Born and raised in Harlem, Vivian Ses-soms learned the wonder of music at a young age. Surrounded by nightclubs, churches and regular jam sessions at her family’s home, she was already singing by the time she could talk.

Vivian has since performed, either live or in the studio, with an amazing array of artists including P. Diddy, Michael Jack-son, Donna Summer, Sinead O Connor, and Stevie Wonder. She did a stint with Virgin Music Publishing and then signed on as an artist and staffwriter with K.G. of Naughty By Nature, though an album

was never released. She even went on to write and perform as a guest artist on a number of Sakamoto’s later releases, but unlike with Sakamoto, none of these situations would touch her the way fu-ture partner Chris Parks, with whom she now works, would. n

Following its triumphant partnership with pianist Kenny Werner (Institute of Higher Learning), the award-winning Brussels Jazz Orchestra turns its attention to Joe Lovano, long heralded as a towering soloist among tenor saxophonists. Wild Beauty illuminates the composer side of Lovano’s musicianship, featuring a palette of earthy tunes previously recorded with small groups, but now re-imagined for the 17-piece BJO. Gil Goldstein wrote the evocative arrangements.

ALBARE is the nom de guerre of Albert Dadon, a virtuoso jazz guitarist with a strong melodic sense and a wealth of global influences. Born in Morocco and raised in Israel and France, Albare first worked as a musician in Paris, before immigrating to Australia at the age of 27. He is not only well known as a jazz musician but has maintained a highly successful career as one of Austra-lia’s most prominent businessmen. He is undoubtedly a major force in Aus-tralian jazz, having directed the Mel-bourne Jazz Festival for many years and as chairman of the Australian Jazz Awards. In 2008 he received the Order of Australia for his service to the arts. He currently lives in Melbourne but travels constantly.

In 2011 Albare recorded and released Long Way, Albare’s first album for the prestigious German jazz label Enja Re-cords. Recorded in Brooklyn at Sys-tems Sound, the album features triple GRAMMY® winner drummer Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny Group), saxo-phonist George Garzone (the Joe Lova-no Nonet), pianist Leo Genovese (Es-peranza Spalding), prolific harmonica

player Hendrik Meurkens and Albare’s long time musical collaborator, bassist and composer, Evri (Evripedes Evripi-dou.) Albare calls this super group iTD, or the International Travel Diary, reflecting their global backgrounds. In the fall and winter of 2012 Albare iTD toured the United States with stops in New York, Boston, Miami, Cleveland and Washington DC. During this time Long Way maintained its place on the national Jazz Week Chart for over twelve weeks!

In early 2013 Albare went back into the same Brooklyn studio to record The Road Ahead with his new band, the Freeworld Jazz Project. This ensem-ble has proved to be a great setting for Albare’s melodic playing while con-tinuing the international cosmopolitan theme. The band features pianist Phil Turcio (also one of Australia’s premier pop record producers), Cuban bassist Yunior Terry and Venezuelan drummer Pablo Bencid. They combine the fresh excitement of Long Way with a more sophisticated and interactive feeling within the band. n

In the early 1940s, Afro-Cuban jazz first emerged when Cuban musicians Frank “Machito” Grillo and Mario Bauzá formed Machito & His Afro-Cubans. Several years later, in 1947, Bauzá introduced Dizzy Gillespie to Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo, further de-veloping Afro-Cuban jazz. Early combi-nations of jazz with Cuban music, such as Gillespie’s and Pozo’s “Manteca” and Charlie Parker’s and Machito’s “Mangó Mangüé”, were commonly re-ferred to as “Cubop,” short for Cuban

bebop. Gillespie loved the substyle so much that in 1975, he invited Machito and Machito’s son, Mario Grillo (aka Machito, Jr.), to join his band for the re-cording of Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods. In 2014, almost 40 years later, Machito, Jr. reunites with the Gillespie legacy, joining The Dizzy Gillespie™ Afro Cu-ban Experience (under the direction of John Lee, Gillespie’s longtime bassist and leader of the various Dizzy Gil-lespie bands, including The Dizzy Gil-lespie™ Big Band and Quintet). n

In the Summer of 2011 at the Black Sea Jazz Festival, piano prodigy Beka Gochiashvili met with an innovative turntablist and kindred spirit, Bronx-native Jason Kibler a.k.a. DJ Logic and his band members at Batumi, Geor-gia’s Club Take Five. During jam ses-sions in the club, a musical chemistry quickly developed between them and they decided to form this band. In ad-dition to Beka (now just 18 years old) and DJ Logic, the band features re-nowned electric bassist Victor Bailey with vocalist Butterscotch, adventur-ous keyboardist James Hurt, alto sax-ophonist Jaleel Shaw, and drummer

Justin Tyson. Beka, Logic and friends perform in support of their debut al-bum, Chillin’ in Batumi (released in September 2013).

“This crew of young virtuosos is brim-ming with the kind of energy and ideas that bring the music to a new, exhila-rating place”, says renowned critic Bill Milkowski about the band Beka & Logic Project and adds few words re-garding band’s main leader, a 18 year old pianist Beka Gochiashvili: “If Bud Powell had lived long enough to play a Mini-Moog, it might sound something like this.” n

ANDRÉ PREVINConductor, composer and pianist An-dré Previn has received a number of awards and honors for his outstanding musical accomplishments, including both the Austrian and German Cross of Merit, and the Glenn Gould Prize. He is the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Kennedy Center, the London Symphony Orchestra, Gramo-phone Classic FM, and this year was honored with a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award from The Record-ing Academy. He has also received several GRAMMY® awards for record-ings, including the CD of his violin con-certo “Anne-Sophie” and Bernstein’s Serenade featuring Anne-Sophie Mut-ter together with the Boston and Lon-don Symphony orchestras.

A regular guest with the world’s ma-jor orchestras, both in concert and on recordings, André Previn frequently works with the Boston Symphony Or-chestra, New York Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic. In addition, he has held chief artistic posts with such orchestras as the Houston Symphony, London Symphony, Los Angeles Phil-harmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony and Royal Philharmonic orchestras. In 2009,

André Previn was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the NHK Sym-phony Orchestra. For his 80th birthday celebrations in 2009, Carnegie Hall presented four concerts which showcased the diver-sity of his career.

CHRISTIAN McBRIDEBassist extraordinaire, composer, ar-ranger, educator, curator and three-time GRAMMY® Award winner, Chris-tian McBride, has been one of the most important and omnipresent fig-ures in jazz for 20 years.

Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, Bobby Wat-son. Since then, McBride’s list of ac-complishments has been nothing short of staggering. He has worked with the best of the best in the jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and neo-soul worlds. McBride currently leads several bands that fully embrace the straight ahead acoustic jazz tradition, including his Inside Straight quintet, Big Band, and Trio (each having recorded for Mack Avenue Records). n

New York City’s original hip-hop en-semble Mental Notes has been attract-ing diverse audiences with its sound and vibrations since 1999. The group’s eclectic fusion of old school hip-hop, funk, electronica, jazz, and acid rock continues to break the boundaries of the New York live music scene.

Lead vocalist and emcee Spiritchild has produced several film scores and spoken word albums for Nuyorican Slam Champions Ainsley Burrows and SmokiFantastic and has released mul-tiple solo albums, including A Tribute

to Nina Simone (2001), Eclipse of Hope (2005), and Dark Matters (2010). To-gether, he and the other members of Mental Notes create an intense listen-ing experience that rivals any sound to come out of the NYC hip-hop scene in recent memory. n

ERIC ALEXANDER Eric Alexander started piano lessons at the age of six. He took up the clarinet at nine and switched to alto sax three years later. The tenor sax became his obsession at Indiana University Bloom-ington (1986-87). After transferring to William Paterson College in New Jer-sey he studied with Harold Mabern, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, and others.

In 1991 Eric competed against Joshua Redman and Chris Potter in the The-lonious Monk International Jazz Saxo-phone Competition. Placing second, this launched him into the whirlwind life of a professional jazz musician. He played with organ trios on Chicago’s South Side, made his recording debut with Charles Earland (Muse Records, 1991), and cut his first album as a lead-er, Straight Up (Delmark, 1991).

Eric has appeared on record as a lead-er, sideman, producer, and composer. By now, he has lost count of how many albums feature his playing; he guesses 60 or 70. He has earned praise from critics and, even more important, es-tablished his own voice within the be-bop tradition.

HAROLD MABERN Harold Mabern, one of jazz’s most en-during and dazzlingly skilled pianists, was born in Memphis, a city that pro-duced saxophonists George Coleman and Charles Lloyd, pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. and trumpeter Booker Little. He was an unsung hero of the 1960s hardbop scene, performing and recording with many of its finest artists, and only in recent years has he begun to garner appreciation for his long-run-ning legacy in jazz and the understated power of his talent; as critic Gary Gid-dins has written, “With the wind at his back, he can sound like an ocean roar.”

During his over half-century on the scene as sideman and leader, he has played and recorded with such greats as Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, just to name a few. “I was never concerned with being a leader, I just al-ways wanted to be the best sideman I could be. Be in the background so you can shine through.” n

Page 15: Blue Note Jun 2014

By the late 1970s, trailblazing key-boardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber had become a prominent fig-ure in the new movement known as jazz fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. Lorber and his band, the Jeff Lorber Fusion, first honed their craft in the Portland, Oregon, club scene and rapidly ex-panded their reach to a national and international audience via a combina-tion of complex harmonies, unconven-tional time signatures and compelling rhythms.

In subsequent years, Lorber dropped the term “fusion” from his billing as the movement evolved into what is cur-rently known as contemporary jazz. Still, he continued to explore the in-novative, improvisational potential of grafting other musical forms to the jazz idiom.

Lorber’s music reaches a new level by crystallizing jazz, funk, and Latin rhythms with some killer melodies that will certainly translate to live perfor-mance. Obviously, time spent touring together has made Lorber, Haslip and Marienthal into a tight unit, which is evident from this latest recording.

After college, he relocated to Port-land, Oregon, where he formed the Jeff Lorber Fusion. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1977, and quickly became one of the most popu-lar acts in the jazz fusion scene, due in large part to relentless touring and a string of artistically daring and com-mercially successful recordings.

The entity formerly known as the Jeff Lorber Fusion became Lorber’s solo career with the release of It’s a Fact in 1982. After a brief but prolific stretch culminating with the highly successful Private Passion in 1986, Lorber took a break from recording his own material, opting instead to do session work and produce other artists. He resumed his solo career in 1991 with Worth Waiting For, although he continued to produce for the remainder of the decade.

Lorber has been just as prolific and in-novative in the new century as he was in the last, with recordings on Narada (Philly Style, Flip Side), Blue Note Re-cords (He Had a Hat) and Peak (Heard That). n

LOU DONALDSON Lou Donaldson is very honored to be performing at Blue Note Jazz Club with his world class quartet, with whom he has been touring the world playing festivals and clubs for the past two de-cades.

Awarded an NEA Jazz Masters fel-lowship in 2013, Donaldson has been termed a “truly unique and absolutely indispensable creative voice in mod-ern jazz whose greatness stretches from being one of sublime virtuosos of swinging bebop and hard bop to being the creator of his own genre of funky jazz boogaloo that has profoundly in-fluenced contemporary American mu-sic in many ways for several decades.”

Donaldson played an absolutely invalu-able role in the creation and building of the classic Blue Note Records label, and the assembly and musical devel-opment of the the classic Jazz Mes-sengers bands that originally featured

Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Horace Sil-ver, Gene Ramey, Hank Mobley, and many other of the greatest creative vir-tuosos of the this entire era of modern jazz expression.

DR. LONNIE SMITH Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician, composer, performer and recording artist. An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, he has been featured on over seventy albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B giants in the in-dustry. Consequently, he has often been hailed as a “Legend,” a “Living Musical Icon,” and as the most cre-ative jazz organist by a slew of music publications. JazzTimes describes him as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban!” Always ahead of the curve, it is no surprise Dr. Smith’s fan-base is truly worldwide. n

After his classic acoustic albums in the 1960s, the change that was in the air during the 70s enticed Ramsey Lewis toward the electric realm. With this new sound, he collaborated with the enigmatic and iconic, Earth, Wind & Fire. Sun Goddess, the result of this creative summit, is an album with sleek grooves and gorgeous melodies that continues to flow with the uplifting and positive vibes of that time. The album reached across the musical rainbow and, rightfully so, it became a huge cross-over hit; charting #1 on the Bill-board Black Albums chart as well as the Jazz album chart and it charted #12 in the Pop chart. The songs “Hot Dawgit” and “Sun Goddess” charted in

the Black Singles, the Pop Singles, and the Disco singles charts. Sun Goddess has since been certified gold.

Philip Bailey is an R&B, soul, gospel and funk singer, songwriter, percussionist and longtime member of Earth, Wind & Fire. Bailey has won seven GRAMMY® Awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and also the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Philip appears as a special guest vocalist and percussionist with the Ramsey Lewis Electric Band, performing the jazz and R&B classics which grew out of the two performers’ legendary careers. n

A streetwise New York City native born and raised in Washington Heights, Lakecia Benjamin has become one of the most highly sought-after players in soul and funk music. Charismatic and dynamic as both a saxophonist and bandleader, she has worked with Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots, Macy Gray, and more. She has performed on four continents, and her extensive recording credits include saxophone and arrangements for Santigold, Mau-rice Brown, the Clark Terry Big Band, Krystle Warren, and Talib Kweli, among others.

After being so in demand as a collabora-tor, Benjamin has recently taken center

Drawn from all experiences, adult and childhood, St. Louis native Jeremy “Bean” Clemons and Bull City’s fin-est Mavis “Swan” Poole have created “Soul Understated.” The project serves as a musical “mother ship.” The influ-ences on their music are overwhelming and pleasurable all at once. Grabbing elements from all styles of music and bridging them under one roof is not an easy task but they have a strong grip on it.

Performing together for three years, Soul Understated was created to bring together an eclectic mix of musical forc-es to form a powerhouse band as well as a unique concept of music. This con-

cept allows each angle of the band to be independent yet part of a total musical thought. Having similar musical back-grounds and deriving elements from gospel, R&B, and popular music, BEAN and SWAN’s compositions clearly state where they have been while simultane-ously suggesting what may lay ahead. Their energy as composers, bandlead-ers, and performers will only make you want to know and grow with them in every way. Soul Understated is proven to be a true reflection of like-minded in-dividuals who share common goals and desires in life and music. n

Allan Harris is a world-class singer, gui-tarist and songwriter. He is unquestion-ably one of the most versatile talents in contemporary jazz and blues music. “Harris is a velvet-voiced jazz singer, with a savvy manner and music in his veins.” (Variety)

Tony Bennett has called Allan “my fa-vorite singer” and The New York Times’ Stephen Holden raves about “the prote-an talent that is Allan Harris.” Allan has cultivated a global following, playing for packed audiences and receiving out-standing reviews throughout the Unit-ed States, Europe, Russia and the Far East. A three-time winner of the New York Nightlife Award for “Outstanding

JOE LOVANO’S VILLAGE RHYTHMS BAND

After a twenty two year absence from recording Andy Bey returned with four albums that have become a perma-nent part of the musical landscape. His 2005 GRAMMY® Nominated American Song, is a celebration of one of Ameri-ca’s great gifts to the music world: The American Songbook. Given his limited output of studio recordings, live per-formances were the source of Bey’s reputation. Aretha Franklin reminisces about the nights when Andy and The Bey Sisters worked the Village in NY, “Soon as I finished my gig I’d run over

to hear them. Andy never got the rec-ognition he deserved . . . jazz originals . . . brilliant and precious.” That footage of Andy Bey and his sisters delighting a crowd of Parisian partygoers in the Chet Baker documentary Let’s Get Lost, gives us a clue of the years of bril-liance that were never recorded.

At 73, Andy Bey is one of the last major performers with a personal connec-tion to the era. As People magazine confirmed, “American song has met an American Master.”

During the last five decades Bey’s en-gaging four octave baritone voice has taken on the character of an instru-ment. Since the acclaim surrounding the release of Ballads, Blues and Bey in 1996, much attention has been paid to the fact that Bey did not record as a leader for over two decades. His ab-sence was, as Newsday put it, “like having Ella Fitzgerald take a vow of si-lence.” Frank Wess says, “What’s spe-cial about Andy Bey is that he knows how to tell the story.” Al Pryor in Jazziz wrote that Bey “reminds us of how emotionally powerful the great Ameri-can song can be.” Bey’s four albums since his reemergence have become legend.

Andy Bey has been hailed as a cultural phenomenon and applauded by the tastemakers of contemporary music. From Pharrell Williams, Jimmy Scott, Avery Brooks, Jamie Cullum, & Mos Def, Andy Bey has become an icon for the next generation who attend his per-formances for the enlightenment of a true Master.

Bey’s recent album, The World Ac-cording To Andy Bey, was released on HighNote Records in June of 2013. The project recieved a GRAMMY®

nomination. n

GRAMMY® award winner Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dy-namic musicians of our time. Whether leading his own ensembles or touring with renowned jazz masters (Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy), Danilo is making a decidedly fresh im-print on contemporary music, guided, as always, by his love for jazz.

He has led his own groups since the early ‘90s, and as bandleader has earned three GRAMMY® nominations for his ebullient and innovative record-ings. Motherland, was nominated for two GRAMMY®Awards for “Best Latin Jazz Album,” and also garnered his third win for “Best Jazz Album” from the prestigious Boston Music Awards. Motherland was named (as were his previous four releases) among the best albums of the year by such publica-tions as the New York Times, Los An-geles Times, Chicago Tribune, San Di-ego Tribune, Billboard and JazzTimes. In 2002, he received a nomination from the Jazz Journalists Association for “Pianist of the Year.” Currently, Perez serves as UNESCO Artist For Peace, Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, and Artistic Director of the Panama Jazz Festival . In previous years, he served as Goodwill Ambas-sador to UNICEF and Cultural Ambas-

sador to the Republic of Panama.

As a performer, bassist John Patitucci has played throughout the world with his own band, and with jazz luminaries Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, Hubert Laws, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams, and scores of others. Some of the many pop and Brazilian artists he has played with include Sting, Aaron Neville, Natalie Cole, Carole King, Milton Nascimien-to, Astrud and Joao Gilberto, Airto and Flora Purim, Ivan Lins, Joao Bosco and Dori Caymmi.

Drummer Brian Blade – who also leads a singer-songwriter project called Mama Rosa – is as comfortable composing word-songs and propel-ling and entexturing the flow for mas-ters of that art like Joni Mitchell, Dan-iel Lanois, Emmylou Harris and Bob Dylan, as personalizing the complex codes of jazz drumming with the likes of Kenny Garrett, Ellis Marsalis, Josh-ua Redman, Bill Frisell, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and, for the last 13 years, Wayne Shorter’s extraordinary quartet. n

DownBeat Critic’s Poll winner Marcus Strickland has steadily proven to be an essential part of the jazz continuum since he stepped on the scene in the early 2000s. He will present his Twi-Life group at The 2013 NYC Winter JazzFest; a highly anticipated annual event which showcases over seventy new and established groups in tandem with the Arts Presenters (APAP) confer-ence. Twi-Life, an electric band with its inception rooted in the soul music Strickland grew up listening to, is a tes-tament to his irrepressible versatility. “It seems, so far, that every Twi-Life band will be significantly different than the

next because it is my refuge for trying out my wildest ideas,” says Strickland, who is emerging as one of the most multi-faceted and prolific writers and performers of his generation. n

With his passion, energy and diverse musical persona, Vladimir Cetkar’s hall-mark is his ability to seamlessly com-bine his many talents as a guitarist, vocalist, arranger, composer and pro-ducer of the highest order.

The evident musical influences may transport you back in time to the mu-sical era when bands like Chic and Earth Wind and Fire ruled the musical cosmos. But Vladimir’s new sound, original music expression, and con-temporary production return you to the present, and portend a strong future for this genre of music. Essentially, Vladi-mir Cetkar’s latest release can be de-scribed as his original music cocktail,

incorporating a pristine distillate of the Jazz, Pop, Soul and Disco sounds of the late 70’s and early 80’s, along with a hint of what’s to come.

Critics recognize Cetkar’s unique sound and passion, and have drawn many flat-tering comparisons: George Benson’s guitar playing; Quincy Jones’ and Mauro Malavasi’s arrangement and production acumen; Earth Wind and Fire’s vocals; and Jamiroquai’s grooves. n

On Rhizome, his second leader release, Fabian Almazan picks up where he left off on his acclaimed 2011 debut, Per-sonalities. On that date, the pianist-composer, who had garnered interna-tional visibility for his work with Terence Blanchard since 2007, revealed a tonal personality imbued with, to quote jazz journalist Larry Blumenfeld, “a bracing blend of lyrical Modernism, modern-jazz improvisation and postmodern sonic disruption.”

Joined by trio partners Linda Oh on bass and Henry Cole on drums, and twice bringing a string quartet into the mix, Almazan presented seven originals

that included achingly poetic ballads as well as songs defined by the disjunctive rhythms and highbrow harmony of 21st century jazz, all animated by the lead-er’s virtuoso pianistics. Almazan also acknowledged his Cuban bloodline (he was 9 when his parents migrated from Havana, Cuba, his birthplace, to Miami, Florida, where he came of age) with an idiomatic rendering of the iconic danzon “Tres Lindas Cubanas,” a classically in-flected solo reading of Carlos Varela’s romantic bolero “Bola De Nieve,” and a phantasmagoric, electronically modi-fied treatment of Dmitry Shostakovich’s “String Quartet No. 10, Op. 118.” n

A pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer that flavors his tunes with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Michel Cami-lo’s musical language is an expressive combination of his Dominican Repub-lic musical heritage and a rich, intel-ligent use of jazz harmonies and tex-tures. Camilo composed his first piece at age five then studied at the National Conservatory for thirteen years. At age sixteen, he became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. In 1979, he moved to New York City where he fur-thered his education at Mannes and the Juilliard School of Music. Since his 1985 Carnegie Hall debut and his 1987 composer debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic, Camilo has become a lead-ing figure in jazz in the US, Europe, Ja-pan, and the Caribbean.

Camilo has also become a prominent figure at festivals throughout the world. In 1987, he became the musical direc-tor for the Heineken Jazz Festival in his native Dominican Republic, a post he held through 1992. 1998 saw him become the co-artistic director of the first Latin-Caribbean Music Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. He has also

served as the president of the jury at the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano com-petition. Mr. Camilo’s recordings and compositions have earned him numer-ous awards including Grammy awards, Grammy nominations, and Emmy awards. His compositions have been performed by some of the top jazz and Latin jazz artists on the scene today including Manhattan Transfer and Pa-quito D’Rivera.

As a performer, Camilo as appeared in settings as small as a solo act and as large as a symphony orchestra. He was featured in the award winning Latin jazz documentary film Calle 54 and has re-corded for various film soundtracks. In addition, he has performed with several leading artists in Latin jazz like saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera and gui-tarist Tomatito. Mr. Camilo also has performed with some of the leading symphony orchestras from around the world including the Cleveland Sym-phony, the LA Philharmonic, the afore-mentioned National Symphony Or-chestra of the Dominican Republic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Barcelona Symphony, and the Detroit Symphony (where he served as their “Jazz Cre-ative Director Chair in 2009-2010”). n

The major characteristics of life include birth, growth, movement, awareness, adaptation and death. And ever since she emerged on the scene in 2003, Hiromi has been one of the most pro-found and prolific living forces in 21st century music. Mentored by the leg-endary Ahmad Jamal, the Japanese pi-anist/composer has created music that grows with every performance, moves easily beyond stylistic genres, exhibits an awareness of the entire jazz tradi-tion and adapts to the contributions of her fellow bandmates.

So it’s only apropos that her latest re-cording, set for release on June 17, 2014, via Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, is entitled Alive.

Her ninth CD as a leader, Alive, her-alds the return of Hiromi’s Trio Project, featuring contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Mi-chel Camilo, The O’Jays and Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour and Jack Bruce). This terrific triad, which DownBeat magazine pro-claimed as “one of the most exciting groups working in any genre today,” first formed in 2011 and recorded their first CD, Voice, that year, followed by Move in 2013. On Alive, Phillips’ powerful, yet poetic percussion and Jackson’s flowing, glow-in-the-dark

basslines beautifully buoy and support Hiromi’s ingenious and impassioned improvisations. Her evocative and ex-pansive compositions evoke the myri-ad moods and mysteries of life and re-veal the soulful, syncopated simpatico of her thrilling threesome.

“Alive has a double meaning for me,” Hiromi says. “I wanted to write songs that deal with things and emotions that we encounter in life. But the word Alive can also mean ‘played live.’ I’ve been performing with Simon and An-thony for four years. We’ve made three records together, and we’ve done so many live shows as a trio. We have a great time being adventurous, and I felt that we can make the record sound like a live recording in front of the audience.

That’s the great thing about having a working trio: We understand how to make each other shine. Anthony is an amazing improviser. He composes in-credible counter-lines when I solo, and he always plays something to make [the music] shine even more. And Si-mon has an amazing tone and a beau-tiful sound on the drums; he’s like an orchestra. They can play anything, and they understand so many different genres of music. They have no bound-aries. It’s been a great journey with this group.” n

Few young bassists can claim creden-tials as extensive and diverse as Jer-emiah Hosea. After making his profes-sional debut recording and performing with life-long friend and musical mentor Olu, Jeremiah went on to found the art-ist/activist collective earthdriver. Since the inception of the project, Jeremiah has toured with GRAMMY®-nominated blues/jazz legend James Blood Ulmer, Gigi, Karsh Kale, Moon Boot Lover, and Lily Haydn to name only a few. Jeremi-ah’s approach to sound and his adroit technique paired with his commitment to the ethos of love and political change for society coalesce to make him a sin-gular force to be reckoned with. n

KENNY WERNERWITH THE BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA INSTITUTE OF HIGHER LEARNING

Long regarded as one of Europe’s premier big bands - a group that “manifests love,” ac-cording to Grammy-winning arranger Maria Schneider - The Brussels Jazz Orchestra has joined hands with Kenny Werner to create a winning tableau vivant of spirited writing and performance. The Institute of Higher Learn-ing features a sumptuous 3-part suite, “Can-tabile,” that reinforces in a singular way Wer-ner’s place among forward-thinking jazzmen. Mystical yet fiery, passionately roman-tic yet supremely cool – you hear those first few notes from that instantly rec-ognizable tenor, and know you’re in the unique musical world of Gato Barbieri. His enduring career has covered vir-tually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-’60s, to film scoring and his ultimate embrace of Latin music throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Barbieri began playing tenor saxophone with his own band in the late ’50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Michelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded two albums for Blue Note: Complete Communion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer’s Orches-tra, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chi-co O’Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period.

Barbieri recorded a handful of albums on the Flying Dutchman label in the early ’70s and then signed with the Im-pulse imprint, where he recorded his classic Chapter Series: Latin America (1973), Hasta Siempre (1973), Viva

Emiliano Zapata (1974), and Alive in New York (1975). While at Impulse, he also composed the GRAMMY®-winning score for the film Last Tango in Paris (1972) – an achievement he par-layed into success as a film composer, scoring a dozen international films over the years in Europe, South America, and the U.S. By the mid-’70s, Barbieri’s coarse, wailing tone began to mellow, a change evident on his ’70s A&M re-cordings. However, early ’80s dates like the live Gato … Para Los Amigos (1984) saw the saxophonist reclaim a more intense, rock-influenced South American sound.

After many years of limited musical ac-tivity due to the passing of his first wife Michelle (also his closest musical con-fidant and manager) and his own triple bypass surgery six weeks later, Bar-bieri returned stronger than ever with the 1997 Columbia offering Que Pasa, the fourth-highest-selling contempo-rary jazz album of that year. Since that reemergence, he has continued to re-lease albums, including The Shadow of the Cat (2002), which won Billboard’s prestigious 2003 Latin Jazz Album of the Year award and garnered a GRAM-MY® nomination, and New York Meet-ing (2010), his latest release. n
