Festival ’08 she opened for Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Macy Gray, Diana Ross, Santana, Chicago, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, Alanis Morisette, and Jamie Cullum. n

Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the now infamous Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quar-ter to playing festivals and stages all over the world.

Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature

brand of brass funk has won over sev-eral generations of music lovers, and in a post-Katrina world, their name and music have become the soundtrack to their musically rich hometown.

In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Re-birth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slow-ing down. n

John Pizzarelli, the world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, was called “Hip with a wink” by Town & Country, “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times and “the genial genius of the guitar” by The Toronto Star. When he performs with his wife, singer/actress Jessica Molaskey, and his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, they were la-beled “the First Family of Cool” by the San Francisco Chronicle and “the von Trapps on Martinis” by The New Yor-kerAccording to The New York Times, “the Pizzarelli-Molaskey duo are as good as it gets in any entertainment medium.”

After his recent smash success with the Boston Pops, he was hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-pop-ularizing jazz.” And the Seattle Times called him “a tour de force” and “a rare entertainer of the old school.” Before a recent show in the northwest, the local paper quipped “John Pizzarelli is so impossibly cool, he shouldn’t be legally allowed to enter Oregon.”

Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James

Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Len-non & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established him-self as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing.

“Everything I’m singing now is a reflec-tion of my truest self,” says Jane Mon-heit. “After all this time in the industry, after touring for 13 years, it’s time to just be me, with complete and utter freedom.”

Monheit’s sense of liberation is appar-ent throughout The Heart Of The Mat-ter, the acclaimed, Grammy-nominat-ed vocalist’s ninth studio album. It can be felt in her wide- ranging choice of material, in the unique arrangements, and in her own fearless performances and interpretations. The diverse and very personal set of songs includes both familiar standards and composi-tions by Lennon/McCartney, Randy Newman, two songs by Ivan Lins, re-corded in the original Portuguese, and, for the first time, a Monheit original. n

When it comes to singer & saxophonist Grace Kelly, people seem to be divided into two groups: those who marvel at her proficiency & those who have yet to encounter the 21-year-old wunderkind. Trumpeter and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis was so impressed with Kelly’s three-night stand as guest of the JALC Orchestra that he invited her to join the ensemble at the Kennedy Center’s for Barack Obama’s Inauguration Celebration. MONTY ALEXANDER

In a career spanning five decades, pia-nist Monty Alexander has built a repu-tation exploring the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe: Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rol-lins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Sly Dun-bar, and Robbie Shakespeare, among many others.

Born on D-Day (June 6, 1944) and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, he took his first piano lessons at age six but was largely self-taught. As a teenager, he witnessed concerts by Louis Armstrong and Nat “King” Cole at Kingston’s Carib Theater. He formed Monty and the Cyclones in the late 60s and also recorded on sessions with musicians who would later form The Skatalites.

Page 10: Blue Note January 2014

Alexander and his family came to the United States at the end of 1961. Less than two years later, while playing in Las Vegas with Art Mooney’s orchestra, he caught the eye of New York City club owner Jilly Rizzo and his friend, Frank Sinatra. Rizzo hired the young pianist to work in his club, Jilly’s, where he ac-companied Sinatra and others.

His musical collaborations span mul-tiple genres and styles. His projects have been as varied as assisting Natalie Cole in her tribute album to her father, Nat “King” Cole in 1991 (that album, Unforgettable, won seven Grammy awards), performing George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” under the direction of Bobby McFerrin at the Verbier Fes-tival in Switzerland, and recording the piano track for the film score of Clint Eastwood’s Bird, a movie about the life of jazz titan Charlie Parker.

CATERINA ZAPPONIVocalist Caterina Zapponi has explored music ranging from jazz and the Ameri-can popular song to cabaret and musi-cal theater.

Born and raised in Rome, Caterina is the daughter of celebrated screenwriter Bernardino Zapponi, a collaborator and longtime friend of Federico Fellini. Her mother was a French born chanteuse and instilled a love of the French reper-toire. The film High Society introduced her to jazz, fueling a desire to move to the USA, which she did upon receiving a scholarship from Berklee College of Music.

Zapponi was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competi-tion and has since performed at presti-gious venues throught NYC (Blue Note, Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center). She has also performed internationally with her husband, pianist Monty Alexander, at Ronnie Scott’s, Marseille Jazz Festi-val, New Morning, Theatre des Champs Elysees, Blue Note Tokyo, Cotton Club, Cully and Bern Festivals, and Moscow International House of Music.

Her recordings include the album Universal Love Songs (Inak Music) and the forthcom-ing Amorosa (Motema Music).

BUCKY PIZZARELLI & FRANK VIGNOLALegendary 7-string Jazz guitarist Bucky Piz-zarelli’s career spans seven decades, hav-ing worked with some of the biggest names in music - Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Ste-phane Grappelli, and numerous others. Gui-tar legend Les Paul named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar.”

HARLEM-KINGSTON EXPRESSThe Harlem-Kingston Express project com-bines two groups into one, seamlessly blending rocking reggae music with classic, acoustic jazz. It features Monty Alexander (piano), Hassan Shakur (bass), Obed Cal-vaire (drums), Karl Wright (Jamaican drums), Joshua Thomas (Reggae electric bass), Andy Bassford (guitar).

TRIO WITH JOHN CLAYTON & JEFF HAMILTONThis combination of Monty Alexander, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton is one of the most legendary trios in jazz. They have worked together for over 40 years and have released many albums, the most famous being Live In Montreux, one of the most celebrated jazz piano trio records of all-time.

ERNEST RANGLIN & CHRONIXXGuitarist Ernest Ranglin’s sound defines the Jamaican sound for a generation of musi-cians. He has worked with Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, The Skatalites, and numerous other legendary reggae musicians. Called “Ja-maica’s Hottest New-School Reggae Artist” by NPR and “Reggae’s Next Big Thing” by Billboard, Chronixx is truly the new prince of Reggae music.

With Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, his OKeh debut and first recording as a leader since 2000, tenor/alto/so-prano saxophonist Craig Handy pres-ents his initial encounter with an or-gan ensemble. Available January 21, 2014, the album, which consists of 10 numbers from the songbook of Jimmy Smith - the founder of modern jazz or-gan expression - grew out of Handy’s realization several years ago that his distinguished resume included no op-portunities “to cut my teeth with any of the great organ players.” Handy’s rein-terpretation of Smiths’ work includes solos with a creative edge and grooves derived from the tight second-line funk of the Crescent City. In keeping with the jazz tradition re-garding finding a fresh working group, Handy recruited soul jazz specialists Kyle Koehler on Hammond B-3 and Matt Chertkoff on guitar (both New Jersey neighbors and members of his working band), sousaphone virtuoso Clark Gayton, and well known New Or-leans drummers Jason Marsalis, Herlin Riley and Ali Jackson. Trumpet virtu-oso Wynton Marsalis, singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and blues singer-guitarist Clarence Spady make their trademark appearances on the record as well. In approaching the session, Handy recalls, “I realized that two of Jimmy’s hits—‘The Cat’ and ‘Hi-Heeled Sneak-ers’—used modified second-line rhythms. A light bulb went off in my head. I said, ‘That’s it—we’ll do a Jimmy Smith record in the second-line vein.’ New Orleans is one of the furnaces that jazz comes from, and I saw no need to change my stripes to suit the style.” n

Edison Award winning trumpeter-com-poser-producer-bandleader Christian Scott stands tall among a handful of talented young jazz artists expanding their artistic vision beyond the strict confines of the genre’s tradition. Scott has been an intrepid explorer, from his Grammy-nominated debut Rewind That to his genre stretching album Yesterday You Said Tomorrow. Scott ups the ante on his new double album, Christian aTunde Adjuah, an inspired and provocative two-CD, 23-track col-lection that spans a range of beyond-jazz influences as he continues to make strides into uncharted territory.

With Scott’s trumpet at the heart of most of the tunes, the album features reflective ballads, light and dreamy soundscapes, guitar-edged and rock-inflected cookers, trumpet ecstasies as well as clarion calls and anguished wails. Scott’s band consists of guitar-ist Matthew Stevens, drummer Jamire Williams, bassist Kristopher Keith Funn and pianist Lawrence Fields (Fields’ piano sound is often spiced for effect by using paper on the instrument’s strings), with guests including tenor saxophonist Kenneth Whalum III, alto saxophonist Louis Fouche IIII and trombonist Corey King.

In the liner notes to Christian aTunde Ad-juah, addressed as a “Letter to a Future Artist,” the New Orleans-born, Harlem-based Scott writes, “As an artist, I am al-ways attempting to do things that haven’t been done. This goes beyond simply try-ing to be adept at something. It requires the ability to revisit past thought process-es while considering new landscapes…” In conversation, he adds, “It’s all about the willingness to forge new paths and seek new terrain while excavating one’s own past as a means of gaining a better contextual understanding of that path.”

Scott describes what he plays on Chris-tian aTunde Adjuah as “stretch music,” much like he introduced on his 2010 al-bum, Yesterday You Said Tomorrow. In his liners, he writes about people calling his approach “stretch,” and notes, “It’s true that we are attempting to stretch—not replace—jazz’s rhythmic, melodic and harmonic conventions to encompass as many musical forms/languages/cultures as we can. My core belief is that no form of expression is more valid than any other. This belief has compelled me to attempt to create a sound that is genre blind in its acculturation of other musical forms, languages, textures, conventions and processes.” n

This classically trained crooner deftly combines streams of jazz, hip-hop, funk, and soul in his music; he’s as comfortable with falsetto and scatting as he is with laying down smooth and creative phrasings. Growing up in Oak-land, Chris Turner knew at the age of four that he wanted to be a singer just like his father. Chris graduated from the New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Brooklyn guitarist Greg Diamond has been an emerging force in recent years and is now situated at the forefront of a new generation of contemporary latin jazz artists in New York City. Endowed with technical prowess and, above all, an impassioned distinguishable sound characterized by his mixed Latin Amer-ican origins, Diamond puts forth an at-tractive and innovative concept of latin fusion in a modern jazz context. Greg and his band have performed at The Blue Note, Iridium Jazz Club, Joe’s Pub, Smalls Jazz Club, Nublu, and Zinc Bar, The Madrid International Jazz Festival, Barranquijazz Festival, Jimmy Glass Jazz Festival, Teatro Libre Jazz Festival, Jazz al Parque Festival, and the Nublu Jazz Festival. In 2007 he was a semi-finalist at The Gibson Interna-tional Jazz Guitar Competition hosted by The Montreux Jazz Festival in Swit-zerland. Diamond has shared the stage with Seamus Blake, Henry Cole, An-tonio Hart, Jon Benitez, Stacy Dillard, Emilio Solla, Michael Mossman, Don Friedman, and Gretchen Parlato.

MARIA MENDES Maria Mendes’ sold out performances in Switzerland, Brazil, Portugal and Holland have been drawing the atten-

tion of the jazz media worldwide and have gotten great reviews considering her to be one of the most promising singers in the European Jazz scene. The Portuguese vocalist is remarkable for her crystal clear voice, creative and exciting phrasing and outstanding vo-cal virtuosity. Her unique vocal abilities have been praised internationally by jazz critics and jazz musicians, award-ing her with significant international jazz vocal prizes. Her culturally rich background has sup-plied her with the richness of the clas-sical music, the Bossa Nova’s gentle grooves and the American jazz classics of the early 50s. Born in Porto (Portugal) and living in Rotterdam (Netherlands) since 2007, it was during her master thesis at Rot-terdam’s Codarts university that Ma-ria sought to explore her passion for Jazz and discover her connection with the Bossa Nova. These studies have given her the perfect conditions for the achievement on her uniqueness in style. This is probably what led the in-ternational press to classify the sound of Maria Mendes’s debut album as an “Exotic jazz with a Portuguese nostal-gia”. n

Maceo Parker: his name is synony-mous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth. Everyone knows by now that he’s played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as “ like be-ing at University “; jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; stretching out with Bootsy’s Rubber Band. He’s the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of Funk in one golden thread. The cipher that unravels dance music down to its core. “Everything’s coming up Maceo,” con-cluded DownBeat Magazine in a 1991 article at the beginning of Maceo Park-er’s solo career. At the time Maceo was remembered by aficionados of funk

music as sideman; appreciated mainly by those in the know. More than a de-cade and a half later Maceo Parker has been enjoying a blistering solo career. For the past sixteen years Maceo has been building a new funk empire, fresh and stylistically diverse. He navigates deftly between James Brown’s 1960’s soul and George Clinton’s 1970’s freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. His collaborations over the years per-forming or recording or both have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Mat-thews Band and the Red Hot Chilli Pep-pers. His timeless sound has garnered him a fresh young fan base. n

EMEFE has one intention: to play mu-sic that frees the audience, everybody listening at home, and everybody in the band. The group plays its own mix of afrobeat music as created by the late Fela Kuti, mixed with the funk of Sly Stone as well as jazz and hip hop influences. In the same way that Fela used this music as an escape from and confrontation against the Nigerian authorities, EMEFE uses its music to fight the inner authorities that we put

on ourselves, each for our own specific reasons. With the EMEFE sound, which consists of a drummer, a bassist, two guitarists, two percussionists, a key-boardist, and a four-piece horn section, the band hopes to spread awareness of the healing power of music, dancing, and smiling. n
