Odean Pope grew up in Philadelphia alongside jazz notables such as John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Benny Golson, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Ray Bryant, Bill Barron, Kenny Barron, Archie Shepp, Jymie Merritt, Jimmy Garrison, Philly Joe Jones and Dizzy Gillespie. Col-trane chose Odean to replace him in Jimmy Smith’s Group when he left for New York to join Miles Davis. Although he was close to Coltrane and continues to revere his artistry, Odean was always searching for his own musical sound. This led him to study with Ron Rubin, the prin-cipal woodwind player in the Philadelphia Orchestra.

In 1979, Odean joined the Max Roach Quartet as a regular member for more than two de-cades. It was as the tenor man with Max Roach that Odean perfected the techniques of circular breathing and multi-phonics, both allowing him to stretch his solo improvisations from dazzling elevations to the throbbing, husky sounds for which he is so well known. Odean won acclaim from Aus-tralia to Japan, even winning “Best Tenor Saxophone Play-er” at the North Sea Jazz Fes-tival.

Odean has led two musical lives. Whereas his musical le-gion left for New York, Odean kept Philadelphia as his home base. Having grown up in North Philadelphia, Odean has always felt a strong commitment to his community through working musically with the children. He was musical director of a Philadelphia cultural initiative, “Mod-

el Cities.” He started the jazz stud-ies program at the Settlement Mu-sic School and he continues to give master classes in the School District of Philadelphia, as well as nationally and internationally. Odean Pope’s artistry as performer, composer and arranger has earned him many cita-tions from the City of Philadelphia. Among his many awards are: The

Pew Fellowship in the Arts for Music Composition (1992), The Rockefeller Foundation (1992) and several from Chamber Music America. n

“It’s time to gear up again,” says Joe Sample, the brilliant keyboardist who, nearly a half-century after the birth of The Crusaders, is leading the charge for the group’s renewal. “It’s time to revisit and revitalize the tradition that gave us purpose and identity. We’re looking back to our beginnings for our strength—back to that healing feeling when the music first got all over us.” In 1961, four fellows from Houston transplanted themselves to Los An-geles and added more distinctly bluesy elements to the soul jazz style with an ear-grabbing album called The Freedom Sound on the Pacific Jazz label. The band, which had been known in turn as the Swingsters, the Modern Jazz Sextet, and the Night-hawks, was now named the Jazz Crusaders. Its four co-leaders were trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxophonist (and occasional bassist) Wilton Felder, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Nesbert “Stix” Hooper. The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacif-ic Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces,

the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical back-ground for a Ford Mustang TV com-mercial. But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they de-cided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements. If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such al-bums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (record-ed variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979. n

Big Daddy Kane is a Brooklyn, New York M.C. who undisputedly de-fined the term “lyricist” in the world of hip-hop. Along with the lyrical ingenuity he brought to the genre, he also introduced innovative live performances. Kane was the first rapper to ever hold not one but two sold out shows at the world famous Apollo Theater for women only. These lives performances, which consisted of theatrics, choreog-raphy and tailored costumes proved that Big Daddy Kane was not only an M.C., he was a full enter-tainer. Kane revo-lutionized hip-hop fashion and the way hip-hop shows were performed.

Kane has endured a substantive music career. He has several gold albums, endless music accolades including a Grammy award. He also received a VH1 Hip Hop Honor in 2005. His catalogue of music consists of the LP Long Live The Kane featuring the hit songs “Ain’t No Half Steppin’” and “Raw.” The LP It’s A Big Daddy Thing featured “Smooth Operator,” “Warm It Up,” and the Teddy Riley produced hit “I Get The Job Done.” The LP Taste Of Chocolate features “Hard Being The Kane,” and “All Of Me,” as well as a duet with the leg-endary Barry White.

Additional albums were Prince Of Darkness, Looks Like A Job For… and Daddy’s Home. Kane has also recorded on movie soundtracks with “Lean On Me (Rap Summary)” from

the film Lean On Me. “Nuff Respect” from the film Juice, The Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis produced “A Job Ain’t Nothin’ But Work” from Mo’ Money and of course “Raw” from the film Colors.

As a powerful figure in the rap game, Kane has collaborated with many artists such as Kool G Rap, Mas-ta Ace and Craig G on the Marley Marl produced “Symphany.” He has worked with Public Enemy and Ice Cube on the single “Burn, Hollywood Burn” with Heavy D on the single “Don’t Curse” with Patti LaBelle on the certified gold single “Feels Like Another One” and the Quincy Jones multi-platinum masterpiece “Tribute To Birdland” as well as the title cut “Back On The Block” from the album of the same name. n

Juan de Marcos González is one of the most important figures in Cu-ban music today. He has a mission to show the world the wealth, diver-sity and vitality of Cuban music. His work with the Afro-Cuban All Stars, the Buena Vista Social Club, Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer, Sierra Mae-stra and others has made an extraor-dinary contribution to raising the pro-file of Cuban music throughout the world. However, neither his name nor his crucial contribution is well known to the general public and he remains something of an unsung hero of Cu-ban music. González was born in Havana in 1954 and grew up surrounded by music (his father was a singer and played with Arsenio Rodríguez amongst oth-ers). While at university he co-found-ed the group Sierra Maestra in 1978. Styled as a traditional Cuban septeto group (three, trumpets, bass, percus-sion and vocals), the dynamic young band’s aim was to bring about an ap-preciation of Cuban son by the youth of the island. The band achieved great success, recording fourteen albums in Cuba, touring Africa and Europe and receiving various awards.

González had long harboured a dream to put together a band combining the old masters and the new generation of Cuban musicians. In 1997 two re-cords were planned to be recorded at Havana’s EGREM studios: the debut from the All Stars and a collaboration between West African and Eastern Cuban musicians for which Ry Cooder was invited as producer. The All Stars album was the first to be recorded and González’s band pro-vided both the springboard and many of the musicians for the Buena Vista album that followed. The day after the All Stars album was completed Ry Cooder arrived in Havana to be greet-ed by this ensemble for the start of what was to become the Buena Vista Social Club. González acted as con-sultant, coordinator and conductor during the sessions. Following the album’s release Juan de Marcos González led the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Rubén González on their debut European and U.S. tours and di-rected the only ever two Buena Vista Social Club concerts in Amsterdam and New York’s Carnegie Hall. n

Triple-Grammy nominated artists Acoustic Alchemy are fast approach-ing their quarter century of recording since 1987’s Red Dust and Spanish Lace established the ensemble as an ever evolving force in contemporary jazz. The group has assembled a vast

and loyal following that stretches well beyond their U.K. origins.

The band’s story begins with two gui-tarists, Nick Webb and Simon James, who recorded a self-financed, self-produced album in the mid 1980s entitled Acoustic Alchemy. Shortly after the release, James left the part-nership to study flamenco guitar in Spain, leaving Webb to promote the record on his own.

Webb turned to a rock guitarist named Greg Carmichael, whose background complemented his own – Webb had studied jazz at Leeds Col-lege of Music, while Carmichael had studied classical at London College of Music – and the two assumed the name of Acoustic Alchemy.

The road to instrumental stardom began when Webb and Carmichael provided the one-off-in-flight enter-tainment for a Virgin Airlines England to America flight, in search of an elu-sive recording contract; they often liked to say they “played their way to

America”. Signed to the MCA Master Series label by Tony Brown, their pop-ularity took off in conjunc-tion with the rise of the New Adult Contemporary radio format. Acoustic Alchemy’s latest album, Roseland was re-leased in 2011. Carmichael explains that the spirited feeling of Roseland is the result of a natural chem-istry he’s developed with Miles Gilderdale over the years. Gilderdale became Carmichael’s full time creative partner after the passing of founding mem-ber Nick Webb in 1998.

“The band has been through a lot of changes over the years, but the con-cept of two acoustic guitars has al-ways been the emotional centerpiece which draws people close,” says Car-michael. “I’m happy these days be-cause I love all the musicians in the band and its great touring with them and playing live onstage. For me, whether we’re jamming or stopping for gas at a truck stop, it’s honestly like being on vacation, and we’re ex-cited to have so many loyal fans who have enjoyed taking the journey with us. The positive spirit behind our mu-sic and album titles comes from the wonderful relationship we have al-ways had with them.” n

Robben Ford is one of the premier electric guitarists today, particularly known for his blues playing as well as his ability to be comfortable in a va-riety of musical contexts. A five-time Grammy nominee, he has played with artists as diverse as Joni Mitch-ell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Har-rison, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, Claus Ogerman, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan, John Mayall, Greg Allman, John Scofield and many others. Ford’s new album Bring-ing It Back Home is a stunning study in soul, style and virtuosity that cuts to the heart with its exceptional, emotion-laden musicianship. The disc also brings the five-time Grammy nominated stage and studio legend back to his earliest roots as a performer, playing blues. The albums all-star line-up features organist Larry Goldings, drummer Harvey Mason, bassist David Piltch and trombonist Steve Baxter. Bringing It Back Home revisits and reshapes the roots of Ford’s first mu-sical love. The guitar kingpin selected 10 tunes from the blues canon, rang-ing from early Delta pioneer Charley Patton’s “Bird’s Nest Bound” to Bob Dylan’s “You Go Your Way and I Go Mine,” and, along with a hand-picked team of A-list players, crafted dynam-ic, new and highly original arrange-ments for each song in the studio. On his interest in jazz, Robben says, ”I fell in love with the sax playing of

Paul Desmond and The Dave Brubeck Quartet, and before long found Or-nette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and of course, Miles

Davis.” These influences have stayed with Robben, playing a large part in his particular blend of jazz and blues that define him as a guitarist and al-low him to play in a wide variety of settings. “This is the album I really wanted to make right now,” Ford relates. “I wanted to apply my perspective to the music that first moved me, get together with a group of great musi-cians and play what we were inspired to play at that moment, without any pressure or expectations. The results are really pure, and the most fun I’ve had making an album in years.” n

Bassist Stanley Clarke teamed up with keyboardist George Duke in 1981 to form the Clarke/Duke Project, scor-ing a Top 20 pop hit with the single “Sweet Baby.” Over the course of their funk-filled and genre-smashing col-laborations, including three albums, the two have created performances full of fun, energy, and exceptional musicianship, with a big bottom and keyboard flights of fancy. In 2012 the new Clarke/Duke 4 toured and performed on the Blue Note Jazz festival. It had been six years since the two were touring together. “We have a good time together,” remarked Clarke. Duke concurred: “Touring with Stan-ley is always a good thing, because he’s a nut. He’s the younger brother I never had.” Multi-Grammy Award-winning bass-ist Stanley Clarke became the first bassist in history who could double on acoustic and electric bass with equal ferocity and the first bass-ist ever to headline tours, selling out shows worldwide. A veteran of over 40 albums, he won the 2011 Best Con-temporary Jazz Album Grammy for his album The Stanley Clarke Band.

Clarke co-founded the seminal fusion group Return to Forever with Chick Corea and Lenny White. Clarke has collaborated with Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Paul McCartney, and Keith Richards, to name a few. An accomplished film and TV composer of over 60 projects, his credits include Boyz n the Hood (1991), the Tina Turn-er biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993), Romeo Must Die (2000), and The Transporter (2002). He has gar-nered three Emmy Nominations and a BMI Award for his scoring. Keyboardist and vocalist George Duke, also a multi-Grammy Award winner, has worked with a who’s who of musical greats, including Cannon-ball Adderley, Anita Baker, Miles Da-vis, Al Jarreau, and Dianne Reeves. One of the foremost keyboard pio-neers, he helped usher in the ’70s fusion revolution with his work with Jean Luc Ponty and Frank Zappa. Through the years, along with his 30 solo projects and busy producing schedule, Duke has acted as musi-cal director for numerous artists and television specials, including the Soul Train Music Awards and NBC’s Sun-day Night Show. n

Striking, bold, organic, and beautiful. Those words describe Maya Azucena’s voice, her music, and her message. On CRY LOVE her impressive talent unfolds over eleven tracks. An anthem for justice, the title track constitutes the album’s core concept. Her desire to in-spire and empower listeners saturates the edgy groove of “Warriors” and the sanguine sway of “Near”. “The Half” is a harrowing take propelled by rock icon Vernon Reid. She invited reggae leg-end and Billboard #1 artist iNi Kamoze aboard on “My Back’s Not Up Against The Wall” while the glistening, acoustic qualities of “Belong To The Sun” furnish another standout cut. The songs are all unified by a remarkable depth and stunning musicality.

Larry Coryell is one of the world’s ac-knowledged guitar masters. He has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and ‘featured accompanist’. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of “the guitar gods” in the late 1970s and as a “truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing,” he has also been christened as “a true pio-neer of rock-jazz fusion” by the New York Times, and dubbed “the God-father of Fusion” by Dan Ouellette of DownBeat Magazine. The late ‘60s through early ‘70s saw Larry as one of the most in-demand guitarists in rock, jazz and all musi-cal genres. Through the albums pro-duced during this period, Larry Co-ryell emerged as a profound music prophet who merged rock, jazz, east-ern modes and scales with free-form improvisation and flashing classical riffs. In 1974 Larry formed The 11th House, the most popular and successful fu-sion band of its time, which included his friend and colleague Randy Breck-er. After The 11th House disbanded, Larry was signed by Clive Davis for

Arista Records, where he made a se-ries of solo albums.

Kyle Eastwood began playing electric bass in high school, learning R&B, Motown, and reggae tunes by ear. After studying with French bassist Bunny Brunel, he engrossed himself in the New York and Los Angeles area jazz scene, and signed with Sony in 1998 where he released his debut recording From Here to There. Paris Blue (2004 Candid), climbed to No. 1 on the French Jazz Charts. His third recording Now (Candid) was released in 2006 and features songs written by Ben Cullum as well as a who’s who of musicians from the Lon-don jazz scene. His live performances have been met with sold out venues and critical acclaim across Europe, Asia, and North America. Kyle has composed or arranged sev-en of Clint Eastwood’s latest films including Mystic River. Million Dollar Baby, Flags Of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Gran Torino, and Invictus. n

A native New Yorker and a real ‘down to earth’ person, Charmaine’s voice will float through the air like a sweet sound, which inspires the soul. If you enjoy a powerhouse vocalist with a melodic flow, then you’ve found the right girl. Her CD titled, ‘Dimensions of Love’ has a distinctive vibe, that’s not easy to cate-gorize. Charmaine describes it as, “Soul, marinated in Rock.” The CD croons many tales and delivers the essence of love, plus the growing pains that tag along with it. “There is a song for every rise and fall in the name of passion. The theme is penned to describe the many dimensions that love has.” she states. n

KENNY WERNERWiTH THE BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA iNSTiTUTE OF HiGHER LEARNiNG

Long regarded as one of Europe’s premier big bands - a group that “manifests love,” ac-cording to Grammy-winning arranger Maria Schneider - The Brussels Jazz Orchestra has joined hands with Kenny Werner to create a winning tableau vivant of spirited writing and performance. The Institute of Higher Learn-ing features a sumptuous 3-part suite, “Can-tabile,” that reinforces in a singular way Wer-ner’s place among forward-thinking jazzmen. Textural, rhythmic, evincing cascading swirls of color, it was inspired by and dedicated to Bob Brookmeyer. Led by reedman and group founder Frank Vaganee, the BJO offers a per-fect canvas for Werner’s painterly approach to composition and arranging.
